Canterbury Vet Thanksgiving Pet Safety Thanksgiving is a special holiday that brings together family and friends. It also can carry hazards for pets. Follow these tips to keep your pets healthy and safe during the holiday. Keep the feast on the table—not under it. Eating turkey or turkey skin, or other fatty foods, even a small amount, can cause a life-threatening condition in pets known as pancreatitis. Fatty foods are hard for animals to digest, Many foods that are healthy for people are poisonous to pets – including onions, raisins and grapes. If you want to share a Thanksgiving treat with your pet, make or buy a treat that is made just for pets. No pie or other desserts for your pooch. Chocolate can be harmful for pets. The artificial sweetener xylitol, commonly used in gum and sugar-free baked goods, also can be deadly if consumed by dogs. Yeast dough can cause problems for pets, including ethanol toxicity, painful gas and potentially fatal bloating. Put the trash away where your pets can’t find it. A turkey carcass sitting out on the carving table or left in a trash container that is open or easily opened, could be deadly to your family pet. Dispose of turkey carcasses and bones and anything used to wrap or tie the meat, such as strings, bags and packaging, in a covered, tightly secured trash bag. Garbage should be placed in a closed trash container outdoors or behind a closed, locked door. Be careful with decorative plants. Don’t forget that some flowers and festive plants can be toxic to pets. These include amaryllis, Baby’s Breath, Sweet William, some ferns, hydrangeas and more. Keep your pets away from all plants and table decorations. Watch your pets around festive decorations. Holiday displays or candles are attractive to pets as well as people. Never leave a pet alone in an area with a lit candle; it could result in a fire. Pine cones, needles and other decorations can cause intestinal blockages or even perforate an animal’s intestine if eaten. If you’re hosting a party or having overnight visitors, plan ahead to keep your pets safe and make the experience less stressful for everyone. Visitors can upset your pets. Some pets are shy or excitable around new people or in crowds, and Thanksgiving often means many visitors at once and higher-thanusual noise and activity levels. If you know your dog or cat is nervous when people visit your home, put

her in another room or in a crate with a favorite toy. This will reduce the emotional stress on your pet and protect your guests from possible injury. If your pet is particularly upset by houseguests, talk to your veterinarian about possible solutions to this common problem. Even if your pets are comfortable around guests, make sure you watch them closely, especially when people are entering or leaving your home. While you’re welcoming guests and collecting coats, a four-legged family member may make a break for it out the door and become lost. Make sure your pet has proper identification with your current contact information; ideally a microchip with up-to-date, registered information. If a pet does sneak out, they’re more likely to be returned to you. If your pet isn’t already microchipped, talk to your veterinarian about the benefits of this simple procedure. FINANCIAL FOCU$ Put Thanksgiving Lessons to Work in Your Financial Plans Thanksgiving is almost here. Over the years, this holiday has taken on a variety of meanings, most of them centered on family, caring and sharing. You can carry these same values past Thanksgiving into your daily life – and you can certainly incorporate them into your financial strategies for taking care of your loved ones. So, here are a few suggestions: Protect your family. If something were to happen to you, could your family pay the mortgage? Could your children still afford to go to college someday? To protect your family’s current lifestyle and long-term goals, you may well need to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. Your employer may offer these types of protection as employee benefits, but the coverage might be insufficient for your needs. Consequently, you might need to supplement your employer-paid insurance with additional policies. Invest in your children. If you have young children, and you’d like to see them go to college someday, you may want to start putting money away toward that goal. You can save and invest for college in a variety of ways, but one popular method is through a 529 plan, which offers high contribution limits and potential tax advantages. Plus, a 529 plan gives you significant control and flexibility: – if you establish a plan for one child, but he or she decides not to go to college, you can name another child as the recipient.

with Jerry Pittz

IRA, but you can write checks to your children for that purpose – though, of course, they are then free to do whatever they want with the money. It’s not always easy for a young person to “max out” on an IRA, which has an annual contribution limit of $5,500 for workers under 50, so any help you can give your children in this area should be greatly appreciated. Safeguard your own financial independence. Almost certainly, one of the most undesirable outcomes you can imagine is to become financially dependent on your grown children. Even if you save and invest diligently throughout your working years, you could still be vulnerable to financial dependency if you need an extensive period of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay. These costs can be enormous, and Medicare typically pays only a small percentage, and usually for just a limited time. To protect your financial freedom, you should explore ways of addressing long-term care costs. A financial professional can explain those alternatives that may be appropriate for your situation.

D D

w

Communicate your wishes to your family. At some point in your life, you will need to draw up your estate plans, which could include a will, a living trust, a durable power of attorney, a health care directive and other documents. To be fair to your children and other family members, and to avoid hurt feelings, you should clearly communicate your plans and your wishes while you are still around. Thanksgiving means more than turkey and football. And if you can successfully apply the lessons of this holiday to your financial plans, both you and your family will have reason to be thankful.. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Be generous. You don’t have to be a millionaire to make meaningful financial gifts to your family. For example, if you have grown children, consider helping them fund their IRAs. You can’t contribute directly to a child’s

Firework Pet Safety

Fireworks are part of many celebrations, and are tons of fun for humans… but not so much for our furry family! Fireworks may elevate your pets’ fight-or-flight drive. This can cause them to panic, wet the floor, try to escape, or exhibit other distressed behavior. Be aware! There’s lots you can do to help your dogs and cats stay safe. Here’s how: 1. Keep your pets inside during fireworks times. Even normally calm pets can be startled enough by fireworks to bolt over or through a fence they previously respected. 2. Keep windows AND doors closed & locked to prevent pets from bolting and slipping past you as you exit or enter. Pets can stay stressed for hours after the fireworks stop. 3. Pet ID: Check that your pets’ collars are secure, with up-to-date and readable pet ID tags. Call your microchip company to verify that their microchips have your current contact information. 4. Turn on the TV or music. Put the volume as loud enough to muffle any fireworks noises, but it doesn’t have to be blasting!

• You do not need to reside in Bethlehem to be a member of this ski club.

How to enroll: Download form at

www.bethlehemskiclub.com Questions; contact Marlene at 475-1750 or email BethlehemSkiClub1@gmail.com

5. Don’t coddle pets if they are scared. That rewards and encourages scared behavior. Talk in a normal voice, act indifferent to the sounds. If you are calm and relaxed, this will encourage them to follow your lead. 6. Distract with a toy or chew. Give your pet a special foodstuffed toy or long-lasting chew treat, to encourage their mind focus on that, not the noises outside. 7. Daily exercise. Give your dogs and cats their normal “big” exercise session every day leading up to, on, and after the holiday. Exercise helps relieve stress. 8. If you know your pet gets dangerously distressed during fireworks, talk to your vet about possible short-term medication. 9.Thundershirt. This reportedly helps with fireworks too! Order online at thundershirt.com. 10.Stay home with your pets. If possible, do not leave your pets alone, (and never outside), during fireworks.

There will be Fireworks at the Bethlehem Middle School on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7 PM

Delmar Post Office and Selkirk Post Office By Susan E. Leath

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.* While neither the Delmar or Selkirk post office has these words inscribed above their doorway, they certainly embody the spirit of our local service. Both Delmar and Selkirk have a long postal history, although not as long as the U.S. Postal Service in general. For example, Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General in 1775, the first postage stamp was published in 1847, and free city delivery was started in 1863. Nathaniel Adams established the Delmar, then Adamsville, post office in 1840. He worked out of his hotel, the Adams House, which still stands at the corner of Adams Street and Delaware Avenue. In those early days, folks visited the office to pick up their mail. Rural Free Delivery was established in Delmar on March 1, 1902. City Delivery Service got its start in the 1930s. In 1931, the Civic Betterment Committee of the Delmar Progress Club began lobbying for home delivery. In order to accomplish this, Delmar and Elsmere’s streets needed to be named and houses numbered. Which sounds simple, but at the time, some streets had four different names for their various sections. We still struggle today with Adams Street and Adams Place, which were kept because they commemorated two different Adams families. Also, according to a note in Bethlehem Revisited, “Miss Wands, who lived on Adams Place and sold rock garden plants, opposed the issue [a name change]. She had new stationary with the address of Adams Place.” Postmaster Arthur I. Ryan issued five requirements for the new delivery service. They included items we take for granted today. For example, “Mail of every description should be addressed to street and number” and “Every family must provide suitable receptacles at the front door.” (Altamont Enterprise, February 30, 1938.) Ryan was Delmar’s postmaster from 1934 to 1959. He oversaw the office’s move to the current Delaware Avenue location. Ryan said, “In face of the rapid building and an influx of new families to Delmar, government sanction of the new post office could not be more timely.” (Altamont Enterprise, September 24, 1937.) The Colonial Revival style building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of

its architectural significance. It was built in 1939-40, one of many public works projects undertaken during the Great Depression. It is one of 13 virtually identical New York State post offices designed by Supervising Architect of the Treasury Louis A. Simon. Delmar is different from the 13 in that it does not have a cupula gracing its roofline. Featured in the lobby of the building is the mural “The Indian Ladder” created by Sol Wilson. Wilson was known as an expressive realist painter and created at least one other post office mural.

The outside of the Delmar Post Office has changed little since this circa 1960 snapshot.

The Selkirk Post Office was established by Jacob Soop in 1883. Nearby were two others: Cedar Hill established in 1833 and folded into Selkirk in 1901 and Beckers Corners established in 1873 which merged into Selkirk in 1899. The post office building had many locations in the hamlet, beginning with the old railroad station in 1883, then Vrooman’s general store, then in a building next to Lehmann’s garage that eventually was picked up and moved across Maple Avenue. The office was located in the home of William Winne when a new post office was approved 1962. The new building would be constructed on Maple Avenue by Joseph Neri of Selkirk and then leased to the U.S. Post Office. A Postal Department spokesman noted at the time that “the department’s capital investment is limited substantially

Maus Lamoreax was appointed to Selkirk Route No. 2 January 1, 1917 and served until July 10, 1932. The Delmar Post office has had several locations, including this familiar Four Corners building, before settling into its current spot on Delaware Avenue in 1940.

to postal equipment, while the building remains under private ownership, with the owner paying local real estate taxes.” (The Knickerbocker News, Oct 12, 1962). Rural Free Delivery began on April 2, 1900. Edward K. Selkirk was appointed the first carrier at a salary of $400 per year which included the hiring of a horse. The route covered 20 square miles and served 925 families. Truly a rural area. Residents were required to have a proper mail box secure from the elements and

mischief makers. The U.S. Postal Service formalized and standardized the mailboxes for rural customers in 1902. Before then, “everything from lard pails and syrup cans to old apple, soap, and cigar boxes served as mailboxes.” (https://about.usps.com) Selkirk traveled this route for 30 years before retiring June 2, 1930. The Selkirk Post Office moved to Route 9W in October 2000 where it remains today. *According to the US Postal Service website, the service has no official motto. These words, from the Persian Wars by Herodotus, were inscribed over a New York City Post Office in 1914.

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York. The book is

available for sale at the Town Clerk’s office at Town Hall, I Love Books in Delmar, Tattered Pages in Glenmont, and many other retailers including online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com.

Michael Mangini and William Winne stand in front of the Selkirk Post Office. (Unfortunately, we don’t know who is who.) Mangini served as postmaster from 1924 to 30. Winne from 1934 to 1960.

Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org

Dear Neighbor, In 1942, the Bethlehem Community White Christmas Festival began as several Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund

Bethlehem

has been to provide financial assistance for emergency needs of residents of the Town of Bethlehem and students of Bethlehem Central School District, when such needs are not covered by other agencies or sources. These matters are treated with confidentiality. School personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services & other providers make most of the requests for assistance.

Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942

Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a long-standing tradition of the Bethlehem Community Fund.

Funds are used for short-term emergency needs like medical expenses, utility or insurance bill assistance, auto/ home repair bills, educational supplies and unreimbursable school related expenses or personal emergencies except in extenuating circumstances which will require additional details and justification.

• Each December over 100 Bethlehem families in need receive Holiday Food Baskets. With the Holiday Season fast approaching, the Bethlehem Community Fund is looking at a record number of families needing assistance. Financial responsibilities and human service needs in our schools and community increase during this time of year. Our goal of $30,000 will enable us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors this winter and throughout the year.

Your gift will touch the lives of our less fortunate neighbor in the Bethlehem community. Thank you for your support of this valuable community effort. Warmest regards,

YMCA CircleHelping of Champs Program: Families Face Health Challenges The Bethlehem YMCA does so much to touch so many lives in different ways. I know, that sounds like the message from It’s A Wonderful Life. I’m not just talking about helping someone get in shape or lose weight, although that does improve your quality of life. I’m talking about children and families that are facing the most serious, life-threatening, health care challenges…… and the volunteers who help bring a little wonderful into their lives.

blurbs sum up Circle of Champs, but they are also only the tip of the iceberg. The YMCA wants to expand the program and encourages people that have not previously been aware of it to check it out. If you or someone you know has a child with a life threatening illness, please reach out to Circle of Champs coordinator Jenna Gruber at 456-3634 for more information on this wonderful program. It can truly be a life changer and a life saver.

Mark Hansen

Member, Bethlehem YMCA Board of Advisors

The YMCA’s Circle of Champs program is dedicated to providing times of fun, respite and support for children who’ve been touched by a life-threatening illness, as well as their siblings. What makes Circle of Champs special is its focus on the needs of each child and that child’s family. We understand that a child’s illness affects the entire family. This approach gives children and those in their lives the chance to spend fun time together when they need that the most. The list of some of the many fun events and activities Circle of Champs kids enjoys includes: a free week at YMCA summer camp; events at the Times Union Center; dinner and a movie; a Christmas party; bowling; Albany Devils hockey games; Siena basketball games; laser tag; apple picking; family picnics; and so much more. All program activities are free for families because the YMCA appreciates that treating an illness can cause financial challenges for families. We also offer discounted YMCA memberships. Fun trips and events are great, but to these kids and families, they mean even more. Because it’s an opportunity to get together with others that understand the pressures and concerns of facing serious illnesses. The events provide a vital respite from visits to doctors and hospitals, and that applies to the Champs kids and their brothers and sisters. For an afternoon or evening they can just be kids having fun. The bond that develops between the kids and the Camps families is incredible. The Circle of Champs program is only possible through the generous Annual Campaign contributions of Y members and supporters in the community. The program was one of the primary beneficiaries of a recent fund raised, called “The Event,” at Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady. Supporters came from across the Capital District to enjoy an evening out, while raising important funds to support Champs and other worthy, local, health care programs for kids. Healing family fun time. A support system. A unique approach. Kids get to be kids. Fun for all. These

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Readers, November is a month of remembrance…a time of reflection as the Holidays and winter rapidly approaches. Veteran’s Day for many has become a day of retail sales with some people starting their Holiday shopping on that day. Are only those of us who have had military family members the ones who reflect upon Veteran’s Day? On the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice (agreement to stop warring) was reached with Germany bringing the War to end all Wars, to an end. Originally called Armistice Day, the day’s name changed to Veteran’s Day in 1954, when President (General) Dwight Eisenhower signed the bill to set aside a day to acknowledge all who have given service in armed forces to our country. (Memorial Day recalls those who gave their lives in the service of the country.) The poppy, a flower of remembrance for fallen soldiers since the time of the Napoleonic war, grows in the French cemetery. I memorized this poem in grade school…did you? “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row, that mark our place; and in the sky the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard amid the guns below…” I still find the photos from this cemetery moving. I always connected Veterans with older soldiers, those from the American Legion Post who marched in parades waving flags wearing their envelope hats! It was during the Vietnam War that these brave soldiers became boys from my neighborhood, cousins and friends. Many of you know that I am a proud military Army Mo. My first born, SFC Matthew Eldridge has been a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne for over 18 years. He has had tours of duty in Kosovo, Haiti (twice), Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq (4times), Afghanistan (twice), he has worked for 1 ½ years with the Wounded Warriors program, written an SOP on Desert Warfare, recently trained in Africa in Jungle Warfare, is a Jumpmaster (over 100 jumps) and now a trainer in many fields. As I write this he is currently training NATO troops and reserves in jungle tactics. He told me that he has been spending nights reading, often for work, but also some sci-fi to relax. This gentle giant of mine, nicknamed Moose, still states that his favorite book is “To Kill a Mockingbird” and one of his favorite past times is reading to his children. (Though he cringes a bit at reading the choices of his daughter filled with princesses, talking cats and dogs!) I love envisioning my son, still in his camo in his humungous recliner with a lap full of children reading to them. Just a reminder: Tattered Pages has a varied selection of military based novels, memoirs and current event books, if you should wish to read in that genre. As you start your Holiday shopping, don’t forget that Tattered Pages offers gift certificates as well as hundreds of books in gift giving quality that would add to any gift basket, bag or set. There is also a nice selection of DVDs, many of television series such as Criminal Minds, Lost, Sopranos among others. When compiling your gift list… don’t forget that a cookbook with utensils, potholders, bottle of wine, candle would make a very thoughtful gift. For the golfer in your life a great memoir or self-help golf book with hand towel, golf tees etc. How about a few romances, a mug, teabags & a candle? We have a great

selection of Art & Craft books that would make a great foundation to a specialized gift! Tattered Pages has been a part of the Glenmont community for over 10 years now! When someone comes in and says I used to go to you when you were in the Pricechopper Plaza… “Wow…that was 10 years ago!” or if they say, “I remember when you had cats living in the shop for adoption!”, that was over 6 years ago. The shop has been in the Glenmont Center Square for over 9 years now…and I have enjoyed watching the families over this time together! I had a young girl come in to buy books who said that she had been living out of the area for the past 3 years. “Bella”, I inquired? Yes, this little girl, who was now a tween had been in my Saturday morning story hours back in 2008! I love it when “Kat” comes in to catch up. We used to chat about mystery novelists, especially Tess Gerritsen, over the years starting when she was in middle school. She is now in her third year in college! Just recently one of my regulars, Brenda, brought in her twins who will be 4 soon. She was an avid customer up until the delivery of the twins…a change in job location and a change in reading material from romance to kid’s books! She now brought them in to meet me and start their own “trade credit” account. Small businesses are more than retail locations. Customers become friends. We exchange pet photos, grandchildren stories, catch up on kids, jobs and latest travels! People often wander in and “sit a spell” chatting and previewing books. A small business, such as Tattered Pages, was started before the invention of the electronic reader. People often ask how I stay in business selling “previously owned books?” It is thru the loyalty of the customer and thru those who still prefer to have a “paper printed” book in their hands. It is challenging to be successful selling items that start at $1 (prices are reduced 20-60% off original prices) with the majority of the books averaging under $8. But, I believe that readers appreciate an opportunity to “recycle” their books for credits and apply those credits for buying new purchases. Most books are in gift giving quality, so I would appreciate your consideration during Holiday Shopping season. On Small Business Saturday, November 26th the shop will be open 10-3 with many specials throughout the shop! Currently in the shop I have a few baskets of paperback classic literature books for $1. I have just stocked hundreds of children’s chapter books including Dork Diaries, Goosebumps and emergent reader chapter books in both soft and hardcover! If any of my “trade credit” families are cleaning out great children’s books, I will extend you extra credit for clean, next-to-new contemporary children’s books…in need of board books to chapter books, during the month of November! In conclusion…spreading the word about Tattered Pages will be the best advertisement possible for the shop. Hoping to see you soon…helping to keep Americans wellread and on budget! Until next month…happy reading!
