Canterbury Vet Pet Fire Safety An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires. Nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners’ pets, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) and ADT Security Services have united for the annual National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15 to spread awareness about how pets can start home fires and more importantly how to prevent them. The following tips can help your pet from starting a fire, as well as how to keep your pets safe. Prevent your pet from starting fires Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home. Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in pets starting a fire. Flameless candles – These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles. Beware of glass water bowls on wooden decks (glass bowls are dangerous for pets anyhow due to breakage) – Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun’s rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
Keep your pets safe Keep Pets Near Entrances When Away From Home – Keep collars on pets and leashes at the ready in case firefighters need to rescue your pet. When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them. Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home. Keep them safe in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas. Since Pets Left Alone Can’t Escape a Burning Home – Consider using monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center so emergency responders can be contacted when you’re not home. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms. Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling – Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed. Microchip your pets If pets run outside and become lost during a house fire, a microchip may be the only way they could be reunited with you.

The Pierce Family Farm and Summer House By Susan E. Leath
Often when considering old houses, these then and now articles focus on the fancy ones, the Victorian ones, the high style mansions. This month we’re going to consider a small, ordinary farm house located on Old Quarry Road on the out skirts of the town of Bethlehem. Over the years, the property has been referred to as being in South Bethlehem, Feura Bush and even Jericho. The home of basic wood frame construction dates to about 1859. In 1869, the five-acre property, including the house, was sold by Minard and Hannah Oathout to Thomas Pierce. The deed notes that the property was bounded to the north by lands of Andrew Terrell, east by lands of Ambrose Wiltsie (deceased), south by lands of John Wiltsie and west by the public highway. The 1870 U.S. Census bears this out showing Thomas Pierce’s neighbors Andrew and Emmaline Terrel, John and Sarah Oathout and John and Jane Wiltsie. Minard and Hannah Oathout are listed in both the 1860 and 1870 census as living in Westerlo where Minard is a butcher. The 1870 census gives a glimpse into the life of Thomas Pierce and his wife Eliza. Both were born in Ireland and neither can read or write. Under the Constitutional Relations column, John is not checked off as a citizen. A later census (1900) indicates that he came to America in 1840 and that he had become a naturalized citizen. That year, 1870, Thomas worked on the railroad and Eliza kept house. They have four children: Mary A., Sarah E., Ellen J., and Thomas. The interesting, and frustrating, part comes with the question of how old are Thomas and Eliza. A simple question that gets answered differently in every census report found about the couple. Calculated birth years for Thomas range from 1815 to 1830 and for Eliza from 1820 to 1830. The exact date likely falls in the middle and is a reminder to not simply take census reports at face value. In contrast, the ages of their children, all of whom were born in the U.S., remain consistent throughout census reports. The 1880 U.S. census highlights that this was not a well-to-do family. Thomas is now a farm laborer as is his 15-year-old son Thomas. Daughters

Mary Ann (21), Sarah (19) and Ellen (17) are all listed as domestic servants. Vital records indicate that Thomas Pierce died in 1904. His occupation was laborer. The attending doctor was J. R. Davidson of South Bethlehem. It appears that Eliza died in 1907 and that both are buried in St. Agnes Cemetery in Albany. The farmhouse then came into the hands of Thomas Pierce, Jr. It looks as if he did not live in the house on Old Quarry Road but lived in Albany, for a time with his sister. Henry Wilkins

ran a boarding house on Park Street in Albany where his brother-in-law Thomas Pierce is listed as living. Wilkens’ wife is named as Elizabeth. Indications are that this is Sarah E., Thomas Pierce’s sister. Henry and Elizabeth’s children 23

are May, Bessie, Harriet and Walter. Thomas Pierce, Jr. did visit the house regularly, and he died there in January 1934. A notice in the Albany County Post stated he was survived only by his sister Mrs. Sarah Wilkins of Albany. After his death, the property came to his sister, his nieces and nephew all of whom are from Albany. The old farmhouse began a transformation into a summer time property shared by the Wilkins family. They called it simply the Farm. In the summer of 1940, the family dismantled and moved a camp cottage from Nassau Lake to the property. Called Camp Linger Longer, its new location took advantage of the sweeping views toward Albany. The property remained in the Pierce-Wilkins family from 1869 until at least the 1950s Today, the Kozlowski family enjoy the country setting and expansive views that kept the Wilkens family coming back to visit. They have updated the plain and simple farmhouse into a warm and inviting home. The cottage serves as a guest house and the original outhouse and shed remain as well. Susan E. YMCA VETERANS MARK PATRIOTIC HOLIDAYS Summer is a particularly patriotic time of year in the USA. From Memorial Day to the Fourth of July we celebrate our freedom and honor the the brave men and women who fought to preserve it, and remember those who gave their lives for our country. The Bethlehem YMCA is takes great pride in the number of military veterans who are Y members. I spoke with some of them in late May about their experiences in the military, what the YMCA means to them, and about their thoughts on our patriotic holidays.
Chris Orth of Glenmont was in the Marines from 1997 to 2009 and served all over the world, including Iraq, and Africa, as well as serving as an embassy guard in Rome and Shanghai. Since 2006, he has been a member of the Air National Guard at Stratton Air Force Base. Chris loves how “family oriented” the Y is. His two sons go to pre-school at the Bethlehem Y and he enjoys working out there. Chris says this is “a time to remember guys who never made it home. I think sometimes holidays get commercialized but it’s about the families who lost their loved ones and friends who made that ultimate sacrifice. We’ve been at war a long time now but sometimes that message gets lost.” Bob Ledenham of Slingerlands is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970. He likes the variety of the workout machines at the Y but says it’s tough to compare his workout today with the intensity of Marine boot camp. ”It’s a somber day. I saw friends die right in front of me,” Bob said. “The holiday is not a celebratory thing; it’s about remembering those who gave their lives for who we are today.” Kevin Crotty of Albany has been a Bethlehem Y member for six years, and he served in the Marine Corps from 1972 to 1976. Kevin’s concerns are for the men and women coming home from combat with serious injuries and he wishes the military would do more to protect them. YMCA member George Decker is Navy through and through, serving on active duty in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970, and 30 years in the reserves. “I remember a lot of old sailors that I knew. I reminisce the good times that I had in the Navy.” George is active in the American Legion and has been a regular marcher in the Bethlehem Memorial Day parade for decades. John Martin of Delmar also served in Vietnam in the Army from 1967 to 1969. I think all our members can relate when he says that to him, the Bethlehem Y is “a very comfortable place, even if you don’t know someone, you know them.”
John said that Memorial Day is a reminder that “freedom isn’t free. I think of people who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country and beliefs.” Sharon has been a YMCA member since last year. She served in the Air Force from 1991-1998. While serving at a base in Oklahoma in 1995, she was a first responder when a bomb went off at the nearby Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injuring 680 others. “There was so much chaos, it was just awful.” Sharon has a personal trainer at the Bethlehem Y and loves “how everyone accepts everyone; there is such a great community feel like there was in the military.” The YMCA offers military veterans a fifty percent discount and no joiner fee to become a member. It’s a small way to show our appreciation for their service in defending our country and fighting for freedom around the world. Many Bethlehem residents have answered the call to duty and many have not come home. As we mark the Fourth of July with picnics, parties and fireworks, let’s keep those brave men and women, and their families, in our thoughts and prayers.
YMCA 2016 TOGETHERHOOD PROGRAM Togetherhood is a YMCA volunteer community service program where we identify a specific need, and our members work with others in the community to help address that need. It is a simple, fun and rewarding way for members to identify ways they can give back and support their neighbors through their own skills and energy. The Bethlehem Y’s Togetherhood program has quickly become a nationally-recognized mission model. This year’s Togetherhood program is just coming together…no pun intended. Togetherhood committee members are planning some fun, exciting, and rewarding projects for the coming year and are looking for people to join them for Christmas in July; building a community garden; a soccer program for refugees; and a mission targeting youth education and development. Togetherhood service projects are designed to make a meaningful impact in our community while also being convenient and fun. Togetherhood is not just for YMCA members, it’s for anyone in the community that would like to help out. Please join us. Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Dear Constant Readers… Tattered Pages has celebrated its 9th year in the Glenmont Center Square & I have to ask, where has the time gone? In those 9 years I have fostered & found homes for 17 cats! I have had two beloved greeter dogs Riley (2009-2011) and my adorable 12yr old Seamus (2011-present). The shop has had close to 34,000 sales in that time and hundreds of thousands of books have come in & out of the shop! I have made life-long friends, and sadly, have had to say good-bye to some permanently. I have always said that my days here are not “retail sales” but an extension of family like experiences. We share our love of books, stories, jokes, and family. I have watched children go from middle school to college, oh the stories we have shared! I recently had a conversation with a young woman who first started coming in 5th grade. She brought in many of her young adult fantasy books such as Erin Hunter’s “Warriors series” (cats are the main characters), her Kate DiCamillo books, Animal Ark books and several Avi books. We discussed our frustration with author George R.R. Martin’s delay in his 6th book in the “Song of Fire and Ice” series (which is HBO’s Game of Thrones series) which then led to discussing Ransom Riggs “Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children” series and how impatient we become waiting for the next novel in the series! (This is coming to the big screen soon. I have seen trailers and it does look promising to staying true to the book). In those 9 years I have tried to stay true to my mottoes, “Keeping America Green & Well Read”, “Reading is a family value & tradition” “Selection, Service, Value”. I was thrilled to receive honorable mention in the Best of the Capital Region 2016 Times Union Poll in the category of best used bookstore in the Capital District! Yes, Seamus & I danced around the aisles singing “We’re Number 4” and we believe that our customers are Number 1! Keeping a small business flourishing is not easy in this economy, and for a used bookstore our biggest competition is Amazon & e-readers. Since our books are all reduced in price, perception may be that the shop isn’t organized or that the inventory is all “tattered”. Truth is, the books are in alphabetical order, by author, in the fiction areas, in my computer database; most books are in next to new condition. They are not garage sale priced, but are reduced 25-60% off original prices with some books starting at $1! I have thousands of books in my children’s section from board book to young adult! We offer a unique program unlike any other in the area. To be a part of the “trade credit” program, you bring in no more than 6 clean books that are odor free, clean of dirt/grime and we can work to earn you credits. Then, when buying books, the credits take off an additional 20% off the lowest asking price. This is not your place to “unload books” or drop what didn’t sell in your garage sale! The gaining of the books is important, however, it is the purchasing of the books that 34
keeps me in business. I love seeing what people are reading at the Bethlehem Town Pool during the summer. I saw one lifeguard reading “Treasure Island”, I saw one young adult reading “Allegiant” by Veronica Roth, one adult reading “Summerland” by Elin Hilderbrand, another reading “Here Be Dragons” by Sharon Kay Penman (historical fiction). I just finished Lisa Scottoline’s “Look Again” (mystery) at the pool. I am currently reading “Requiem” the 3rd in a YA dystopian trilogy by Lauren Oliver. Before that I read George R.R. Martin’s early Sci-Fi adventure, “Dying in the Light” which I enjoyed very much. Written before his famous series, you can see glimmers of that world in this novel of life in a faraway solar system where the wheel of seven suns are dying and the effect on society, culture and the eco-system. My next book that I will be reading is “A Man Called Ove” by Frederik Backman. My copy will be available for sale as soon as I am done reading it! Remember, that my background is as an educator, and I would love to help you with your child’s summer reading. If I don’t have a required book, I will do my best to get it for you at the best price possible & as quickly as possible. Also, some advice to help your child keep their school skills sharpened, have your child keep a journal while reading. Have each page contain Title, Author, #pages, setting, character names, main plot or problem, how it was resolved, would they recommend to others/ why and illustrate if they wish. This ELA connection will help keep them fresh for any future assignments. It also helps to share the journal & aids in book discussion. If your child is a struggling reader, try reading a page, they read a paragraph etc. If you show your child that you value reading…they may emulate it!
