Ask the

Canterbury Vet Cabin Fever During the cold winter months, people often develop the winter blues due to cabin fever. Pets can also get cabin fever; many develop behavior problems as a result of boredom or frustration. Bored dogs with energy to burn bark more, chew more, and are more destructive. These undesired behaviors can become permanent habits if they are not deterred. If your pet develops an undesirable behavior such as house soiling, destructive chewing, or restlessness, it is important to visit your veterinarian to rule out any medical issues. Once any potential health issues are ruled out or treated, there are some simple things you can do to provide mental stimulation and indoor activities to help prevent cabin fever. First, understand why cabin fever can cause your pets to behave badly. The house is not nearly as fun as the great outdoors. There are not as many places to sniff out or climb on top of. Therefore, to help cure cabin fever, make the indoors more interesting. First be sure to keep the routines regular such as feeding and going outside. Make feeding time more interesting by using food puzzles/toys rather than just feeding out of a bowl. Both dogs and cats get a lot of mental stimulation figuring out how to get the food out of the toy. It’s important to provide mental stimulation as an alternative to physical exercise on lazy or cold days so that your pet does not become anxious, frustrated, or bored. Indoor training sessions will work to prevent boredom and help form good bonds between family members and your pet. Alternate play toys and differ the activity weekly. Improve or add to old tricks or teach new tricks. For example, teaching your dog or cat to differentiate between left and right paw shakes, ‘high fives’ versus shakes, etc. You are only limited by your imagination. Having fun is the key. Contrary to popular belief, most cats can also be trained to do simple tricks such as sit, roll over, give a paw, etc. While you can work on training at home with your pet, for best results, professional group training courses provide additional stimulation and allow your pet to socialize with other dogs. Getting out into different environments and interacting with other dogs is a great help for the winter blues. Some training facilities also have larger indoor arenas where dogs can frolic and expend pent up energy. Increasing exercise cuts down on boredom. Walking, even limited, is still good in the cold. Booties and coats help make winter more tolerable and safer for dogs

with shorter coats. More frequent short walks going in different areas provide variety and some outside time. Head halters and front attaching harnesses can make walking easier and safer for the humans as well. For cats use laser pointers they can chase, stuffed toys they can pounce on or boxes they can investigate. Cats need to have their toys rotated regularly to prevent boredom. Make sure there are enough places for the cats to hide and perch. Perching beds near a window can relieve boredom – cats love being up in high places and overlooking outdoor activity. In winter, it takes a little extra effort to engage in exciting activities with our dogs. However, there are few things better for our relationship with our pets than sharing experiences. It makes our pets happier and easier to live with, and is a great gift we can give to them and to ourselves. FINANCIAL FOCU$ Everyone Benefits When You Make

Charitable Gifts

Thanksgiving is almost here. Over the years, this holiday

Now that we are in the heart of the holiday season, you may be thinking about ways you can put your money where your heart is. Specifically, you might be pondering which groups you should support with charitable gifts. And as long as you choose groups that meet the right criteria, your generosity can also be rewarding to you, in the form of tax benefits. To begin with, you’ll want to make sure you are giving to a reputable charity. That means you’ll need to ask some questions. How does a group measure its effectiveness? Is it devoting as much of its contributions as possible to the actual work of the organization, or is it spending too much money on administrative costs? Generally, a worthwhile charity should spend at least 75% of its income on programs. You may be able to find this type of information on a charitable group’s annual report and its website. You can also go to the website of one of the agencies that evaluates charitable groups. On these sites, you can get a lot of information dealing with a charity’s effectiveness, income, spending and other topics. After you’ve identified a charity, or charities, you can decide how much you want to give and how you want to give it. If the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such groups), your gift can offer you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25% tax bracket, and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity,

with Jerry Pittz

you can subtract the $1,000 from your adjusted gross income, which will result in tax savings of $250. Upon making your gift, make sure you get a receipt that lists the name of the organization and the date and amount of your contribution. (Your maximum deduction will be limited to a percentage of your adjusted gross income.) You can do more than simply write a check, however. If you have stocks that have grown significantly in value, you may want to donate them to a charitable group. You will be allowed a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift on the date of the transfer, even if your original cost was only a fraction of today’s value. Furthermore, you will avoid the capital gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stock, provided you’ve held the stock for at least a year. If you do contribute appreciated stocks, you will want to be cognizant of the effect of your donation on your portfolio. If you were to give a sizable amount of growth-oriented stocks, would it affect your overall growth potential? Conversely, if you are primarily giving away relatively conservative, income-producing stocks, would it end up moving your portfolio in a riskier direction? When donating stocks, if at all possible try to do so in a way that does not harm your portfolio’s balance. In any case, whether you give cash or appreciated assets, you’ll need to make your gift by Dec. 31 if you’re going to deduct it on your 2016 taxes. So be as generous as you can afford, think about the effect of your gift on your own financial situation – and be prepared to act soon. Delmar Post Office and Selkirk Post Office By Susan E. Leath

As so often happens with these articles for Our Towne Bethlehem, this one begins with a photograph. Taken about 1926, twins Edith and Anne Tolman pose in their skies and bloomers, their wooly hats and mittens. In the background is the family’s shingled house and farther back is a barn. The photo came to my attention through Jane Tolman who also shared photos of her lovely Victorian style home which is at the end of Mullens Road in Slingerlands. Jane’s house is nearby the twin’s, less than a quarter mile, if one cuts through some backyards. Edith and Anne were the daughters of Frank Tolman and Hope Mason. Frank and Hope appear to have met when they were students at the University of Chicago. Both were librarians. They married in 1906 and shortly thereafter moved to Albany where Frank had secured a job with the New York State Library. By about 1910 they were living in their 1583 New Scotland Road home. Tragically, Hope died young at age 43 in 1919 leaving behind her husband, daughters and two sons, Leland and Mason. Tragedy struck again in 1949 when Anne was struck and killed by a train while walking on the tracks near her home. It was her 33nd birthday. Mason Tolman is the connection to the Mullens Road house. On December 26, 1942, Mason married Betsy Mullens. Betsy is the daughter of Clarence Mullens and Mary Slingerland. Clarence, born in Albany to a large family, graduated from Albany Medical College in 1912 and had a lifelong career as a physician and surgeon. In early 1913 he was introduced to Mary Slingerland by a mutual friend, Albany lawyer Thomas H. Hunn. Mary was the only daughter of Cornelius Slingerland and Nellie Mattice. Cornelius, the grandson of John I. Slingerland, a scion of the hamlet of Slingerlands, was working as a printer as early as the 1880 census when he (age 19) and his father John (age 52) are both listed as printers. Cornelius went on the found the Slingerland Printing Company (whose former buildings are still prominent in the hamlet.) Cornelius and Nellie

married in 1882. Daughter Mary was born in 1889. They are the ones who built elegant Victorian home at the end of Mullens Road in close proximity to the printing company. Letters from the courtship and early marriage (dating between 1913 and 1918) of Mary Slingerland and Clarence Mullens were preserved by the family and make for interesting reading. One letter from July 1913 ends with “Well, Mary… I close with love. As ever, Mull” Another dated September 6, 1917 closes with “Please write me some news of Bobby and Betsy…With a lot of love to all our children, I am Your loving hubby, Clarence.”

Th cri lar firs co he

Clarence and Mary were married November 14, 1914. Being a physician, Clarence served with the 5th Division Sanitary Train during World War I. Captain Mullens was honorably discharged in January 1919 and he returned he and Mary’s Albany home. Shortly thereafter the couple moved to Mary’s childhood home in Slingerlands.

This New Scotland Road house was owned by the Tolmans from about 1910 to 1957. In 1957 it was purchased by Robert and Elizabeth Rowe and in 1984 it was purchased by the Shermans.

Betsy Mullens and Mason Tolman, Sr. were married in 1942 and in turn raised their children, Andy, Laura and Mason, Jr at the Mullens Road house. Betsy and Mason were almost certainly childhood acquaintances, and Betsy was close friend of Edith Tolman, Mason’s sister. Mason, Jr and his wife Jane moved into the Mullens Road Victorian in 2001, keeping the house in the Slingerlands-Mullens-Tolman family for four generations.

The Mullens Road home was always a working farm. Today, the corn crib, ice house and chicken coop still stand on the property as does the large carriage barn built in the 1930s. Dr. Mullens saw patients on the first floor and there was a well-appointed artist studio on the second complete with north facing skylight windows. Both Mary Mullens and her daughter Betsy Mullens Tolman were artists.

Dear Neighbor, In 1942, the Bethlehem Community White Christmas Festival began as several Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund

has been to provide financial assistance for emergency needs of residents of the Town of Bethlehem and students of Bethlehem Central School District, when such needs are not covered by other agencies or sources. These matters are treated with confidentiality. School personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services & other providers make most of the requests for assistance.

Bethlehem

Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942

Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a long-standing tradition of the Bethlehem Community Fund.

Funds are used for short-term emergency needs like medical expenses, utility or insurance bill assistance, auto/home repair bills, educational supplies and unreimbursable school related expenses or personal emergencies except in extenuating circumstances which will require additional details and justification.

• Each December over 100 Bethlehem families in need receive Holiday Food Baskets. With the Holiday Season fast approaching, the Bethlehem Community Fund is looking at a record number of families needing assistance. Financial responsibilities and human service needs in our schools and community increase during this time of year. Our goal of $30,000 will enable us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors this winter and throughout the year.

Your gift will touch the lives of our less fortunate neighbor in the Bethlehem community. Thank you for your support of this valuable community effort. Warmest regards,

YMCA Giving Tree Brings Holiday Spirit

Please sing along with me now….”it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, every single day, take a look by lobby desk, a tree trimmed with all the best, it’s the Giving Tree at the YMCA.” The Giving Tree is a holiday tradition at the Bethlehem YMCA. One that brings warmth to the hearts of those who give and a smile on the faces of children who receive. The tree is decorated with ornaments handmade by children of YMCA members. On each ornament is written a small gift and some information about a child who otherwise may not have a present on Christmas morning.

Last year, more than 300 low income families were recipients of gifts from the YMCA Giving Tree. Every year we see more and more families that don’t request toys at Christmas, but instead need things like gift cards for food, shampoo, a blanket, diapers and formula, coats, hats and boots. YMCA members can take an ornament off the tree, purchase the gift listed on the ornament, bring it to the Y, and we will get it to the family in time for Christmas. We identify children and families by working with the Bethlehem School District, as well as recipients of YMCA scholarships from our Annual Campaign. One of the great gifts we receive is when a family is contacted because they previously received a YMCA Giving Tree gift, and they thank us and say life is getting better, their situation has improved, and they no longer need our assistance. However, so many families in Bethlehem are still in need of help. With your spirit of giving, the holidays will be brighter for those in need.

The Y offers a variety of on-site services that are interactive and engaging, but most of all convenient because we bring them to you. These services include: team-building classes, group exercise classes, lunch and learn programs, safety training, health assessments, walking and running groups, small group personal training, massage therapy, and attendance at health fairs. Providing a wellness program is a great way for your organization to create a culture of healthy living and invest in your most important resource – your employees. The health of your employees is a pivotal piece contributing to better productivity. Plus, it gives your employee benefit program an added option that leads to greater employee satisfaction and retention. The numbers make a strong case for checking out the YMCA’s Corporate Membership and Wellness Programs. Seventyfive percent of health care costs are driven by preventable and manageable chronic disease, such as heart disease and diabetes. The number of work days missed each year by full-time employees who are overweight or obese and have chronic disease tops 450 million. And 77 percent of employees say that wellness programs positively influence the culture at work. For more information on the YMCA’s Wellness at Work program, please contact Lisa Wolcott at 518-869-3500 x9927, or email her at LWolcott@CDYCMA.org.

Most people are in a hurry when they get to the Y. A hurry to start their workout. A hurry to get to the their car and get home. Please, next time you come to the Bethlehem YMCA, take just a moment in the lobby to look at the Giving Tree and consider taking an ornament home with you and donating a gift. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. If you help make someone’s holiday brighter with a simple act of kindness, it will feel a lot like Christmas too. YMCA Corporate Wellness Program As the cost of health care and health insurance continue to rise, businesses of all sizes are putting a premium on having a healthy workforce to save money and ensure productivity. The YMCA can help businesses achieve these goals through its Wellness at Work program. While a business owner can’t ensure employees get to the Y, he or she can bring the Y to his employees, and/or establish a corporate membership at local YMCAs throughout the Capital District, including the Bethlehem Y. Forging a partnership between your organization, your employees and the Capital District YMCA enables you to utilize all our facilities to work toward a healthier mind, body and spirit for all.

Season’s Greetings my dear readers…. As I write this, I am still reflecting upon Thanksgiving and those things for which I am most thankful: My Darlin’ Dad who has resided at the beautiful Teresian House for almost a year I give thanks for his selfless caretakers, the Carmelite sisters, the Nurses, CNAs and volunteers. I open my eyes next to the love of my life for the past 40 years followed by the energetic greeting from the cutest little companion dog ever, Seamus! Proud to be a Mom & Nonna…mother to Matthew & Ryan and Nonna to Connor, Skye, Trinity, Gunner & Raven. They are my heart! My life is full because of the wonderful sisters, brother, in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Another Christmas season for Tattered Pages in the Glenmont Center Square where my customers are the best! I am ever thankful for my customer/friends who help to make my day! This last Small Business Saturday was such a success because of their participation. When “Our Towne” arrives…you may not even have the time to stop, relax & read this! The busiest season of the year is upon us. The frost is on the windshields, a nip in the air, and dusk begins somewhere around 4:30pm! Yikes…so little daylight and so much to do! But as I put the Christmas novels out on the top of the shelves… put the Christmas craft books out…and stop to browse thru each children’s Christmas book…I also reflect over those holidays past. Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah…there is no denying that this time of the year when we enter into Winter is unique. Besides dressing in layers, digging out the gloves, hats, scarves, the ice scraper, & our shovels…many spend just a bit more time baking, cooking, crafting, shopping, wrapping etc. In your very busy schedule I hope that you might have time for 2 things: #1 stop by Tattered Pages Used Books to Shop (for books or gift certificates) A book can tie a theme together for a great gift basket! Gift certificates are available year round! #2 Tell a friend or family member about Tattered Pages Used Books a locally owned & operated small business. We are conveniently located in the Glenmont Center Square at the corners of Route 9W South & Feura Bush Rd. With W Couture Boutique, Romo’s Pizza, Subway, VIP Nail & Hot Harry’s in the same location, you could find a shopping stop to be most pleasurable! We have 19,000+ titles on our shelves…most in next to new condition. We have our entire data base in our computer and can tell you if we have a book in our store with just a simple phone call to us. We have books that are newly published, brought in by our wonderful customers who participate in our trade credit program; as well as older, classic one of kind books. So many of our books would make great gifts! I still have several autographed copies of our “Historic Tales of Bethlehem” by our Town Historian Susan Leath here for sale.

The gift of reading & enjoying books is one of the greatest gifts that you can give a child. I have written about my grandchildren, nieces & nephews over the years. They know that they will always receive at least one book from me. I am always available to help match you up with just the right books for your Holiday gift giving. Just added more books in fantasy, Choose your own adventure books, and Goosebumps chapter books to the children’s section. Many of you know that I have a friend who is a founding crafter at the Delmar Farmer’s Market, Dana. Dana will be here hosting an earring extravaganza at the bookshop on December 17th from 11-4pm. Her earrings are sterling silver wires, high end beads, Swarovski crystals and wrapped silver wire all starting under $10. There will be several specials in the bookshop on that day as well. In closing, may I take this time to thank all of you who have come into the shop over the past 10 years. Please tell others about me so that I can continue to be a small business in Bethlehem. During the winter months, I will admit, sales often drop off. If you could just remember that I am here waiting to help you find just the right book, I will always do my utmost to provide the best service, selection and value. As 2017 approaches, I ask that you all find peace, joy, happiness and a good book in your future! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is manager of Tattered Pages Used Books, 365 Feura Bush Rd.
