People wonder how to best way to communicate with a deaf dog. Love and empathy are the first steps. Don’t Ask the get frustrated that your dog no longer responds to you the same way he used to. Train your dog to understand hand signals. Use signs he can easily see from far away. If you want to get your dog’s attention inside the house, the vibration from a loud stomp may make him take In honor of the last week of September, better notice. Using a flashlight or laser penlight can also be known as Deaf Dog Awareness Week, here is used to get attention. Make sure your dog knows when some information to assist our hard of hearing you’ve come into a room and when you’re leaving by dogs and the people who love them. tapping him gently on the back or shoulder.

Canterbury Vet

Deafness can be categorized in three ways. • Congenital. Although any dog (like any person) can be born deaf, congenital deafness is most common in dogs with white, piebald or merle markings. Commonly affected breeds include the Dalmatian, Harlequin Great Danes, English Bulldog, Bull Terrier and Australian Shepherd. While it was once common practice for dogs who were born deaf to be euthanized, that’s no longer the case as deaf dogs can be raised and trained to be wonderful family pets. • Illness or injury. Injury to the ear can cause deafness, as can some medications. Chronic, severe ear infections can damage hearing as well. In some cases temporary hearing loss can be treated with medication to restore full function. • Old age. In aging dogs, as in aging people, gradual hearing loss is common. In many cases people will not notice a dog’s hearing loss until it’s severe. Dogs rely upon other senses and adjust to this change to keep up with normal household activities. Regardless of the kind of deafness your dog has, discuss it with your veterinarian. Dogs with wax plugs, foreign bodies in the ear canal, or infections may be able to return to full function with proper treatment. For dogs with inherited deafness (such as in Dalmatians), spayneuter is a must. The following signs may indicate that your dog may be suffering from some form of hearing loss: •Your dog doesn’t know you’re in the room until you physically touch him or he sees you. •Your dog turns the wrong way when you call him. •He shows no response to outside stimuli, such as the doorbell ringing or other dogs barking. •His head shakes. •He shows no response or seems confused when given familiar vocal commands. •He barks excessively. •He paws his ears or appears to have itchy, painful ears or smelly discharge coming from his ears. 8

There are other important ways to help a deaf dog. Don’t let a deaf dog roam. Keep deaf dogs leashed or inside a secure fence. Off-leash recreation is not recommended for these dogs, as they cannot hear an approaching car or come to you when called. Some owners of deaf dogs have fashioned vibrating collars to cue dogs to look for hand signals. Ensure your dog has ID, both a tag and a microchip, in case he wanders off. It’s also a good idea to have the tag say, “I’m deaf.” Finally, never startle a deaf dog, especially when he’s sleeping. A hard stomp that sends vibrations through the floorboards may be enough to wake your dog, or you may need to touch him gently on his body. Deafness never stopped a dog from having a good life. Whether he was born deaf or became that way later in life, he’ll have no trouble enjoying his life with you, as long as you’re looking out for him. as well as any member of the Bethlehem Police force are always here to help!

The hot and hazy summer days are dwindling as we head into the early fall, summer vacation is over and our children are going back Finally, I’d like to share one more community activity from our to school. We had a busy summer season and the demands on efforts in August and ask for your help. law enforcement were high, especially with reduced staffing our officers have been busy, often working overtime. Let me introduce you to the Hotaling family. The family currently resides in Ravena, but they are very much a part of the Bethlehem Again, what your elected officials are STILL not telling you is community. Jessica used to work at Angela’s Pizza in Glenmont, that they use overtime as a cost saving measure to avoid hiring Wesley works construction and also works at the American additional officers and paying new employee benefits such as Legion in Delmar, and Emmett’s grandparents live in the Town of health care and retirement. The same mismanagement can be Bethlehem. seen with our dispatchers. Routinely, dispatchers are forced to stay an extra 4-8 hours on each shift because of low staffing levels. Jessica and Wesley’s 2 Many are only given a moments notice requiring this mandatory ½ year-old son Emmett overtime. Our officers and dispatchers would rather spend more was born with a very time with their families. It’s unfortunate that Clarkson continues to serious heart condition, inflate overtime, blame the police unions, and have no regard for in fact, having his first the families of law enforcement. open heart surgery when he was 6 monthsDespite these pressures both personally and professionally, we old. He now needs his continue to strive to promote public safety and our officers find second open heart time to give back to the Bethlehem community. Last month we surgery which will be told you about a number of community events the Bethlehem performed in September police supported, including an event we did in June, presenting at the Children’s Hospital our young friend Rylan Gaffney with a new bicycle to commend his in Boston. He will decisive action avoiding injury in a motor vehicle accident. Since undergo an operation its back to school time – we talked to our Family Services officers that includes closing about reviewing the importance of biking safety for Bethlehem’s off two chambers of his families. heart, and relocating the bottom functioning Here are some tips to keep you and your kids safechamber to the top so his heart will work better.

• First when biking, no matter how old or how good of a cyclist you are, an approved and properly fitted helmet should be worn. • A quick A B C check should be done before setting out for a ride (Air in tires, Brakes work, Chain is tight). • Bicyclists need to follow the same rules of the road as any motor vehicle. You need to stop for stop signs and red lights and use hand signals to indicate turns. • Bicyclists are to ride WITH traffic and be on the right side of the travel lane. By law, motorists have to pass a bicyclist on the left at a safe distance. • New York State law also requires that all bicycles be equipped with a bell as well as a white light in front and a red light in the rear during ride times one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. • When biking in a group, riders should not be more than 2 wide. • Sidewalks are designed for pedestrian use. If a bicyclist chooses to ride on the sidewalk the right of way is to be given to those walking on the sidewalk and EXTREME caution should be used when approaching and crossing any driveways or roadways. • Please remember that you are always safer in numbers. If you encounter a suspicious vehicle or person(s) while you are biking or walking, please report it immediately by calling 911.

Emmett’s family needs to raise money to help with medical, travel and lodging expenses for the family in Boston. Our police unions donated to the cause in early August (pictured above) and we continue to support this endeavor. The family is unsure how long Emmett will be in the hospital after this surgery. The last time he was in for 8 weeks and had a difficult time being weaned off the ventilator. Jess will be staying with him the entire time, unfortunately his dad Wes may only be able to take off one week to be there.

16

There are donation jugs out at a few local businesses – at the Delmar Market Place & McCarroll’s The Village Butcher, My Place & Company, and at Swifty’s. Donations can also be made on line at GOFUNDME.COM under “Emmett’s Boston Trip” and at any Cap Com Federal Credit Union branch under the name “Team Emmett”. Please consider joining the Bethlehem police and support this family that needs our help. As always, we appreciate and thank you for your support. Don’t forget – please review biking and walking safety with your kids - whether they walk or bike to school or just cruise around the neighborhood – these tips will help ensure their safety. Have a safe and fun-filled Labor Day weekend!

FINANCIAL FOCU$ A College Degree is Still a Smart Investment Summer is almost over, which means it’s “back-to-school” time. If you have young children, you may be purchasing backpacks, pencils, notebooks and similar items. But one day, you could be shopping for colleges — and when you do, you’ll find the bill is a little bit higher than the one you get from your local school-supply store. That’s why it’s never too soon to start saving. Just how costly is college? For the 2014–2015 school year, the average expense — tuition, fees, room and board — was $18,943 at a public four-year school and $42,419 at a fouryear private school, according to the College Board. And if recent history is any guide, these numbers will likely keep climbing. But there’s no need to panic. For one thing, your child may be eligible for loans, grants or scholarships. Still, you will likely end up shouldering some of the financial load, and you may ask yourself if it’s worth it. How much difference can a college degree make in the lives of your children? Actually, college still seems to be a pretty good investment: The average college graduate will receive about $1 million more in lifetime earnings than the average high school graduate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So when you assist your children in getting to college, you can be reasonably sure that you’re at least helping them start on the path toward a rewarding career. How should you put away money for college? Unfortunately, more parents use a general savings account than any other

with Jerry Pittz

method, according to Sallie Mae’s How America Saves for College 2015 study. These accounts pay little or no interest and offer no tax benefits. As an alternative, consider investing in a 529 plan. Contribution limits are quite high, and federal taxes won’t be assessed on earnings used for qualified higher education expenses. (The earnings portion of withdrawals will be taxed, though, and can incur a 10% penalty if the withdrawals aren’t used for qualified expenses.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. But 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility. Another college funding option is a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate taxfree earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a Coverdell account, but it offers more flexibility in investment choices than a 529 plan. You could also consider a custodial account, known as either UGMA or UTMA. You can put up to $14,000 per year into a custodial account without incurring gift taxes, and earnings would only be subject to the “kiddie tax” — that is, the first $1,050 is tax-exempt, the next $1,050 will be taxed at the child’s tax rate, and just the amount over $2,100 will be taxed at your tax rate. However, once your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21), they take control of the money and can do whatever they want with it — and their plans may not include college. Don’t wait too long to begin funding whichever savings vehicle, or vehicles, you choose. Your children may be young today, but before you know it, they’ll be college bound.

Then

& Now Five Rivers, the Delmar Zoo and the Civilian Conservation Corp By Susan E. Leath

Beaver Pond is barely full in this circa 1935 view of the spillway and dam on the Vloman Kill. Many of massive limestone blocks used for construction by Ruffed Grouse Company on the Five Rivers property were repurposed from the Erie Canal.

“They let me hold a bear cub.” Dawn Pratt and many others have vivid memories of the Delmar Zoo. From 1948 to 1970 what we now know as Five Rivers Environmental Education Center was visited every year by thousands of families and school groups. They came to see the caged wildlife, and as Pratt remembers, even hold and bottle feed some of the animals. Over the years, deer and waterfowl, fox and bobcat, raccoon and opossum and many more lived there. One year, a trio of bear cubs named Rosy, Posy and Dosy were the popular residents of the Bear Pen. A talking crow by the name of Jimmy provided commentary. Think back to life at the turn of the 20th century, say 1900 or so. The majority of Bethlehem area residents were making a living farming often supplemented with hunting and fishing. The landscape was very different with forests cut down to make way for hay fields and dairy pasture. This led to a decline in natural habitats. The end of the nineteenth century was a low point for American wildlife. “Ruthlessly exploited for profit, some species and subspecies were wiped out entirely, and many others brought to the very brink of oblivion.”* In response, nationwide and in New York, we have the beginning of the conservationist movement. Unregulated hunting and loss of habitat continued lead to serious population declines in popular game animals like wild turkey, wood ducks and deer. The Delmar Experimental Game Farm was established in 1933 by the New York State Conservation Department to study the propagation and management of game birds and water fowl, especially the ruffed grouse. The Conservation Department, established in 1928, traces its history back to the 1880s when the state appointed its first “game protectors” who were later known as conservation officers. In turn, the Conservation Department was a forerunner of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation formed in 1970. Under the leadership of Arthur A. Allen, the 113 acre Ackerman farm was purchased. Located just over the Bethlehem line in the town of New Scotland the farm along the Vloman Kill is the nucleolus of today’s 446 acre Five Rivers. In November 1933 Company 270 – a.k.a. Company Ruffed Grouse – of the Civilian Conservation Corps moved in and established Camp S-72 in order to get

the Delmar Experimental Game Farm up and running. In three years the 200 man encampment constructed roads, paths, walls, dams, buildings, installed water and sewer lines, and worked at feeding and caring for the game birds being raised on the farm.

A postcard view of the camp that Ruffed Grouse Company established at Five Rivers.

The CCC was part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal. Its purpose was twofold. One, it provided young men with a chance to learn skills and gain work experience while earning $30 a month, $25 of which was sent home to their families. Food, lodging and clothing were provided. Two, the Corps provided the skill and labor for many, many environmental conservation projects nationwide. The informal Delmar Zoo grew out of the efforts of Clint and Frances Bishop to share their love for wildlife. Clint was a conservation aide at the Game Farm and he and his wife kept a lively assortment of wildlife at their nearby farm. Many were brought to Clint for rehabilitation after having been injured. The public displays also served to draw the curious away from the sensitive experiments being conducted at the Wildlife Research Center which was established here in 1941. The environmental thinking behind the breeding and release of game birds began to change in the 1960s with the emphasis shifting to habitats and diversity of species and away from replenishing stock animals. That shift, along

CAR CARE TIPS DOES ENGINE COOLANT GO BAD?

The same view today is obstructed by much vegetative growth. Compare the hillside in the background; once a farmer’s field, now covered in woods.

with the reorganization of the Conservation Department, contributed to the closing of the Game Farm and zoo in 1970. A public outcry promptly ensued. Local activists successfully convinced the state to open an environmental education center here, and today’s Five Rivers was born.

Yes, engine coolant does deteriorate over time, but unless something unusual occurs, you probably won’t need to change the coolant in most late-model vehicles until 100,000 miles. Older vehicles probably require more frequent coolant replacement, so check your owner’s manual to be sure. Most manufacturers now use extended-life coolant with a recommended change interval of 100,000 miles. That varies based on maintenance schedules for each manufacturer and individual models. Some Subarus, for example, call for coolant replacement after 13 years or 132,500 miles. Many Ford engines say to replace it after the first 100,000 miles and every 50,000 miles thereafter, though heavy-duty applications (such as frequent towing) should have it done more often. No matter what the maintenance schedule is for your vehicle, after a few years of ownership it is a good idea to have the coolant checked by a professional periodically for acid buildup, rust and other contaminants, and for its resistance to freezing and boiling. If you have added water (particularly tap water) to top off the cooling system, you may have introduced contaminants or diluted the antifreeze/water mix (generally 50/50) and altered the freezing and boiling points.

Ruffed Grouse Company built extensive barracks for their encampment. Goose Lodge is one of the few that remain at Five Rivers.

The name Five Rivers reflects the main waterways of center’s service area watershed: the Hudson, Mohawk, Hoosic and Sacandaga rivers and the Schoharie creek. The history of Five Rivers tells the story of changing attitudes towards wildlife, natural history and conservation of natural resources. *Steve Nicholls, as quoted in Five Rivers the History of a Special Place by RoseAnne Fogarty, Morgan Gmelch and John Smolinsky

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian. She is the author of Bethlehem an illustrative history of our town with over 200 images dating from the 1880s to 1960. The book is available at local booksellers and online. Visit her blog at: BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com. Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org

If your engine is running hotter than normal, deteriorated coolant could be a possible cause. Most manufacturers and service shops recommend flushing the cooling system at the same time the coolant is replaced to get rid of deposits that accumulated over the years. Manufacturers specify certain types of antifreeze, and some may be red, others pink or green, but don’t go to an auto parts store looking for the right color. You need to ask for the right type of antifreeze for your vehicle, whether you’re adding some yourself or having it replaced by a pro.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Scott Card, Frank Herbert, and Frederick Pohl, many titles which I never had in the shop. A young man came into the shop recently and said, “I only have 5 minutes left of my lunch break; would you pick out 2 books that you personally have enjoyed in your life. I thought he was joking! I handed him “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” and “Everything is Illuminated”. He popped in the following week and said, thumbs up, “One down, one to go!” He wouldn’t tell me which one he had finished, but he said, “So far, great suggestion!” With school opening soon, remember my background in Elementary Education (teacher, curriculum coordinator, Principal) I would love to connect your child with just the right book. Throughout the year your child will have reading requirements. If I do not have the book in the shop, I would be glad to order it for you at significant savings over “Full Price” stores and pass the savings on to you. My little business partner, Seamus, who is now 11, has had a great summer greeting children, adults, dogs and still seems to have a fondness for redheads of all ages! People often ask if I worry about Seamus taking off when the door of the shop is wide open! Of course, I’m not! Why would he wander? Then one day 2 lovely college age girls were carrying Seamus back to me where I was assisting someone in the children’s section. They asked, “Is this your dog?” Then they giggled, “Well he was just standing in line at Romo’s Pizza next door!” What can I say! My dog knows good pizza! Thank you to all of my loyal bookshop friends who make each visit so enjoyable. Your loyalty, support and referrals are deeply appreciated! Being a small business owner is both rewarding and challenging. The largest used bookstore in the area, The Book Barn, closed at the end of July after 24 years in business. E-books, traffic patterns near his store, but mainly the owner of the building could make more selling his land over collecting rent, similar to what happened to Hoffman’s Playland, is the reason he closed. I am sorry he couldn’t find another location. I will be keeping my Anniversary Table in the shop. Currently there are 45 bestsellers & books of interest, including a few children’s books, for only $5. (Your trade credits can be applied to them also!) I still offer a free book for $20 in sales! I still offer DVDs, greeting cards and my special $1 Table! In closing, I am looking forward to the Fall and what changes that will be happening nearby. I always hope for more visibility, new customers, new readers, new friends. My next article will be a review of the books which I took on my vacation to Maine. Until then… happy reading!

Dear Constant Reader, Well, how did your summer reading go? Was it different than other times of the year? Did you allow yourself more time for reading because you watched television less? Did you have the opportunity to sit outside to read more? Did you pack a separate bag for your books when you went on vacation? Did you get into a series, experience a new author or genre? Did you delve into a mystery poolside, a romance lakeside, or crafting books while you learned a new technique? Did a child in your life wait until the last minute to read their required summer reading? Were you scrambling to find that copy of “Brave New World”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “The Kiterunner”, “The Things They Carried”, “The Outsiders”? Or, did your child amaze you by the amount of reading that they did on their own just for pleasure? When my children were on swimteam (Go Glenside Dolphins!) they had a lot of down time between heats. Often they played cards, or listened to music, but many would “dive” back into their books. I loved hearing a group discuss their readings with each other! Lifeguards would share their books around. My granddaughter, Trinity, brought a book with her while on vacation with my son, her Dad. Her book, “Willimena and the Cookie Money” was about a Girl Scout Brownie who uses her cookie money to help a poor family & then has to deal with the panic and responsibility of replacing that money when the cookie money comes due. It really drew her in, as she has graduated to Junior Girl Scout this year. She & her Dad would predict chapters, suggest solutions to the problem and even brought in a few math lessons while discussing the story problem. I have always thought of reading as a gateway to your life. She connected to the story more intently because she has been in Scouts for 2 years, and has had the temptation of the cookie money! Reading helps me to connect with my darlin’ Dad. Living at Rosewood Gardens, he often has little to talk about, so I fill the gap by reading to him. This helps us, especially on days when talking seems difficult for him. Our recent read, by Father Joseph Girzone “The Parables of Joshua” are a series of short teaching parables that are just a few pages long. Short enough for his attention span, they often bring some memories to the surface for us to talk about. My Dad was a constant reader so this is a great way to connect. We have a drawer filled with books in his room. My sister reads the saint of the day when she visits and another prayer a day to him. This summer, here in the shop, I have had the Trish, Linda & Seamus pleasure of meeting so many new customers & devoted readers. I recently took in 200 new children’s books, from Patricia Eldridge is the owner/manager of Tattered Pages picture books to chapter books. My history section is at 365 Feura Bush Rd. Glenmont, NY 12077 #447-9910, overflowing and I will need to find more room for these Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC, books! I just recently shelved about 50 books into my Scimytatteredpages@gmail.com, Fi collection; paperback novels by Isaac Asimov, Orson Open: M,T,W: 10-5, Th. 10-6, Fri. 10-7, Sat. 10-4 32

Heartburn & GERD Management Heartburn is defined as a burning sensation which travels up from the lower chest towards the throat. Meal-related heartburn usually occurs within 2 hours of eating a large meal or trigger foods/beverages including spicy, citrus, fatty, carbonated, caffeinated, or alcohol-containing items. Individuals may also experience heartburn when performing activities such as exercise, bending, or lying down. Other risk factors include smoking, stress, genetics, obesity, and pregnancy. GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) occurs when a person experiences frequent (more than twice weekly) and persistent (lasting longer than 3 months) heartburn, as well as indigestion, nausea or bloating. Lifestyle changes which may help control your heartburn symptoms include: avoiding trigger foods or beverages, eating smaller meals, refraining from eating at least 3 hours before bedtime or before lying down, and avoiding tight-fitting clothing or belts. A variety of OTC (over-the-counter) treatment options are available, each with unique characteristics. Antacids such as Tums or Maalox provide symptom relief within 5 minutes, however their effects are short-lasting (about 20-30 minutes). Antacids are often used to control milder symptoms of heartburn,or for infrequent episodes of reflux. Possible side effects of magnesium-containing antacids include diarrhea, whereas aluminum-containing antacids tend to cause constipation. Antacids such as Tums may cause belching and gas. If you need assistance with identifying any of these products, don’t hesitate to ask your pharmacist. Medications such as Pepcid (famotidine) or Zantac (ranitidine) are used for patients experiencing mildmoderate symptoms who prefer a longer-lasting therapy. This drug class may take 30-45 minutes to provide relief, which usually lasts 4-10 hours. Individuals can also use Zantac or Pepcid to prevent heartburn, for example, 30-60 minutes before a meal or exercise. When one desires rapid relief plus longer duration, combination options are also available (Pepcid Complete, or Tums Dual Action). Since tolerance to these medications may occur, patients are encouraged to use Zantac or Pepcid on an as-needed basis, rather than daily. Possible side effects may include headache, dizziness, diarrhea or constipation.

In situations when someone is experiencing severe, frequent (more than twice weekly) heartburn which has not responded to antacids (Tums, Maalox) or to Zantac and Pepcid, the drugs of choice would be Prilosec (Omeprazole), Nexium (Esomeprazole), or Prevacid (Lansoprazole). This class of drugs may require more time to provide relief (from 2-3 hours up to 4 days), however the relief experienced tends to be longer-lasting (12-24 hours) and superior to any other heartburn medication. These medications are not intended to be used for immediate relief of occasional heartburn episodes. The tablets or capsules should be taken whole, preferably with a full glass of water, and not crushed, broken or chewed (doing so will make them less effective). Potential side effects may include: constipation, diarrhea or headache. If used long-term (over 1 year), Prilosec, Nexium or Prevacid may predispose certain patients to developing infections (pneumonia, C.difficile ) or increase the risk of fractures, especially in people over 50 years of age. As a general rule, no antacid therapy should be used without medical supervision for longer than 14 days. Once your doctor recommends that you remain on antacid therapy long-term, that is considered fine, so long as you are being monitored regularly. If you are experiencing any of the following, you should notify your doctor and see if a referral is needed: frequent heartburn lasting more than 3 months, heartburn that has not responded to any form of treatment after 2 weeks, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood or passing dark, tarry stools, unexplained weight loss, and constant nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Due to recent changes in insurance coverage, certain heartburn medications are no longer covered on some insurances. Please speak with your pharmacist for further information on affordable alternative options. Obtaining heartburn medications through a prescription may help your pharmacist better track your medication history, and potential drug interactions, while also allowing your doctor to monitor the progress of your condition. They may also be covered on Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) when received through a prescription. References Krinsky DL, Hume AL, and Ferreri SP. Handbook of Non-prescription Drugs, 18th Edition. AS THE WEATHER COOLS DOWN, THE YMCA HEATS UP! Fall News and Notes For the Bethlehem YMCA

MEMBER APPRECIATION PICNIC – The annual Bethlehem YMCA member appreciation picnic will be held on Friday September 11th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a movie to follow. Let us show you how much we appreciate you with free hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks, snacks and entertainment for everyone in the family. The picnic will be located behind the Y at the pavilion. DAY CARE AND PRE SCHOOL PROGRAMS -- The Bethlehem YMCA has several different options and programs to provide the highest quality care for young children. Partial day preschool for children ages 3 and 4 helps kids develop cognitive, physical and social/emotional skills, as well as build self-confidence. They will have fun while they are learning through swimming, ice skating, doing science, math, literacy, art and music. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.. You can register children three months prior to their third birthday.

CUE THEATRE ACTING PROGRAM – The next Tom Cruise or Jennifer Lawrence might be getting his or her start on stage at the Cue Theatre at the Bethlehem YMCA. During this special acting and performing class at the Y, budding actors and actresses will learn lines, songs, staging, blocking and choreography over nine weeks, culminating with a stage performance for family and friends on November 23rd at the Cue Theatre on Delaware Avenue just east of the Four Corners. The program runs from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. and begins on September 21st. For more information contact Rusty Decker at the Y at 439-4394. FAMILY BOOT CAMP - We are bringing back family boot camp which keeps the kids and parents moving and having fun. It will be held on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.. SPORT COURT UP – ICE DOWN -- The Y’s sport court surface will be taken up and the ice rink will be put down during the first week of September. The ice will be cold and ready on Tuesday September 8th for another great winter season.

Member, Bethlehem YMCA Board of Advisors

For school-age kids from Kindergarten through 6th grade, the YMCA has an excellent before and after school enrichment program to help kids learn values and positive behaviors, as well as explore their unique talents and interests. By nurturing their development, the Y’s program will help your child build a solid foundation, develop self-reliance and core values such as honesty, respect and responsibility so they can realize their full potential. This program runs Monday through Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. and from school dismissal to 6 p.m... The Bethlehem YMCA also offers a partial day, pre-kindergarten program for children ages 4 and 5. Kids will have the opportunity to make friends while preparing for kindergarten, and will build skills and self-confidence through a combination of teachdirected and child-initiated activities in both group and oneon-one settings. Children are encouraged to explore their own interests to help them grow and develop. The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.. To register, children must be 5 years old by December 1st. If you have any questions about any of the child care programs available at the Bethlehem YMCA, please contact our Childcare Coordinator, Katie Egan, at 439-4394, or stop by the Y to see our excellent programs and facilities. ABI BASKETBALL CAMP – The ABI (All Basketball Inc.) camp is back at the Bethlehem Y! We have received such a tremendous response to this camp we are bringing it back again, on September 19th and 20th, to help budding LeBrons, Carmelos and Mayas develop their skills in time for the coming basketball season. ABI was founded by local legend coach Rich Hurley who has been coaching high school basketball for more than 19 years and has won multiple sectional and league championships, as well as a state championship. At this camp, the fundamentals of both offense and defense will be taught in a challenging and fast paced format. Each player will be able to take what they have learned from this camp and apply these skills to make themselves a better basketball player. The camp is for children in grades 5 through 8 and is limited to 45 boys and 45 girls. The camp for girls will run from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. each day and the boy’s camp will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day. The cost of attending the camp is $40 for just Saturday or Sunday; or $75 to attend both days.
