FINANCIAL FOCU$ Women Business Owners: Don’t Forget About Your Retirement Plan American Business Women’s Day is celebrated on Sept. 22. And there is indeed cause for celebration, because, in recent decades, the number of women business owners has risen sharply, to the point where nearly 40 percent of all businesses are now women-owned, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. If you are one of these owners, or thinking about becoming one, you’ll always have a lot to think about when running your business, but there’s also an area you can’t ignore – your retirement. Specifically, you need to consider establishing your own retirement plan. Most plans available to you are fairly easy to establish and maintain, and are not terribly costly to administer. Here are some popular options: Owner-only 401(k) – This plan, also known as an individual or solo 401(k), is available to self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a spouse. For 2018, you can put in up to 25 percent of your annual income as an “employer” contribution, and you can defer up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older). The sum of your employer contribution and your salary deferrals cannot exceed $55,000, or $61,000 if you’re 50 or older. You can make elective contributions on a pre- or post-tax (Roth) basis. Pre-tax contributions reduce your taxable income for the current year. Roth contributions don’t offer any immediate tax benefit, but any qualified withdrawals will be 100% tax-free. SEP IRA – If you have just a few employees or are selfemployed with no employees, you may want to

with Jerry Pittz

consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with taxdeductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees. As an employer, you can contribute the lesser of 25% of your compensation (if you’re also an employee of your own business) or $55,000. Solo defined benefit plan – Pension plans, also known as defined benefit plans, are less common than in previous years, but you can still set one up for yourself if you’re self-employed or own your own business. This plan has high contribution limits, which are determined by an actuarial calculation, and your contributions are typically tax-deductible. SIMPLE IRA — A SIMPLE IRA, as its name suggests, is easy to set up and maintain, and it can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees. However, while a SIMPLE IRA may be advantageous for your employees, it’s less generous to you, as far as allowable contributions go, than an owner-only 401(k), a SEP IRA or a defined benefit plan. For 2018, your annual contributions are generally limited to $12,500, or $15,500 if you’re 50 or older by the end of the year. You can also make a matching contribution of up to 3% of your compensation. As an employer, your contributions are fully deductible as a business expense up to certain limits; as an employee, your pretax contributions reduce the amount of your taxable income for the same tax year. Before opening any of these plans, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor on the tax issues and a financial professional on the investment aspects. But don’t wait too long. You will need to work hard to keep your business thriving – so choose a retirement plan that works just as hard for you. INSTALLATION & REPAIRS

Summer’s fading and fall is on the horizon. The cicadas are still singing, but soon they will be chorusing to school buses before receding with the onset of autumn colors. So of course, we’re all in the mood to talk about taxes. I raise this because, in the past, concerns about the promptness of leaf collection have usually been preceded by “I pay high taxes, but…” It’s a legitimate concern. But when I hear it, what I’m also hearing is “I’m not getting value for my tax dollar.”

So Much for So Little

What most residents, including me until recently, don’t realize is that few of our property David VanLuven Bethlehem Town Supervisor tax dollars actually go to the Town of Bethlehem. We pay our property taxes in January and September. These taxes are based on the assessed value of our properties and are distributed to 5 completely independent taxation districts, leaving just 12% – 12 cents of every dollar – for your Town government.

For that 12 cents on the dollar, we get: •24-hour police and ambulance protection •Clean drinking water & sewage removal •Senior services supporting older residents •Premier parks, pools, and trails

•186 miles of roads that are cleared of snow •57 miles of sidewalks •Curbside leaf and brush pick up •Support for businesses & economic growth •And much, much more…

This is a great return on your investment in the Town. And we appreciate your support!

Conrad had many adventures. He landed in rough and tumble Dead Wood, South Dakota for a few Two Niver years where he panned for gold and perhaps made a tidy fortune. He also had a terrible encounter with Sons and the desperados in Cheyenne, Wyoming, then a frontier town. He was shot in the arm and with much pain “Wild West” and suffering, the arm was amputated without any anesthetic. This event changed the course of his life. He later wrote in a letter to his brother Eugene By Susan E. Leath (December 1890): “While I am healthy weigh #180 yet Phoebe and David Niver of Bethlehem had seven I am a cripple, you will remember I said I was shot and remarkable children. This article looks at two of their that it left its mark well so it did marking me a cripple sons, Conrad and Garret, both of whom experienced for life, but it financially speaking and in every other the “wild west” of the 1870s in and around the Black way was the best thing that ever happened to me for it drove me from the life I was leading and made a Hills of Dakota Territory. new man of me” Let’s begin with the 1870 census. David, age 50 is a farmer with real estate valued at $10,000. Phoebe, As fate would have it, in June 1876, Conrad was also age 50, is keeping house. Their children are all passing through the area where the Battle of Little Big there: Mary (age 25, school teacher), Garret (23, Horn had recently happened. Years later he learned clerk on steam boat), Edgar (22, teacher) Anna (21 and married to Richard Van Allen but still at the Niver home), Conrad (18, teacher), Eugene (17, domestic servant) and Charles (16, at home.) The census was taken July 25, 1870, and sometime soon thereafter Conrad headed west. Three years later, Garret would follow.

Then

& Now

Garret Niver enlisted in the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry on October 2,1873, at age twenty-seven in New York City under the assumed name of Garrett H. Van Allen. He listed his occupation as farmer and the enlistment records indicate that he had blue eyes, brown hair, and was 5'7" in height. Family tradition says he used an alias order to protect his mother. The 7th Calvary was organized after the Civil War and in 1873 was stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory. Garret must have traveled there and would have served under Lt. Col. George A. Custer. One wonders if he went with Custer and the 7th Calvary when they explored the Black Hills in 1874 and found gold there. Garret was certainly part of Custer’s column on the fateful day two years later when the 7th met defeat at the hands of the Lakota and Cheyenne during the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Garrett’s memorial at Bethlehem’s Elmwood Cemetery reads “Killed in the Custer massacre on the Little Big Horn Dakota June 26, 1876.” About the same time that Garret was out west, his younger brother Conrad was also heading in that direction. After a brief time in West Barre, New York, as either a shop keeper or school teacher, and due to some poor decisions (apparently, he tried to finance his honey moon with forged bank notes) Conrad determined his only option was to change his name and go west. He started for Indian Territory probably The young man on the left of this circa 1870 photo is John around 1874 under an assumed name to make a new Eddy, AKA Conrad Niver. built a trolley line that covered the entire city. He was active in politics, serving terms as alderman and losing a bid for mayor by only 400 votes. In 1886 he was appointed Post Trader at the Sac and Fox Indian Agency in what is now Oklahoma, a post he exploited for only a short time. In 1893 Eddy was appointed postmaster of Bloomington by President Grover Cleveland. John Eddy seems to have always felt the pull of home in Bethlehem. He and Nellie moved back to the area in 1906 first purchasing the Hurlbut estate in Glenmont, then later moving to 732 Madison Avenue in Albany. That is the story of two Niver brothers from Bethlehem, New York who lived in a time when our The young man on the left of this circa 1870 photo is John country was young, and experienced the good and Eddy, AKA Conrad Niver. Ask the

Canterbury Vet September is National Pet Health Insurance Month As fewer than 2% of pet owners have pet insurance, the month is intended to promote the importance of health insurance for cats and dogs, debunk the myths surrounding coverage, and introduce pet insurance to those pet owners who are not familiar with it. As pet owners, we don't like to think of our pet's getting sick or injured, but it can happen. Having pet insurance may help you to focus on what matters most - your pets - if an accident or illness does arise. Pet insurance is coverage designed to provide pet owners with financial protection against medical costs. By helping to cover some of the cost of care, pet insurance can put you in a better position to make decisions about your pet’s medical needs without putting cost first. With advances in the veterinary profession, there are more medical options available for treatment of accidents and illnesses, but it does come at a cost. Additionally, pet owners have higher expectations for their pet’s health care and standard of living. The key is for pets to receive treatment early and for owners to have the financial means to cover the cost of care. When shopping for pet insurance, get a quote from a few reputable providers to compare the coverage options available to you. Not all pet insurance companies are the same and there are many different types of coverage and coverage options, so read the fine print and ask many questions to be able to make an accurate comparison. To select the plan that's right for you, consider: Your pet’s species – Both cats and dogs need regular veterinary care and can develop medical issues or have accidents. Consider that some species or breeds also live longer than others requiring a different level of commitment and different types of coverage. Your pet’s breed – There may be medical conditions associated with your pet’s breed. Knowing this can help you prepare for future medical needs. When evaluating pet insurance plans, ask each company if they make exclusions based on breed. Pre-existing medical conditions may also make some pets ineligible for some insurance plans. However there are many plans that cover pets with current medical conditions. Your financial resources – Your ability to proactively set aside funds for care related to illnesses and unexpected medical situations should also be considered. Ask each insurer what coverage limits exist, if any. Some insurers may have annual limits, limits for specific treatments or lifetime limits. Remember, the more comprehensive the coverage and the higher the benefits, the higher your associated premium will be.

p. 14

Your pet’s age - As your pet ages, the premiums, deductibles and policy co-pays may also increase because, like humans, the risk of illness increases. However, the impact of your pet’s age on the cost of coverage varies across pet insurance providers and plans. Your ability to pay for routine vet care – Consider the financial requirements to pay for the routine care your pet will need. Consider any previous medical issues your pet might have that may require ongoing care. Some insurance plans offer wellness plans that help manage the costs associated with routine care. Shop around for the policy that best meets your needs. Obtain quotes from a few reputable providers and compare types and levels of coverage. Always read the fine print for details of the benefits and exclusions of the policy. Remember, your veterinarian is an ethical professional who may be able to help you understand the pros and cons of pet insurance coverage and the costs of veterinary medical care today. Your veterinarian has the same goal as you – to provide the best medical care for your pet. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

ALBANY DOCTOR HELPS PATIENT WITH DOWAGER’S HUMP!

Hey Folks, meet Lisa! Lisa is a cyclist in the Capital Region, a member of the local color guard, and she enjoys gardening. She works part time at a local sewing shop and also owns her own business, Clear Spaces Organizing, where she helps families declutter their homes and teaches them the skills that they need to keep their homes that way. Lisa has been suffering with unexplained neck pain which radiates into both arms with frequent numbness and tingling. She knew that something had to change when these symptoms started to interfere with her job(s) as well as her personal life. Lisa sought care at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic where Dr. Jessica Kinkaid was able to identify the Dowager’s Hump and help her take care of it.

Dr. Jessica Kinkaid took the time to get to know Lisa. It appears that a lot of her hobbies such as sewing, cycling, twirling a baton in the marching band, organizing, and gardening require her shoulders to be rolled forward and/or her head to be down. Over time, these repetitive movements have created a Dowager’s Hump in between her lower neck and upper back. Both Dr. Kinkaid and Dr. Seaver have worked with Lisa, discussing the importance of good posture, stretching, strengthening and consistent chiropractic care. Since beginning care, the appearance of her Dowager’s hump is notably reduced. As the hump reduces in size, Lisa’s symptoms of neck pain into the arms with frequent numbness continue to reduce.

At Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, there are two providers, Dr. Jessica Kinkaid and Dr. Ashley Seaver. Both of our providers have a specialty in prenatal and postpartum care. A Dowager’s hump is a very common finding, postpartum. Frequently holding a newborn baby, nursing, and falling asleep in the recliner are all things that cause rounding of the shoulders and a head down position, which seems to very quickly create the hump. Both of our providers have helped many patients with Dowager’s Humps and the associated symptoms! Lisa is very happy with her results, and is hopeful that this article will inspire others to seek help at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Fellow Readers… As you read this I am probably with my family on Sebec Lake in north central Maine; breathing in the fresh balsam scented air, relaxing on the deck overseeing the crystal waters of the lake. Hummingbirds & dragonflies may be dancing overhead as Seamus, my husband & family reconnect & refresh in this incredible place. Sebec is about 3 hours from the "ocean destinations" and in the center of the state. The lake flows 11 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest point. A large portion of the northern shore is undeveloped and only accessible by boat. It is thru the graciousness of my sister-in-law, Ann that we have the time on Sebec each year. This year we opened the camp in May and return, perhaps to close it up for the season. The summer season comes to a close up there with the Piscataquis County Fair in the town of Dover-Foxcroft, just 5 miles from the lake's shore. The Monday following that, school starts, and the lake, a mecca for kayak, canoe, pontoon, motorboats & sailboat, become eerily still . This is when I love to swim in our cove the best! The cool, still water is often occupied by just me, under Seamus' watchful eye. At night, the lone loon calls out, fewer camps on the other shore have lights on and the night sky is full beyond anything one can see near a city, often sprinkled with meteorite showers. The evening air wafts with the sweet smell of campfire smoke as I cuddle up on the screen porch with my next "read". This year I am bringing 6 novels, with hopes to make it thru most of them. I have the next in the Scotland Yard Mysteries by Alex Grecian. I can't wait to read the sequel, "On the Bright Side: The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen age 85" my next Stephen King, "Sleeping Beauties", the next in the "Alienist" series by Caleb Carr along with a few others. I have packed a few games including Mille Bornes (in French) card game donated to my granddaughter by bookshop friend Jan, coloring books and French paper dolls! Maine is my place to also create incredible meals made with just picked farmstand produce, eat lobster (which is brought in daily from the shore 2 hours away) support the local shops with purchases of homemade bread, chicken pie, cookies, homemade ice cream, fresh fruit pies and whoopee pies! Can't wait to check out the new bakery in town and the farm to table shop that just opened. We visit the cemeteries while we recall memories of relatives now at peace under a cedar tree or burning bush. The tiny town church reminds me of the fellowship of townies & the vacationers who boost the small town economy. When I return to the shop it, school will have already resumed! Just a reminder to all teachers: all

teachers qualify for a 10% discount card to shop at Tattered Pages for books for their classroom! Also,

the new Teacher’s Host Week will start in September & continue all year. Any teacher, group of teachers, or school that would like to participate please see me (Trish) at the shop. If you host a week, all sales made in the shop where p. 22

the customer mentions your name will be tallied at the end of the week and you will receive a Tattered Pages Gift Certificate worth 10% of the total week’s amount! That can be used to purchase books, DVDs, toys, greeting cards in the shop! (So $250.00 in total sales where your name was mentioned would earn you a $25 gift certificate that you can spend for your classroom or yourself!) Also, just a reminder, that I gladly donate to our local schools, programs and charitable events throughout the year with boxes of next to new books and gift certificates. Eagle Elementary has already approached me for books for their silent auction. I often donate books with approximate value of $250+, so contact me if you wish to have me donate to your upcoming event! The shop hours will remain in September; M 10-3, T,W 10-5, Th, Fri 10-6 and Sat. 10-2 I hope that Seamus & I can depend on seeing you once we return. Remember I get “new” inventory daily, will put books on reserve for you, and many of our books, DVDs & toys are new or next to new and reduced 20-60% off original price. Until next month…happy reading!
