FINANCIAL FOCU$ Can You Count on a Bountiful Investment “Harvest”?

We’re officially in autumn – the season when we bring in what we planted in the spring. But the concept of planting and gathering isn’t confined to agriculture. In fact, it can be used in many walks of life, including investing. So what can you do to help work toward a successful investment “harvest”? Here is (not quite) a bushel of ideas: Plant the right “seeds.” When farmers plant specific crops, they know about what to expect – how long it will take for them to grow, how much yield they’ll produce, and so on. When you invest, you too need to plant “seeds” by choosing investments that are designed to help meet your goals. For example, to accumulate enough money for a comfortable retirement, you will probably need to own a reasonable percentage of growthoriented vehicles, such as stocks – you generally can’t expect the type of growth you need by investing solely in fixed-income investments, such as bonds and certificates of deposit.

Nurture your “crops.” Agricultural workers are diligent about cultivating their crops through proper irrigation, fertilization and weed control. And if you want to keep your investment portfolio healthy, you also must find ways to nurture it. First of all, you will need to keep adding new dollars regularly, because the larger your overall investment base, the more you can expand its growth potential. But you might also need to do some “weeding” of your own, because over the years, you may have purchased some investments that, for one reason or another, are now no longer suitable for your needs. If that’s the case, you might be better off by selling these investments and using the proceeds for new ones that could fill gaps in your portfolio. Diversify. Farmers may plant a mix of crops: corn, soybeans, flax, legumes, fruits, and so on. Consequently, if one crop fails, it won’t sink the farmer’s entire business. As an investor, you, too, need to diversify, because if you only own one type of asset class, and a financial downturn hits that asset, your portfolio can take a big hit. But spreading your dollars among stocks, bonds, cash and other investments can help reduce the impact of market

with Jerry Pittz

volatility on your holdings. (However, diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Thus far, we’ve looked at ideas on how you can create a healthy investment crop. But once it’s time to actually start harvesting your portfolio – that is, once you begin liquidating parts of it to support yourself during your retirement years – you also need to act carefully. Specifically, you need to establish a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation, based on your age, lifestyle, income sources and other factors. You could be retired for two or three decades, so it’s essential you don’t withdraw so much during your early years of retirement that you risk outliving your money. A financial professional can help you determine the rate that’s right for you. The agricultural harvest season only lasts a few weeks. But doing a good job of growing and managing your investment crop can help you reap the rewards far into the future. Fall colors are beginning to touch the trees, which means that leaf season will soon be upon us. And with falling leaves comes curbside leaf collection. While it seems like a simple task, vacuuming leaves from 186 miles of town roads is a huge David VanLuven job. If we were to put all the Bethlehem Town Supervisor leaves the Town collects each fall into a single line, the pile would stretch from Delmar to Syracuse. And then to Buffalo. And then on to Cleveland, Indianapolis, and St Louis. That’s about a 1,000 miles of leaves collected in Bethlehem each fall.

To execute this monumental task, the Highway Department deploys 4-9 crews of three, 5-6 days per week, through November. Sometimes the weather stays dry and collection is suffocating (with all the leaf dust) but relatively fast. Sometimes rain arrives and slows collection to a back breaking crawl. And sometimes we get an early snow that freezes the piles solid.

Our Highway crews work hard to deliver this regular service. In Albany County, Guilderland is the only other municipality to provide curbside leaf vacuuming, and there only twice for selected streets each fall. Bethlehem truly does deliver – and collect – more for your tax dollar.

Buenau’s Opticians: A Four Generation Family Business By Susan E. Leath

In 1977 Michael Buenau opened the Delmar branch of Buenau’s Opticians in 500 square feet at the front of 228 Delaware Avenue, the former site of Dan-Dee Donuts. His grandfather, J. Peter Buenau started the family business at 71 Central Avenue in Albany in 1915. While the greater history of Buenau’s Opticians is an Albany, and even Capital District story, it has been a pleasure to discover Buenau family Bethlehem connections in the 1860s. COVER PHOTO: J. Peter Buenau with his daughter Catherine in the examining chair. But first, a little about the founder of the business. J. Peter Buenau received his certificate to practice optometry from the University of the State of New York on April 3, 1909. The 1910 U.S. Census lists his occupation as jeweler on his “own account.” This perfectly fits with family knowledge that says he did both optical work and jewelry sales at that time.

Harold Buenau (second from right) with his army friends during World War II.

Family lore also says he dropped the jewelry line because it was too frivolous based on his moral code. Which fits as well. J. Peter was an ordained minister who established God’s Tabernacle church in 1925. He led that church until 1942 when it became part of the Church of the Nazarene and a new minister took over. J. Peter Buenau advertised extensively in the Albany Times Union in 1916. Here is part of one ad that gives a glimpse of early 20th century city life: Mr. Buenau is within easy reach of all by Central avenue trolley lines and he is ever ready to handle the most delicate work. His many years of experience has placed him among the best optometrists in the city. By the 1940s he was advertising J. Peter Buenau & Sons, still at 71 Central Avenue. “A thorough examination by a competent optometrist such as this concern is an assurance for good eyesight and good vision. Better sight means better health.” One of the sons was Harold P. Buenau who received his license to practice optometry in October of 1940. Harold is Michael Buenau’s father. Through the years, Buenau’s Opticians has grown and changed with the times, seeking new business opportunities with a new people and new sociodemographics to serve. At one time there were five locations: Central Avenue and Madison Avenue in Albany, the Empire State Plaza, Guilderland and Delmar. Little by little, the company began to concentrate on the Delmar location. Today Michael’s son Jeffrey works with his father, carrying on the family business in a large, modern, light filled space with an expansive staff of optometrists and opticians to serve the needs of their clients. But what about that 1860s connection to Bethlehem?

Michael Buenau circa 1974 in front of the Central Avenue store. p. 12

First you need to know that the area of Second Avenue in Albany was part of the town of Bethlehem from the town’s establishment in 1793 until it was

matches with the George Beno of the 1860 census, making him a resident of Bethlehem and the likely great-great grand uncle of Michael Buenau. Bringing us full circle to the beginning of this article. And finally, a few remarks about spelling. Buenau is pronounced the German way with a long e and long o. That leads to many different spellings over the years in the older records like the census, especially when information is written down by someone with an English ear. Also, there are many women named Catherine and Katherine in the family. “Catherine with a C” was a favorite way for the family to delineate who was who. Again, in the old records, both the C and K versions are used interchangeably. Both of these issues make research a fun challenge. J. Peter and Catherine Buenau around the time of their 52nd wedding anniversary celebrated in 1954. A newspaper article from the time describes their celebration as well as Rev. Buenau’s continued devotion to mission work and visits to the Home for the Aged.

annexed into Albany in 1870. Second you need to know that J. Peter Buenau’s parents are Peter Buenau (1839 to 1905) and Catherine Pflantz (1848 to 1906). In the 1880 U.S. Census Peter and Catherine are living at 62 Second Avenue with their 6 children who include five-year-old J. Peter. Peter was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Catherine’s parents were born in Prussia. Peter is a moulder, age 41. Going further back to the 1860 census, we have another Catherine “Beno,” age 60, and her two sons, Peter (age 22 and a moulder) and George (age 19 and also a moulder) living in Bethlehem. All were born in Germany and the dates, occupation, and residence match up with the Peter who married Catherine Pflantz.

Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian and the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York. Susan welcomes suggestions for Then and Now articles. She can be reached at sleath@townofbethlehem.org

BethlehemNYHistory.blogspot.com

Knowing that many men of German heritage from the Second Avenue area enlisted during the Civil War, a look at Bethlehem enlistment records turns up George Beno, son of Gotlieb and Catherine Beno who was born in 1841 in Germany. He served with the 177th New York Infantry and his name is found in company records spelled both as Bienau and Bienan. This

Ask the

Canterbury Vet National Pet Obesity Awareness Day It’s time to start thinking about the health of our pets in regards to obesity. October 10th has been set aside as National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Obesity in our pets is at an all-time high. Over half of our dogs and cats are overweight. Added weight can cause a multitude of problems both medically and physically. It’s time to take charge of our pet’s weight. We as pet owners are the ones responsible for our pet’s obesity; but we are also the ones who can help manage our pet’s obesity problems and take care of our beloved family members. Many people think fat cats and pudgy pups are cute, but consider this: Overweight pets don’t feel well. Overweight pets often appear tired or lazy, lack energy and playfulness, are reluctant to jump or run, have difficulty grooming themselves, lag behind on walks and pant heavily. In addition, the extra weight puts stress on their joints, hearts, lungs, liver, kidneys and more. Overweight pets need more veterinary care. Overweight pets are at higher risk for a variety of health problems, including diabetes mellitus, heart disease and high blood pressure, immune suppression, orthopedic and arthritic disorders, skin infections and cancer. These issues can greatly increase the amount of care the pet will need as a result of his or her weight. There have been well documented studies proving that overweight pets do not live as long as their lean fed counterparts. On average, normal body weight dogs live up to two and a half years longer than overweight canines. We would all want our pets to live two and a half years longer if they could. Weight loss is the answer to these problems. Weight loss decreases the stress on joints (especially important for pets with arthritis), decreases risk factors for anesthetic and surgical procedures, improves cardiovascular function, enhances athleticism and can reduce or eliminate the need for certain medications required to manage medical disorders. In addition, it can help you spend less time and money at the vet! Could your pet stand to shed a few pounds? Help him or her slim down with these tips: *Measure your pet’s food. How much food do you feed your pet? A handful? A scoop? Something in between? What is the actual volume of food your pet is fed? Measuring your pet’s food allows you to keep track of exactly how much your dog or cat is eating and manage his or her caloric intake. *Avoid free feeding. Free feeding, or having food available at all times, can encourage overeating. To p. 14

prevent this, feed your pet set meals instead. This means your pet is only fed a measured amount of food at specific times of the day. *Give treats sparingly. Treats are just that – a special treat. *Exercise your pet. Physical and mental stimulation are vital to keeping your pet happy and healthy. Take your dog for walks every day and play with your cat daily. Think of how fun it can be to start an exercise routine with your pet. Talk with friends and neighbors about going on walks or hikes with them and their pets. *Most importantly, see your veterinarian. Many pet owners are shocked to learn what an ideal body weight for a cat or dog actually looks like. A veterinarian can help you assess your pet’s weight correctly and develop a plan of action to get your pet to their ideal body condition. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Hey friends, I’m Dr. Alicia Mahler. I am a Doctor of Psychology and the owner of Freedom First Psychological Services, PLLC in Latham, NY. I am currently 39 weeks pregnant with my second son and boy (pun intended) has my second pregnancy been tough! I began experiencing difficulty with SPD (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction) when I was only 8 weeks pregnant. I had severe sharp, stabbing pain on both sides of my groin. I was having trouble with many daily movements such as walking, sleeping, getting up and down from the floor, and sitting; and it was only the first trimester! I was worried about how much pain I would be in for the rest of my pregnancy and how this would impact by ability to both work and enjoy my time with my first son before the new baby arrived. I confided in my midwife, Kelly McDermott, from Sage Femme Midwifery who referred me to a trusted Chiropractic office, Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, whom they work very closely with. I began care at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I was worried that the Chiropractic adjustment would hurt, but I figured that it couldn’t be worse than the amount of pain that I was already in each day. To my surprise, the adjustment actually did not hurt and it gave me tremendous relief instantaneously that I was beyond grateful for. There are two Chiropractors in the practice, Dr. Jessica Kinkaid and Dr. Ashley Busse. Both of the Doctors took excellent care of me and made me feel like part of the family. Not only did Chiropractic care keep my pain down to a minimum, it also allowed me to continue working up until the very end of my pregnancy. Once my pain level was decreased, I thought the rest of my pregnancy would be a smooth ride. However, at 34 weeks my baby was still breech. That was concerning considering I planned to deliver my baby via homebirth. The Doctors at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic made it clear that they cannot claim that Chiropractic can flip a baby, but they taught me about the Webster technique and how it balances the muscles and ligaments surrounding the pelvis, which gives the baby the most room possible to flip on its own. At my next prenatal appointment, shortly after my last Chiropractic adjustment, we found that the baby had turned into the head down position!

Most importantly, Chiropractic care gave me the opportunity to cherish the last few months that I had left with my first born son before baby brother arrived. It could be any day now and with my solid prenatal team, I feel ready.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, October is upon us with its brisk mornings, dew sparkling on the grass, brilliant sunsets and the changing colors of the leaves; as the world around us bursts into the colors of the harvest. Children are into their school routine, apples & pumpkin invade our decorating scheme, our coffee & our desserts! Bathing suits are replaced by sweaters & fleece and the many different afhgans emerge as I fight putting the heat on in the house. My strolls with Seamus are enhanced by the decor of mums, pumpkins, corn stalks and straw bales that align the porches and walkways in my Glenmont neighborhood! My marigolds & zinnia weathered the summer (and the bunnies and deer) and are at their peak! I love October! I will be married 42 years (married during the bicentennial on the day after my parent's wedding anniversary 1950, and on the day of my maternal grandparent's wedding day in 1929). My paternal grandmother, Clara was born in October as are some of my favorite people in my life, my sister-in-law Annie (who owns the lakehouse on Sebec Lake), my oldest grandson Connor & youngest granddaughter Raven. It is truly a transitional month. Who can predict the weather anymore? But, I do know that a trip to an apple orchard will be forthcoming. "Crisp" is a fine word to describe so many aspects of October. I am soooo over humidity! Hopefully the door on the shop will be wide open every day in October! I realize that many of you will be turning to the new television season...but, as I, perhaps DVR-ing it so that you can still get in time with a few good books! I am currently engrossed in the 4th in the Scotland Murder Squad by Alex Grecian, and I have to admit that I have made "couch time" with Seamus most afternoons to get in a chapter or two. I love this series and am disappointed that this is the last book, as of this time, so I am lovingly reading each word. I love how Grecian has set the scene in England in the late 1800s following the serial killer Jack the Ripper and the embarassment that followed the police in not solving the case. The restructured "murder squad" includes a Commisioner, head detective, constable, forensic doctor and his teenage daughter who is a phenom sketch artist. Watching them come together to form the squad is entertaining, informative and illuminating about the original CSI's and detective skills evolving in the gritty society of Victorian England! The imagery, much like Caleb Carr's "Alienist" series provides a vivid recount of early detective implementation of forensics as the integration of women into this field emerges! Another book which I highly recommend, and those who follow my writings probably see this one coming...the next book in the Hendrik Groen series! "On the Bright Side" follows our hero at age 85 and his escapades with the "Old But Not Dead Yet" club! With his irascible behavior, wit and sarcasm, Hendrick continues a diary of his day to day life in the retirement community in Amsterdam. As I continue to reflect upon and miss my Darlin' Dad who passed away in January at 89, I perhaps related to this book on a more personal level. I only hope that I have 1/10 his optimistic attitude toward friendship, community and living life to its p. 22

fullest! One passage had me laughing myself silly when Hendrik, while on a scooter ride in the country with his friend, veers off the road when a duck flies in front of him. He is deeply submerged in mud, and he, in his Sunday best shoes, cannot get himself out of the mud. At the mercy of a farmer, who wonders why they would drive out a country road so ill prepared for nature, Hendrik rides back to the retirement home caked in mud to his mid-calf. Last year the shop had a very successful sale on all books in the Horror section, to the point that I have never recovered the loss of my Stephen King! So, if you have Stephen King in hardcover or paperback, bring it in, please! I will be having a 20% off sale on all books in Horror, including paranormal/urban fantasy books throughout the month of October! Just a reminder that I do not buy books! I don't accept large donations of books at one time. Books must be in re-sellable condition, no odor please. I will look at up to 6 books at a time for trade credit. Trade credits work like a coupon and take an additional 20% off book purchases. Customers receive a free book (from a special selection) for every $20 spent! What a great way to experience a new author, or find a book to give a friend! I will do research for you if you call for a specific title. I do order books for customers for a small fee. I do sell gift certificates. I do make donations for charities and not for profit organizations with boxes of next to new books. With thousands of books in the shop, all reduced in price from 20-60% off, many in next to new condition, if you haven't come in, why not make October your month to discover us! You can check us out on Facebook at Tattered Pages, LLC. I appreciate your patronage. Tattered Pages will actually be celebrating its 12th Anniversary on Saturday, October 6th! Why not come in and help us celebrate? My granddaughter Trinity will be here and we will be featuring a "secret discount" at the counter at the time of purchase! Until next month...remember that reading is the most affordable getaway around!
