FINANCIAL FOCU$ Share Your Financial Abundance with Your Family! Thanksgiving is almost here. Ideally, this holiday should be about more than turkey, football, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. After all, the idea behind Thanksgiving is to share what we have with our loved ones. But if you want your family to take part in your abundance, you will want to look beyond one day in November. To help ensure you leave the type of legacy you desire, you will need to follow a detailed plan of action, including these steps: Review your estate plans. If you haven’t done so already, take this opportunity to review your plans for managing your estate – and if you haven’t yet drawn them up, it’s never too soon to start. You may want to work with a legal professional to create a will, living trust and other documents essential to your plan. Preserve your financial independence. If your financial independence were to be jeopardized, your adult children might be forced to use their own resources to help support you – an outcome you obviously would never want. How can you protect yourself and your financial assets? For one thing, it’s a good idea to work with your legal professional to create a power of attorney, which would enable someone – possibly a grown child – to make financial decisions for you, should you become incapacitated. Also, you may want to guard yourself against the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. Consider this: The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $97,000, according to a survey by the insurance company

with Jerry Pittz

Genworth. Furthermore, Medicare typically pays very little for these expenses. Consequently, you may want to consider protecting yourself in advance by purchasing long-term care insurance or permanent life insurance with a long-term care provision. A financial professional can help you evaluate your options and recommend which ones might be appropriate for your needs. Share your wishes with your family. It can take some time to put your plans in place – and, even then, you may need to make changes periodically, based on altered circumstances in your life, such as changes in your marital status, new family members, new property, etc. In any case, as your estate- and legacybased plans evolve, you’ll want to communicate them to your family – because, by doing so, you can help spare them some potentially unpleasant surprises when it’s time to settle your estate. Also, by making your wishes known to your family far ahead of when any action needs to be taken, you’ll help prepare the right people for the roles you wish them to assume – power of attorney, executor of your estate, and so on. You’ll also want to acquaint your family with the legal, tax and financial professionals you’ve selected to work on your estate and legacy plans. By introducing these professionals early on, you can provide your family members with a greater degree of confidence in the overall estate-planning process. Thanksgiving goes by in a blur. But by taking the steps described above, along with others, you can demonstrate the spirit of sharing with your family for years – and possibly generations – to come. Bethlehem

Dear Neighbor, Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund has been to provide temporary financial assistance to Bethlehem Town residents who face emergency needs not covered by other agencies or sources. Formerly known as the Bethlehem Festival Fund, our nonprofit treats all requests with confidentiality. Bethlehem School District personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services and other service providers make most of the requests for assistance.

Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942

Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a long-standing tradition of the Bethlehem Community Fund.

Funds are used to help individuals, families and students with short-term needs such as medical expenses, utility bills, auto/home repairs, school-related expenses and other costs that arise from unforeseen hardships. The Fund has experienced an increase in requests this year and we anticipate a record number of individuals and families needing assistance this winter. Our 2018 Holiday fundraising goal of $30,000 will make it possible for us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors throughout the upcoming year.

Your gift will touch the lives of our neighbors in the Bethlehem community. Warmest regards, Board of Trustees and Officers Bethlehem Community Fund President: Paul Gutman, 518-655-0106 V President: John Guastella, 518-598-3434

Then

& Now

Two True Crime Stories from 18th and 19th Century Bethlehem By Susan E. Leath

Some Bethlehem stories just beg to be retold, especially if you enjoy True Crime or an episode of C.S.I. Below are two murder stories from long ago, that of Mr. Flansburg and Maria Hendrickson. The book Landmarks of Albany County (published in 1897 by Amasa Parker) goes on at great length about Albany history, including the Town of Bethlehem. Part II Biographies, contains biographical sketches of prominent men (including Bethlehem’s own John I. Slingerland). Then comes Part III Family Sketches, pages and pages of local family trivia. Enjoyable reading, until this jarring paragraph leaps out. “The second great-grandfather and the parent tree of the family of Flansburg in America, was a native of Holland and settled in Bethlehem. He was a farmer and was murdered for his money by the tax collector, Schoonmaker, who seeing Mr. Flansburg had money, returned in the night with an accomplice and asked for cider; while Mrs. Flansburg was in the cellar after the cider, with an ax, he killed Mr. Flansburg, secured the money and fled. He was apprehended, tried and executed.” These few sentences raise many questions for which there are very, very few answers. Simply identifying the players is difficult. The paragraph is found in a section about Alexander Flansburg (born in 1846, died in 1929). It is also

referred to again in the section about Rufus Flansburg, a cousin of Alexander. Alexander’s grandfather, John P., was born in Bethlehem in 1784. Alexander’s great-grandfather Jacob is described as “a native of Holland and [who] spent his active life in the town of Bethlehem as a farmer.” Alexander’s “second great-grandfather” is only identified as Mr. Flansburg. From reading the entry, reconstructing the family tree therein and making some educated guesses about birth years, it appears the murder took place in the late 1700s, before Bethlehem was even officially a town (it was erected from Watervliet in 1793). The 1790 census has four Flansburgs, Daniel, David, Peter and William. The baptismal records of the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem provides another glimpse. John Flansburg and Catherine Becker had their daughter Maria baptized in 1795, Peter Flansburg and Franky Bogart’s daughter Maria was baptized in 1799 and Andreas Flansburg and Eva Brown’s son Matthew was baptized in 1799. Looking at it from the Schoonmaker perspective, there are several of them in the records of the First Reformed Church as well, including Peter who with his wife Neltie VanderLinde had their son Jacobus baptized in 1798. There are plenty of Schoonmakers throughout the history of Bethlehem, but again no indication of the first name of the murderous Mr. Schoonmaker. So, we can confirm that there were plenty of Flansburgs and Schoonmakers living in the Bethlehem area in late 1700s. And that is all this writer is able to pin down as of this writing. Many questions remain. I especially wonder about poor Mrs. Flansburg coming up from the cellar, a cool jug of cider in hand, only to discover her husband’s murdered body. In contrast, the murder by poison of Maria Van Deusen

These images of Maria and John Hendrickson appear in the book The Trial of John Hendrickson, Jr., for the murder of his wife Maria. p. 12

A portion of Gould’s 1854 map of Albany County showing the Hendrickson home in the center. To the right, near the word PLANK, is the modern day, four way stop at Feura Bush Road and Elm Avenue. In the 1850s Feura Bush Road was part of the Clarksville and Albany Plank Road. View the complete map at the Library of Congress digital collection website.

Hendrickson is very well documented. The title of one source gives away the basic story: Trial of John Hendrickson, Jr., for the murder of his wife Maria, by poisoning: at Bethlehem, Albany County, N.Y., March 6th, 1853: tried in the court of Oyer and Terminer, at Albany, N.Y., in June and July, 1853. This book details the trial, one of the first in the U.S. to use what we think of today as forensic science. District Attorney Andrew J. Colvin lays out the prosecution in three areas of evidence: moral, medical, and chemical. Attorney for the defense Henry G. Wheaton is equally thorough in his rebuttal. The moral evidence reads like a best seller crime novel including a young couple with a troubled marriage, a philandering husband and a depressed wife. The medical and chemical evidence reads like an episode of CSI including graphic descriptions of internal organs and evidence about aconite poisoning. Throughout the book, folks with recognizable Bethlehem last names are called to testify including Mead, Haswell, Slingerland, Winne, VanWie, Swinburn, Sprinsteed, Salisbury, and Houghtailing. Maria Van Deusen, youngest of Lawrence Van Deusen and Susanna Hungerford’s seven children, married John Hendrickson, Jr when she was 17 years old and he was 19. She would be dead at his hand two years later. Her parents objected to the marriage based on Hendrickson’s character. At 19, he already had a reputation for rowdy behavior and having led a life of idleness. Gould’s 1854 map of Albany County clearly delineates where the action on the night of murder took place. Imagine today’s Mead’s Lane, a rural stretch of road between Delaware Avenue and Route 32. In the middle is the home of John Hendrickson, father of John Jr, where the murder took place on the night of Sunday, March 6. After their marriage in January 1851, the couple lived with Maria’s parents for a while until John’s bad behavior (including an assault on a young woman who lived in the Van Deusen’s village of Clarksville and infidelity that led to Maria contracting an STD) caused their separation. In late February of 1853, they had reconciled and were living with John’s parents.

Just north of the Hendricksons are the farms of the Mead and Oliver families. These neighbors were called after John Hendrickson woke to find his wife’s dead body next to him in bed. Members of the Hendrickson family in the residence tried to revive Maria, and John’s brother Matthew went to the Meads for help and assistance. Jerimiah Mead testified that Matthew called for his wife Lucy about three o’clock in the morning having arrived in a one-horse sleigh. Wendell Oliver also testified at the trial about his activities that night. He said that he had seen John Hendrickson at Snyder’s tavern earlier in the evening and passed by the Hendrickson house on his way home from William Haswell’s. The remains of Snyder’s hotel until fairly recently stood on today’s Henry Drive near Waldenmaier Road. William Haswell’s place was at the corner of today’s Elm Avenue and Feura Bush Road. Both can be seen on the 1854 map. John Hendrickson, Jr.’s trial became a sensation in Bethlehem, Albany and beyond. While prosecutors laid out circumstantial evidence documenting the night and Hendrickson actions, their main case relied on the medial and forensic evidence provided by Drs. Salisbury and Swinburne. Aconite poisoning was determined to be the cause and despite the hard work of the Defense, Hendrickson was convicted. After the conviction, the newspapers were awash in letters to the editor from physicians disputing the chemical testimony. One was careful to say, “I can find nothing which goes to prove that the accused committed a murder through agency of poison.” An application for pardon “founded upon Letters from distinguished Chemists and Physicians, designed to rebut the Testimony of doctors Swinburne and Salisbury” was sent to the Governor of New York. A notice in the Albany Evening Journal April 29, 1854 concludes with “No capital conviction among us was ever more in conformity with public sentiment than this of Hendrickson.” Public sentiment did prevail, and Hendrickson was executed on the morning of May 5, 1854 at the Albany County jail. An estimated crowd of 2,000 to 3,000 attended. Hendrickson is said to have protested his innocence to the end. Want to read more? Both books, Land Marks of Albany County and The Trial of John Hendrickson, Jr., for the murder of his wife Maria are available at the website archive.org.

Canterbury Vet National Adopt a Senior Pet Month Many people walk into a shelter or search a rescue’s website hoping to adopt a new puppy or kitten, completely overlooking the perfectly adoptable older dogs and cats in their search. During National Adopt a Senior Pet Month, which runs the month of November, shelters and rescues across the country are hoping people looking to adopt a new furry friend will consider adding a senior pet to their family. The most difficult group of homeless pets to place are older dogs and cats. Senior pets tend to spend the longest amount of time at a shelter or rescue before finding their forever home. There are plenty of benefits to selecting an older pet over a younger one. Because senior pets are typically calmer and may require less exercise than puppies and kittens, it may easier to teach them new tricks. In fact, many senior pets are already pros at performing basic commands. Their low-key natures can also make them ideal for households with children. What some adopters of younger pets are unprepared for is what hard work it can be to housetrain a new puppy or kitten. Older pets have often come to the shelter after years of living in a home, so they are usually already housetrained, saving you some stress. Understanding the personality of an animal is key to finding the perfect match for your family and for that homeless pet. While young puppies and kittens are still developing their personalities, you’ll know right away whether a senior dog is a snuggle-bug or a senior cat is more of an independent spirit. Adopting a senior pet takes the guess work out of how big a dog will get, what the kitten’s personality will be like when it grows up, or how much energy that puppy will have as an adult. Don’t believe the old wives’ tale about “old dogs can’t learn new tricks.” Senior dogs can actually be more focused and obedient, and can pick up on what you teach them faster than a hyperactive pup. Adopters who add a senior pet to the family often get an entirely different level of satisfaction from the adoption experience. You are truly saving a life that someone else turned away. Senior pets have so much love and compassion still to share, and make the most amazing companions. Bringing an older pet home from the shelter or rescue can have its own unique challenges. Sometimes, because the pet is at an advanced age, there can be some extra health issues to consider. Like all pets, senior animals need regular vet care to insure that they keep their good health, and may need additional dental care and preventative vet care like blood work. p. 14

Depending on breed, lifestyle, and existing health issues, a senior dog or cat can have plenty of healthy and happy years to give as your loving companion. If you are interested in adopting a senior pet and have more questions, ask your veterinarian and then head to your local shelter and give a senior pet a loving home.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, I have quoted before: “525,600 minutes…how do you measure a year in the life? In daylights, in sunsets, midnights, in cups of coffee…in inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife. 526,500 minutes; how do you measure a year in the life?” lyrics from the theme song for the musical, “Rent”. I have taken to reflecting about this year, especially during the time when I am alone with Seamus in the shop. Sales often drop off during this time of year. I lose many of my beloved customers as they head south for the winter; this impacts sales of course, which causes some anxiety each time the rent is due! In all honesty, this year has given me cause to reflect upon my life, my family, my future. I love owning Tattered Pages and especially the role that it has taken in our wonderful community. Giving donations for fundraisers, meeting with my small business network group, meeting and sharing time in the cozy corner visiting are some of the highlights of my job. When rent goes up and sales are down, I have to be realistic about my future. So many thank me for being here, but I can't do this without your help. If you would tell others about my shop, come in to purchase in planning birthdays, holidays and gift giving times, I might see that increase that I need to fill the hole made by my "snowbirds". Books can always be the center of that special gift basket or gift bag. Do you know someone who might love a few Romance novels and a tea mug, filled with tea bags and a candle or a sports book with sports towel, gloves, socks? Mystery readers might like a few chilling stories and an afghan. Cooks in your family may like a cookbook, utensils or ingredients. I would love olive oil, pasta, cheese, potholders and a cookbook! Remember, I also sell gift certificates which make great gifts for those in your family who love to read. November is the month of the small business... and SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY is November 24, 2018! The shop will be open 10-3 that day and will be offering an additional 15% off all book sales in the shop. I will be giving away special canvas Support Small Business bags for any sale over $30 starting on November 1st until they are gone. These were provided by American Express for Small Business and are great for all kinds of shopping, especially for books! Mark your calendar that our special Jewelry Extravaganza featuring designs by Dana (featured crafter at the Delmar Farmer's Market) are already planned for Saturdays December 1 and December 15 from 11-4 in the shop. My granddaughter, Trinity, will also be selling gently used toys and items in the shop to raise money for her trip to Quebec with her 7th grade French class. I have had a few people last week looking for books for their loved one who may be struggling with reading, but still want that book on hand. I suggest that I do carry some Large Print books and audio books. A book of short stories or Chicken Soup for the ...... might provide ways to read without having to remember characters, entangled plot etc. You might need to purchase extra reading glasses or a lap magnifier for your reader. I did for my Dad in the past. I found it at a craft store. It helped not only with reading a book, his Bible but also the newspaper. p. 22

We recently received about 3 dozen additions to our classic literature section, including a nice set of hardcover Kipling. Sci-Fi just added paperbacks by Asimov and Piers Anthony. The children's Christmas/Holiday books will be coming out especially since children have been dragging them out since mid-October. Can you blame them? The joy that snow, snowmen, reindeer, cute little Christmas mice, bunnies, kitties, puppies are always enticing to little ones. My latest read is still "Sleeping Beauties" by Stephen & Owen King. I am sharing my "down time" with crocheting gifts, so I have put my bookmark in from time to time. Seamus likes to cuddle under the afghan that I am working on. I hope that you all stay healthy and hope that I can help you connect with just the right books this month. The shop will be closed on Thanksgiving. You can always check to see if I have had to close by calling ahead or checking my Facebook page: Tattered Pages, LLC. I do follow the Bethlehem School snow code for winter. My fall hours are: M. 10-3, T, W 10-5, Th, Fri 10-6, Sat 10-2 (except during special sales) closed Sunday.

It’s a good idea to time walks earlier in the day before the fireworks start. Keep your dog on-lead if you think fireworks will be let off. Always keep your dog indoors when fireworks are being let off. Switching the TV or radio on might help to muffle the sound, but make sure it’s not too loud and don’t try this if your dog isn’t used to noises from the television. Close the curtains to black out any flashing lights from outside. Dogs are likely to drink more when they are worried, so fill their water bowl up to the brim.

Let your worried dog pace around, whine and hide in a corner if he wants to. Once they have found a safe space try not to disturb them. Dogs may like to hide in a den where they can feel safe and comfortable when loud noises are all around. This could be under your bed or behind the sofa. Placing some of your clothes there might help to keep your pet calm. It goes without saying that you should never shout at your pet. If you have to leave your house during firework season and come home to find your dog has been destructive or toileted, don’t get angry with them. Reprimanding them won’t help and will also make your dog more stressed. OUR TOWNE Bethlehem Dog Owner
