Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, As I write this to you, the door is open on the shop, the sparrows in the locust tree just outside the door are singing their song of summer. One of my little feathered friends has flown into the shop twice this past month. Flying overhead, circling the shop stopping in the mystery, sci-fi, children’s and romance sections as I follow saying, “Ok, Buddy, out you go!” A robin started this off a few weeks back but only flew in, put on the brakes, spun about and flew out. I am greeted daily by the sparrows as Seamus and I go thru our morning procedure. I love it…birds, books, song…a constant reminder of one of the reasons why I love this shop. With the large windows and the door open, it brings me closer to the outside world while I “work”! The nest over the store door has been taken down twice and rebuilt a third time, I have no problem with the nest and I think that the birds recognize that in me as they greet me each morning on a lower branch! Can you believe that half the year is already over? I have come to this conclusion, as I cross more years on my personal timeline: gravity pulls harder on me (I drop my keys more, books fly out of my hands and climbing inclines seem to mess with my balance), my incredible memory now has developed “Swiss cheese moments” with recall, and the weeks just whiz on by! Years are now being measured by the height & age of my grandchildren… and Seamus’ face frosts just a little bit more. As I aforementioned my grandchildren, I have an opportunity to be with all five of them at one time! They range from 5-14 and they have never been altogether! In honor of my Darlin’ Dad, my siblings & I planned an ocean vacation in Ocean City, MD. There will be a total of 28 of us! SO, the shop will be closed from July 4-14! Seamus is even coming! Family is the most important part of my life and the idea of having my sons together with their 9 cousins and my grandchildren together with their 11 cousins is not only incredible but not easy to coordinate! Those, that know me, are aware that I usually bring a bag of books on vacation with me. I will do that when I head to Maine in August (yes, a second vacation is forthcoming) but for this vacation, with so many children, I may only bring two books with me and s ome for my grandchildren for quiet time. If you are getting ready to head off on vacation, or even the pool, I would love to connect you to just the right book! There are over 17,000 currently in the shop (mostly next to new), all reduced between 25-58% off the original prices! If you have a “trade credit account” with the shop, you always receive an additional 20% off your purchases of books. Don’t forget to check with me if your child has a summer reading list. If I don’t have it, I will get it for you at a discount off original price even if it is out of print! I have a few boxes of books, a mix of fiction & non-fiction at the front of the shop all marked down to $5.00 and the little p. 6

basket of $1.00 books, as usual…some great books for your summer reading. No denying that the e-book has impacted the shop financially, but I hold out my hopes for those that still prefer a “real book”. Many are surprised to find out that the average hardcover book ranges from $9.00-$15.00 even if newly published! The most popular “tradecover paperbacks” range between $7-$11. The mass market paperbacks range from $2.99-$7.99! I truly stand behind my motto of “service…selection…value”. If I don’t have what you are looking for, I am always happy to order your book for you, still at a discount. Recently, I ordered a 2 volume set of books for a very special customer. I hunted around and found the set for him for $40 when elsewhere it ran from $80-$170 because it is out of print. Another bookshop in the area said it would be difficult to find. I not only found it within a 5 minute search, I had it to him within the week. While it sat on my counter, a new customer came in and said that he had been looking for those books for years, at an affordable price. I told him that they were reserved for another, he was disappointed, but he also thought that he might be able to get the books for $7.00 a piece, a price that he had paid at a down state flea market 10 years ago! I am always amazed by those that think that just because it is second hand that the price should be less than a $1! I guess they don’t consider that the rent in a “plaza” is going to be a bit more than at a flea market, garage or tag sale! I love my customers who have become like family, and being able to connect them to the books of their desire makes my job intensely satisfying! You can always call me with a title, author and I will look for you… you can also contact me thru Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC. I just had a woman leave my shop who said, when I didn’t have what she was looking for, “I guess I’ll have to go to a real bookstore!” “ouch” I am a “real bookstore”. I just may not have the inventory that you are looking for…but then again, I just might. My inventory is on a database! My recent love of Scandinavian writers continues! I love “The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen” is a Dutch novel: “ Of Hendrik Groen, age 83 ¼! This indomitable curmudgeon (similar to Bachman’s Ove) lives in senior housing in Amsterdam and has no plans to go quietly! Exasperated by the indignities of aging he sets out to write an expose of the recorded antics of the day in his retirement home. With tongue in cheek, he records the daily events in his strive to ward off boredom, he gathers his closest friends to form the “Old But Not Dead Club” and shares the bittersweet tales of life in “state housing”. It is about friendship, optimism, and life on the other end of the timeline! I am savoring every entry and will most likely procure the next tale of Hendrik at 85! I hope that you are enjoying your current read! Summer reading…the most affordable get-away around. Seamus and I can’t wait to see you at: Tattered Pages 365 Feura Bush Rd. Glenmont Center Square 12077. #518-447-9910 Until next month, Happy Reading!

The next time you turn on the tap to wash your dishes or water your flowers, remember that it’s coming to you thanks to public works crews who diligently maintain hundreds of miles of pipes! Water Quick Facts 1,600,000,000 gallons of clean drinking water delivered annually 1,670 fire hydrants in town 229 miles of water pipes in town 12 workers to maintain pipes

ater, like electricity, is something most of us take for granted. We turn on the tap and it’s there for brushing our teeth, watering our lawns, filling our pools, carrying away stuff that isn’t nice to read about, and serving our 1,670 fire hydrants. Public water in Bethlehem comes to our homes and businesses through 229 miles of pipes. Put in a line, these water pipes would stretch from Delmar to Philadelphia. That’s a lot of pipe, and our town crews work hard, every day, to maintain and repair them. In 2017, they fixed 40 breaks. In the first half of 2018, they’ve already repaired 33. Happily, most people weren’t aware of these breaks because town crews usually are able to dig down about 8 feet to expose the breaks, make repairs, and refill the holes in under 4 hours. Many of our water pipes break because they are old. The pipes under Delaware Ave between the Four Corners and Elsmere Ave, for example, were put in just after World War II. We had 3,000 feet of new pipe laid there as part of the road improvement project. Pipes break because of accidents too. In May, for example, the NYS Dept. of Transportation accidently tore a hole in one of the main water lines into town. It was gushing 750 gallons per minute before town crews were able to isolate it, shut it down, and fix it… in under 4 hours.

Cindy’s second major complaint was a 6-month history of chest pain on the left side. She was very worried about the possibility of having a heart attack. She had been to 3 specialists in the past 6 months who couldn’t find anything wrong with her heart, and told her that she would have to live with the pain. Cindy was hesitant to try Chiropractic care but based on the many success stories on Kinkaid Family Chiropractic’s Facebook page, she decided to schedule an appointment at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic.

Cindy’s first major complaint was that she had been suffering from daily migraines. When she got a migraine, she would have to find a dark, quiet room. She also told us that she had to leave work early several times due to the severity of her pain. She was unable to function to her fullest potential, and was having a hard time working and living her life the way she intended.

Hey Folks, meet Cindy! Cindy is a school teacher who found Kinkaid Family Chiropractic through another patients success story. Cindy had two major complaints, severe migraines and chest pain. She tried several different treatments with no luck, so she decided to give chiropractic a try.

Dr. Kinkaid also very quickly identified that the cause of Cindy’s chest pain. This pain was due to a rib head being misaligned. The rib head connects to the sternum and is held in by cartilage. Cartilage has poor blood supply, so if it gets stretched out (often by heavy coughing or a fall), the rib head will become misaligned, which, like in Cindy’s case, can cause symptoms very similar to a heart attack. Cindy is very happy with her results and she is hopeful that this article will inspire someone else to visit Kinkaid Family Chiropractic if they suffer from similar complaints.

After a history and examination, Dr. Jessica Kinkaid was quickly able to identify the problem for both, Cindy’s migraines and her chest pain. After just one visit, Cindy was mostly pain free. Her migraines were caused by a misaligned bone in the upper part of her neck. The bone was rotated in a way that it put pressure on the brain stem, partially blocking blood flow and nerve flow to the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Kinkaid was able to gently adjust Cindy’s neck and put the bone back in the correct position which, in turn, took pressure off of the nerves and arteries, allowing more oxygen to get to the brain and ultimately getting rid of Cindy’s headaches.

A Tale of Two Van Der Heyden Houses By Susan E. Leath

When bicycles were first introduced in the 1800s, and especially when the safety bicycle came along in 1885, one wonders if anyone anticipated the revolution that would follow. John Kemp Starley produced his “Rover” in 1885. With its wheels of similar size (as opposed to the earlier, and unsafe, high wheel or penny farthing bicycle) and chain drive to the rear wheel, the Rover was the first successful safety bicycle. Starley did not patent his design and it was widely copied. Locally, in 1894, George Townsend represented the Monarch Cycle Co, a popular brand of bike that got started two years earlier Chicago. In the July 6, 1894 Altamont Enterprise Townsend notes that he is “prepared to take orders for the very best wheel in the world. They are high grade but sell at going prices.” Bicyclists, or wheelman, soon started getting together and forming clubs to promote their newfangled healthy activity. In 1886 a local paper had this to say about the health benefits of cycling: Cycling is recommended as the most tranquilizing of muscular exercise for men whose nerves are overstrung. The man who goes through ten hours of daily mental fret and worry will in an hour of pleasant road riding in the fresh sweet-scented country throw off all ill effect and prepare himself for another successful day’s brainwork. The Albany Bi Club was established as early as 1880 and the Albany County Wheelmen soon followed. The clubs promoted “century runs” (group rides of over 100

miles – for example in 1897 Henry Nelson and Peter Schumacher received century badges from the Albany County Wheelmen for completing 116 miles while Jeptha Macfarlane and others were denied badges because they only made 98) and other races, improved road conditions and cycle path construction, and safe practices for riders, pedestrians and horse drawn vehicles. The argument has been made that bicycle wheelmen and their organized, countrywide push for improved road surfaces, known as the Good Roads movement, lead directly to the wide spread acceptance of motorized automobiles. Remember at the time, the late 1800s, railroads with their fixed tracks were seen as one of the main means of transportation. In contrast, bicycles offered the freedom to speed along any road or even a rough track, at any time, no longer dependent on the railroad schedule. In a sense, the drive to improve road surfaces for bicyclists paved the way for automobiles. As noted in the Altamont

Members of the Delmar Kiwanis Club enjoy a bicycle outing in this undated photo. Notice the penny farthing cycle on the left side. p. 14

Enterprise in 1888, “Road improvement associations are being formed by cycling clubs all over the country, and they receive hearty support from horse owners.” Among the improvements sought were side paths, also known as cycles paths. In our area, these dedicated lanes ran from Albany through Elsmere and Delmar and on to Slingerlands as these quotes from the Altmaont Enterprise demonstrate. “The cycle path from Albany has been completed as far out as here [Normansville]. It will run on through Slingerlands and back to Albany.” (July 8, 1898) “The belt line cycle path that passes through Elsmere, Delmar and Slingerlands is nearly completed.” (July 22, 1898) “Elsmere is booming. Cycle paths on every road, three new houses nearly finished, and the D&H Co. building a fine little depot which they intend having ready for use in a month.” (June 16, 1899) The freedom the bicycle offered had a huge impact on the lives of women. Susan B. Anthony in 1896 sums it up the best, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” In the September 4, 1897 edition of the Times Union, there are four packed columns under the heading “BiWheel Sphere” including this bit: “Miss Kate Chamberlain, a devotee of the wheel, has returned from the Thousand Island Park on the St, Lawrence, where she has been with her wheel.” The following Saturday had more news under the heading “Among Wheelmen, Gossip from the Cinder Paths.” The hey-day of cycling at the turn of the 19th century fell into a lull as motorized vehicles offered the freedom of the road at ever faster speeds. But bicycles have never gone away. Modern day Bethlehem has many wheelmen and wheelwomen enjoying their cycles and advocating for safer riding conditions. In 2009 Bethlehem established

In October 1997, Bethlehem officials dedicated a newly improved bike path that ran along Van Dyke Road, the Bypass Extension and Elm Avenue. From left to right are Gregg Sagendorph, Mike Cirillo, Red Putney, Doris Davis, George Lenhart, Sheila Fuller, Bob Johnson, and Dave Austin.

the PaTHs 4 Bethlehem committee (today known as the Bethlehem Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee) with the goal to form “pathways to homes, hamlets and healthy hearts.” NOTE: Still curious? Go to the website alloveralbany.com and look for the article “When bikes weren’t just something on the side” published in August 2015. There is a great map from 1900 of sidepaths in the Albany area. Also, find the book “Roads were not built for cars” for a good read about the history of bicycles and their impact on roads and automobiles. Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian and the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York.

Al Mallory and his son and Marjorie Terrell take a rest with their bikes. Marjorie’s brother Allen Terrell took this picture on June 4, 1944 on a country road in Bethlehem.

Ask the

Canterbury Vet Pets are Good for Your Health! This article is for all the kids who are trying to convince their parents to get a pet this summer. Usually kids will support their argument by informing a parent that having a pet will teach them responsibility and how to care for others. Most kids (and adults) don’t realize there are many health benefits to having a pet. Here are 5 great reasons that pets are good for you: Health: An Australian survey found that dog and cat owners were in better health than people with neither (health was measured either by how often people went to the doctor or by how much medication they took). And a study with people on Medicare found that those who owned pets made fewer doctor visits than those who didn't. According to the Humane Society pet owner tend to have lower stress levels, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels and are more likely to survive a heart attack. Pet owners also tend to rehabilitate faster from physical or psychological illnesses. Hypertension: A number of studies have found that just being around a dog or petting a dog can lower blood pressure. One study found the same with a pet goat. Research shows that when you stroke an animal, your blood pressure goes down and your heart rate slows. For many people, watching fish in an aquarium creates a similar decrease in blood pressure and heart rate and is both soothing and meditative. Longevity: A year after being released from a coronary care unit, a study found pet owners were more likely to have survived than people who didn't have pets. A UCLA Medical Center Study showed improved lung and heart function in heart failure patients after a 12 minute visit with a dog. The study also showed that these patients had a noticeable drop in stress hormones and perceived anxiety dropped significantly. Allergy prevention: Evidence is mounting that children raised with pets are less likely to develop allergies to the animals than children raised without. In at least one study, the effect was greater with cats than with dogs. And in at least one other, the preventive effect extended to dust mite, ragweed and grass allergies. Obesity: A study in Australia found that children who had a dog in their household were less likely to be overweight or obese than children who didn't. p. 16

Fitness: Research shows that pet owners tend to be more active physically, especially dog owners who get out and walk with their pets on a regular basis. In one study, two out of three dog owners took Fido for regular walks. Another study suggests that if you want to shape up, dogs make better walking buddies than humans do — perhaps because dogs don't make up excuses for why they can't go for a walk that day. In short, pets help reduce feelings of anxiety, stress and isolation and improve general health so take good care of your furry, feathered or scaly friend! FINANCIAL FOCU$ Help Protect Vulnerable Family Members from Scam Artists

If you have older family members whose cognitive functions or decision-making abilities have declined, or who are lonely or recently widowed, you might need to help protect them against financial scams. What steps should you take? First of all, try to gain a good sense of their overall financial activity. Look for red flags, such as a reluctance to discuss money matters, consistently unpaid bills, unexplained withdrawals, mysterious wire transfers or a sudden need to purchase large quantities of gift cards. And watch out for new “best friends” or caretakers who show an unusual interest in your loved one’s finances. Whether or not you’ve observed any of these activities, you can help your elderly family members by making these moves: Have checks (such as Social Security payments) directly deposited. You can help your family members avoid a lot of potential trouble by having their checks deposited directly into their bank accounts. Seek permission to become a joint account owner. By becoming a joint account owner on your elderly family members’ checking and savings accounts, you can review statements for suspicious activity. Of course, your loved ones may be initially reluctant to add your name, but if you have a good relationship with them, you should be able to explain the benefits. Shred bank statements, credit card offers and notices of lottery or sweepstakes winnings. One of the most useful gifts you can give to your elderly family members may be a shredder. Encourage them to use it to shred old bank statements, credit card offers and other financial documents.

with Jerry Pittz

Get on a “do not call” list. Telephone scammers are persistent and devious. By registering your family members’ house and cell phones at www. donotcall.gov, you may be able to reduce their exposure to unwanted calls. Obtain power of attorney. By creating a power of attorney, your loved ones can designate you or another trusted relative or friend to assist with their finances now – for day-to-day assistance and protection from scammers – and later, should they become incapacitated. Again, you will need to employ some sensitivity when discussing this issue. Check references of caretakers. As mentioned above, some caretakers are, unfortunately, dishonest. Before you hire one, check out this person’s references. And even when you do, be careful – scam artists have been known to use accomplices as references, so you will need to be thorough in your research and questions. Get to know your family members’ financial advisors. If possible, become acquainted with your older family members’ financial advisors. Any reputable advisor will welcome a connection with their clients’ loved ones. And if you are involved in any estate plans, this multi-generational relationship will prove beneficial for everyone. Ask to meet any new "friends" they have met online. When someone is lonely, they become vulnerable to online friendships. Sometimes, these new friends make promises of meeting, but never show – and then they suddenly need money for one reason or another. It can be challenging to guard against all threats posed by the scammers of the world. But by staying alert and taking the appropriate preventive actions, you may be able to help safeguard your loved ones’ financial security.
