FINANCIAL FOCU$ Financial Tips for Alzheimer’s Caregivers

If you are, or will be, a caregiver for elderly parents or another close family member living with Alzheimer’s disease, you may experience some emotional stress – but you also need to be aware of the financial issues involved and what actions you can take to help address them. You will find few “off the rack” solutions for dealing with the financial challenges associated with Alzheimer’s. For one thing, family situations can vary greatly, both in terms of the financial resources available and in the availability and capabilities of potential caregivers. Furthermore, depending on the stage of the disease, people living with Alzheimer’s may have a range of cognitive abilities, which will affect the level of care needed. Here are some general suggestions that may be useful to you in your role as caregiver: Consult with family members and close friends. It’s extremely hard to be a solo caregiver. By consulting with other family members or close friends, you may find that some of them have the time and ability to help. Consider obtaining durable power of attorney. If you possess a durable power of attorney for finances, you can make financial decisions for the person with Alzheimer’s when he or she is no longer able. With this authority, you can help the individual living with the disease – and your entire family – avoid court actions that can take away control of financial affairs. And on a short-term basis, having durable power of attorney can help you take additional steps if needed. You’ll find it much easier to acquire durable power of attorney when the individual living with Alzheimer’s is still in the early stage of the disease and can willingly and knowingly grant you this authority.

with Jerry Pittz

Gather all necessary documents. You’ll be in a better position to help the individual living with Alzheimer’s if you have all the important financial documents – bank statements, insurance policies, wills, Social Security payment information, deeds, etc. – in one place. Get professional help. You may want to consult with an attorney, who can advise you on establishing appropriate arrangements, such as a living trust, which provides instructions about the estate of the person for whom you’re providing care and names a trustee to hold title to property and funds for the beneficiaries. You also might want to meet with a financial advisor, who can help identify potential resources and money-saving services. And a tax professional may be able to help you find tax deductions connected to your role as caregiver. Finally, use your experience as a caregiver to reminder yourself of the importance of planning for your own needs. For example, a financial professional can suggest ways of preparing for the potentially huge costs of long-term care, such as those arising from an extended stay in a nursing home. Caring for an individual living with Alzheimer’s has its challenges. But by taking the appropriate steps, you can reduce uncertainties – and possibly give yourself and your family members a greater sense of security and control. I'm still trying to figure out why we buy so much bottled water. I understand the part about it being cold and easy to grab. But I’m mystified by the arguments that it’s cleaner than what’s coming out of our taps. For example, the NYS Dept of Health notes that Mountain Glacier bottled water comes from Rochester, NY. When I think about Rochester, the first things that jump to mind are not mountains, glaciers, or drinking water.

The Bethlehem Food Pantry collects school supplies for children in the Bethlehem Central, RCS and Guilderland School Districts whose families live in our town and are eligible to use a local food pantry. Donations may be brought Monday thru Friday before August 16, 2018 to: Bethlehem Town Hall Senior Services Dept., 445 Delaware Avenue, Delmar Bethlehem Area YMCA, 900 Delaware Avenue, Delmar

Here in Bethlehem, our clean drinking water primarily comes from three local sources. We have wells and a reservoir in New Scotland with a water treatment plant. We also have 40-feet deep wells that draw naturally filtered water near the Hudson to a second treatment plant in Selkirk. (No water is drawn directly from the river, and the water is tested regularly and has always been completely free of PCBs.)

Supplies needed include: Back Packs Combination Locks Pencils / Pens 1 1/2” Binders-Assorted Colors Colored Pencils Washable Markers Two-Pocket Folders Wide Rule Lined Paper College Rule Lined Paper Glue Sticks

Running two treatment plants that annually deliver 1.6 billion gallons of clean water to more than 11,600 households and businesses is not a simple matter. The water is clarified, filtered, chlorinated, and tested before being routed into 229 miles of pipes and our faucets. Treatment plants also have to be maintained. We recently replaced the filters at the New Scotland plant and made dam safety improvements at the reservoir. We’re about to install a pretreatment system at the Clapper Road plant in Selkirk that will allow us to reduce the amount of chlorine used in the water there. Delivering clean water is a 24-hour a day, every day business. Bethlehem is fortunate to have an abundant supply of clean water, and dedicated employees to get it to our homes!

Bethlehem Postcards By Susan E. Leath

Collecting, sending and receiving color postcards was all the rage in the early 1900s and Bethlehem was no exception. Views of nation-wide interest such as large cities, historic landmarks and popular vacation spots were wildly popular. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 1908, the U.S. Post Office reported that over 677 million postcards were mailed. This was at a time when the entire U.S. population was less than 89 million people.

Small cities like Albany, and even smaller villages like Delmar and Slingerlands, were soon represented on postcards. Even J. A. Ginder of South Bethlehem had postcards printed in Germany of local views in the hamlet as well as nearby Feura Bush. About the same time as all of these color lithographic images were circulating, black and white real photo cards were being produced. Photographers, amateur and professional alike, took pictures with their Kodak cameras and sent the film off to be developed and printed on special postcard sized cardstock.

All of the postcards featured here, and many more, are now on display, in full color, at Bethlehem Town Hall in the hallway opposite the Town Clerk’s office. Stop by during regular business hours and take a look.

Church Street, South Bethlehem AND Delmar Public School, Delmar

Both of these cards are circa 1915. The distinctive steeple of the South Bethlehem Methodist Church is clearly seen in the card printed for J. A. Ginder in Germany by the American News Company. The Ginders are known to have had a general store in South Bethlehem as early as 1886. Students line the front walk of the Delmar Public School in a postcard of similar vintage. As early as 1913, J. W. Dessert had a series of Delmar cards printed by the American News Company including this one. The school building, still standing on the corner of Kenwood Avenue and Adams Street, opened about 1909 and closed as a school in 1929.

Adams House Real Photo Postcard

The back of this real photo postcard features a place for the stamp with the word VELOX. The photo was likely taken by an amateur photographer with their Kodak camera and then printed on the Velox postcard paper, possibly as early as 1902. It shows the Adams House on Delaware Avenue at the corner of Adams Street in Delmar. Nathaniel Adams built his Greek Revival style hotel in 1838. p. 12

Greetings from Glenmont AND Greetings from Slingerlands

When looking at old postcards, one must beware. It was common for publishers to use stock or generic photos and give them a local label. Both of the postcards here are of the same vintage, circa 1940 or 50. “Greetings from Glenmont” is plausibly located in Bethlehem. Perhaps River Road? The other, “Greetings from Slingerlands”, is more problematic. Does this road along a river/creek match any view you can think of in Slingerlands? Perhaps along the Normanskill? What do you think?

Three Farms Dairy AND Schrafft’s Motor Inn

These are actually brightly colored photochrom postcards advertise local business in the 1960s. Post marked in Glenmont on November 15, 1966, the Schrafft’s card extolls their new motor inn on Rt. 9W “½ mile south of the N.Y. State Thruway” that included a heated pool and “100 luxurious rooms.” Blue and white 3 Farms Dairy trucks are on prominent display on the second postcard. The dairy, located in Glenmont, was announcing their new retail home delivery service. The back of the card notes that their 500 cow herd furnished all their milk products. Susan E. Leath presently serves as Bethlehem’s Town Historian and the author of Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York. Susan welcomes suggestions for Then and Now articles. Ask the

Canterbury Vet Check the Chip!

Have you ever lost your pet? Has your pet ever run away? Many people have been in this scary situation where you cannot find your furry friend. You run around the neighborhood, calling their name asking everyone you know if you have seen them, but they are nowhere to be found. August 15th is a day to celebrate National Check the Chip Day (National Microchip Day). This day brings awareness to microchipping your pets and to help more lost pets get home safely.

manufacturer. Don’t know your pet’s microchip number? Call your veterinarian and bring your pet in so they can scan your pet’s chip for you.

If your pet is not microchipped:

Make an appointment with your vet to have your pet microchipped. It only takes a few minutes and is the number one way to help a lost pet to be reunited with its owner. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

518-439-2700

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a small, electronic chip enclosed in a glass cylinder that is about the size as a grain of rice. The microchip itself does not have a battery—it is activated by a scanner that is passed over the area. Radio waves put out by the scanner activate the chip. The chip transmits the identification number to the scanner, which displays the number on the screen.

What information is stored on the microchip?

Microchips used in pets only contain identification numbers. There is no personal information stored on the chip itself. The microchip is not a GPS device and cannot track your animal if it gets lost.

www.canterburyvet.com 88 Delaware Ave, Delmar NY 12054

What Happens if My Pet Gets Lost?

Microchips make it possible for otherwise-unidentified pets to be reunited with their owners even if external ID tags and collars have been lost. When an animal is found and taken to a shelter or veterinary clinic, one of the first things they do is scan the animal for a microchip. If they find a microchip, and if the microchip registry has accurate information, they can quickly find the animal’s owner. In order to work, microchips must have up-to-date information connected with them in a database. National Check the Chip Day reminds people to update any obsolete information.

Now Enrolling for ALL PROGRAMS

How are Pets Microchipped?

A microchip is injected under the skin using a special hypodermic needle. It is no more uncomfortable than a typical injection. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can typically be implanted during a regular veterinary office visit. If your pet is already under anesthesia for a procedure, such as neutering or spaying, the microchip can often be implanted while they’re under anesthesia.

If your pet is microchipped:

Check your pet’s registration information in the microchip manufacturer’s database to ensure all contact information is current. To do this, you will need to contact the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip directly and give them your pet’s microchip number. If you do not know the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip, AAHA’s Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool can help. This internet-based application is linked to the registries of the majority of microchip manufacturers and allows a quick database search of any microchip made by these manufacturers. Simply enter your pet’s microchip number and the application will generate the name of the p. 14

Later that day, Alex began experiencing excruciating sharp, stabbing pain in her lower back and abdomen and she was unable to walk. Family members carried Alex to their vehicle and she was rushed to the ER. Alex reported that on the way to the ER her mom was frantic, fearing the worst; and her husband was undoubtable speeding, contemplating whether his wife and newborn baby would be okay. The emergency room Doctors suggested that she begin bedrest. She was told that her baby moved and was sitting on a nerve which caused the numbness in her leg as well as the severe, sharp, stabbing pain. Alex was in far too much pain to be bedridden with no solution for relief. Alex decided to go to Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, where the doctors specialize in prenatal care. Thankfully, they were able to adjust Alex’s spine, which turned out to be the exact solution that Alex needed. The adjustment gave the baby the room he needed to move off of the pinched nerve. Alex became much more comfortable and the numbness in her leg stopped immediately after that visit, and best of all, her baby was fine and Alex was NOT bedridden! Alex is VERY happy with the results she received from chiropractic care, and she is hopeful that her story will inspire others to visit Kinkaid Family Chiropractic if they suffer from similar complaints. Here at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic we have two providers, Dr. Jessica Kinkaid and Dr. Ashley Seaver. Both of our providers have a passion for helping patients feel and function their best, and they both specialize in treating pregnant women, new moms, kids, and babies.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, Summer Salutations Constant Readers, As I write this, it is another humid day with rain now thundering down upon the bookshop roof; perhaps a rainbow is visible somewhere outside. Reading is a great rainy day activity…but it actually is great in any season, right? This summer has been a unique one for Seamus & me…the shop was closed for a week in July so that we could meet with our family and gather as 28 on the sands of Ocean City, MD and lift our voice in prayers of thanksgiving for the life of my Darlin’ Dad, Donald Butner, Sr. We gathered in honor of him at The Carousel Resort in Ocean City, MD. Dad had passed in January and we thought that we would restart the tradition that he and my Mom started so many years ago after the passing of his step-Dad. My parents paid for 12 years of vacations (with life insurance money) at various Eastern Seaboard locations and we made great memories, actually living our inheritance (as one nephew said) You cannot place a price on memories made. The ages ranged from 22 months to me! For the first time my 5 grandchildren were together in one place, meeting family that my Fort Bragg grandkids only knew by name and photos. What a great joy it was to have them riding the waves, tumbling in the surf, building castles, tossing Frisbees and flying kites. One of my greatest joys was having my two sons together, making small talk and cooking meals together. They wouldn’t let me lift a finger in the kitchen. My 5 grandchildren carried the beach gear and helped with walking Seamus during the day. Our condo had a great balcony facing the ocean (incredible sunrises & breezes) and another balcony on the bayside for viewing sunsets. Although I brought a book, I only read a paragraph due to the many activities available; swimming, movies on the beach at night, ice skating show & free skate inside, live music beside the outside pool, the boardwalk, Old Time Photos, eating out and ice cream! Memories to last a lifetime that were simple and filled with love! My grandson Connor actually read quite a few chapters of “The Right Flight” by Chris Lynch (while riding out his sunburn) and his Dad, my son Matt, had “Band of Brothers” with him, my youngest granddaughter had a Barbie Mermaid book with her for her nighttime reading. The TV rarely came on and electronic devices mostly consisted of my granddaughters Trinity & Skye programming my new cellphone! I have a Snapchat Emoji now! I can contact them on their I-pods, since they don’t have phones! Yeah! Thank you for understanding about the shop being closed at that time. This leads me to the next announcement that

credit that will take an additional 20% off our price. This year, to date, I have donated over $1,500 in books to local fundraisers for charitable organizations in the area. Helping out with books for their raffles and gift baskets is something of which I am quite proud.. So…if your student has any Summer reading commitments…make sure that they come in for their books before I head for Maine. I realize that this seems like a lot of time to have the shop closed, well it is! I have shop finance obligations, but my family obligations come first, and I appreciate you understanding. When you have more of your timeline behind you, than ahead of you, you tend to assess life a bit differently. You weigh your pros & cons, and family always comes first. But, you, my loyal patrons, are also family. I shall continue to do my best to have the best service, selection and value for your reading pleasure in the Capital District. As one customer said many years ago, “You go into a box store for a specific book, but you wander into the used bookshop for the books to find you!” Also, where can you spend time with such an adorable greeting dog as Seamus? This past month I have taken in quite a few books in the Sci-Fi section of the shop. Books by Asimov, Arthur Clarke, Anne McCaffrey and Piers Anthony are among the hundreds of books just added to the shelf. I also recently added more in the mystery section by classic author, Dashell Hammett, in the suspense section by Brad Meltzer and W.E.B. Griffin. I just shelved dozens of children’s chapter books, picture books and young adult books. Most are reduced by 25-50% off original prices. The other day a new customer approached me regarding an author, whose books I did not have in the shop. He proceeded to share with me how this man’s writings had inspired him in a life-altering manner. The author, Mark Nepo, is a cancer survivor, philosopher and poet. “Facing the Lion, Being the Lion” had given him encouragement, solace and new direction. He lovingly held the library book in his arms and shared how he wanted his own copy to highlight, make notes and mark pages. I found one for him, under $10 and ordered it. To see someone so moved by an author is one of the great pleasures of owning the shop. I love it when books do that! I have a young customer who has been coming here almost 8 years, now a college student, Katie has shown me how she loves to write in her books, even novels, with questions, doodles and drawings! She is thrilled when I have what she is looking for. She never gives up her books! I have already started setting aside books for my trip to Maine where I will surely have more time for reading. If you need books for your vacation, backyard, poolside reading…stop by Tattered Pages, and I will do my best to match you to just the right books! Summer hours: M 103, T,W 10-5, Th, Fri 10-6 Sat. 10-2…Hope to see you soon, until then…thanks for telling others about our bookshop… happy reading.

Tattered Pages will be closed for my family obligation in Maine from August 22nd-Sept 5th to accompany my Trish & Seamus

husband to a gathering of his side of the family, in Maine. I love what Tattered Pages has become in the Bethlehem & surrounding communities over the years. We have been here 11 years in this location and provide not only a great connection to affordable books, but a place where patrons can conscientiously recycle a few books at a time for trade p. 22
