To Protect and Serve This November will have a profound impact on Bethlehem’s future and we need your help. As the President of the Bethlehem Police Officers’ Union, I have been elected by my membership to uphold the integrity of the occupation, maintain favorable working conditions and employee rights, and manage our charitable donations. As one could imagine, this is no easy task especially when you factor in the stress of our day-to-day job as our Department typically handles over 50,000 incidents per year. Unfortunately, Town Supervisor John Clarkson has added politics into the mix leaving us no choice but to respond in defense of public safety, employee rights, and the residents of Bethlehem. It all started when Supervisor Clarkson decided to reduce the size of the police department by intentionally delaying hiring and not replacing certain vacated positions. Clarkson’s reductions come at a time when a growing population is placing significant added demands and responsibilities on law enforcement. With an understanding and desire to work with the Town, our Union offered numerous cost saving solutions that were dismissed by Supervisor Clarkson. Clarkson also ignored multiple studies justifying needed police resources and staffing. Clarkson then hired a consultant consistent with his agenda and in an attempt to justify his staff reductions he attempted to implement some very misguided policies. Clarkson and his costly consultant proposed that our officers should no longer respond to unattended death investigations, incidents involving emotionally disturbed people and certain domestic troubles. Given the risk to life and safety, and despite what Clarkson may believe, these are some of the situations where our officers are needed most. Additionally, Clarkson is pursuing a reduction in shift minimum staffing from 1 Sergeant and 3 Officers to 1 Sergeant and 2 Officers. Relying on three police officers to cover a town encompassing 52 square miles and 35,000 residents is severely insufficient and unsafe for residents and officers alike. Clarkson then mismanaged the staffing shortage and resulting overtime he created by implementing a series of contractviolating policies aimed at weakening our Union. These actions forced us and the town to spend tens of thousands of dollars on seemingly endless litigation as we continue to defend our contractual rights. As a taxpayer, I am more than frustrated, and as a Democrat, I am ashamed of Supervisor Clarkson’s policies. Aren’t Democrats supposed to protect employment contracts and public employees? Clarkson himself is a public employee supposedly working for us and our families. We better hope we are getting what we are paying for. Here’s why: Bethlehem is home to one of the highest paid Supervisors in the entire state. Not only is John Clarkson paid $111,000 a year as Town Supervisor --- he collects more than $91,000 a year from taxpayers in the form of a state pension. That’s

more than $200,000 a year in public dollars. He makes more than our Governor! The question we need to ask, “Is Supervisor Clarkson worth it?” Clarkson talks about being fiscally responsible and doing more with less. Clarkson spearheaded a town wide property reassessment that resulted in significant property tax increases for many land and homeowners. Where has the extra revenue gone? Supervisor Clarkson has given his closest political allies and staff unprecedented pay raises. If an opening is not available for one of his political allies he will and has created a non-civil service position without adequately considering the financial impact on us the taxpayers. Clarkson is more concerned with consolidating power under his administration than working for Bethlehem families. We all know he tried to abolish the elected position of Highway Superintendent in order to put road safety in the hands of one of his political allies. To make matters worse, he attempted to expand his power and control by increasing the term of Town Supervisor from 2 to 4 years. Clarkson goes to extremes to protect his agenda. When lawn signs supporting the Bethlehem Police started popping up around town, he sent our town employees to tell property owners to take them down. Supervisor’s Clarkson’s controversial sign law is a clear restriction of your 1st Amendment rights and enforcement of such is an imprudent use of town resources. This is what happens when you put power, patronage, and politics before families. On Election Day, we have the opportunity to be heard. We must change Bethlehem’s current course, and start to right the wrongs of the past. We need a leader that has the best interests of the community in mind. We need a leader that is willing to work with the workforce he has been entrusted with, not against them. We need a leader that is willing to solve problems with our input, not despite our suggestions As a Bethlehem resident who has done his research, I know that leader is Jim Foster, and we need him now more than ever before. Town Supervisor Candidate Jim Foster has strong morals and a clear vision for the future of our town. Foster will take a genuine and sensible approach to the issues at hand. He was born and raised here and knows the town and what is needed to improve it. Even though I am a Democrat, I recognize that Jim Foster is right for the job and deserves our support regardless of our political affiliations. After all, it is not about blind devotion to one group or another. It is about recognizing what the community needs in a leader, and putting that leader to work for the people. As a resident of Bethlehem, I am asking you to please come out and vote for Jim Foster on November 3rd. As always we thank you and appreciate your support. Please follow us on Facebook at

CAR CARE TIPS 23 Oakwood Road

439-1446 ’s

The “four B ” of fall car care: Blades, Batteries, Brakes & Belts

Sure it’s not winter yet, but car-care experts advise consumers should use these final fair-weather days to get cars ready for what lies ahead. We suggest attention also be paid to tires, shocks and struts, oil, fluid levels, air filters and headlamps and tail lamps. Regular maintenance is the best preventative for winter breakdowns, but here’s a closer look at the areas experts call out for extra attention: •BLADES – If you’ve ever tried to scrape frost from your windshield by dousing it with washer fluid and running the wipers excessively, you know worn wipers can’t clear your view. Driving through a snowstorm with frosty buildup eroding your visibility is a horrible feeling. Avoid it by replacing your wiper blades before the weather becomes nasty. •BATTERY – Mopar advises the extreme heat of the summer months can reduce battery life, resulting in batteries that then fail in high-demand winter months. AC Delco tells consumers to watch for corrosion on cables and posts and seek help from a professional if these contact points require cleaning. •BRAKES – Before winter has you sliding your way through intersections, have your brakes checked and replace the pads as needed.

•BELTS and hoses – These will leave you stranded if they snap or leak. Look for thinning or cracking in belts and check all hoses for imperfections, too.

• Prime Ribs

•Tires – Changing temperatures can alter tire pressure. Make sure all tires are filled to their recommended tire pressure. Also check for tread wear.

• Prime Top Butts

•Shocks and Struts – Mopar says shocks and struts are the most overlooked parts on a car but argue that this should not be the case. Shocks and struts do improve vehicle handling, extend tire life and improve ride control a for the driver. •Oil and other fluids – Top off all fluids that have run low. Windshield washer fluid is used frequently in winter driving, so keep a gallon in your trunk to ensure you will always have a clear view of the road. Check the oil, and change it if the time is right. •Air filters – Mopar includes these on their fall inspection list. A dirty air filter is not generally going to cause your car to break down, but have it inspected too. •Headlamps and tail lamps – So you’ve completed a complete prewinter inspection of your car, but the guy behind you probably didn’t. Check your lights to make sure you are as visible as possible to other drivers. This may seem like a lot, but many items on this list can be handled quickly and easily. Once your car is prepared, you will be a more confident driver. Too bad there isn’t a list on how to prepare ourselves for winter’s wretched wickedness. 18

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Beware of Scary Inhabitants of the Investment World In just a few days, witches, zombies and vampires will be converging on your house, asking for candy. As is the case every Halloween, you’ll likely be merely amused over the sight of these costumed characters. But in other areas of life, such as the investment world, you may need to watch out for some seemingly scary entities. Here are a few of them: •The Horrendous Headline – Big, glaring headlines rarely offer any comfort to investors. Whether it’s political squabbles at home, conflicts in the Middle East or the debt crisis in the eurozone, there’s always something happening that’s perceived as jeopardizing the stability of the financial markets. Yet these threats are often overblown, and the markets have proven quite resilient for decades. Here in the United States, the most powerful economic engine in the history of the world has offered investment opportunities as crises have come and gone. •The Terrible Tipster – He or she could be anyone – your neighbor, friend or relative. But whatever their origins, Terrible Tipsters have one thing in common: They like to tout “hot” stocks or “can’t miss” opportunities. The problem is that by the time you actually hear about a hot stock, it may already be cooling off. And the “can’t miss” opportunities often do indeed miss. Don’t waste time, effort – and money – seeking a shortcut to investment success: There isn’t one. Instead, stick with an investment strategy that’s suitable for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

with Jerry Pittz

•The Scary Statement – When the market is down, you probably dread seeing your investment statements. But don’t let a few bad months, or even a bad year, cause you to stuff your money under your mattress. The financial markets can turn around pretty quickly, and if you’re out of the market when the next rally begins, you’ll miss out on some potentially big gains. So, put those negative statements aside and look back at your investment results over a period of many years – the big picture might look a lot less frightening than you’d imagine. •The Fearsome Forecast – The performance of the financial markets is notoriously hard to predict – but that doesn’t stop a slew of fortune-tellers from trying. And the same is true of the economy as a whole – predictions abound, but many of them prove far off base. You can always adjust your portfolio, as needed, in response to changing market or economic conditions, but don’t act on these possible circumstances just because someone, somewhere, has predicted them. Instead, follow triedand-true principles such as diversification, which can help reduce the impact of volatility on your holdings. (However, diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) The ghouls and goblins you see on Halloween are unlikely to cause you nightmares. And the various phantoms of the investment world may prove just as illusory. Don’t let them scare you away from investing. Then

& Now Bethlehem’s Reformed Churches By Susan E. Leath All of Bethlehem’s Reformed Churches trace their roots back to the Dutch colonial era of the 1600s. Johannes Megapolensis was the first dominie, or pastor, in our area when he arrived in 1642 to serve in Beverwyck (today’s Albany.) First Church in Albany (as in the first church in Albany) records his first worship service as August 17, 1642. Megapolensis, along with his wife Mathilde Willems and four children, lived and served here until 1649 when they relocated to New Amsterdam (today’s New York City.) First Church, with their 373 years of history, continues to worship and work in their magnificent Pearl Street building. Their “new” church was designed by Phillip Hooker and The historic marker in front to the Jerusalem Reformed Church notes that the “current edifice was erected in 1826.” completed in 1799. As the Van Rensselaers continued to develop their manor, and more settlers arrived, folks needed their own churches closer to home. Tradition holds that the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church at Bethlehem and Jericho, today’s First Reformed Church of Bethlehem, got its start in 1763. Their first minister for whom there is any record is the Rev. George Christian Bork. Bork was called jointly with the Reformed congregation in Schodack in 1798. He was required to preach at Schodack and Bethlehem alternately and to preach in both Dutch and English. Interestingly, First Church in Albany reports that the Dutch language ceased being used in service in 1790 with services in English first appearing regularly in 1782, more than 100 years after the British takeover of the colony in 1664. Bork served in Bethlehem until 1804.

First Reformed Church of Bethlehem continues today on land first ceded to them by Stephen Van Rensselaer in 1795. The 105 acre plot, located along today’s Route 9W in Selkirk, included a church farm, parsonage and meeting house. The church extant on the property was built in 1890 after the earlier church burned down on the afternoon of March 9, 1890. The late 1700s saw two more Reformed churches forming in Bethlehem, or what at the time was Bethlehem. They are now in the town of New Scotland which was split off in 1832. The New Salem Reformed Church dates from about 1783. The earliest meeting house was erected in 1813 and the church building in New Salem today dates from 1893. The congregation folded in 1998. The old Jerusalem Reformed Church was formed in 1791 by the residents in the area of today’s Feura Bush (then known as Jerusalem) and Unionville. Their stone church was built in the middle, on Unionville-Feura Bush Road. The first pastor, Rev. Harmanus VanHuysen was called in 1793 and split his time with the Jerusalem church as well as New Salem and Helderberg. Helderberg is today’s Altamont Reformed Church. After VanHuysen retired in 1825, the congregants of Jerusalem decided to split and form two new churches – Jerusalem Reformed in Feura Bush and Union Church in Unionville. Both are still going today. Delmar Reformed’s early name, the Second Reformed Dutch Protestant Church of Bethlehem, implies a connection with the First Reformed of Bethlehem; however, Delmar

COVER: The First Reformed Church of Bethlehem circa 1913.

Bethlehem’s newest Reformed Church is Glenmont Community Church which got its start from the Glenmont Chapel Association and the Reformed Church in America in the 1950s. The first worship service in their new church on Chapel Lane was held May 25, 1958 under the auspices of the Rev. Harvey W. Noordsy. Regarding names, you might be curious to know that on the national level, the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in the U.S.A. incorporated in 1819 and changed their name to the Reformed Church in America in 1869. All Reformed churches can trace their history to that early reformer Martin Luther, who, tradition has it, nailed his 95 theses against the Catholic Church to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany church on October 31, 1517.

To the right of the Unionville Reformed Church are the wooden horse sheds built in 1840. The Fellowship Hall on the rear of the church was added in 1906.

got its start as the east branch of the Unionville Reformed Church which is just a few miles west along Delaware Avenue. Congregants in Adamsville (now Delmar) desired a church closer to home so Unionville established an eastern branch in 1841. There was also some competition with the newly formed Methodist Church in Adamsville. The Rev. V. E. Westfall served both Reformed churches until 1847 when he chose to become a missionary. In 1848, the church at Adamsville officially became independent of Unionville. Since 1912, it has been known as the Delmar Reformed Church. Nowadays, few know about the True Dutch Reformed Church that was located on Feura Bush Road from 1827 to 1919. The True Dutch Reformed Church split from the Reformed Dutch Church in 1822 over differences in doctrine. The first pastor of Bethlehem’s True Reformed Church’s was Henry Bellinger who served the church for fifty years. After the congregation disbanded about 1919, the church building lingered until the property was sold in 1949 and it was dismantled. Today nothing remains. It was located just east of the National Grid station at 447 Feura Bush Road.

The New Salem Reformed Church is now a private home.

Trish’s Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

published as the best of that tale. I have read “Mockingbird” countless times since I was 12, and have taken something different from it with each read. I found “Watchman” to be a perfect companion piece, in Harper Lee’s vision, her words, maybe not what some would have wished for, but it is after all, her truth, and I loved it! Like a memory on a hot, hazy summer night, a reflection of reality in bits & pieces, which is often the way we remember. My next sequel that I read was “Doctor Sleep” by Stephen King. King has reported that while on book tours, the most asked question of him was, “Whatever happened to Danny from ‘The Shining’?” He would ponder, what did ever happen to this child of trauma & tragedy? The answer is revealed in this poignant, epic tale of good vs evil. Adult Danny struggles with the horrific memories, the reality of living on, fighting internal demons, alcoholism, and the best King demons disguised in the True Knot, a cult in plain sight, traversing America in their RVs! I could barely put this one down, though I did slide the bookmark in occasionally to dip into the lake. Whenever I read King in Maine I feel even more connected to the story! I loved it! So, if you haven’t read “The Shining”, and don’t think that you know it from the Jack Nicholson film, settle in with this great tale and finish it up with the sequel, “Doctor Sleep”! I am one of those shoppers who feel that all retail stores rush the Holidays…but I am going to be one this year… but perhaps you will understand. I am going to be putting out my Christmas crafting books, Cookbooks and some Christmas story books starting in October. This will allow time for crafters to take advantage of some of my wonderful books for gift making/giving. The romance/fiction books with Christmas themes will come out in November. I also have acquired a wonderful selection of young adult fantasy novels in the shop. Adult coloring books have become popular as well. I do have a few new coloring books featuring mandalas, animals & stain glass patterns. Just a reminder that I do not buy books here in the shop and take in books for trade credit in a limited number (6 adult books, 12 children books) at a time. That process does take time, and I can’t seem to get Seamus to assist in the process of entering & shelving books! At this time I would like to thank our good friend, Linda Gardner, for her years of help here at Tattered Pages. I truly appreciate what she offered here when working in the shop. For the month of October all books in the Urban Fantasy/Horror section will be an additional 10% off in the shop. So, when looking for a book, please remember that Tattered Pages offers service, selection & great prices, starting at $1 with next to new books reduced 20-60% off original publisher’s prices. Until next month…enjoy your time between the pages of a great book!

Greetings Constant Reader, October followed one of the most beautiful Septembers that I can remember. I love having the door open in the shop, so welcoming to customers! Tattered Pages is blest to have 4 huge storefront windows which flood the shop with ambient light. The screaming blue sky, the white puffy clouds, the slight nip in the morning air and the smell of pumpkin everything!!! I swear that I can smell the pumpkin spice from across the street at Dunkin Donuts! Autumn is my favorite season and summer is a close second. I love when summer temperatures linger into Autumn; great for the tomatoes, for outdoor activities and sleeping with the window open! By this time the children are back into their school routine, thinking of Halloween! My children & I started designing the jack-o-lantern’s face and their costume in September. The reading of appropriate scarey stories started in October. My oldest son, Matt, loved Halloween almost as much as Christmas, but not for the reasons you might think! He loved dressing up, he loved the candy, but he loved the energy of that night. Once a teenager, he loved to be the one to hand out the candy. He would dress up with a ghostly realistic skull mask, don white gloves, a black hoodie & jeans and stand (all 6’4” of him) behind a tall bush next to our front steps. He would simply step out slowly, silently with his white gloved hand pointing to the huge bowl of candy that was left on the front step, tilted in a fern stand with a spotlight on it. The sound of the screams, especially from the parents, filled the air! Good times! My Matt is currently at Fort Bragg, NC with his family where he continues the tradition of the Halloween excitement with his 3 children when home. I promised that I would review a few of the books that I read while on my vacation at Sebec Lake, Maine. I had a bit of a theme going. 3 of my books were either sequels or part of a series. First, “Go Set a Watchman” the much anticipated book by Harper Lee, the author of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. This book has received mixed reviews. I have stated before, that “Mockingbird” is my favorite all time novel. It still is. Reading “Watchman” to me awakened those feelings that I have for this story. I found it to be an excellent companion piece to the original. Scout (Jean Louise) returns home to Maycomb from NYC to visit her aging father. It contains the passion, humor, wisdom and humanity found in the original. If you lived in the 60s, which I did as a young girl, it rang true to me. From being chastised for not dressing formally for a meeting to the audacity of a young, single woman on her own, speaking up to her former authority figures, I could picture each scene Trish & Seamus clearly. It included many childhood memories not shared in the previous novel. Many have been critical or disappointed by the portrayal of Atticus in this novel. But, I was not. We Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages New & Used Books in the Glenmont Center Square, often discover when we have matured that many of our role models are a bit tainted by reality. I found the conflict realistic 365 Feura Bush Rd. #447-9910, Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC, for the time & setting. Trick -orTreating Tips:

Limited Openings for the 2015-2016 School Year!

• Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries after dark.

• Take along money for a phone call. • Wear identification that’s easy to read. • Always trick or treat in groups, accompanied by an adult. • Follow a curfew and take a watch with a backlight. • Plan your route ahead of time. • Stay on the sidewalks and out of the streets. Cross only at intersections and designated crosswalks. • Walk. No running. • Don’t trample through flower beds and gardens. • Watch out for open flames in jack-o-Lanterns. • Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods. • Walk with your head up and be aware of your surroundings. • Only visit well lit houses. Don’t stop at dark houses. • Don’t enter any houses unless you know the people. • Carry a spare Halloween bag—in case yours breaks or you fill your original one. • Don’t approach unfamiliar pets and animals. • Don’t cut across yards and stay out of back yards. • Follow traffic signals and don’t jaywalk. • Always watch for cars backing up or turning. • Review the “stop, drop and roll” procedure in case your costume catches on fire. • Never accept rides from strangers. • Respect other people and their property. • Be polite and say “thank you.” • Don’t eat any candy until it’s inspected for tampering under bright lights. • Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade. • Small children should not be allowed hard candy they may choke on. • Report suspicious or criminal activity to an adult or police. • Consider having a party instead of Trick or Treating.

Haunting Bethlehem for 25 years!

To all our Trick or Treaters we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the tears of sharing that magical night of witches, ghost, ghouls, and scaring you. We hope you have enjoyed all the hard work it took to create a fun and safe place to experience Halloween. Though out the years our Haunted House on Kenwood Ave. next to the ballpark grew. More scenes were created by Son and Father, while Mother made her Sweet Room an inviting place for friends and treaters to enjoy a bit of refreshments. We have seen familiar faces grow up, year by year, from toddlers to teenagers, and have enjoyed every moment of it. We would also like to say thank you to all our volunteers over the years for the time and energy they put into their roles as ghouls, witches, goblins and screaming demons! Special thanks goes to brother Scott, the gate Keeper of the Haunted House, our son Rob and his wife Monica (Great looking green which, by the way), our daughter Tamara and son-in-law Kevin, and our grandsons Michael and Matthew (They were the ghouls dressed in long black faceless attire, scaring everyone) for the great job they performed. It has been an awarding adventure. Everything has it’s time and it has come time to retire our Haunted House this year, Halloween 2015. We will miss those magic words...”Trick or Treat”.

Happy Halloween and thank you again for 25 years of MEMORIES.
