Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books
Greetings constant readers, As I write this article today, it is finally feeling like Autumn! It is a drizzly day, and I have shut the door to the shop for the first time since Spring during open hours! Seamus is cuddled up, tail over nose, and I am sipping on some tea with some great music playing on Pandora in the background. So much has happened since I last wrote! I had the cataract in my left eye removed in October, and the next one is being removed on Nov. 2nd, so, the shop will be closed Nov. 2-4th for the appropriate time to address this. It is still a bit difficult to work on the computer without eye strain, but I know that will resolve once the right eye is done and heals. In post-op exam I could read the bottom line of the eye chart for the first time in my life! I could read nothing with my right eye! I am now driving without glasses and able to watch TV without glasses! I haven’t been able to do that since I was 14. I never wear glasses, except “cheaters” when reading and that may even change! I haven’t read much since the operation, but I will share with you what I most recently read. I read the 2nd book in the Scotland Yard Murder Mysteries by Alex Grecian. “The Black Country”. When a human eyeball is discovered in a bird’s nest—Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad: Inspector Walter Day & Sergeant Nevil Hammersmith have stepped into something much more bizarre and complicated than expected. For, superstitions abound in the intertwined histories of the villagers, including a local legend about a monster some claim to have seen. In addition, a mysterious epidemic is killing off the inhabitants, and the village itself is sinking into the coal mines below. Add to that a backstory of a sniper from the Andersonville Prison during the Civil War and you have a page turner that not only entertains but informs! I love these books and will be starting the third book soon. November is the month where I reference and remember our Veteran’s in the bookshop, as well as preparation for Christmas. So…all books in our history/ military section will be an additional 20% off all month. This means that if you have an active trade account in the shop you will actually receive a reduction of 40% off all books aforementioned! I will also have a selection of Christmas crafting books at $5 per book during November so that you can start your specific crafting/cooking ahead of time! November also brings a very special event to Tattered Pages. Noted area Bethlehem Central & LaSalle coach, NYS Baseball Hall of Fame coach, and now AUTHOR, JESSE BRAVERMEN will be hosting a signing of his newly published book, “Comeback Coach”, here in Tattered Pages on Friday, November 10th from 5pm7pm! His book recalls his life from his beginning in NYC to the baseball fields, classroom to current time. This life inspiring man, was my son Matthew’s coach at both Bethlehem and in Mickey Mantle Ball when we moved here from Philadelphia in the mid-90s. I am so proud to offer this opportunity for the public to come and visit with Jesse, purchase his book and spend a little time in the shop.
p. 6
Don’t forget that Tattered Pages has its entire inventory on a data base, so you could call me to see if I have a book in store. I also offer the service of purchasing a hard to find book, at an affordable price, unlike other book stores in the area. I truly want to connect you to just the right books! With the Holidays coming, think of making gift baskets with a theme using a book from the shop as a focal point. You could put a few mysteries in a basket with a box of tea, a mug and a wonderfully scented candle. You could put an Italian cookbook in with pasta, a potholder, and a bottle of wine. You could even make a basket with a few westerns, a can of beans, hot dogs and a bottle of whiskey! The possibilities are endless! I also offer gift certificates for use in the shop to tuck into a basket of books! Now that the days are getting shorter…nothing beats a dreary day than a great book! I will be heading to the couch in the shop as soon as this article is complete. I will bring a hot cup of British Tea, Seamus (who is 13 ½), and my next read: The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. It has been recommended by several customers, and since I respect their opinion, and what they read, it is next on my list! In closing, I truly “look forward” to seeing you with crystal clear vision in November. I would love to see you at my special book signing and mark your calendar for my Jewelry Extravaganza Earrings sale with local Delmar Farmer’s Market craftswoman, Dana Flint on December 9th and 16th! Usually she has for sale over 200 pair of earrings with sterling silver wires and high end beads and crystals. Most start under $10! With each earring sale you will receive an additional 10% off any book purchases! Until next month Seamus, my faithful business partner/store greeter and Trish say…happy reading! Canterbury Vet November is National Diabetes Month. While this month was originally designed to increase awareness of this common endocrine disease in humans, we need to be aware of the growing prevalence of DM (diabetes mellitus) in dogs and cats also. Untreated, diabetes mellitus can be fatal to pets. In veterinary medicine, there are two types of diabetes mellitus: Type I DM and Type II DM. Type I DM is when the body doesn’t make enough insulin (which is a hormone that is normally produced from the pancreas), and requires life-long insulin therapy. This is most commonly seen in dogs. Type II DM is when the body has some insulin being produced from the pancreas, but it is an inadequate amount or something is interfering with its ability to be used by the body. This is most commonly seen in cats. Clinical signs of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats include: •Excessive thirst •Excessive urination •Inappropriate urination •Weight loss (most commonly over the spine), despite an overweight body condition •Increased hunger •Increased “whiteness” of the lens of the eye due to cataracts •Blindness •Weakness •Lethargy •Poor skin condition (like excessive dandruff or an oily hair coat) With diabetes mellitus, the body doesn’t have enough insulin (or the insulin is not effective), which is the hormone necessary to push sugar (glucose) into the cells of the body. As a result, the cells of the body are starved, and the body is stimulated to produce more and more glucose as a result. However, without insulin in the body, the sugar can’t get into the cells. The excess sugar that is produced by the body results in the clinical signs of excessive thirst and urination. Untreated, the body develops diabetic complications called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), where it breaks down fat in an attempt to feed the starving cells. These fat breakdown products (e.g., ketones) poison the body, resulting in vomiting, dehydration, inappetance, electrolyte abnormalities, and even too much acid production in the body. DKA can be life threatening, and typically requires intensive supportive care. p. 16
If you notice any of these signs (e.g., excessive thirst, excessive urination), please bring your pet into your veterinarian as soon as possible. With diabetes, the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated, the better it can be managed and there will be less likelihood of treatment complications. With appropriate care, the prognosis for diabetes is quite good. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Bethlehem
Dear Neighbor, Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund has been to provide financial assistance for emergency needs of residents of the Town of Bethlehem and students of Bethlehem Central School District, when such needs are not covered by other agencies or sources. These matters are treated with confidentiality. Our school personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services & other providers make most of the requests for assistance.
Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942
Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a long-standing tradition of the Bethlehem Community Fund. Funds are used for short-term emergency needs like medical expenses, utility or insurance bill assistance, auto/home repair bills, educational supplies and unreimbursable school related expenses or personal emergencies except in extenuating circumstances which will require additional details and justification. This winter, the Bethlehem Community Fund is looking at a record number of families needing assistance. Financial responsibilities and human service needs in our schools and community increase during this time of year. Our goal of $30,000 will enable us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors throughout the year.
Your gift will touch the lives of our neighbors in the Bethlehem community. Thank you for your support of this valuable community effort. Warmest regards,

FINANCIAL FOCU$ During Holidays, Be Extra Vigilant About Protecting Financial Data To help achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you should save and invest regularly. But that’s only part of the picture. You also need to protect your financial assets in various ways. One such method is guarding your personal information – especially any information that could be linked to your financial accounts. It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active. So, to help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions: Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs. Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords. Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season – identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items,
with Jerry Pittz
especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and do some digging on the websites that offer these megasavings. Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS, FedEx and even the U.S. Postal Service. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice forgers. Your best defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases. Keep your Social Security number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Security number online — to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number. Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at old-fashioned, brick-and-mortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you — and protect that card from prying eyes. By following these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

The Bethlehem Y is Us
It’s difficult to escape the 24-hour news cycle and the noise of social media and, instead, face new challenges and work for positive change. Fortunately, you can find respite at the Bethlehem YMCA, where we are all connected by our desire to lead healthier lifestyles and by our mission to serve one another. These divisive times present a great opportunity for us to show the best of who we are and what we have to offer.
The Y is so much more than a gym. It is a leading charitable organization that welcomes people of all ages, and every socio-economic background. Our goals are to help all individuals improve their health and well-being and to strengthen our community so we can all live happier lives. The YMCA is all about us -- working together to nurture and help each other. To help communicate this message, the YMCA of the USA created a special video – you can see it on Youtube by searching The Y: Us. Here is the text of the video: Us. It’s what this country is made of. A helping hand. A shoulder to lean on. Us is all of us. Different looks. Different voices. One sacred bond. But right now, that bond is fraying. Where do we find common ground? How do we get back to us? The YMCA fills the gaps and bridges our divides. It’s a place where we can become us again. Now, more than ever, the Y needs your support. Because where there’s a Y, there’s an us. For a better us, donate to your local Y today.
Let’s focus on the words shown at the conclusion of the ad to describe why we are members, why we donate, and why we have become a family: For common ground. For safe spaces. For community. For opportunity. For inspiration. For youth groups. For belonging. For a better us. The ad depicts the challenging times we live in, showing candlelight vigils and tears, protests and fights. However, it also shows what we can be – kids playing at the Y, learning new skills, having picnics, playing gym games, family dinners, and caring for the sick and for people in need. Ultimately, the ad reminds us of the critical work done at the Y by giving back to our neighbors, helping one another, and encouraging all of us to be our best selves. To see the good in people and be a positive force in our community, please consider engaging with us at the Bethlehem YMCA. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer, join, advocate and support the Y and its charitable mission. We truly are stronger together. Please stop by the YMCA or call us at 518-439-4394 to find out how you can work with the YMCA to make a brighter future for Bethlehem.

Yes, the video asks for a donation, but the goal of the message is so much more than fund raising. The pictures reflect the YMCA’s outreach to rural, urban and suburban communities and to people of different faiths and cultures. The message reflects the YMCA’s outreach to build strong communities and make healthy living a priority. And it wouldn’t be possible without all of us.
