Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Greetings Constant Reader, As I sit here writing, my loyal greeter dog Seamus is curled up napping on top of the shop’s cash box. Pandora is playing “Jingle Punks Hipster Orchestra” (which many ask me what am I playing in the background) which is kind of a merge of orchestra meets rock/pop! Think of it as Nirvana meets cellos! I feel that all people deserve background music or at least a great score in the background when they are working. If music isn’t playing in my background, it picks up in my brain...like I said, have to have background music! The door to the shop is open and the fresh air is filling the shop! There is also a competition outside for the background music of life just off Feura Bush Rd. & Rte. 9w…happily it is in competition with my little blackcap chickadees and house wrens who are busy building their nests and singing away as they do. One of those nests is right over my door and grass drops down daily. The other day…Mama bird hopped into the shop to retrieve a rather long piece of grass that blew onto the rug. Not so happy to have the first fly buzz by my eyes. I also killed my first mosquito a week ago in the shop. Spring in undeniably here! April brought so many birthdays in my family including my son, my brother, Seamus, my uncle, 2 brothers-in-law, 2 cousins, and ME! This birthday has me definitely out of middle-age (well that actually happened a few years back but I really wasn’t counting!) I have no plans on retiring anytime soon… but there are so many variables in one’s life…but if sales continues to improve (tell a friend or two please) and rent doesn’t increase (yeah, like that’s gonna happen) and people from the new communities (55+ communities, new home developments, apartments and condos come in) well…I could be here for many years to come…but perhaps with some occasional vacation days scattered about. Currently I have plans to shut the shop for 2 weeks of vacation in late August, as I did last year. I always put those plans on the phone, Facebook, the website and on the door with notice in advance. I appreciate those who have come to the shop to find a note because I am needed for my Darlin’ Dad (88 years old) from time to time. While reflecting upon my dear Dad, who lives at the Teresian House, I am going to return to a novel which I have mentioned before, “A Man Called Ove” by Frederick Backman. I have had such conversations with customers recently regarding this wonderful book, so much, that I watched the Swedish movie (with subtitles) for free on my Amazon Prime account recently. Rarely do movies carry the essence of the book so beautifully! With Seamus cuddled on my lap, I laughed and cried with my hand over my heart and a tissue in the other! If you haven’t had the pleasure… treat yourself soon. If you haven’t been in the shop in a while, let me remind you of a few things. Tattered Pages originated

in October, 2006 and moved to the Glenmont Center Square in June 2007! There are currently 19,000 titles in the shop and we saw approximately 2,500 people in the shop last year. Donations of boxes of books, from the shop, for charity fundraisers/raffles totaled over $3,000 last year. Over $2,000 in credit was used by “trade credit” customers to take additional cost off the price of the books that they purchased! Money is collected for various local charities, such as Capital Region Blue Star Moms, and we do display flyers for community purposes and events. I use Facebook to advertise events and sales (check us out at Tattered Pages, LLC it should show the business card with my granddaughter holding Seamus outside the shop… not the old one started by the former owner with a pic of faux Seamus & books. Please “Like” our page!) Because I am limited in space, I can no longer just take donations as you finish your garage sale or spring clean…but…I would be glad to look at up to 6 adult books & 12 children’s books if you have established an account in the shop. Your credits never run out…so if you think you have credits and haven’t been in for years…come on in…you might be surprised that you have the credits to take an additional 20% off of your sale! The shop gets “new” books all the time…I just recently but books that have never been in the shop before by Jack Campbell (SciFi), Georgette Heyer (Rom & Historical Fiction), James Patterson among others. I currently have Angela Duckworth’s “Grit” which won the best non-fiction Pulitzer Prize and sold “The Underground Railroad” by Colin Whitehead I am currently reading the 2nd book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King which I put off until the series was complete, and copies were in the shop so that I wouldn’t have to purchase them myself. I could not get in to the first book when it was first published. But then, I was in a totally different place in 1982! I may have also decided to not read it because I threw “Pet Sematary”, the previous book that I read by King across the room several times while reading it! But that shows you, with time, you may find a book more appealing or you might relate to it better. This Spring…why not go back to a book from an earlier point in your life and read something by that author…or re-read something to see how you connect to it now! For the month of May, keeping Mother’s in mind, as well as Memorial Day…all books in romance will be an additional 10% off as well as all books in my military section. Not sure which genre I will turn to next…but I know that Gardening books and healthy cooking are in my pile right now! I will also be reading to my Darlin’ Dad from his Chicken Soup for the Veteran’s Soul while enjoying some fresh air & sunshine. Until next month…hope to see you in the shop and happy reading! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages in the Glenmont Center Square at Rte. 9W & Feura Bush Rd. #518-447-9910, www.tatteredpages365. webs.com, mytatteredpages@gmail.com, Open M,T,W 10-5, Th. 10-6, Fri 10-7, Sat. 10-2 closed Sunday

Canterbury Vet National Specially-abled Pets Day May 3rd is National Specially-abled Pets Day. The goal of this holiday is to celebrate the animals who amaze us with how they rise up to overcome the challenges brought on by birth flaws, disease or injuries. This day honors those pets facing certain physical challenges, whether paralysis, missing limbs, blindness, deafness or other physical disability. The disabilities these pets face do not make them any less capable of showing love and living a fulfilling life. National Specially-Abled Pets Day also encourages potential adopters to consider adopting a special needs pet. This day is a reminder that disabled pets are very able. They are able to love, able to feel, and able to enjoy a good and healthy life. It is a day to educate the public about caring for these pets and encouraging people to adopt them from shelters. Unfortunately, specially-abled pets are often overlooked at shelters because people feel that it is too much work to care for them. But these animals have a heart full of love that they are willing to share with their forever family. There is often a misperception that these animals don’t want to be active or are limited to what they can do. Do blind dogs want to go on walks? Indeed! Do cats in wheel chairs still want to play with toys and snuggle? Absolutely! These pets are not thinking about how limited they are by their disability. To them, this is just their everyday life. Watching specially abled pets flourish in the face of adversity shows us that we, too, can overcome limitations with the same tenacity and that life can be cherished when we focus on the positive. With modern technology, caring for specially abled pets is becoming even easier. 3D printing has allowed us to create prosthetic limbs and customized wheel chairs for the pets who need help getting around. Blind and deaf dogs can easily be trained to understand voice and hand signals to communicate. There are endless opportunities for these amazing companions, if we only give them a chance to show their greatness. If you are looking to adopt an animal, consider one of these special pets who are so unfairly overlooked. As true with any adoption process, the key is to make sure the pets’ temperament and lifestyle needs match yours. Please send all your veterinary questions to: AskTheVet@canterburyvet.com or mail them to Ask the Vet c/o Canterbury Animal Hospital 88 Delaware Avenue Delmar, NY 1205439-2700

Street Names Explored By Susan E. Leath

As you drive in town, do you get curious about where the street names come from? Many are family names, and this article explores a few: Borthwick, Bender and Rupert. Others are more of a mystery, like Pictuay Road. Some just don’t seem to make sense. South Albany Road is not near Albany at all. Cover Photo:

The Wiltsie Farm historic marker is on Bridge Street in South Bethlehem.

Borthwick Avenue in Delmar is likely named after Harvey Borthwick. We know that he and his wife Clarissa lived on the street for the 1892 N.Y. census, and the earliest reference to the specific name “Borthwick Avenue” is from an 1896 newspaper article. Harvey, 1814-1892, was the son of Alexander and Marie Borthwick. The 1880 U.S. census is fun because Harvey Borthwick is the actual enumerator for his district. At the time, he was living with his second wife Clarissa in a household that included several unrelated people. Other clues about Harvey are two short snippets in the Albany newspapers. One from 1875, notes that “Harvey Borthwick, formerly in the employ of the Albany post-office, is erecting two new houses at Adamsville in close proximity to his own residence.” Another from 1878 notes that he sold “premises on the northside of the Delaware Turnpike at Adamsville to Edmund Willerton for $2,200.”

The homes behind this Borthwick Avenue street sign are quite old. The one on the left with the Italianate styling is circa 1850. The bungalow on the right is circa 1930.

The Ten Eyck house, located on Old Ravena Road, is in the Pictuay.

Clarissa Borthwick (1821-1893) was Harvey’s second wife. His first was Margaret Bender (18161870). Harvey and Margaret experienced tragedy in 1847 when the clothing of their 10-year-old daughter caught fire. The child died from her injuries. At the time the couple was living on Jay Street in Albany. Margaret Bender is one of many Bender family members with roots in Bethlehem. She is the granddaughter of Christian Bender (1732-1808) who was born in Wurtemburg German and came to the colonies at 14. He served the patriot cause during the American Revolutionary War with the 3rd regiment of the Albany County Militia under Col. Philip Schuyler. Bender rented 300 acres in Bethlehem. He and his wife Elizabeth Cramer (1739-1806) raised a large family that included their son Matthew, Margaret’s father. One reference says that Margaret’s mother, Elizabeth Ramsey, was the granddaughter of a Scottish baron. Another notes that Margaret married her second cousin, who would be Harvey Borthwick. A look at the Beers 1866 map of Bethlehem gives a clear indication as to why Bender Lane is named the way it is. In 1866, the road mostly follows its modern-day path from Route 9W to Elsmere Avenue. At that time, there are seven Bender properties in the area of the lane. Let’s skip to the southern part of Bethlehem for a look at Rupert Road and South Albany Road. Putting together the story of the Rupert family of South Bethlehem is complicated. Henry Rupert appears to be the first Rupert in Bethlehem. Henry was born in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1853. Sometime in the late 1860s he met Mary Shaffer Wiltsie and they married in the First Reformed Church March 9, 1870. Mary was the

young widow of Ambrose Wiltsie (Ambrose died at age 21 in 1863.) Mary and Ambrose had two sons, John and George, and it appears that Mary inherited a good bit of property from Wiltsie. The 1870 U.S. census has Mary as the owner of the farm and the 1870 agricultural schedule listing is also under Mary’s name (100 acres were listed along with a crop of rye, corn and oats.) By 1880, Henry is the primary name. Henry and Mary had six children, Oscar, Anna, Walter, Katie, Israel and Minnie. Exactly where Henry and Mary Rupert lived is unclear. On the Beers 1866 map there are several Wiltsies* in the vicinity of today’s Rupert Road, perhaps one of those properties came to Mary through Ambrose Wiltsie. By the turn of the 19th century, Oscar Rupert has a successful farm in South Bethlehem and by the 1960s, his son Henry was clearly living on Rupert Road. South Albany Road, just around the corner from Rupert Road, derives its name from the South Albany Development that Charles P. Brate laid out in the late 1920s. His plan had hundreds of homes on over ten interconnecting streets, and it included a water supply system. He thought to entice families coming to work at the new and nearby rail yards (completed in 1924). Before Brate’s development this area was considered part of the hamlet of Jericho. Only First Avenue and Scott Blvd ended up being builtt with 21 homes. In 1986, First Avenue was renamed to Currey Avenue, honoring Francis Currey who is a World War II hero and holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor. And finally, the mystery that is Pictuay Road, also in South Bethlehem. Pictuay appears to be a place name instead of a family name. Allison Bennet reports that her linguistic consultant says it is not of Dutch derivation but is possibly from

the Algonquin language of the Mohican Indians. Bennett tells the story of Tobias Ten Eyck whose gun “exploded in his face while he was hunting wild turkey near his home in the Pictuay.” This happened circa 1791. Ten Eyck’s home, built circa 1756, still stands on Old Ravena Road, just over the line into the town of Coeymans. Today’s Pictuay Road can be thought of as the road to the Pictuay, but we still don’t know what the word actually means. *Various branches of the family spell the name different ways. Wiltsie, Wilsey, Welsey, and Wilts all appear in the area on the 1866 maps. Wilts is assigned to the location on Bridge Street where today there is a historic marker honoring Revolutionary War veteran William Wiltsie who arrived in Bethlehem in 1795.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Give Mom a Gift to Help Her Financial Future With Mother’s Day around the corner, you might wonder if you should go beyond chocolates and flowers this year and give Mom something that can help her far into the future. What sort of financial gift can improve her life? You could, for instance, encourage your mother to fund her IRA. As long as she has any earned income, she is eligible to invest in a traditional or Roth IRA (although a Roth IRA does have income limits which, if exceeded, will reduce and eventually eliminate contributions). In 2017, the IRA contribution limit is $5,500, or $6,500 for individuals 50 or older. Traditional IRA contributions may be deductible, depending on one’s income, and earnings can grow tax deferred. Taxes are due upon withdrawal and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings are distributed tax-free, provided an investor has had the account at least five years and doesn’t start taking withdrawals until age 59½. You can’t contribute directly to your mother’s IRA, but you can give her money to use for that purpose, if she chooses. And since she has until April 17, 2018, to fully fund her IRA for the 2017 tax year, your gift now may help make it that much easier for Mom to “max out” on her account. Here’s another suggestion: Consider helping Mom pay one or two months’ worth of insurance premiums. It’s possible that your mother is paying for multiple insurance policies, like life insurance and disability or long-term care insurance, so any financial help on your part would be valuable.

with Jerry Pittz

her life. If she ever needed some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home or the services of a home health aide, the costs could be extremely high, and Medicare typically pays little of these expenses. So you might want to connect her mother with a financial professional, who can provide strategies for protecting her from long-term care costs. Here’s one more suggestion: Give a gift to a charitable organization your mother supports. Even though you’re making the gift in Mom’s name, you should be able to reap some benefits yourself, even apart from the good feelings you’ll get by helping a charitable group. As long as the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such groups), your gift can offer you tax advantages. On the most basic level, a gift of cash can earn you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25% tax bracket, and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity, you will be able to deduct $250 from your taxes. You may be able to get even more tax benefits if you donate appreciated assets, such as stocks, to a charity. If you give appreciated stocks you’ve held for more than one year, you can deduct the value of the securities, based on their worth when you make the gift – and neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments. Your mother has done a lot for you. This Mother’s Day, show her you appreciate her efforts.

2017 YMCA Annual Campaign A Success- Thank You!

In one way or another, we are all connected to the YMCA. Maybe it’s where you or your children learned to swim, skate, or play basketball. Maybe it’s where you went to summer camp and made new friends. Perhaps it’s where you joined a wellness class and got in the best shape of your life, or where your kids go to childcare to learn, grow, and thrive. For the past three months, so many members, volunteers, staff, and community supporters made a very special connection to the Bethlehem YMCA by donating to our Annual Campaign. Our 2017 Annual Campaign was, once again, a rousing success, raising well over $112,000! The Bethlehem YMCA thanks everyone for their generosity. One hundred percent of your donations stay in Bethlehem to support financial assistance for individuals and families who otherwise could not afford to use the programs and services of the YMCA. Remember, the Y never turns anyone away because of an inability to pay. It’s only because of your contributions to our Annual Campaign scholarship program that we can make, and keep, that commitment. The Y changes lives, ignites spirits, and strengthens our community by delivering innovative programs that improve our quality of life in Bethlehem well beyond the people who participate in them. Your donations to the Annual Campaign ensure that the YMCA can take on the challenges facing our youth, our health, and our community. In particular, the Bethlehem YMCA would like to thank the following businesses and organizations for their generous support of our Annual Campaign: Stewarts Foundation, Delmar Rotary Foundation, Adirondack Beverage, The Allstate Foundation, Bank of America, Momentive Performance Materials, National Union Bank of Kinderhook, Maynard, O’Connor, Smith & Catalinotto, Edward Jones Investments, Roux, Hill and Markes, Christmas Wish Foundation, SABIC, Roofing Innovations, Bonded Concrete Hockey Team, CL King, Bethlehem Youth Hockey, Girvin & Ferlazzo PC, Tobin and Dempf, O’Connor, O’Connor, Bresee & First.

In addition, we would like to thank the volunteer members of the Bethlehem YMCA Advisory Council and the wonderful staff of the Y for spreading the good word about the Y’s charitable mission and raising funds for the campaign. In a speech to the national YMCA, President Theodore Roosevelt once said that “the best form of philanthropic endeavor is where we all do good to ourselves by all joining together to do good for one another. This is exactly what is done in your associations.” Your dues pays to operate the facility. Your gift changes lives. Thank you for donating so we can continue to help young people achieve their potential, empower people of all ages to lead healthier lives, and strengthen the bonds of community in our town.

In conclusion, a YMCA Annual Campaign Haiku:

college. I have decided to return to Nicaragua for a longer mission trip through Enrich Missions; a nonprofit organization located in Matagalpa that promotes education through community outreach to provide for malnourished and undereducated children. I am very interested in giving back to not just the children in Nicaragua but in my town on a smaller scale. I am so fortunate to have been raised in such a tight-knit and supportive community such as Bethlehem. I have truly been build up by the people in my life that have come from so close by. During my month-long stay there, I will be working with children in the extremely impoverished community that come to the Enrichment Center daily to receive nutrition, tutoring, basic education, and other necessities for day-today life. One of the things I will be concentrating on is building Enrich Mission's very first library to benefit all of the children in attendance. As a member of the Bethlehem community, I am asking you to thoughtfully consider supporting me on this journey. There are several ways that you can help. Two years ago, I was given the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua for a short term mission trip through Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Spending a week immersed in a third world country while teaching, cooking, playing, and constructing really opened my eyes to the world outside of Delmar, New York. As a member of the community, I am active on Bethlehem's varsity swim team, a co-president of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), a certified lifeguard and swim instructor, a member of BLC's youth group, and a social activist in the capital region. This experience changed me in many profound ways, including steering my decisions as a high school junior to further my education in social work and Spanish during

The Friendship Singers of Delmar

will present their annual spring concert on May 20, at the Delmar Reformed Church, 386 Delaware Avenue, at 7:30 pm.

l! This year’s spring concert is special. We are celebrating the 35th anniversary of our group, and we are inviting any former members to join us onstage for the final song, “Let There Be Peace On Earth.” Many of our song selections this year have a distinctly Southern flavor. With some old favorites like “Old Kentucky Home,” “Summertime,” “Shenandoah/Deep River,” and “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody,” we will honor the fine musical traditions recalling the American South. We’ll rock some more with “Hard Hearted Hannah,” and “Swingin’ With The Saints.” Several more upbeat tunes and fun songs are on tap, and some surprises! Peg Dorgan is our accompanist. Marie Liddle is our director, and is celebrating her 20th year in that position. The public concert is the high point of our spring season rounds of nursing homes and senior facilities. It is open to the public, and refreshments will be available at intermission. A free-will offering may be made, and will benefit Bethlehem Senior Services.
