Spring Home Checklist After a long, dark winter, spring's bright sun and warm winds are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year's flower beds. Dwight Barnett, a certified master inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors, shared this checklist to help you target the areas that need maintenance so you can get your chores done quickly, leaving you time to go outside and play in the sunshine. •Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris. •Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects. 10

•Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood.

•Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.

•From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.

•Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. While you're at it, check the garden hose for dry rot.

•Examine the exterior of the chimney for signs of damage. Have the flue cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep. •Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home's foundation. Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete.

•Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis. •Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yardwork easier.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Watch for Changes to the FAFSA If you have a child in college, you’re probably familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be completed to help ensure that students don’t miss out on federal and state grants, work-study jobs and loans. But you might not know that some important changes will be coming to the FAFSA during 2016 – and these changes can affect both the process of filing for aid, and, possibly, the amount of aid your child will receive. Here are three key changes to watch for: •Earlier availability of the FAFSA – Currently, you need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after Jan. 1 – which means you’re probably filling out the form even before you’ve filed your taxes, which aren’t due until April. As a result, you may have to estimate your income and update the information later. However, beginning with the 2017–2018 school year, you can complete the FAFSA starting on Oct. 1 of the previous calendar year, rather than wait until January. At that point, you will already have filed your 2015 taxes, so in filling out the FAFSA, you won’t have to rely on estimates of your income. For 2016 only, this change presents something of an anomaly – specifically, you should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible for the 2016–2017 school year, using an estimate of your 2015 income, and then complete the FAFSA again in October for the 2017–2018 school year, using your actual 2015 income. In future years, you’ll only have to complete the FAFSA once, with applications accepted beginning each Oct.1.

sheltered, with the exact amount depending largely on your age and marital status. For the 2016–17 school year, this sheltered asset amount has been reduced significantly. However, while this reduction could have some effect on your student’s aid package, it shouldn’t be too severe because income, more than assets, is a bigger factor in the federal financial aid formula. •No more shared mailing list – When filing the FAFSA, students can choose up to 10 colleges to receive their financial information. Previously, when students sent their FAFSAs to multiple colleges and universities, these schools could see the other institutions on the mailing list. But starting with the 2016–2017 application, schools will no longer have this information. This could actually benefit your child. Previously, if a school saw it was listed first on the FAFSA, it might have assumed it was the student’s first choice and, as a result, may not have felt the need to be flexible in awarding financial aid. Now, though, without a list of its competitors, a school might be more open to negotiating a more favorable aid package for your child. It’s a good idea to stay current on the changes connected to the FAFSA because it helps determine financial aid eligibility – and financial aid is a key component of your strategy to pay for your child’s (or grandchild’s) education.

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

This information is offered for broad, informational purposes only. Edward Jones does not employ financial aid experts or give financial aid advice. This is a highly specialized field, and specific questions should be directed to a qualified financial aid officer.

•Lower “asset protection” allowance –When you report your financial information on the FAFSA, some of your assets – such as your IRA and 401(k) – are not counted toward the resources you’re expected to contribute to your child’s education. Some other assets are considered available, but a percentage of these assets can be

It’s All in the Timing

Annika Clarke, a seventh grader at Bethlehem Central Middle School in Bethlehem, NY, is heading to the World Championships of Irish Dance in Glasgow Scotland this month. (March, 2016) Annika is a student of Lexa Hickey at the An Clar School of Irish Dance, located at the Celtic Hall in Albany, NY. An Irish Dancer since the age of four, Annika started dancing in Rhode Island and Boston. She has been dancing at the championship level since age 8.

CAR CARE TIPS With automotive engines as with many aspects of daily life, timing is critical. One vehicle component often overlooked during routine maintenance is the engine timing belt. If it fails, the engine will stop and the car will coast to a stop. The lucky motorist will only have the inconvenience of being stranded on the side of the road until the car can be towed to a repair facility to have the timing belt replaced. On the other hand, the engine might suffer severe, if not catastrophic, damage to its internal components. This potential disaster can be avoided easily and relatively inexpensively by replacing the timing belt within the required replacement interval. Timing belts resemble an engine accessory serpentine belt in appearance, only they typically have square teeth on the inside surface. They usually are constructed of rubber reinforced with nylon. The timing belt transfers the rotation of the crankshaft to the camshaft. The rotating camshaft activates the valves, which provide air and fuel to the cylinders and expel combustion gases to the exhaust system. The valves and pistons are constantly moving up and down at very high speeds. When the pistons are down, the valves are open; when the piston is at the top of its travel, the valves are closed. Some engines don’t allow clearance between a valve at its lowest point and a piston at its highest. The timing belt, therefore, is the critical link to ensure that these components don’t collide. If collision occurs, damage to the valves, pistons, cylinder head and cylinder walls can result. This can be an expensive repair. Timing belts usually are protected from foreign objects by a cover, making visual inspection impossible. Many domestic vehicles built within the last several years and the majority of imports are equipped with a timing belt. Other engines rely on a timing chain rather than a belt. Refer to your owner’s manual or take your car to a repair facility if you are unsure. The owner’s manual maintenance schedule is a source of timing belt replacement intervals, typically every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Timing belt replacement usually requires removal of the engine drive belt that operates the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioner. Consider replacing this belt, or multiple belts, when having a new timing belt installed.

It has not been an easy journey for Annika. In May of 2014, after a routine appendectomy, it was clear that something was not right. Annika developed debilitating pain in her stomach and head, and by August had lost the ability to walk. She was on crutches for nine months, and her family wondered if she would walk again. Dance was unthinkable. She had every test possible and saw many specialists. It was discovered that she had developed a rare disorder known as CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). In a long search for a cure, or at least treatment, her family found the Mayo Clinic Pediatric Pain Rehabilitation Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. Annika spent six weeks in their program where she worked for 8-10 hours per day with physical and occupational therapists who worked intensively to help her retrain her neurological system. At this program, the children use therapy, meditation, art and other modalities to cope with the pain that accompanies this disorder. They used no medication for Annika. After four weeks, Annika was still not bearing weight on her injured foot. Her OT asked her to bring in her dance shoes the next day. Something clicked for Annika and she put on her jig shoes and started dancing again in front of the mirror. By May, she was regaining her mobility and walking without boot or crutches. When asked how she did it, she told her therapist she would rather dance and try to forget the pain than never dance again. She knew that there was nothing wrong with her foot. It wasn’t until August of 2015 that she was able to train again for dance, but by November she was ready for the regionals in Philadelphia. At that competition, she placed 8th out of 165 champion dancers, qualifying her for the World Championships. Somehow, she has gone from not walking in May to placing 8th in the Mid Atlantic region & qualifying for Worlds. This has been due to incredible hard work by Annika and her amazing teacher, Lexa HIckey of An Clar. None of us can believe that we will be watching her dance in Glasgow in March! We see all these dancers and they make it look easy -- I know from personal experience that there is always a story behind the dancer! Just qualifying for World’s is a huge accomplishment, but after all that Annika has overcome, she is already a winner!

& Now A House on the Move. By Susan E. Leath Cover: Grace and Clarence Blanchard sit in front of their imposing home. If you look close you might see the three A modern photo of the Blanchard house. dogs posing with them.

It is hard to believe that in the summer of 1941, the elegant home pictured here took a ride along Delaware Avenue. It is also hard to believe that it used to stand where today’s Delmar Market Place is. But let us go back in time a little further and set the stage. By 1863, when the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad came through, Adamsville (today’s’ Delmar/Four Corners area) was an established hamlet complete with school, hotels, two churches, general store, blacksmith shops, etc. John and Louise Adams were raising daughter Jesse (born in 1860) and were soon to have daughter Grace (born in 1868.) John was the proprietor of Adams House Hotel established by his father in 1838. The small family must have always been close. Even after Grace and Jessie were married, they lived nearby to each other on Delaware Avenue. Jessie married Zeb A. Dyer in 1889 and they had one son, John born in 1891. Grace married Clarence Blanchard, Sr. about 1893 and they had two sons, Clarence, Jr and Nathaniel. In the 1900 US census, the three families are right next door to each other. Jessie and Zeb Dyer are in one household; John and Louise Adams and Grace and Clarence Blanchard together in another. Tragedy has a way of striking. Zeb Dyer died in 1904 at the age of 44. He was a prominent attorney active with the Democratic Party and elected to District Attorney in 1898. John Adams died in 1905 24

at the age of 71. Around this time, Louise Adams determined to build a new house for herself and her daughters. It is the one featured here. Grace and Clarence, along with Louise lived on one side, Jessie Dyer and her son John lived on the other. The 1910 US census clearly has the families together with Louise listed as the owner. This arrangement seems to have worked out for a while, but by the 1920 US census, Jessie (age 59) and son John (age 28 and an automobile salesman) are living on Kenwood Avenue. Grace (age 50) and Clarence (age 50, dairy house salesman) are living with Clarence, Jr and his wife Alida and children John and Ruth. Louise Adams had died in 1912. In 1941, the Four Corners were growing as a commercial center, and the elegant house found itself in the way of development. A Knickerbocker News article dated August 12, 1941, notes that it took two men 10 Jessie Adams as a young child, probably around 1865.

Half of the house sits on Delaware Avenue near the intersection with Adams Street.

days working with handsaws to divide the house in half. The halves were then moved separately for about a block and half along Delaware Avenue. According to the article, Clarence Blanchard, Sr went along for the ride sitting on one of the back porches. “You don’t notice the movement so much,” he said. “It is too slow.” The house was creeping along on rollers.

Today, the home is secure in its Delaware Avenue location. While the wide front porches have been removed, the house is easily recognized by the pair of oval windows over the front door. Susan welcomes your suggestions for future Then and Now articles. She can be reached at

Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York, the latest book by town historian Susan E. Leath will be available beginning March 14. The book compiles Leath’s Our Towne Bethlehem articles plus her other writings about local history. “I hope the people and places highlighted in the book will enrich the reader’s experience of our town,” said Leath. “In the rush of our daily lives, I hope people will slow down and remember where we come from and those who went before us. Local history, the kind that is hiding in plain sight right around us, touches on so many larger historic themes like the American Revolution or the Civil War.” Leath’s book dips into hundreds of years of local history from pre-historic Native Americans, to the early Dutch settlement era; from our agricultural heyday to post World War II suburbanization. Articles feature historic locations all over the town of Bethlehem including the hamlets of Delmar, Selkirk, South Bethlehem, Cedar Hill, Slingerlands and Normansville. It explores recognizable local able landmarks such as the Adams House in Delmar and the Cedar dar Hill Mansion in Selkirk. Readers will learn about the families lies that gave their names to such familiar hamlets as Slingerlands nds and Selkirk, the street names of Groesbeck and Winne, and nd water ways like the Hudson River and the Normanskill. Historic Tales of Bethlehem, New York, published by thee History Press, is available for sale at the Town Clerk’s officee at Town Hall, I Love Books in Delmar, Tattered Pages in n Glenmont, and many other retailers including online. All of the author’s royalties will be donated to the Bethlehem Historical Association. Jessie Adams Dyer 25

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE Y REGISTER NOW FOR SUMMER CAMP & SAVE With our relatively mild and snowless winter ending soon, we may just skip right over spring and head right to summer. It’s happened before. Also, it’s not too early to start thinking about sunshine and summer fun at the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp. Last year, the Bethlehem YMCA had its most successful summer camp ever, and 2016 promises to be even more fun, with more campers, more trips, and more specialty camps to spark every child’s interest. Registration is now open for summer camp at the Bethlehem Y and you can save money by signing up early. Our special offer is $10 off your first week of camp if you sign up during March. Please stop by the Y front desk for more information and to sign up your kids for a great summer at the Y.

DELMAR DU SIGN UP 2-10-2 adds up to a fun day of exercise and friendly competition at the 5th annual YMCA Delmar Duathlon, cosponsored by the Bethlehem Department of Parks and Recreation and the Bethlehem YMCA. Registration is now open for this event, which has grown in popularity every year. It will be held on Sunday, April 24th at 8:00 a.m. beginning at the Elm Avenue Town Park. The price for individual competitors is $55 and its $70 for a team entry – which is a new category in this year’s race. Go to DelmarDu.com to sign up for two miles of running, five miles of biking, two more miles of running, and a full day of fun.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE Y When the temperatures dip and the icy winds blow, there is no question that the Bethlehem YMCA is the most popular place in town. People flock to our warm and friendly confines for many reasons. In the style of the old TV news “man on the street” interviews, I recently conducted “person in the hallway” interviews at the Y and asked people of every age group what they liked best about the Bethlehem YMCA. Here are some responses:

“All the stuff for my kids, the open swim, and my daughter takes swim lessons here which is awesome, she learned to swim here. We love the open skate for the kids. I also work out here. The whole family membership for us is perfect.” “The personal trainers are very helpful. When you ask them a question they will step in and show you how to do the right workout.” 26

“I like the community feel of the YMCA and running into people I know. “ “I like that I can bring the kids with me. It’s the best thing about coming here. We use the ice skating, the pool, prime time, I can work out, and it’s great.” “It’s great for the grandkids. They have many opportunities, they like the pool and the kids room. It’s very enjoyable. Everybody’s so friendly. I also use the hiking trail in the back of the Y.” “I came back to the Y so I could get in better condition. I use the gym. The staff is great, very helpful. “I like the aerobic classes with Karen. I have wanted to be a member of this Y as long as it’s been here. My daughter bought me a membership and I am very grateful for that. I’m always looking around to see what else there is to take advantage of.” “Prime time makes it accessible and easy for families like ours. We have four kids. We can work out and have everyone go to the pool. I like that the Y is family focused and accessible for all ages and levels and has so many things to do like fitness, the pool, and the classes.” “I like Ethan’s High Intensity training class.” “The day care. I get an hour and a half when I can actually go to the gym. The people that come here are really nice.” “We work out here; my son has gone to summer camp here for three years.” “I come to the Y to play basketball with my friends.” “We like the pool and the ice skating rink and to just to come and play on the courts too.” So there you have it. Actual comments from actual Bethlehem YMCA members. There is truly something for everyone at the Y, no matter your age, no matter your fitness level; we have something that is fun and exhilarating for the whole family. That’s why about one in three people in Bethlehem are members of the YMCA. If you are not a member, please stop, get a tour, talk to our staff and find out what you can do at the Y and what the Y can do for you.

Canterbury Vet K9 Veterans Day In several states across the country, March 13 is K9 Veterans Day. Dogs have been serving with soldiers since the earliest days of the Revolutionary War. World War I had produced a certifiable celebrity in Stubby, a pit bull who fought in the Argonne and whose feats and accomplishments were honored by a grateful nation. After his death in 1926, Stubbies remains were preserved and sent to the Smithsonian. The first dog to receive the Purple Heart was Chips, a Shepherd-Collie-Husky mix who shipped out in 1942. Chips saw battle during the invasion of Sicily, when he broke away from his handler and attacked a machine-gun nest. The dog was wounded in the attack but flushed out four enemy soldiers, who were captured. Chips later helped to capture 10 enemy combatants on another patrol—on the same day. Chips was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, and Purple Heart for his heroism. The United States K9 Corps were created on March 13, 1942. Border Patrol K9s, Customs K9s, Police K9s, Secret Service K9s, Airport Service K9s and FBI K9s daily work to save and protect the Americans and the homeland. Military dogs have always been a part of American military efforts. They continue to serve on the borders on land and sea every day. These dogs are trained to serve numerous functions, including search, rescue, explosives detection, scout, patrol and enemy subdue. By the end of World War II, over 10,000 dogs were trained to search for land mines, tunnels, traps, trip wires, and other hazards undetectable to the two-footed soldier. Dogs were trained to alert troops of ambushes, protect camps, and track enemy soldiers and snipers. Over 30,000 dogs have served in the military since March 13, 1942, with over 5,500 dogs deployed during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. There are approximately 2300 active duty dogs currently deployed around the world, including over 600 in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these heroic dogs never came home and those that did continue to mean the world to the handlers who worked with them, and the many servicemen and women whose lives were saved by them.

Jim’s St. Patrick's Day Toasts s Health and long life to you Land without rent to you The partner of your heart to you And when you die, may your bones rest in Ireland As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinterss never point the wrong way. Here's to your coffin.... May it be built of 100 year old oaks which I will plant tomorrow May your neighbor respect you, Troubles neglect you, The angels protect you, And Heaven accept you. e. May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future. t. May you live to be a hundred, with one extra year to repent. May you never forget what is worth remembering, Or remember what is best forgotten. n, May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, The insight to know where you are, and the foresight to known when you've gone too far.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Readers, In this most interesting of Winters, what have you been reading? Some customers have been stocking up on mysteries, romance, even cookbooks for these cold winter nights. I was delighted to see so many children in the shop over President’s Week break. Goosebumps were flying off the shelf, as well as American Girl Doll books, Animal Ark books, Rugrats and Berenstain Bears chapter & picture books. I was amazed at the number of action thrillers that sold that week as well. Some popular choices were Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Daniel Silva and John LeCarre among my male readers. I, personally, am finishing my 47th novel by Stephen King, “Bazaar of Bad Dreams”! I will have a change of pace with my next read which will be by Australian novelist, Liane Moriarty, “What Alice Forgot” not to be confused with “Still Alice” by Lisa Genova, she is well known for “The Husband’s Secret” and “Big, Little Lies”. As you have already heard, one of my favorite authors recently passed away at the age of 89. Harper Lee, author of my favorite novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Go Set a Watchman” passed in her hometown. Thank you for the gift, truly the gift, of what I think is one of our great American novels. I shall always associate warm, humid, hazy nights with this book, for I read it at the age of 12 for the first time on summer vacation. It is as if that environment whisked me to Alabama where I would hang in the fields with Scout, Jem, Dill, Calpurnia, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch. Though I grew up in Westmere, NY, I spent my summer days in sunlit fields, shaded pine forests, splashing in sparkling creeks, riding my bike hands free down hilly knolls, and just daydreaming watching the clouds pass by. Thank you, Miss Lee, for that connection and that story which will live on forever for generations to come and always hold a unique place in my heart. Just a reminder to all…I have my entire inventory on a data base…so…you can always contact me by phone, Facebook, or e-mail for what you are looking for. If I don’t have it in stock, I would gladly order for you online a used copy. I never inflate the price because it is no longer in print, as some other bookstores do. I want to connect my readers with books…maybe it is the “teacher” in me…but I truly want to connect people with just the right books. When bringing in books, remember…there is a procedure. No more than 6 books for adult books, 10 books for children and 10 DVDs... and of course, they should be clean of odor & dirt. I am not the location for books that you want to “get rid of”, but a place where consumers can conscientiously recycle books while earning credits that work like a coupon taking off an additional 20%! If you have large quantities of books, do not bring them here, but contact me by phone so that we can discuss…I have a connection to someone who may be willing to work with you on large quantities of books. Being a part of the Glenmont community is an honor…being a small, business owner is challenging, and so 36

I depend on word of mouth from satisfied customers. SO…I have an opportunity for my constant readers! Each Friday in March I will be offering special. If you bring a friend in with you who makes a purchase…you will receive $5.00 off coupon for your current or future purchase!!! I have over 19,000 titles all reduced from 20-60% off original publisher’s prices. As a small business owner, I want to congratulate my friends at Romo’s Pizzeria restaurant, in there beautiful new location (where the Glenmont Beverage Center used to be)! The food is incredible, the ambience friendly, warm and intimate… the sit-down dinner menu is awesome! The bar is lively, and they even had live entertainment at their Grand Opening. You could always place an order for takeout and come over and browse with me at the bookshop! Also, next to me, where Romo’s was, is a new women’s boutique being built which will feature women’s clothing and accessories. I’m excited! Go Glenmont! In closing, thank you to all who came into the bookshop in February, it was one of my best one’s ever! Your support, and your word of mouth are truly helping me in my little operation. I love our conversations, our book discussions, catching up on family, giving education advice (once a teacher always a teacher!) letting customers cuddle with Seamus and sharing my love of books! Until April…make some time for a good book!
