Students from Bethlehem honored with the
Suburban Council Excellence in Leadership Award Congratulations to BC Seniors Kathryn Sancilio and Ryan Murray as well as Max Jones of CBA who were honored at the Suburban Council Excellence in Leadership Awards dinner last month. The honor goes to a male and female senior student-athlete from each Suburban Council school who excels on the field, in the classroom and, even more importantly, as a student leader. These students are the epitome of what a true interscholastic studentathlete is.

As a senior at Christian Brothers Academy, Jones carries a 4.0 grade-point average (top five percent of his class).
Jones holds the rank of Cadet Colonel, making him the highest ranking officer in the school. Max is a standout at both quarterback and safety on the football team. He has committed to Harvard Crimson.
Ryan Murray
Murray is a multi-sport athlete in Boys Volleyball, Boys Basketball and served as a Unified Basketball student coach. He was a Suburban Council Boys Volleyball All-Star as well as a Blue Division Exceptional Senior Basketball All-Star. Murray’s leadership led BC to its first Section ll Boys Basketball Championship since 1972. Ryan will be attending Marist College in the fall where he will study Business.

Sancilio is also a multi-sport athlete in Girls Swim & Girls Lacrosse served as captain on both squads this year. She is a three-time state qualifier in swimming. Kathryn was named to the 2017 US Lacrosse All-American Team and 1st team Suburban Council All-Star. Sancilio has received an athletic scholarship to play D1 Lacrosse at the University at Albany where she will attend in the Fall.

“The most affordable getaway is found between the covers of a great book!” Greetings Constant Reader,
“Pooh!” Her mom said that sometimes she has to cut off bedtime stories at 30 minutes because she just loves being read to and becomes more wound up than relaxed! My 2 year old niece Caylin and her 10 month old brother Cillian both received a collection of books with Thomas the Tank Engine, Abby Cadabby from Sesame Street, Elmo, Tomie dePaola books and “Are You My Mother” in the mix. I want my great nieces/nephews to connect books with their Aunt Trisha. My grandchildren already know that there will be hand-selected books for them throughout the year. I love that my granddaughter, Trinity, still loves the Dork Diaries and rewards herself with coloring the pages after a chapter is done. My nephew Ethan still loves Justice League & Pokemon books I brought to him at the picnic. I have a very nice selection of Pokemon, Superhero and Little Monster books on the shelves currently. In July, we will be in summer hours mode, unless an emergency arises, I always post a phone message if the shop is closed unexpectedly. Summer hours: M,T,W 10-5, Th. 10-3:30, Fri. 10-7, Sat. 10-2. I truly appreciate your patronage and spreading the word about the shop to others! Rent is high…and though I sell on Amazon as well, sales in the shop are unpredictable with the weather, vacations etc. So, all sales are appreciated! As always, with any sale increment of $20 you can choose a free book from my specific selection. There are always books on reduced tables as well starting at $1. On one of my latest visits to my Darlin’ Dad, at Teresian House, he asked me what his “next step” should be? Since he can no longer read & retain, he has lost his favorite past time! I wish there were more volunteers available to read to our seniors. When I do read to Dad, I have to remind him that it isn’t a bedtime story as he closes his eyes to concentrate! Reading brings such joy to readers of all ages, please share that love of reading with your family. You lead by example. The reading of a “real” book is so different than reading an e-book. I think that the tactile event of turning pages, placing a book mark, holding a real book in your hands is magical. My eyes can only take so much of the digital page. I am now turning to “cheaters” at 1.00 to assist my eyes. I even have sunglass reading glasses that I take to the pool. In closing, I hope that I see you in the shop during the month of July! (The shop will be closed for 2 weeks in August, keep that in mind) May your summer be filled with great adventures, experiences, family, friends and some time to spend with a great book!
With this article published in the July Our Towne Bethlehem, half the year will be over already! What a crazy entrance into Summer it has been! The constant weather prediction of “a chance of showers”, “possibility of rain” and mixed clouds/sun seems like a roll of the dice for each day. No matter what the weather, though, it has been a great season for reading! Now that the children are out of school, don’t forget that Tattered Pages offers not only a great selection of children’s books, but all books are reduced in price over the “full price” stores. How wonderful it has been making friends with families who have just discovered my little shop! Tattered Pages has been here in the Glenmont Center Square for 10 years now!!! I am always amazed when people come in and say, I remember when you had cats in here! (I did foster cats with AnimaLovers from 20072009 and found 17 cats homes!) Those people are often astounded to hear that they still have “trade credits” in the shop after all those year. Yes, if you bring in no more than 6 books at a time, and they meet my criteria, you will receive credits that work like a coupon on your next purchase taking off an additional 20% off our already reduced prices! Remember, I also have all inventory on a database and can tell you, if you call ahead, if I have a book or not. I will gladly hold books behind the counter for you. I also order hard to find books, at a reduced price. Certain bookstores may tell you that the book is out of publication…I am always willing to do the search, use our credit card to order the book for you and hold it until you can come and pick it up! Since last month I have read “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman and am currently finishing “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. I also relaxed with a Northeast Bird Book by Peterson and “Monet’s Table” The cooking journals of painter Claude Monet. I also have a “pool” book in my swim bag which travels with me to the town park. I am re-reading “Heart-shaped Box” by Joe Hill which is Trish & Seamus a great ghost story in the vein of his father, Stephen King. National Lost Pet Prevention Month July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month. Many pets are displaced this month following firework displays, celebrations and thunderstorms. Over 10 million pets go missing annually and the majority of them tragically do not make it back home. You can take measures to ensure the safety and well-being of your dog or cat all year round so your pet does not join the ranks of lost animals. Below are a few suggestions for preventing pets from going missing, and ensuring they can make their way home if they do. *Make sure your pets have collars and legible tags. Collars can become worn or lose so check them often. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between your pet’s neck and collar; any more than that and it is too loose, any less and it is too tight. Ensure you can read all the information on your animal’s tag. Include your pet’s address and a contact number. Consider putting your pet’s veterinary office name and number on the tag as well. If the tag becomes scratched or worn or illegible, replace it. * Microchipping is an easy and proactive way to be reunited with a lost pet. Microchipping is a simple procedure (refer to last month’s article about microchipping). An inert chip that is the size of a grain of rice is injected under the skin similar to a vaccination. Unlike collars and tags which can slip off or become worn, microchips are permanent and can be scanned by any veterinarian, animal control officer or animal shelter. *Ensure your yard is secure. Drop to your pet’s level and examine the perimeter of your fence and gates and check for holes or loose fencing. Fix any problems immediately to keep your pet from getting loose and injured. Make sure your fencing is sturdy and tall enough to keep your pet contained. *Introduce yourself and your pet to your neighbors. If your neighbors know your pet, they can easily bring it home or alert you if it gets loose. *Train your pets to stay in the yard. If you have a pet that jumps the fence or rushes the door, work with a professional trainer to modify this behavior. * Keep pets in the house during firework displays and celebrations. Many pets become scared and their instinct is to run and hide when they hear loud noises. Being a proactive pet owner will ensure your pet’s happiness and safety. Vince Spinosa’s
Van Allen Farms By Susan E. Leath
As a youngster in the 1920s, Vincent Spinosa helped his father, mason Anthony Spinosa, heft the heavy blocks necessary to build his uncle Nick Ippolito’s meat market in Delmar. When Uncle Nick offered to teach Vincent the skills of a meat cutter, Vincent jumped at the chance. He had experienced the heavy labor of the masonry trade and thought he’d prefer his uncle’s line of work. Vincent Spinosa, known to one and all as Jim, was by all accounts an excellent butcher. Except for a short stint with the railroad, he managed the meat concessions at several local markets until 1967. That’s when he purchased Van Allen Farms on Route 9W in Glenmont. At the time, it was a simple farm stand. Jim transformed it into a store selling local produce, grocery mainstays and meats. In the summer of 1967, Jim Spinosa’s Van Allen Farms advertised ground chuck, extra lean, for 69 cents a pound, Long Island clams 3 dozen for $1.47, Heath Farms eggs for 43 cents a dozen and Hellmann’s mayonnaise for 59 cents for a quart jar. You’d find the store “200 yards north of Jericho Theater and ¼ mile south of Heath’s Dairy Farm.” Cover Photo: Vince and Michelle

Jim purchased the farm stand and about 20 acres from Kenneth Van Allen. Van Allen was part of the old Bethlehem Van Allen family who came here before the American Revolution. The Route 9W farmstead goes back at least to Kenneth’s grandparents, Mary and David Van Allen. That’s back when 9W was known as the Stone Road. Mary was a Creble, and her sister Margaret also married a Van Allen, James. It looks like David and James were cousins.

Kenneth and his father John ran a farm stand here for many years. 1950s era newspapers are full of ads for Van Allen Farms including Tomato Land where you could pick your own. Kenneth Van Allen also had a long career in real estate.

You may not see it in the greeting card section of your local drugstore, but August is “What Will Be Your Legacy Month.” So it’s a good time to think about the type of legacy you’d like to leave. Of course, “legacy” can mean many things. In the broadest sense, your legacy is how you will be remembered by your loved ones, friends and the communities to which you belong. On a practical level, establishing your legacy means providing your family and the charitable organizations you support with the resources you’d like them to have. And that means you may need to take the following actions: create your plans, communicate your wishes and review and update your documents. Let’s take a quick look at all these steps: Create your plans. You will want to work with your legal professional, and possibly your tax and financial professionals, too, to draft the plans needed to fulfill your legacy wishes. These plans may include drafting a will, living trust, health care directive, power of attorney and other documents. Ideally, you want these plans to do more than just convey where you want your money to go – you want to impart, to the next generation, a sense of the effort that went into building the wealth they receive. Without such an appreciation, your heirs may be less than rigorous in retaining the tangible legacies you’ve left them. Communicate your wishes. It’s important to communicate your legacy-related wishes to your family members as early as possible. By doing so, you can

hopefully avoid unpleasant surprises and hurt feelings when it’s time for your estate to be settled – and you’ll also let people know what tasks, if any, they need to perform. For example, if you’re choosing a family member to be the executor of your estate, or if you’re giving someone power of attorney over your financial or health-related matters, they should be prepared. Update your documents. During your life, you may well experience any number of changes – new marriage, new children, opening a family business, and so on. You need to make sure your legal documents and financial accounts reflect these changes. For example, if you’ve remarried, you may want to change the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts – if left untouched, these designations may even supersede the instructions left in your will. And the directions in life chosen by your grown children may also dictate changes in your will or living trust. In any case, it’s a good idea to review all your legacy-related documents periodically, and update them as needed. In addition to taking the above steps, you also need to protect the financial resources that go into your legacy. So, when you retire and begin taking funds from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts, make sure your withdrawal rate is sufficient for your living expenses, but not so high that it eventually jeopardizes the amounts you planned to leave to your family or to your preferred charities. A financial professional can help you determine the withdrawal rate appropriate for your situation. With careful planning, and by making the right moves, you can create the type of legacy you desire – one that can benefit your loved ones far into the future. Summer Sun and Protecting Your Skin It’s that that time of the year again. The snow has melted and the temperature is rising. While we no longer have to bundle up and pull out our mittens to go outside, summer is not without it’s own set of unique risks. Sun exposure may increase your risk of skin cancer, premature aging and sunburn. It is crucial to protect your skin against the harmful rays of the sun, especially when excessive time is spent outdoors. By learning more about the rays of the sun and how to protect yourself against them, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer worry free. What is the difference between UVA and UVB ultraviolet light? Ultraviolet light is a type of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, certain types of lasers, and sunlamps. There are two types of ultraviolet rays that contribute to sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging. They are ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. ◊ UVA rays make up 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the surface of the Earth. UVA radiation is present at equal intensity during all daylight hours of the day and can penetrate through windows, glass and clouds. ◊ UVB rays are the principal cause of sunburn from the sun. The intensity of UVB rays varies by location, time and season. The most significant amount of UVB rays are present between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM from the months April to October. How do I protect myself from Ultraviolet Rays? ◊ Avoid direct sunlight from the hours of 10 AM and 4PM ◊ Seek the shade when outside for longer periods of time ◊ Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps ◊ Wear protective clothing such as sleeved shirts, sunglasses that indicate 100% UV protection, and broad-brimmed hats ◊ Avoid burning ◊ Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 15 or higher when going outside *REMEMBER, clouds to not protect against UV rays, so applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen is important even on cloudy days ◊ Use at least one palm full of sunscreen when applying to the body at least thirty minutes before sun exposure *Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, nose, lips, back of neck, tops of feet and along the hairline

Reapply sunscreen every two hours during sun exposure and immediately after increased perspiration or swimming
What is SPF and which sunscreen should I use? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF indicates the ability of the sunscreen product to protect against sunburn. A common misbelief regarding SPF is that it is related to time of exposure. However, the intensity of ultraviolet rays are different throughout the day. SPF is related to the amount of sun exposure, rather than time of exposure. Sunscreens that have a SPF of 15 block approximately 93% of UVB, while SPF 30 blocks 96.7% and a sunscreen that is SPF 40 blocks 97.5% of UVB rays.
It is important to realize that SPF and sun protection is not proportional. This means that a sunscreen with SPF 20 does not provide twice as much protection as a SPF 10 sunscreen. Broad-spectrum sunscreens help protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen SPF is divided into four categories: 1. Low protection (SPF 6-10) 2. Medium protection (SPF 15-25) 3. High protection (SPF 30-50) 4. Very high protection (SPF 50+)
Certain ingredients on the label of sunscreens indicate broadspectrum protection. These ingredients include: benzophenones (oxybenzone), cinnamates (octinoxate, cinoxate), ecamsule (Mexoryl SX), sulisobenzone, salicylates, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and avobenzone (Parsol 1789). Look for these ingredients when buying a sunscreen to ensure optimal protection against both UVA and UVB rays. What common prescription medications may increase sun sensitivity? There are many prescription medications that may cause an increase in sun sensitivity, causing a higher tendency to burn. If taking a medication that may increase your sensitivity to sun, it is especially important to be cautious when going outdoors. These are some of the most common medications that increase sun sensitivity. It is important to consult your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects concerning your particular medications. ◊ Antibiotics: doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), azithromycin (Zithromax), metronidazole (Flagyl), sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim), sulfasalazine, sulfisoxazole ◊ Skin medications: adapalene gel (Differin), tretinoin topical (Retin-A, Renova), isotretinoin (Accutane), tazarotene (Tazorac) ◊ Antihistamines: Benadryl ◊ Cardiovascular: furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, amiodarone, nifedipine, quinidine, diltiazem ◊ Malaria medications: chloroquine, quinine, hydroxychloroquine ◊ Antifungals: itrazonazole, ketoconazole, terconazole, griseoflovin, flucytosine, voriconazole Sources: Sunscreens: achieving optimal protection. At the Bethlehem YMCA, we often say that we are much more than a gym. And if you look around our building, or around town, you will see it for yourself. The Bethlehem Y is a non-profit charitable organization that relies on the generosity of our members and the community to raise funds through our Annual Campaign. Through this campaign, the Y is able to ensure that our programs and services are available to the children and families in Bethlehem that need our help – and there are far more families in our community that need help than many people realize. The Bethlehem YMCA provides nurturing programs that bring families together. Come into the Y most any day and you’ll see parents and kids playing together. We have programs to nurture the potential in every child and teen, from day care to summer camp, from swim lessons to team sports, from Youth in Government to the Achievers program. Go out behind the building and you will see the biggest and best summer camp program in the area. Last year, thousands of kids had the best summer of their lives at the Bethlehem Y’s summer camp and almost 400 of them were only able to go to camp thanks to the generosity of people who donated to the Y’s Annual Campaign. The YMCA is the largest provider of day care services in the Capital District, including before and after school care. Last year, more than 500 children received assistance for school-age childcare at the Bethlehem Y. The Annual Campaign also funds the Y’s Circle of Champs program that provides vital support and respite for young children fighting life-threatening diseases, as well as for their families. Circle of Champs gives families the chance to focus on fun, rather than the next doctor’s appointment.
Kids at the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp are enjoying a new, expanded stage for skits and songs, as well as 13 new benches. Jeffrey Hansen of Boy Scout Troop 58 in Delmar, designed and built the stage and benches for his Eagle Scout project, with the assistance of other scouts in the troop.

World War I Table Top War Games July 23 and August 24
You are invited to participate in something completely different. Sunday, July 23rd, the Bethlehem Historical Association will host a World War I tabletop battle to coincide with their summer exhibition about Bethlehem's participation in that war a century ago. Players of any age (under 12 with an adult) should show up at the Cedar Hill School on Route 144, about 2 pm Sunday afternoon, to command a battleship of the US Navy, or one from the Imperial German High Seas Fleet. The ships are tiny, but the rules are easily learned, and give a very good idea of what battle in the mists and smoke of the North Sea was like.
