10 TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION

Chances are at some time in your life, you’ve made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and get healthy, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are ten tips to help you get started. 1. BE REALISTIC The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now. 2. PLAN AHEAD Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31st arrives. 3. OUTLINE YOUR PLAN Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or reminding yourself how your “bad” will affect your goal. 4. MAKE A “PROS” AND “CONS” LIST It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve.

5. TALK ABOUT IT Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case

scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other. 6. REWARD YOURSELF This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to eat a better diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend. 7. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for each five pounds lost. 8. DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time. 9. STICK TO IT Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient! 10. KEEP TRYING If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by mid-February, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

Battery

It's often more difficult for a battery to operate in cold weather than it is for a battery to operate in warm weather. As a result, a battery that's weak could turn into a dead battery during the winter. Our advice is to have a volt test performed on your battery to make sure it's still in good working order. If it isn't, buy a new battery as soon as possible so you'll never have to worry about being stranded or left in a cold parking lot with a car that won't start.

Coolant

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, is tremendously important to your car, as it keeps the engine from freezing in cold temperatures. Before you head out, make sure your car isn't low on coolant and that there aren't any leaks in your vehicle's engine that could cause coolant to drain out.

You might be wondering what gasoline and washer fluid could possibly have in common. The answer is that they're two automotive items you should try to keep full during the winter. You should keep your gas tank full for several reasons, like the fact that a full tank may prevent accumulated water from freezing inside your fuel pump and can help you stay warm by allowing the engine to stay running in case you get stuck. Meanwhile, a full windshield-washer reservoir is tremendously important, as messy road debris from a snowstorm can sometimes necessitate constant window washing to see where you're going.

Rivermen: The Welch Family of Van Wies Point

By Susan E. Leath

On a chill, early winter day, the Hudson River is not yet frozen, a dark gray band against the snow and bare tree limbs on the opposite shore. 100 plus years ago, the view from the Welch family home would be quite similar. Imagine William Welch, keeper of the Van Wies Point light, gazing out at the river anticipating the cold row necessary to hang the lantern that warned river traffic of the dangerous shoals near the Point. Today, the Hudson is dredged and ice cutters keep it open in the winter. Its extreme floods are controlled, its shores and islets are filled in, and its lighthouses are automated. Tamed perhaps, but still vital. Today, the Welch home still stands on Van Wies Point Road providing comfortable shelter to another family William Welch and his father Richard came to Van Wies Point from Saratoga in 1834. William was 17. Not too long after, he met and married Catherine Van Wie. Catherine was a descendant of the original Van Wie family that settled here in mid-1600s. Their first child, daughter Lydia, was born in 1840, son Warren followed in 1844 and finally daughter Jane in 1848.

This picture of the Welch’s Van Wies Point home was taken about 1900. If one sat in the chair on the porch, the Hudson River would be straight ahead past the gardens. p. 14

The headline for William Welch’s 1910 obituary is striking. It reads: Van Wie’s Light Keeper Is Dead William Welch Tended Beacon Which Warned River Navigators at Night for 52 Years During That Time He Never Left Van Wies’s Even for a Day. All this writer can say is “Wow.” That means he started tending the light at about 41 years of age. He would row out to the light every morning to retrieve the lantern, bring it back to shore, polish the lens and brass fittings, refuel it and then, as darkness settled in, row back out to hang out the lantern. Every day for 52 years. One report says he was paid $180 a year for this service. The obituary says that he performed his duties until he became ill two weeks before his death at age 94. (The obituary can be found in the September 8, 1910 issue of the Albany Evening Journal.) A look at the census data on William Welch throws a little bit of question into this story, but could also indicate the need for several occupations to put together a living. The 1850 census finds William Welch, boatman, and his wife Catherine living in Albany with their three children. Also in the household is Henry Van Wie, boatman. Henry Van Wie is almost certainly a relative of Catherine’s (perhaps a brother as he is age 42, while she is 32.) 1860 finds the family in Bethlehem. Interestingly, Henry Van Wie is listed as a lamp lighter, while William is listed as a carpenter and Catherine as a tailoress. In 1870, William works on a dredging machine, Catherine is keeping house and it is Henry who is listed as a “lamplighter on Hudson River.” It is not until the 1910 census, when William Welch was 92 years old, that he is finally listed as a lighthouse keeper. All this is a reminder that the census captures just a moment in time.

Over the years, changes have been made to the house, but the front porch still invites one to take a seat and enjoy the river view.

Passengers line the rails of the Albany, a steamship on the Hudson River Day Line. According to the Hudson River Maritime Museum, the Albany ran on the river from 1880 to 1930. The “floating palaces” of the Hudson River Day Line are well remembered by folks here in Bethlehem.

The men of the Welch family have a long history on the river. William and Catherine’s son Warren made a career with the Hudson River Day Line. When he retired, he was the chief engineer aboard the Hendrick Hudson. Two grandsons, Edward and Franklin also worked the river aboard various ships. At the time of William’s death, Edward was an assistant engineer aboard the Hendrick Hudson and Franklin was pilot of the tug Haley. William also had a brother, James Welch, who captained the steamship Norwich. The deed to 150 Van Wies Point Road describes three parcels in links and chains and the low water mark on the Hudson River. One parcel was conveyed to Warren Welch by William Welch in 1883, an indication of the property’s connection to the Welch family. It stayed in the family until Emily Welch, wife of Franklin Harlan Welch who was a great grandson of William, sold it in 1992. The home was probably built about 1870 for Warren and Teresa Welch. A charming newspaper clipping from the “Society Echoes” column notes that Mrs. Warren Welch hosted a dinner party at her home, “Brierwood cottage on the Hudson,” that was followed by a “delightful musical evening.” (Albany Times Union, July 29, 1903.) Charles and Clare Lowery bought the property in 2015 and enjoy living in their cozy home on the Hudson River with its sweeping views and historic connection the Welch family.

In the background of this undated view of the church, one can see the District 14 one room school building.

In this photo Warren (seated in center) and Teresa Welch (standing behind him) are surrounded by their family. On the left are son Edward Welch and his wife Margaret and two of their children, Margaret in her father’s arms and young Warren in front. Standing to the right of Teresa are their children Arabella and Frank. Seated on right is daughter-in-law Emma Welch who was married to their son William.

Train Your Pet Month It is only a few days into 2018 and you may be hard at work trying to keep your New Year’s resolutions. You’re working out at the gym or making a tighter budget. This January, National Train Your Dog Month, you should also make a resolution to enrich your canine companion’s life with an education in etiquette. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) began their National Train Your Dog Month campaign in January 2010, hoping to raise awareness about the importance of proper pet training and healthy socialization for a dog’s well-being. Why the month of January? Many dogs and puppies are adopted or purchased around the holidays. Unfortunately, a number of those dogs are subsequently relinquished to animal shelters or abandoned. Training could be the one thing that makes or breaks a dog’s chance to stay with his family and in their home. Behavioral issues are one of the top reasons dogs are relinquished to animal shelters. Maybe the dog is hyperactive or destructive; or perhaps he’s fearful, shy, or behaving aggressively. Often it is not because they’re bad dogs — it’s because they haven’t yet been given the appropriate tools they need in order to know how to be good dogs. Inexperienced owners might try temporary fixes that may actually exacerbate the problems — isolation from the house and family, yelling, shock collars or worse. By the time these dogs end up at a shelter, they’re confused and ill-equipped for life in a home. Therefore, January is the perfect month to remind pet parents, both new and experienced, to take the time to train their furry friends. With consistency, well-timed praise and rewards, a level head, a lot of practice, and the guidance of an experienced dog-training professional, you and your pooch will be learning and growing all year long. Interested in finding the perfect dog trainer for you and your canine companion? Take the time to do your research. Ask your veterinarian or a trusted local rescue organization to see what trainer they would recommend. When you locate a dog trainer, ask them if you could sit in on one of their classes. While there, take time to observe a few of things: p. 16

Do the dogs seem happy? Their owners? Try to chat with some of the owners after class to get their overall impression of working with the trainer. What kind of skills will be covered over the duration of the class? Does the instructor emphasize socialization in his or her class? Do the canine participants get a chance to interact with one another? Does the training facility seem like a safe and secure environment for you and your dog? Does the facility seem clean, sanitary? Does the trainer require proof of vaccinations to ensure your dog will join a healthy class? Does the trainer use positive reinforcement techniques and denounce any sort of physical punishment? Talk with the trainer to get an idea of his or her training philosophy.

B

Training your dog is not only beneficial; it’s also a lot of fun. Dogs thrive on mental stimulation — they love the chance to learn and practice something new. Your dog will enjoy the opportunity to bask in your undivided attention as you work toward a common goal together. Time spent training is time spent building a strong relationship between you and your dog. Happy and healthy 2018 to you and your pets! FINANCIAL FOCU$ How Can You Improve Your Financial Fitness This Year?

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get healthier, you may already be taking the necessary steps, such as improving your diet and increasing your exercise. Of course, physical fitness is important to your well-being – but, at the same time, don’t forget about your financial fitness. Specifically, what can you do to ensure your investment situation is in good shape? Here are a few “healthy living” suggestions that may also apply to your investment portfolio:

Build endurance – Just as exercise can help build

your endurance for the demands of a long life, a vigorous investment strategy can help you work toward your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. In practical terms, this means you will need to own some investments with the potential to provide long-term growth. These are the investments that, ideally, you can hold on to for decades and eventually reap the benefits of capital appreciation. Of course, growth-oriented investments, such as most types of stocks, will rise and fall in value over the short term, and there’s no guarantee of profits, or even preserving principal. But if you choose wisely, and you’ve got the patience and discipline to hold on to your investments through the market’s ups and downs, you may well be rewarded.

Maintain an ideal “weight” – You can help yourself stay healthy by maintaining your ideal weight. This can be challenging – as you know from the recently finished holiday season, it’s easy to put on a few extra pounds. And, just as inadvertently, your portfolio can tack on some unneeded weight, too, in the form of redundant investments. Over time,

with Jerry Pittz

you may have picked up too many similar investment vehicles, resulting in an overconcentration, or “flabbiness,” that can work against you, especially when a market downturn affects the asset class in which you’re overloaded. So, you might be better off liquidating some of your duplicate, or near-duplicate, investments, and using the proceeds to help broaden your investment mix.

Get proper rest – Many studies have shown that we

need adequate rest to stay alert and healthy. In your life, you’ve probably already found that if you over-tax your body, you pay a price in your overall well-being. If you look at your investment portfolio as a living entity – which, in a way, it is, as it certainly provides life to your goals and aspirations – then you can see that it, too, can be weakened by stress. And one of the main stress factors is excessive trading. If you’re constantly buying and selling investments in an attempt to boost your returns, you may rack up hefty fees, commissions and taxes – and still not really get the results you wanted. Plus, if you’re frequently moving in and out of different investments, you’ll find it hard to follow a unified, long-term strategy. So, confine your trading to those moves that are really essential – and give your portfolio a rest.

To enjoy your life fully, you’ll want to take care of your physical and financial health – and, as it turns out, you can make similar types of moves to help yourself in both areas.

As I write this, I am still shaking my head over the fact that some people had asked Rich, one of my Glenmont Postmen, if I liked to ski? Ski? He said, that they thought that maybe I was playing hooky during those times that my shop was closed in December! Wow! Really, skiing! My boys and grandkids would be laughing over that one! Though I am an incredible snow sculptor, I have only cross country skied and not lately. The shop was closed more times than I ever expected since mid-October for a variety of reasons. As you know, I had both eyes operated on for cataracts in October & November. The right eye has posed a particular challenge in the recuperation…but seems to be mending now. I can see in the distance like a hawk! But up close, I need just a minor adjustment of .50+ for computer and 1.0+ for books, even that may improve. I do need blublockers for glare, which is a bit of a change. In December the shop was closed while I spent time with my husband in his, I think I will retire from work with a bang! He spent a week in St. Peter’s, hence the shop closed. If you know him, don’t tell him that you read anything about that here! My Darlin’ Dad, who will be 89 on Jan. 16th, was off to St. Peter’s with double pneumonia and complications on December 18-22, hence the shop closed again. Timing of this certainly didn’t help with Holiday Shopper’s hours. I do thank all of you who did come out for our very successful Jewelry Extravaganzas and the two book signings with local teacher/coach, Jesse Braverman. His memoir, “Comeback Coach” is a wonderfully, inspirational book of more than just Baseball! Sitting back and watching former students, baseball players, parents, families come in to spend time with Jesse and get an autographed copy of his book, was one of my highlights of owning Tattered Pages! My son, Matt, played Jesse Ball, BCHS ball and Mickey Mantle baseball with Coach Braverman. Jesse’s special magic, lies within who Jesse is! This book was written after his childhood friend, renowned author Gordon Sander, advised him to chronicle his life, to write it down as a cathartic way of handling his largest disappointment ever! Many of you may be aware of the incident, many of you may just know Jesse as an inspiring, dedicated teacher and coach: he lays it out in this memoir. As a special education teacher, Jesse applied his skills, his knowledge and his patience to working with these young ballplayers. He always made my son feel appreciated and part of a team effort. My son, a left handed catcher, didn’t always start… but he always played! He never forgot that, or the lessons of fair play, teamwork and values. My boy has been almost 20 years with the 82nd Airborne, and the lessons learned from Jesse he has tried to apply, when applicable, to his life as a leader and parent. And, I ,for one, am glad to have had my child work with Jesse. I never imagined that so many years later, our paths would cross again. It is my pleasure to have hosted Jesse and continue to sell his book in my shop! (There are still autographed copies here for sale.)

As this New Year approaches I reflect upon the many books & authors that filled up part of 2017. I am so glad to have found Alex Grecian, the author of the Scotland Yard Murder Mysteries. I have now read 3 of his wonderful historical fiction based mysteries. I have learned more about the real life of those who lived in the late 1800s; the lifestyle of those in post “Jack the Ripper” England, the life of those who lived in the coal communities of Wales, and the beginning of forensic science in crime solving. His books do remind me of “The Alienist” series by Caleb Carr set in 1896 New York City, when Teddy Roosevelt was Chief of Police! I strongly recommend you read this book before the TV series begins. I loved that these books, and the series, are based in fact featuring a murder team, which includes brothers Detectives Marcus & Lucius Isaacson, Dr. Lazlo Kreizler (psychiatrist/alienist), journalist John Moore, and Sara Harper first woman in the police department to rise to detective! I am also glad that I had the opportunity to read Stephen King’s Bill Hodges’ Trilogy from cover to cover! I hope that in 2018 you will all be blessed with good health, prosperity, family, friends, great books and perhaps a loving pet to cuddle with while you read. My little Seamus has made so many friends over the years both here at the shop and at The Teresian House. We are coming up on our 7th “Gotcha Day” in late January. My official store greeter, who is 13 ½ will have been my Seamus (birth name: Spanky’s Little Red Rascal) for 7 years! In closing, I want to thank the over 2,500 visitors to Tattered Pages for coming thru our doors this year! The life of small business is within those who take the time to shop local, shop small. You support us thru word of mouth and by your return patronage. I know that there is competition out there, much coming from online shopping, fancier shops, bigger box stores but I pledge to do my best to offer the best service, selection, value, experience, 20% off trade credits and adorable greeter dog, for the upcoming year. An additional 10 customers a month, for me, brings not only job security, bills paid, but new friends to be made and books to find just the right home. Happy New Year!

YMCA ANNUAL CAMPAIGN MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES

It’s a very close-knit group of children, their parents, and their brothers and sisters. Thanks to the Bethlehem YMCA, they get together regularly to play, talk, and have fun. In July, they go to YMCA summer camp. A few weeks ago, they celebrated Christmas together at a wonderful party. In between gatherings, their lives are focused on doctor visits, hospital stays, treatments and surgeries. These families have a tight bond forged by shared experiences that often make life a day-to-day struggle. The YMCA’s Circle of Champs program provides respite for families with a child dealing with a life-threatening illness. This program lets families focus on fun time together rather than the next medical appointment. Circle of Champs makes a huge difference in their lives and it’s only possible because of donations to the Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign. A group of active older adults gets together in the spinning room at the Bethlehem YMCA’s wellness center. However, they are not as active as they wish. Parkinson’s disease has robbed them of their ability to move freely. For many who participate in the Bethlehem YMCA’s Pedaling for Parkinson’s program, that one hour in the Y spin room is the only relief they get from the symptoms and they are grateful. Pedaling for Parkinson’s makes a huge difference in their quality of life and it’s only possible because of donations to the Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign.

These are just three examples of how the Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign makes a difference in people’s lives. Your donations helped about three thousand individuals and families last year and there is an inspiring story for every dollar. For Bethlehem YMCA members, your monthly dues pays for operating costs, personnel, and other expenses such as insurance. Your donations to the Annual Campaign, which runs from January to the end of March, enable the Y to keep its promise that no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay. And every penny donated stays right in Bethlehem. With your help, every day the YMCA provides safe, welcoming care to children whose parents, have lost their jobs, to adults battling diseases, and to seniors who have no family of their own, and rely on the Y for fellowship. Every day, you are helping the Bethlehem YMCA make a real difference in people’s lives and in our community. Thousands of people are depending on the Bethlehem YMCA and we are depending on you. The Y is much more than a gym. It is a not-for-profit charity. Our mission is to nurture youth development, encourage healthy living, and foster social responsibility. We can only achieve our mission with your help. Please donate to the Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign. Our volunteers will be reaching out to Y members and our community. You can make a pledge at the Y front desk, or donate on-line at cdymca.org. Thanks for your support.

A family escapes terror and murder in Afghanistan to start a new life in Bethlehem. Grandmother, mom, and children find help from the YMCA. Help with housing, with education, obtaining sewing machines to make products to sell, giving the children a chance to learn to swim and play soccer. For this family of refugees, volunteers at the Bethlehem YMCA make a huge difference in their lives and it’s only possible because of donations to the Bethlehem YMCA’s Annual Campaign.
