FINANCIAL FOCU$ What’s Smarter – Paying Off Debts or Investing? It probably doesn’t happen as much as you’d like, but you may occasionally have some extra disposable income. For example, perhaps you have recently received, or will soon receive, a year-end bonus. Or maybe you will get a sizable tax refund in just a few months. Wherever this money comes from, you will want to put it to good use. Should you use the cash to pay down debts or should you invest it instead? There’s no simple answer, and everyone’s situation is different, but here are a few suggestions for helping you make a good choice: Evaluate your cash flow. If you already have enough cash to meet your daily living expenses, you might lean toward investing the money, but if you are just getting by, possibly due to heavy debt payments, then you might be better off using your newfound funds to reduce your debt load. Another way of possibly reducing your debt load is to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, lowrisk account. Once you have such a fund, you could use it, instead of going into debt, to pay for unexpected costs, such as a new furnace or a major car repair. Evaluate your debts. Some of your debts are actually more “expensive” to you than others. This expense level doesn’t necessarily refer to the size of the debt, however. You might have a large mortgage, for instance, but because your interest payments are typically tax deductible, your “aftertax” interest rate may be relatively modest. Therefore, you might consider using your excess cash for investments, rather than paying down your mortgage. But if you have consumer loans or credit cards that carry a high interest rate and whose interest payments are not deductible, you might be better off paying down this debt.

with Jerry Pittz

Evaluate your investment opportunities. You may have heard that one season or another is a “better” time to invest – but there’s really no strong evidence to support this claim. However, now that we are nearing the end of the calendar year, and only a few months away from the taxfiling deadline on April 15, you may want to take advantage of at least one time-related investment opportunity. Specifically, you could use whatever extra money you have to fully fund your IRA, if you haven’t done so already. For the 2018 tax year, you can contribute $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you are 50 or older. (Depending on your income, you may not be able to contribute the full amount to a Roth IRA.) You’ve got until the April 15 deadline to fully fund your IRA, but if you have the money sooner, why wait? The quicker it’s in your account, the faster it can go to work for you. One final suggestion: If you have a company match as part of your 401(k) or similar retirement plan at work, consider contributing enough to get your employer’s full matching contribution before you pay down debts – don't leave this “free money” on the table. Your year-end bonus, tax refund or other source of beyondthe-paycheck money can help you make progress toward your financial goals – so evaluate your situation and options carefully before making any moves. It will be time well spent.

Please help your Bethlehem neighbor! Bethlehem

Dear Neighbor, Since 1942, the purpose of the Bethlehem Community Fund has been to provide temporary financial assistance to Bethlehem Town residents who face emergency needs not covered by other agencies or sources. Formerly known as the Bethlehem Festival Fund, our nonprofit treats all requests with confidentiality. Bethlehem School District personnel, local clergy, Bethlehem Senior Services and other service providers make most of the requests for assistance.

Community Fund neighbors helping neighbors since 1942

Assistance is given anonymously with the utmost respect for the pride and privacy of the recipients. This is a long-standing tradition of the Bethlehem Community Fund.

Funds are used to help individuals, families and students with short-term needs such as medical expenses, utility bills, auto/home repairs, school-related expenses and other costs that arise from unforeseen hardships. The Fund has experienced an increase in requests this year and we anticipate a record number of individuals and families needing assistance this winter. Our 2018 Holiday fundraising goal of $30,000 will make it possible for us to meet many of the needs of our Bethlehem neighbors throughout the upcoming year.

Your gift will touch the lives of our neighbors in the Bethlehem community. Warmest regards, Board of Trustees and Officers Bethlehem Community Fund President: Paul Gutman, 518-655-0106 V President: John Guastella, 518-598-3434

Then

& Now

John Comstock and Bethlehem Center By Susan E. Leath

What do you think of when you are sitting in traffic at the intersection of 9W and Feura Bush Road? Let your mind drift back to when this was a quiet, country hamlet known as Bethlehem Center. You could even imagine back the 1840s and 50s when this was known as Babcock Corners after prominent land owner Bethlehem Center’s one room schoolhouse is seen here about Joshua Babcock. 1925 when the new school in the background was built. Imagine the one room school, District No.7, which was right in front of Bethlehem Preschool. The building that houses Akira restaurant used to be a hotel run by Mr. Haswell. A little further north was another hotel, G. R. Mosher’s. Across the street (the Price Chopper corner) was a blacksmith shop and wheel wright. There has been a gas station on the other corner since 1941.

not durable and was soon replaced by other materials including crushed stone. Old deeds and documents refer to 9W as the Stone Road.

The tollgate building straddled the road. The wood frame structure consisted of a house on one side for the gatekeeper and a storage shed or barn on the other with the roadway in the middle. Those traveling the road stopped at the gate, under the Another feature of this crossroads was the tollgate shelter of the connecting roof, and paid their toll: building located a little further south from the modern six cents for a carriage drawn by two horses, twelve gas station. From here on southward, 9W was part of cents for a four-horse coach or stage. Mrs. Babcock the South Bethlehem Plank Road. Incorporated in was the first gatekeeper. She also kept the post office July of 1851, the plank road went to Beckers Corners in the building and ran a candy counter. By 1906, the (where there was another tollgate) before heading road had been taken over by Albany County and the southwest into the hamlet of South Bethlehem (then company dissolved. No more tolls were collected. known as Jaynes Corners.) The initial capital raised was $12,000, and the first directors were John B. After the toll company closed, John Martin, who Vanderzee, Barent S. Winne, Philip Kimmey, James operated a blacksmith shop at the corner, acquired Schoonmaker and John A. Sickles. John Soop was the property and buildings. He disconnected them secretary/ treasurer. Originally, the road was literally and moved them back from the road creating a rental “paved” with planks of wood. However, wood was property. In 1941, his nephew, John Comstock along with John’s wife Loretta Degenaar, took over the property. John and Loretta’s substantial renovations created a warm home in the larger structure and a carriage barn in the smaller. About the same time, John opened a gas filling station in his uncle’s former shop. John Comstock was an accomplished builder beginning his career as an apprentice carpenter in 1925 at age 18. At the same time, he began substitute work for the Post Office. Over the years, John built many houses in the Delmar/Glenmont area including the first house constructed on Fernbank Avenue in 1929. In 1958 when John was appointed Postmaster of the Glenmont office (a position he held until 1972), he gave an interview to the Knickerbocker News. He said that he built 45 homes during his “building years.” Look for “T Gate” in this portion of the 1866 Beers map. p. 12

Years later in 1981, John Comstock was interviewed again by a reporter from the Knickerbocker News. He spoke about the old turnpike road, the many historic

artifacts in his private museum and the changes he had seen at the four corners in Bethlehem Center. “A lot of things have changed in these few years,” said Comstock, remembering construction of a new shopping center, two gas stations and a car wash. “Not too many of the old neighbors are left,” said the former postmaster, who served in a post office in the same buildings as the family gas station and grocery store. One wonders what John would say about the changes that have happened in Bethlehem Center in the last 37 years!

PS: You might be curious to know that John Comstock’s private museum was located in the former tollgate building. This building was donated to the Bethlehem Historical Association and moved to the grounds of the Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum in 1988. The Comstock’s house, also part of the tollgate building, was torn down in 1989.

This view of Comstock’s gas station, circa 1947, looks down Feura Bush Road. The first white house in the distance on the right is still standing today (number 381, built in 1947 for the Heilmann family.) p. 13

Canterbury Vet Holiday pet gift safety A recent study showed that 95% of pet owners purchase holiday gifts for their pets. Pets adore gifts just as much as we do (even if your cat prefers the box the gift came in). However, not all gifts are appropriate for pets. In fact, some may present hidden dangers. If finding the perfect present for your four legged friend is on your shopping list this holiday season, be sure to prioritize safety as well. Here are a few tips to help you decide if a gift is safe for your pet. Avoid the following perilous pet presents: -Toys with eyes, buttons, or other small parts that can be torn or chewed off -Anything string related, whether it’s yarn, ribbon, gift wrapping, or toys that contain stringy material -Bones, antlers, and rawhide chews which can splinter or be ripped into smaller pieces and be choking hazards or fracture teeth - Items containing toxic chemicals or fillers -Toys too small for your pet’s size, breed, and type, which could pose a choking hazard - Any items that can be easily torn or chewed into pieces or break apart easily or become sharp - Plush toys containing plastic “squeaky” centers The best way to avoid possible problems is to focus on the specific needs of your pet and what may be most enticing to him or her. For example, if they are prone to eating or destroying everything, you’ll want to explore some extra durable toy options. Now that you’ve considered the possible problems some toys may present, let’s take a look at all the awesome, safe gifts that are available. The following are some recommendations for toys that are safe for your pet.

For dogs:

Nylabone or other safe dental chew toys endorsed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council Kong-type rubber toys (available in multiple sizes and durabilities) Canine agility course for the backyard Size-appropriate, indestructible stuffed toys that do not contain small pieces or plastic inserts Soft/floppy Frisbee (no broken teeth!) or fetch toys appropriately sized for your dog Food puzzles or games

For cats:

Catnip or catnip-filled toys (without beads, feathers, or other attachments) Cat Dancer Laser toy Perches and cat trees Interactive food puzzles Scratching posts Crinkly plush bag or pet cube With cats, you can also just save some of your leftover cardboard boxes for hours of fun. p. 14

Most importantly, don’t forget that simply spending time with your pet can be the best gift of all. Commit to spending at least 30 minutes each day interacting with your furry pal. The time will be well-spent for both of you and will encourage better health and well-being. As always, don’t hesitate to call and ask your veterinarian any questions or concerns about toys that are safe for your pet.

ALBANY DOCTORS HELP RELIEVE Upper Back PAIN! Hey Folks, meet Ali! Ali was experiencing neck/upper back pain which caused tingling and pain to radiate into her right arm and hand. She reported that anytime she took a deep breath in, the pain would get worse. She experienced pain with each movement and she was having trouble sleeping. Her pain was very problematic for her photography business. Her mom, a current patient at Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, recommended that she make an appointment. After a thorough consultation, examination, and x-rays, Dr. Seaver was able to confirm Ali’s diagnosis! Ali had a rib that was misaligned in the upper portion of her back. This is a diagnosis that is commonly missed since most health care professionals don’t correct osseous misalignments. A misaligned rib can cause sharp and excruciating pain with symptoms that radiate into the arms. Dr. Seaver performed chiropractic adjustments specific to rib misalignments to help get Ali on her way to feeling better. After 3 treatments, Ali’s pain had decrease significantly, and she was able to sleep better, continue her photography career at Alexandria Marie Photography, and get back to living her life! At Kinkaid Family Chiropractic, there are two providers, Dr. Jessica Kinkaid and Dr. Ashley Seaver. Both of our providers have helped many patients with rib misalignments. If you know anyone with similar symptoms, please tag them in hopes of helping them.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Seasons Greetings Constant Readers, As another year comes to an end, I am a bit more reflective than usual. I have many family members and beloved friends pass away this year, starting with my Darlin' Dad at the age of 89. I have mentioned before that I have now come to view life like an incredible book! With some you can see that there are just a few chapters left, others end suddenly leaving you wondering and wandering about a bit trying to make sense of it. It is difficult going on with our "ordinary" life when they are no longer a part of it. Some of my dear friends did want the formality that often follows death. It is hard when you struggle with closure. I have found comfort in my memories and even sharing with family and friends little anecdotes and personal experiences. Books often can bring comfort or a way of escaping as you process this change in your life. I found great comfort in the poem by Linda Ellis. My Uncle Frank's granddaughter read this as we reflected upon his all too short life! : "He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars… the house… the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash." This had a great impact on many. We pondered the words of Psalm 23, Paul's Letter to the Corinthian's on love and a reflection given by his daughter, my cousin Tammy. For the last chapter, last pages, last words of love were spent with his family wondering why his parents and his big sister, my Mom, hadn't come for him yet. No one wanted Frank's journey on earth to be over, but no one wanted him to struggle with his earthly confines of pain, fear & confusion. The written word, which has comforted so many others, also comforted us as we made it personal. Took those words and applied it to someone we loved personally. In this Holiday Season, books often bring us back to a simpler time with the wonderful smells from the kitchen, fir trees, crackling fires in the fireplace, peppermint, ginger, and cinnamon filling the air. I have been overwhelmed with the number of customers who have come in to purchase Christmas books for their young ones, Holiday Romances and stories of times long ago! Tattered Pages has tried to connect each shopper with just what they are searching for. Small Business Saturday was an incredible success! I loved making new friends and giving all an additional 15% off their purchases. I will be offering special discounts during the Holiday shopping season. On Dec. 1st and Dec. 15th I will be hosting "Designs by Dana" here in the shop. Dana Flint, a founding vendor at the Delmar Farmer's Market will be here with hundreds of her unique, affordable jewelry and handpoured candles. She will be assisted on Dec. 1st by my granddaughter, Trinity, who will be selling unique items on her own as well. All book sales will be 15% off as well! The jewelry sale is 11-4 on 12/1 and 12/15. We would love to see you then! A recent report on television stated a resurgence in book stores sales! People are returning to the published p. 28

book, over e-books. The report stated that many people wish to browse the stacks, the genres, and hold the book in their hand. Not all books are as affordable on e-book over the price in a next to new store such as Tattered Pages. Remember if you are part of the trade credit program, you always get a discount of an additional 20% long as you have the credits to back that up. You can bring in 6 books and up to 12 children's books to earn the credit. Of course, it goes without saying, books must be resellable, clean and free of dirt and odor. Recent additions in the shop have been books in the classic Literature section, children's section, mysteries and romance. There is a nice selection of cookbooks and craft books that look brand new. You never know what I am going to have on the shelves, for it always varies and surprises me when readers bring them in. I would love to help you gather the books to go into a personalized gift bag or basket. Last Christmas I gave my youngest son a series of cookbooks with the necessary food items to make many of the recipes. You could make a gift basket of romance novels, a candle and a bottle of wine. You could gather together kids books with popcorn, hot cocoa etc. Craft books with some materials for that craft. Just use your imagination and how well you know the recipient of your gift...I will help you with the book aspect. Don't assume I don't have a book or a series, give a call (518-447-9910) and I will look for you. All of the shop inventory is on a database, and I do know my inventory well. About 17,000 books in shop currently and many of them are newly published! If you are ever told that a book is out of print, and can't be ordered, call me. I have been able to procure books for people that may seem hard to find. I only keep a small fee for myself in this case. I will order books and DVDs for you if you wish. So as we head into this Holiday Season, and the New Year ahead, please don't forget how books can enhance your life and the life of your loved ones. Though I don't buy books, I still offer a great trade credit deal that would build you up to 20% off the price of books you purchase in the shop. No more than 6 books and 12 children's books. * During this Winter season, remember that I follow the Bethlehem School District snow code. If they are closed, so am I. In the matter of delay or early dismissal I follow the same. I always note that on Facebook: Tattered Pages, LLC. I would love to see you this Holiday Season...to all of you good health, happiness and a good book! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages (est. 2006) at 365 Feura Bush Rd. Glenmont, NY Open M:10-3, T,W 10-5, Th., Fri 10-6, Sat. 10-2

This year our talented team explores the theme “Over the River and Through the Woods” in their Christmas decorations. Come and experience the museum as you’ve never seen it before at one of the following events. All are free and open to the public. Sunday, December 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. is our Annual Holiday Silver Tea. A BHA tradition for over 30 years, enjoy sweets and treats and, of course, hot tea and coffee. Stop by Monday, December 3 from 3 to 7 p.m, or Sunday, December 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. for our Holiday Open House. Sweets and treats and festive punch combine for an enjoyable afternoon. The Cedar Hill Schoolhouse Museum is located at 1003 River Road, Selkirk.
