Spring Home Checklist

After a long, dark winter, spring's bright sun and warm winds are, well, a breath of fresh air. The only downside? All that sunshine spotlights your leaf-filled gutters, cracked sidewalks and the dead plants in last year's flower beds. Dwight Barnett, a certified master inspector with the American Society of Home Inspectors, shared this checklist to help you target the areas that need maintenance so you can get your chores done quickly, leaving you time to go outside and play in the sunshine. •Check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to water in the basement or crawl space. Make sure downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of debris. •Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects.

•Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring rains do more damage to the exposed wood.

then seal the concrete. •Remove firewood stored near the home. Firewood should be stored at least 18 inches off the ground at least 2 feet from the structure.

•From the ground, examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. If your home has an older roof covering, you may want to start a budget for replacement. The summer sun can really damage roof shingles. Shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. Flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys need to be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.

•Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb or finger over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it is likely the pipe inside the home is damaged and will need to be replaced. While you're at it, check the garden hose for dry rot.

•Examine the exterior of the chimney for signs of damage. Have the flue cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep. •Inspect concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. All exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home's foundation. Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk. When weather permits, power-wash and

•Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Clean coils operate more efficiently, and an annual service call will keep the system working at peak performance levels. Change interior filters on a regular basis. •Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yardwork easier.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, Never put off to tomorrow what you can read today! I realize that it is often hard fitting in time to read. So many people’s lives are just full…full of the important things that can sometimes exhaust a person by the end of the day. Like many, I turn to the television, especially this winter when I have been a bit off balance due to upper respiratory infection. My head too stuffed to think… it was easier to just get comfy and watch TV and then fall asleep when possible. Making time to read for many, takes planning or carving out time. Rainy days are so conducive to reading. When newly married, we lived in the mother-in-law apartment on a dairy farm in Barto, PA. Our bedroom sat above the calving pen, which made for very interesting interruption to our sleep, as the new calves came into the world! I didn’t have a job at that time and for the first time I was far from home, phone calls were long distance and cost more, so, needless to say, I had to find a way to fill my time. Even with rabbit ears (what are those?) TV was full of static! So to pass the time, I read. I would find a kitten from the barn (which was strictly forbidden by my husband) check it for fleas & mites, and if cleared…they came in to cuddle with me as I read my next Stephen King or Dean Koontz. On a rainy day I would bake brownies or perhaps a loaf of oatmeal bread and settle in on the couch for a few chapters while they baked. The adventure of a good book is like a “staycation”…it whisks you away to another place, another time where you can vicariously live through the words of the author! I have always been one who loves “input” like the robot, Johnny Five, in the 1986 movie, “Short Circuit”, I can entertain myself with an almanac, encyclopedia or even dictionary. I love what reading does to my brain and how it processes. I often drift off, imagining what I have recently read when I am falling off to sleep. In many ways books have been like friends over the years. There are some that I have read more than once. There are some that still make me smile when I think of when I read them…I often can remember in what location I was when I read them. I know my “Maine” summer books, I recall my winter “in the bookshop” books. I fondly remember the books which I read aloud to my 5th grade students over the years. I still find these to be in my top 100, and although I read them to 10 year olds, they are still some of my favorite literature. If you haven’t read these, I strongly recommend the following” “Maniac Magee”, “Hatchet”, “The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe”, “Tuck Everlasting”, “Bridge to Terabithia”, “The Whipping Boy”, “Danny Champion of the World”, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and “Sarah, Plain and Tall” . As I have noted before, I have come to love these contemporary pieces by Swedish authors lately. Frederick Backman, who wrote “A Man Called Ove” started me off. These books, which are realistic fiction, are filled with humor, dilemma and friendship. You learn so much about Swedish society through these books. Certain book clubs in the area have also read by Backman; “My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She is Sorry”, “Britt Marie Was Here”,

“The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” by Rachel Joyce and the latest “The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” by Jonus Jonusson. I loved this book so much! It is a geriatric, Swedish version of Forrest Gump with the most lovable senior citizen ever! I watched the Swedish film, with sub-titles, a great adaptation of the book! My latest book was a bit of a palate cleanser…for it was a non-fiction piece entitled, “The Secret Lives of the U.S. Presidents: Strange Stories and Shocking Trivia from Inside the White House” by Cormac O’Brien. Fascinating information in a very easy to read format. Great example of a book that you could read just a little at a time, whenever. I am currently reading “Hitman Anders and the Meaning of it All” another book by Jonas Jonasson. I am thoroughly this Swedish bit of realistic farce! Please come out on Saturday, April 8th to our next Jewelry Extravaganza featuring one of a kind jewelry by Dana Flint, one of the founding vendors of the Delmar Farmer’s Market. We will be featuring her very affordable sterling silver wire earrings with high end beads, Swarovski crystals…as well as wrapped wire jewelry, rings, and pendants. Starting under $10…these would make great Easter or Mother’s Day presents! The show will be from 11-4. There will also be many book specials as well in the shop. With every earring purchase you will receive an additional 10% off all book purchases! Trish and Seamus celebrate their birthdays in April and would love to have you take advantage of our special sale to commemorate these events. Since Seamus is

turning 13 on April 17th…there will be an additional 13% off all sales on April 17th! Trish’s birthday is the April 27th…15% more will come off of all sales on that day as her gift to you! I would like to thank all of you who frequent Tattered Pages on a regular basis. Your patronage to this shop means the world to me. As a small business owner, there are so many variables that go into monthly sales. Thank you for remembering that we are here. Thanks to all who frequent my Facebook page: Tattered Pages, LLC (the one with Trinity holding Seamus in front of the shop) and liking and sharing my page. Word of mouth is the best advertising…so keep spreading the word. We have been in this location since June 2007…and I appreciate your support! Until next month…remember the adventure of a good book…and spread the word! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages at 365 Feura Bush Rd. in the Glenmont Center Square # 518-447-9910, mytatteredpages@gmail.com Open M,T,W 10-5, Th. 10-6, Fri. 10-7, Sat. 10-2 closed Sun.

Ask the

Canterbury Vet Animal Abuse

Domestic Violence Awareness Gandhi said “the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” The Humane Society of the United States has marked the third week in April as Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness week. Multiple studies have documented links between the abuse of animals and violence against people. In one such study, of individuals arrested for animal crimes, 65% had been arrested for battery against another person. Pet abuse is one predictor of domestic partner violence. Pets are often the first victims of domestic violence. In both domestic violence and child abuse situations, abusers may manipulate and control their human victims through threatened or actual violence against family pets. Researchers have documented that as many as 83% of women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their partners also abused or killed a family pet. Another study found that families under supervision for physical abuse of their children, pet abuse was concurrent in 88% of those families. Batterers often use the family pet to threaten and intimidate children, spouses and elderly family members. Just like children, pets need a safe place to live. Unfortunately, many in domestic violence situations delay leaving the house because they fear for their pets’ safety. Animal abuse in the form of neglect can be one of the first indicators of distress in a household. Whether lack of empathy, mental illness or abuse, an individual who fails to

provide basic care for a family pet is more likely to neglect basic care for other dependents in the household. Children who abuse animals pose a risk to themselves as well as others. The US Department of Education, the American Psychological Association and the National Crime Prevention Council agree that animal cruelty is a warning sign for at risk youth. A child who abuses animals may be acting out against violence that is occurring in the home. Studies have shown that chronic physical aggression (ie animal cruelty) by elementary school boys increases the likelihood they will commit physical violence during adolescence. Stopping animal abuse in children can help curb violent tendencies before they escalate to include violence towards people. You can help stop the cycle of violence by understanding animal abuse is an indicator of other problems. Reporting animal abuse can help authorities stop other types of violence. Encouraging both law enforcement and prosecutors to take crimes against animals seriously is one of the steps to creating safer communities. Humane education through programming in schools and public awareness about animal welfare and its link to human violence can help intervention before violence begins or escalates. Technically over the line into the town of Coeymans, Callanan’s stone quarry is deeply woven into the history of the hamlet of South Bethlehem. Family stories told about work at the quarry, the elegant houses where employees lived, even the sound and feel of rumbling trucks loaded with gravel speak to Callanan’s impact on village life. Peter Callanan saw an opportunity to match Bethlehem’s natural stone resources with the growing railroad lines. He also anticipated the need for improved road surfaces and a state highway system. To that end, he founded the Callanan Road Improvement Company in 1883 with partners Dr. J.R. Davidson, a local physician, Phillip Scharhem, local store owner and John Newton Briggs who owned large ice houses in Coeymans. One of their first projects was providing crushed ballast stone to the Buffalo and Weehawken Railroad (later the New York Central’s West Shore Line). In 1895, his company was awarded the first contract for a state road that was let by the state. When Peter Callanan died in 1896, his wife, Hannah Whitbeck Callanan played an important role in the company. In 1902 the company was thriving with expansion plans in the works. Disaster struck on December 28 when the mill burned down. Several of the stockholders wanted to sell out and not try to reopen. Under Hannah’s leadership, the company held together and the mill was rebuilt with modern machinery.

A steam shovel unloads rock into a truck at the quarry.

The pictures shown here, including the one above of buildings at the quarry, are from Hattie Van Atten Griffin’s photo album. Hattie is Bob Griffin’s grandmother. The album dates from about 1915 to 1920 with some later photos mixed in.

May 1909 brought another disaster to the quarry. A premature explosion occurred killing 29 men, including Hannah Callanan’s sons Charles and John. In an ironic twist, the Altamont Enterprise reported that just the year before in 1908 John Callanan, then president and manager of the company, had “decided to put in one giant blast and loosen enough stone for the monster crushers for months.” After this giant blast, invited guests were treated to a lobster and clam spread. After the 1909 disaster, Hannah brought in her brotherin-law John Callanan to keep the company going.

An analysis of one page of the 1910 US census shows the involvement of the stone quarry in the hamlet. On the last page, where enumerator Harman P. Vanderzee dramatically wrote “Here ends the enumeration of the Village of South Bethlehem,” there are just 12 households listed. Within those households, there are six men who worked at the quarry: George Wiltsie (as a carpenter), his son Rupert (fireman,) William Carkner (engineer), and James Livingston, Andrew Van Alstyne and Harry Weaver (laborers). Harry Weaver is of particular interest because of his connection to Bob Griffin the man who provided the pictures that illustrate this article. Weaver married Louise Griffin sometime before the 1910 census. At the time, Louise had three children with her first husband, LeRoy Griffin. They were Cornelius, LeRoy and Hazel. LeRoy Griffin is Bob Griffin’s great grandfather making Harry Weaver his step- great grandfather. Bob Griffin wrote about growing up in South Bethlehem in the 1950s and 1960s, including this quote about the quarry: My Dad (and his Dad) operated a shovel at Callanan’s Quarry. A couple of times he took my brother and I over to watch an extremely large dynamite blast of rock from a distance out in the quarry. What a sight that was to see and hear a whole rock ledge come down. I was probably around 12 years old and Dad took me out to see the big shovel he ran. I got to sit in it and move the levers.

A couple poses at the stone quarry. Maybe this is Harriet Van Atten Griffin?

The Callanan Road Improvement Company remained in the family until 1960 when it was acquired by Pen Dixie Cement. The name was then changed to Callanan Industries. In 1985, Callanan Industries was acquired by Oldcastle, Inc, itself a subsidiary of the multi-national Dublin Ireland based CRH-PLC.

FINANCIAL FOCU$ Don’t Get Swayed by These Investment “Myths” Over time, you will run into various suggestions for investing successfully. Yet upon closer inspection, many of these ideas turn out to be “myths” – which could cause you trouble if you treat them as solid advice. Here are five of these myths, along with some reasons for ignoring them:

You can find the next “big thing.” All of us probably

wish we could have “gotten in on the ground floor” of Apple or Microsoft or some other tremendously profitable company. And who knows? There may indeed be a similar other business out there, waiting to take off. But it’s almost impossible for anyone to identify these potential “blockbusters.” There’s really no shortcut to investment success – you need the patience and discipline to invest for the long term, and you need to build a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance.

Investors should always seek to “buy low and sell high.” This is actually good advice – or it would be, if were possible to consistently follow it. But how can you know when the market is “high enough” to sell or “low enough” to buy? You can’t – and neither can anyone else. Trying to time the market rarely works. A more appropriate strategy is to invest regularly and to diversify your holdings among stocks, bonds, government securities and other vehicles, based on your goals and risk tolerance. Diversification can help protect you against market downturns that primarily affect just one asset class. Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.

with Jerry Pittz

It’s always smart to buy investments that have performed well recently. You may have read, in investment prospectuses, that “past performance is no guarantee of future results.” These words are certainly true; just because an investment has had a good run recently, it doesn’t mean its success will continue indefinitely. You need to evaluate each investment on its own merits and on how well it fits into your overall portfolio. International investing is too risky. In today’s global economy, it may be more risky not to invest some of your portfolio internationally. U.S. stocks represent less than half of global stock market capitalization – so by stopping at our borders, you are depriving yourself of a world of opportunities. It’s true that foreign investments carry some special risks relating to currency fluctuations and political and economic events, but you can help contain this risk by confining your international holdings to a relatively small percentage of your portfolio. A financial professional can suggest the best ways for you to add a global element to your investments.

You need a lot of money to make a lot of money. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a sizable amount of money to invest right away. But the world is full of people who started investing with small sums and ended up having enough money to enjoy the retirement lifestyle they had envisioned. If you’re just beginning to invest, put in as much as you can afford each month; as your income goes up, increase your investments. As an investor, time is your greatest ally.

Sticking to a consistent investment strategy can help you write your own investment tale – and you can leave the myths to the storybooks. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Y Pool Groups Build Social Community

The Bethlehem YMCA is the community center of our town. It’s a place where you will almost always run into friends and neighbors, catch up with other families, and maybe join for a workout, a class, a skate or a swim. Being a focal point for building a stronger community is one of the many beautiful things about our Y.

Wolfgang’s passion for swimming developed as a respite activity, when his wife had Parkinson’s.

Wolfgang Wehmann has a terrific view of how people come together at the Y. As a lifeguard and swim instructor, Wolfgang is a fixture at the Y. His smile and genteel manner help him make a special connection with YMCA members and he appreciates those who come to the Y primarily for social interaction.

Watching the daily goings-on at the Bethlehem YMCA pool is a long ways away from Wolfgang’s childhood, growing up in Berlin in 1945 at the end of World War II, when he experienced the horrors of war. “There’s a lady cuts out newspaper clips about Germany for me and we discuss history for half an hour or longer,” said Wolfgang, who came to the United States from Germany in the early 1970’s. “She is a former history teacher and she loves to share her knowledge.”

“For a lot of people, they are coming to the YMCA for social reasons, especially the elderly. There’s one lady who comes in the morning, greets everyone, and she participates in the aquatic wellness program. She is always speaking with people; they exchange recipes, talk with each other and sometimes they go for a walk at Five Rivers,” Wolfgang said. “We have what I call the men’s club that comes in the late morning,” he said. “Six or seven men, they don’t swim or work out, they just sit in the whirlpool, discuss stuff. Then they go in the instructional pool, and talk further. They are happy. If one does not come, they care what happened. They come to the Y together and sometimes they go out together for breakfast after.” “In the locker there are many discussions. Politics, but always in a civilized manner. A lot of teasing, but they are so happy. One man comes with his radio and he plays big band music. I asked him why he does that. He said he just wants to show others how good the music is. That’s his mission, to let others know about the Big Band era and the good music they made.” “It’s almost a total spectrum. Parents come with their children. They sit together and talk, sometimes with people they didn’t know before. They build friendships and soon they are inviting children to each other’s parties.” “Another member brings food in for the life guards. That’s her purpose. They know I like to cook and they bring in recipes to discuss.”

“She had Parkinson’s for 34 years. I cared for her for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I snuck in swimming. When she died, I became a life guard to ensure that the instructional pool could remain open for the children.”

Wolfgang says the groups that meet together at the Y pool are like families and have a great concern for each other. “People should know how caring the majority of the people in the pool are,” he said. “A mother comes in with a handicapped child; they make room for her so she can swim with her child. It’s infectious.” “The YMCA is the center of the town, the community; you have it all right there. If I wasn’t lifeguarding, I would miss it,” Wolfgang added. The pool is a microcosm of the Y and of our town. You can find similar gatherings, conversations, and fellowship in the Y lobby, the spin room, exercise studios, rink and wellness area. The YMCA is not just for physical health, but also for mental and spiritual health. It is for developing social responsibility, a stronger community and building a better us.
