Spring Maintenance Tasks You Should Never Skip Check the Coolant System

Depending on how far north you live, your car’s coolant system doesn’t have to work as hard during winter as it does in the summer. A car engine runs much hotter than the outside temperature no matter how warm the weather gets, but a few degrees can make a big difference.

Check and Add Fluids

Aside from inspecting the coolant system, you should also check all the fluids in your vehicle to make sure nothing’s leaking, the fluids aren’t breaking down, and nothing’s filling up with dirt or metal shavings. You might or might not need to change your oil based on what kind it is, what kind of car you own, and how long it’s been since your last oil change.

Not only does the air pressure change during a storm, it also fluctuates with the temperature. This affects your tire pressure, and in any case, air is always leaking out slowly but steadily. Also, if you use winter and summer tires instead of one set of all-weather tires, spring is definitely the time to switch them out.

Inspect the HVAC System

One feature you probably don’t use during winter is the air conditioner. When you run it for the first time in spring, make sure you leave it going for a good 10-15 minutes so the system can get rid of any strange smells and start working right again. If something doesn’t seem to work right, you should have a mechanic inspect your car’s A/C and air ducts.

Much like how you have to shower regularly and see a doctor every so often, you need to make sure that your car is clean and working correctly. You should remember to bring it to the shop regularly so they can perform regular maintenance according to the schedule in the owner’s manual.

10 things you can do to prepare your home for the spring selling season:

Fix all the small stuff. You may or may not want to have your home inspected before you list it, but know that the buyer will have an inspection before the sale is finalized. If they find small problems, they will worry that there are larger maintenance issues that they can’t yet detect. “They don’t expect to find problems, and when they do they really start to become wary,” Hildebrand says. “That can kill a deal.”

Get rid of oversized and excess furniture. The less furniture you have in your house, the larger it will appear when buyers are touring it. Sell or donate pieces you don’t plan to move to your new home, and store large or ugly pieces. You can rent storage pods, fill them yourself and have them delivered to your new home. Clear out all the clutter. That can be everything from magazines on a side table to the kids’ boots in the hall to your blender on the kitchen counter. The home needs to look sleek and minimalist. Put everything you can away, but don’t overfill closets because prospective buyers will look there, too. “If we have too much stuff around and too much clutter, people want to walk out,” Hardgrave says. Depersonalize. Your home may reflect your life, but you want new people to visualize it as their home. That means removing all the family photos, trophies and any political or religious décor items. Strive for a clean slate. Deep clean your home. Everything needs to be cleaned thoroughly, inside and out. You’ll want to clean out closets, wash all the windows and have the carpets cleaned. Moving your out-of-season clothing elsewhere will make your closet look twice as big, Hildebrand says. Update and freshen your décor. Many of today’s home sellers are baby boomers, while the buyers are millennials, making them essentially a generation younger. Wallpaper,

salmon-colored décor and heavy drapes all appear dated to the younger generation, which prefers minimalist and modern. An easy fix is putting brighter light bulbs in all your fixtures to create more light. “This is not the time to be energy-efficient,” Lappin says. Focus on curb appeal. Most buyers drive by before they ever ask to come inside. It’s time to trim trees, clean gutters, clear out dead landscaping and add new sod and flowers. Consider resurfacing your driveway, getting a new mailbox and numbers and painting your front door. “It’s a huge first impression,” Hildebrand says. Make sure your home is lighted at night in case prospective buyers drive by after work. Repaint in neutral colors. Builder white and beige look dated, with warm neutrals such as soft gray or pale taupe preferred, Hardgrave says. “Everybody likes their red dining room, but the buyers cannot picture themselves there,” Lappin says. If your home is already painted in neutral colors, consider a fresh coat of paint. Get professional photographs. If your home doesn’t show well in the photos, people won’t bother to visit. Some real estate agents provide professional photos as part of their marketing package. Photos taken with a phone or tablet aren’t acceptable, and you may want your stager at your photo shoot. “Great photos don’t happen by accident,” Hardgrave says. Create a story. Write a paragraph about why you love your home and post it with the listing. Put together information about improvements you’ve made. Lappin’s company hires professional writers to do home descriptions. “Happy homes bring more money,” she says. “The power of the story is incredible.” p. 13

The Selkirk

YMCA By Susan E. Leath

Most of us today are familiar with the Bethlehem Area YMCA. A part of the Capital District YMCA, the B.A.Y. opened in the former BIG Arena in the fall of 2004. A relatively young sprout in the YMCA family tree. Another branch of the Capital District Y is the Albany branch which can trace its roots back to 1857. A 1957 article in the Knickerbocker News called it the oldest social agency in the city. Cover Photo:

A boxing match held at the Selkirk Y on June 18, 1927. The match was part of an Athletic Field Day that included baseball, wrestling, and boxing with a “big feed” and dancing in the evening. A crowd of 3500-4000 was expected. (Courtesy of the Bethlehem Historical Association.)

Have you heard of the Railroad YMCA movement? As YMCA.net says on their website, “In 1872, the first Railroad YMCA was organized in Cleveland as a partnership between the YMCA and railroad companies to provide wholesome overnight lodging and meeting space for railroad workers.” In our area, the West Albany Railroad Y opened in 1877 followed by the Albany Railroad Y in 1879.

slate of religious services, entertainment and sporting events were held creating a real sense of community for what could be a very transient population. In 1929, a correspondent for the Ravena News Herald wrote a steady stream of Selkirk Y.M.C.A. Notes. Here are a few favorite quotes: April 12: All fair lasses are invited to the Selkirk Y.M.C.A. on April 26. In case your boyfriend objects, bring him along. Ben Kirby and His Midnight Serenaders will be present. Nuff said.

May 3: Mr. T.E. Flemming the New Trainmaster is rooming at the Y.M.C.A. for a few months until his family arrives from Buffalo. We welcome him to the Locally, the Selkirk Railroad YMCA opened in the 1924 Association and trust the he will find it, (as other in conjunction with the development of the Selkirk Rail fellows do) his “Other Home” while away from home. Yard. The Selkirk Y provided a home away from home for the men working the rails. One article describes October 4: R,R, Harris, Engineer on Hudson, is getting the new facility as designed for utility and called it a to be a regular grouch according to his Fireman “commodious home in which the tired railroader finds George Nichols. Well, can you blame him? He traded rest, fellowship and refreshment.” There were 100 in his old Hudson for a new one and was assured that sleeping rooms, a restaurant, and other facilities. A full it doesn’t use much gas. Railroad says ‘I can hardly

A large crowd gathers for a baseball game at the Selkirk Y. Teams rode the rails to play at various Railroad Ys. One team that played at Selkirk was from the Harmon Engine Shop in Harmon, NY. make enough to keep it in gas and oil, let alone pay for it.” Well, we can see how that might “Rub the wrong way.” December 13: This past week has brought several of the “old timers” back into the building…Harold Birkland on the B & A is back on the job wearing a big smile, and why not? Didn’t the little girl in Sringfield say “yes” and it won’t be long now. Another newspaper provided this quote from 1936: They call it the Railroad YMCA at Selkirk. But really, it’s Joseph E. Paul’s oasis of rest for men who spend most of their waking hours speeding on steel”. The Y building was heavily used and eventually replaced by a modern one in 1972. The Selkirk Y continued right up until 1993 when it closed for good.

A note on the back of this photo says it is of a “religious service being conducted in one of the railroad repair shops by the men of the YMCA at Selkirk.” Circa 1927. (Courtesy of the Bethlehem

Historical Association.)

Ask the

Canterbury Vet April 1-7 to be International Pooper Scooper Week. .aPaws, the Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists has declared April 1-7 to be International Pooper Scooper Week. The overlap with April Fool’s Day is just a coincidence. This group was formed in 2002 in recognition of the growing problem in our communities, environment and water tables associated with dog feces. It is estimated that over 4.4 billion pounds of feces are produced by the approximately 78 million dogs in the US each year. That’s enough to cover 900 football fields with 12 inches of dog waste. That’s deep dog doo! Dog feces can contain a wide variety of bacteria and parasites, some of which can infect other dogs, and some of which can also infect people. The risk to people and other animals is greatly reduced by prompt removal of feces and proper disposal. It’s a simple concept: if your pet poops outside, pick it up immediately. Use a special biodegradable pick up bag or re-use your plastic grocery bag, seal it, deposit it in the garbage, then wash your hands (or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you’re out for a long walk). Most people are conscientious about this, but one look around most parks and the neighborhood sidewalks will show you that not everyone is. Cleaning up after your dog is your responsibility as a pet owner. Even if you keep your dog contained in your own yard, taking the time to regularly clean up after your dog helps keep your family and community safe. Once you discover the threats dog feces pose to humans and the environment, you won't leave the house without a pick up bag again. Cow manure is an age-old, and effective, fertilizer, but dog feces is not. Cows are herbivores and their poop is pretty much broken down plant matter. It's essentially smelly compost. Just like you're not supposed to put meat products in your compost bin, a dog's meat based diet makes its poop very poor as a fertilizer. In fact, it is fairly toxic to plants. It is very acidic and will kill your grass if left on the lawn. Have you ever picked up dog feces left on the lawn and found the grass withered and yellow beneath? It isn't just from the blocked sunlight - dog poop is literally poison for plants. Putting it in your garden as fertilizer can contaminate your fruits and veggies with harmful bacteria or parasites. Even if you don't place dog poop in your garden, groundwater runoff can make your garden produce unsafe. Dog feces can carry intestinal parasites (worms). This means if your dog visits the park and someone else left dog poop with worm eggs laying on the ground, your pup is vulnerable. Dog poop can carry human-infecting ailments, too. Among other things, Fido feces can include: Giardia, Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli, Parvo virus, and Roundworms (the CDC shows 14% of Americans are infected with roundworms). p. 16

I've often heard someone say “don’t worry about picking up dog poop because it is going to rain soon.” When rain washes over dog poop and flows into the drainage system, that contaminated water is carried into local waterways. If you like going to a nearby river or lake, that same fecal water is mixed into the water where you enjoy swimming and boating. Studies indicate that about 90% of fecal coliform bacteria, which is used as a measure of water health and quality, is of non-human origin, mostly canine. Dog feces is considered so dangerous that it is in the same EPA pollutant category as oil and runoff from abandoned mines. Two to three days’ worth of un-picked up poop from 100 dogs can cause a big enough spike in bacteria levels to necessitate closing waterways within 20 miles to swimming and shell fishing. The next time you take your dog to the park or on a walk, please take the time to clean up. Even if your dog only poops in your yard, letting it remain on the ground is an invitation for illness and endangers others in your community. It is not fun or glamorous, but picking up dog poop is a necessary part of dog ownership. Just like bringing your four legged friend to the vet for an annual exam is an important preventative health measure, picking up his poop is an easy way to prevent disease and keep your community's waterways healthy. YMCA Summer Camp: For the Time of Their Lives When you are making plans for your kids this summer how about trading Twitter for a trail through the woods? What about ditching Snapchat for a swim in a pool or a lake? Let’s replace Fortnight with a field trip to an amusement park with friends and play some games that will make them forget Instagram in an instant! You can make this happen by enrolling your kids at the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp. Simply put, the Y’s summer camp has the best program, the best counselors, and the most fun camp environment of any summer camp in the entire Capital District. Just look at what the Bethlehem Y summer camp offers: There are age-appropriate activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition, we offer before and after care from 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. That’s 11 hours of care daily. And we offer campers field trips to exciting locations and attractions across the region and unique experiences right at the Y. The YMCA summer camp has special programming to fit all ages, interests and personalities. For the very young – kindergarten/1st grade - there are magicians, ponies, a petting zoo, clowns, DJs, art projects, singing and dancing.

assistance comes from scholarships made possible by donations to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. For more information about how you can make sure your children have the best summer ever by attending summer camp at the YMCA, you can stop by the Y front desk, or go online at cdymca.org, click on summer camps and on Bethlehem in the dropdown box. Registration is open today and you can register online to reserve your weeks, as they are filling up fast. This summer, have your kids enjoy sunshine instead of social media and games instead of gaming, by coming to the Bethlehem YMCA summer camp to have the time of their lives..

Mark Hansen Member, Bethlehem YMCA Board of Advisors

For second graders and up, there is a field trip every Wednesday to fun places such as the trampoline park, Adirondack Animal Land, YMCA Camp Chingachook on Lake George, Howe Caverns, Water Slide World and a JP Morgan cruise. For older kids in 7th and 8th grade, the YMCA offers a leader-in-training program to help a child develop sound decision making skills by providing challenging and fun character building experiences, all while enjoying camp sports, games, and participating in community service projects. There are also special field trips for older campers including river tubing, state parks, white water rafting, a high ropes course, and more. The Y also offers a Counselor-in-Training program for teens in 9th and 10th grades. In addition to all the fun things I’ve mentioned, Bethlehem YMCA summer camp is also the best value, especially when compared to privately run summer camps. We also offer a sibling discount for each additional child attending camp. In addition, the Y offers financial assistance for those who need help to afford summer camp. The

Strategies for Your Investment

“Garden”

If you’re a gardener, your busy season is at hand, as April has been designated National Garden Month. But could the skills you deploy at gardening be transferred to other areas of your life – such as investing? Here are a few ideas for doing just that:

Establish a timeline. As a gardener, you typically

follow a well-defined timeline. You need to get the soil ready a few months before you want to plant, and you need to plant at different times, depending on what plants you choose. You even need to set up a schedule for watering, feeding, weeding and other garden care. As an investor, you may also need to observe a timeline. During the early and middle stages of your career, you probably need to invest primarily for growth, so you can build resources for a comfortable retirement. Then, as you near retirement, you may want to lower your risk level by shifting some – though certainly not all – of your investment dollars from growth-oriented vehicles into more income-producing ones. And once you do retire, your focus will shift to preserving your money, so one of your key decisions will center on how much you can afford to withdraw each year from your investment portfolio.

Choose “healthy” investments. Gardeners like to choose plants they know will really last. That’s why they look for things such as green leaves, as opposed to brown or yellow ones, and thick stems, which usually indicate a plant is strong, healthy and capable of surviving a transition from the pot to the ground. And when you invest, you, too, should look for signs of health in the investments you choose. For example,

with Jerry Pittz

when picking stocks, look for companies with solid fundamentals, such as experienced management, strong earnings and the demonstrated ability to produce products and services attractive to consumers. Or, when considering bonds, consider those that independent rating agencies have awarded the highest grades, in terms of the financial strength of the issuer.

Feed your investments properly. Things like fertilizer and plant food can be valuable, but the most important element in plant nutrition is water. Under-watered plants will not survive, but overwatering your plants can certainly damage them severely. When you invest, you also need to know the right amount of “food,” or “nutrients,” to apply. If you don’t put enough money into investments, they may not grow as much as you’d like. On the other hand, it is possible to “overwater” certain investments. For example, if you constantly put money into just one or two investments, they could end up crowding out others in your portfolio, causing you to lose the value of diversification. And if these particular investments are already growth-oriented vehicles, highly subject to market risk, they could take a big hit during a market downturn. Ultimately, seek a balance in how you distribute your investment dollars. Year after year, successful gardeners reap the rewards of their labors. And following some of their habits can help you work toward a long-lasting and fruitful investment garden, too.

Trish Pix Tattered Pages Used Books

Dear Constant Reader, Did you miss me? Did you even know that I was missing? Hah! I was the one who missed out…missed last month’s deadline. So much has happened in my personal life, including this dreadful cough that just doesn’t want to leave, that I missed the deadline for my article. When I cough incessantly, it is difficult to read, as you know, and I just might have coughed my deadline date right out of my head! I haven’t missed one ever before. Well, April is just around the corner and I am still awaiting those signs of Spring that have been held back by the Nor’ Easters we have experienced throughout March. Open windows are filtering in fresh air, the sunshine is glorious, the sky is screaming the bluest of blues and the bird choruses are louder every morning as Seamus and I take our morning stroll. My tulips are already pushing thru the ground and I think I noticed a few pussy willows attempting to pop. Soon the shop door will be open to welcome one and all in! April has always been a special month for me and my family. Filled with Birthdays, Anniversaries, and just a bit more family time! This April we will be celebrating within the shop as follows: April 7th 11-4, Dana Flint will be hosting her Spring Jewelry Extravaganza with her unique, handmade earrings, soy scented candles, organic balms, and new jewelry in rose gold and silver. She has been busy creating a new line of earrings which still start under $10. Anyone who purchases from Dana will receive $1.00 off on any book purchase in the shop. My incredible granddaughter, Trinity, will be here to assist Dana. We hope to see you here. These events are always wonderful! April 18th is my business partner, Seamus’ 14th birthday! Anyone who shops in the store on that day will receive an additional 14% off their total purchase! Come wish Seamus a Happy Birthday and perhaps have your picture taken with him for our Facebook page. April 27th is my birthday, and no, you will not receive my age in a percent off of books, but, you can receive a free book, from our free selection for any purchase over $10 on that day! Last month I took my granddaughter, Trinity, to see the movie “A Wrinkle in Time” based on the classic youth book by Madeline L’Engle. As movie adaptations go, it was the wonderful essence of the book. The spirit and the message of family, love, heroism, confidence and good vs. evil transferred well into this visualization on film. The cinematography, costumes and cgi were incredible. Just as I loved “The Jungle Book” on the screen, this movie certainly brought my imagination to life before my eyes! This past month I have read Stephen King’s “Gwendy’s Button Box” a novella, too long to call it a short story. Set in 1974, in Castle Rock, Maine, it inserts us into the life of Gwendy Peterson during a very important year in her p. 32

life. King’s character development of this young girl, who has seen the strange and unusual, into the dilemma of accepting the power to change life events! I identified with the meek, Gwendy, during this summer of revelation! It was recommended by a customer that I read “Missing” by Karin Alvtegen (Swedish author). It is a gripping, multifaceted thriller that involves a homeless grifter who makes a living using her looks, cunning and ability to disappear in plain sight! I found it very insightful into the Swedish criminal system that not only assumes your guilt, but blasts it across the media. It is up to the main character to not only prove her innocence, but discover why she is being hunted for these murders while trying to stay out of sight! As Spring is upon us, just a reminder that Tattered Pages is not the place to bring large donations of books, especially those leftover after your yard sale! I only take books from people who have plans to purchase books within the store, eventually. I will look at up to 6 adult books and 12 children’s books at a time. They must be free of odor and dirt. If I can’t use them, you must take them back. I never take Reader’s Digest Condensed, Enyclopedias or books that might not be popular anymore. It goes without saying, but of course I am going to say it, please do not leave boxes of book outside the closed store…that constitutes littering! I am currently in the middle of my second psychological thriller by British mystery writer, Ruth Ware. (Woman in Cabin 10) “In a Dark, Dark Wood”. This book has all the hallmarks of a great psychological thriller: fast pace, unstable characters, reflection about the distant past, links to current tragedies and an attempt at redemption. I will let you know what I thought next month. In conclusion, don’t forget that Tattered Pages offers selection, service and value compared to other bookstores in the area. I would love to connect you to just the right books. Until next month…happy reading! Trish & Seamus Patricia Eldridge is the owner of Tattered Pages~ established in 2006. 365 Feura Bush Rd.
