2024 Year In Review

A Message from our President

Dear Member,

We are proud to present the Guam Chamber’s 2024 Year in Review. This magazine showcases the programs, activities, and events that took place this year. We are extremely proud of the outreach, advocacy, and initiatives we curated with our membership in mind. Our Committees and Chamber Staff did a fantastic job of successfully executing each activity. However, there is much more work to do, and we could use more hands, so if you would like to engage with peers, develop new relationships, make a difference in the community, and impact our economic landscape, consider this your invitation to join us!

This Centennial Year has been a whirlwind, and it isn’t over yet! We are looking ahead to opening opportunities for economic diversification, growing our local workforce, and addressing persistent issues that hamper business productivity for our local businesses. The changes in leadership in the federal and local governments in 2025 may give rise to opportunities for our island that have been stagnant, and we are hopeful for a more lucrative climate that seems promising in the year to come.

As you scroll through the pages of this magazine, you will get a snapshot of the varied and numerous ways we support our members and contribute to our community. Your continued partnership, patronage, and commitment to the Guam Chamber as well as to addressing key issues that come in the way of progress, are just what we need to proceed ahead. You and members of your staff are encouraged to join us in the various committees and working groups to lend your voice, talent, and resources toward creative solutions that will benefit our businesses, our residents, and our island.

We have rolled up our sleeves and look forward to working alongside you!

Onward together,

LEGISLATIVE REVIEW & ADVOCACY COMMITTEE

Through the years, the Chamber has found that the number of bills generated by the Guam Legislature made it increasingly difficult to monitor and gather information in recent years. The Committee is committed to reviewing legislation and public policy issues that impact economic growth and progress in Guam and the region.

MARITIME AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

The Maritime Affairs Committee (MAC) is a standing committee of the Guam Chamber of Commerce.  Its formation in 1982 filled the need for a forum through which port users and companies directly involved with the movement of goods in and out of the Port of Guam may convene as a group to exchange information and address common concerns. Some of the lobbying efforts led by the group included the illumination of the liquid fuel tax, offdeck inspection stations, shore leave for foreign vessel crew, addressing port tariff and customs fee increases, port improvements, and more.

After a brief hiatus between 2018 and 2022, the Maritime Affairs Committee reconvened in 2023 at the request of the transportation industry to address issues and legislation impacting the industry. This year, the group met with government agency directors to gain insight, receive updates, and further establish engagement with industry partners. Members include wholesale and retail merchants, trucking and transportation companies as well as ex-officio members such as the local and federal government entities. Members interested in learning more about the Maritime Affairs Committee are encouraged to call the Chamber: (671) 472-6311/8001.  Page 9

At the beginning of the year, we breathe new life into GYP by actively listening to the feedback, interests, and aspirations of young professionals.  In our efforts to gain more insight to the needs of this particular demographic, we invited representatives from member companies to attend roundtable discussions. The idea is to leverage this valuable input, refresh the committee’s purpose, and develop meaningful programs throughout the year and beyond.

RED RIBBON EVENT

“Life is like a Movie Film, Drug Free.”

Through its partnership with the Judiciary of Guam, the Chamber with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Guam Red Ribbon Week Committee join forces to promote a safe, healthy, drug-free lifestyle throughout the month of October, which culminates with the nationally recognized Red Ribbon Week campaign. This program provides an opportunity for communities to unite by bringing together parents, schools, and businesses as we look for new and innovative ways to keep kids safe and drug-free. This month long activity includes community outreach at shopping malls, education outreach at schools, and ends with announcing winners in the annual poster, gate and video contests.
