When I walked into the South Hillside Clinic a few weeks ago, a woman stopped me in the lobby and said, “I know you. You saved my life.” Before I could explain that it couldn’t have been me, since I don’t provide direct patient care, she was telling me her story. As a young girl, Yolanda accompanied her grandmother when she visited Guadalupe Clinic. As an adult without insurance, Yolanda began coming three years ago for her own medical needs. “Sarah Lindsey, PA-C and the entire South Hillside staff are wonderful,” Yolanda reflected. Recently as part of her well women’s checkup, Yolanda was referred to Dr. Tracy Williams, a volunteer physician, for further care. It was revealed that Yolanda had Stage 1 cancer of the cervix. ”Dr. Tracy is a wonderful doctor and explained everything to me and was very informative every step of the way.” Early Detection Works (EDW) is a program funded by the State of Kansas. Through EDW, Yolanda received a

cancer screening prior to her surgery. She will continue to receive screenings and is cancer-free today. “Charlotte Ridley-McIntyre (Guadalupe Clinic, Medical Assistant) is a Godsend,” Yolanda shared, “She made the EDW paperwork simple and called to check up on me. I’m very thankful for her and for all of you – thank you for all you have done for me.” As always, caring for Yolanda was a team effort with our volunteer physicians, staff, volunteer nurses and aides, and support. ALL of us…WE...were able to save her life.
