History of Tehachapi

T

he Tehachapi community (Greater Tehachapi) is a mountain valley district including 50,000 acres of level land, embracing the Tehachapi, Brite, Cummings and Bear valleys, all with altitudes near 4,000 feet. The first known people to occupy the Tehachapi area were the American Indians known as the Kawaiisu (or, as they called themselves, Nu-oo-ah, meaning the People.) The first permanent white settlers were John Moore and Amanda Brite, who came to the Tehachapi Valley in the fall of 1854 from Texas and three years later moved to Brite Valley, which bears their name. Other settlers like Grant P. Cuddeback, George Cummings and William C. Wiggins soon arrived on the scene and began raising cattle, hay and grain. They also developed a lumber trade. Miners such as Peter D. Greene and John Hendrickson drifted into the Tehachapis and did some gold mining, but the real “gold” was found in the limestone deposits of the area. Kilns were soon built to burn the lime. A small community known as Williamsburg sprung up in the area of the present Golden Hills in the 1860s. For a time this community was also known as Tehichipa. Another town site was established by P.D. Greene. This second site was known as Greenwich and was located several miles east of Williamsburg/ Tehichipa. In 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to the Tehachapi Valley and laid out its own town site named Tehachapi. Eventually, the businesses and people moved to Tehachapi and the former communities faded away. The railroad engineers needed a long, level region at the top of the climb suitable for switching engines and rail cars. Such land was available at and near the Tehachapi site, and the summit about two miles east of the depot. The famed Tehachapi Loop made it possible for the trains to climb from the San Joaquin Valley and proceed through Tehachapi to Mojave, Los

12

Angeles, Barstow and other eastern destinations. Much of the soil in the local valleys is a rich, decomposed granite and vegetable silt, deep and wonderfully productive. Old publications describe Tehachapi as “A location par excellence for the fruit grower.” Orchard production and agriculture began to flourish and the cement industry became a vital economic asset of the new community. These operations still continue. In addition, the persistent winds through the Tehachapi Pass have enabled nearby wind farms to become one of the world’s leading producers of electrical power from wind energy. In 1909, the Tehachapi settlement was incorporated, and the town of Tehachapi was legally established. An act of the state legislature changed the town’s official name to City of Tehachapi in 1946. In 1932, the first state women’s prison was built in Cummings Valley. A 7.7 earthquake in 1952 did major damage to the city, including the prison. The inmates were moved to Frontera. In 1953, the state repaired the facility and made it a branch of the California Institution for Men at Chino. In the mid1960s, a new medium security facility was built in Tehachapi. In the mid-1980s two maximum security prisons were constructed. In 1998, the prison, now known as the California Correctional Institution (CCI), was annexed into the city. CCI is currently the largest employer in the region, with almost 1,700 persons on its payroll. The building of Highways 58 and 14 placed Tehachapi within a one-hour commute of Bakersfield, Lancaster and Edwards Air Force Base. Because of a favorable climate, many working in these and other areas wished to live near Tehachapi. This led to the development of the nearby communities of Golden Hills, Bear Valley Springs, Stallion Springs and Sand Canyon. Today, when one says Greater Tehachapi, it includes all these additional communities and many more county residents as well.

he Tehachapi area has an extraordinarily rich past that spans the story of the American West from pre-history, Native American culture, early exploration by mountain men, padres, the Spanish ranchers and cowboys, through mining, railroading, farming, ranching, early aviation, wind energy and more, including the historic California Gold Rush. The Tehachapi Museum tells Tehachapi’s wonderful stories. Old-timers and newcomers alike come to hear, see, and touch the stories that make a community unique, stories that enrich people with the knowledge, humor and grit that created this community and inform its future. The oldest house in town, the Errea House Museum, is located across the street at 311 S. Green Street. It is named for a Spanish Basque family who lived there for over 70 years. It is open during regular museum hours as a house museum showing a working class family’s way of life, circa 1900 to 1930. A brochure for a Walking Tour of historic buildings and homes is available at the Chamber as well as the Museum. The 1 to 1½ hour walking tour lets you see up close the small town charm of Tehachapi and passes by small downtown businesses where you can stop for refreshments or to shop with small town merchants. The newly renovated Tehachapi Museum is chockfull of items that will spark the imagination. You will find the femur of a mammoth (from the Ice Age), opium tins (from the railroad construction camps of the 1870s), a textile gallery that features clothing and household items, fossilized sharks teeth and a recreated blacksmith shop, complete with a one-horse drawn buggy. Photos show the devastation of one of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history, which virtually destroyed Tehachapi. You will see the actual mercantile store clock on display, that stopped at the exact time of the 1952 quake and that’s

probably as close as you’ll want to get to that piece of our history. Photos show herds of sheep and cattle on Curry Street, being driven to the railroad stockyards. In a new addition to the Museum, the Mark and Jessie Milano Gallery houses an informative exhibition that showcases the history and culture of the Kawaiisu tribe, the Native Americans who inhabited this area for thousands of years before the coming of the white settlers and explorers. There are changing artifacts and photos exhibited on a regular basis, and always something different to see. Organizations and tour groups are welcome; please call if you wish a special tour outside regular The Heritage League and operating hours. Museum operate on memberships and donations. In addition, For more information on any special tours can of our programs, please leave be arranged for a message at (661) 822-8152. any age school group. Tehachapi was settled by Euro-Americans in the 1850s – not that long ago historically speaking. The past 150 years of history has brought tremendous change here in this remarkable inland island situated between the Mojave Desert and the San Joaquin Valley “breadbasket of the nation.” We are located at 310 S. Green Street, just a block south of the Hitching Post Theater, and we are open from 12 to 4 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday, on special occasions and by appointment. Visit this showplace for historic downtown Tehachapi, along with the Errea House Museum and the railroad museum on Tehachapi Boulevard at the 1904 Tehachapi Railroad Depot, for a peek into the past.

The Historic Errea House

T

he charming Errea House Museum, at 311 S. Green Street, is the oldest house in Tehachapi. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it takes its name from the Errea family, whose Basque immigrants and descendents lived in the house for many decades. The Errea House was constructed in the 1870s in the original town site of Williamsburg or Tehichipa, in the Old Town area. It was moved to its present location on log rollers around 1900, after the railroad chose a route through what is the current city of Tehachapi. The Tehachapi Heritage League purchased the Errea House in 1999 and has since worked to raise funds for its renovation. A new roof, repairs to the foundation and porch, air conditioning and heat, rewiring and a newly refurbished kitchen was completed as part of the renovations. The 1920s kitchen has just been

refurbished with linoleum, wood wainscoting and reproduction wallpaper. It contains many vintage items from local donors and cabinets from a local farmhouse. Additional improvements have been made recently in the parlour and the bedrooms. The Errea House is currently open during regular museum hours and for special occasions. Tehachapi’s only public garden, the old – fashioned 1900-era Errea Garden is also open to the public during daylight hours. The restored Errea House is a window to the past, depicting the lifestyle of a workingclass family living in Tehachapi during the 1900s to the early 1930s. In addition to the ongoing renovations, which take place as funds become available, the Heritage League also accepts donations of clothing and furnishings to be used to furnish the Errea House as a Historical House Museum.

The Tehachapi Depot

Railroad Museum & Collection

R

ebuilt in 1904 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Depot is a standard Southern Pacific Railroad design known as Plan No. 23. Only six depots are left and the Tehachapi Depot is the only one still situated at its original building site. It is also one of the few buildings that remained standing after the 1952 Tehachapi earthquake. The Depot is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Union Pacific Railroad handed keys of the Depot to the City of Tehachapi in 2005. Work began soon thereafter to restore the building to its original condition. On June 13, 2008, with restoration work very nearly complete, tragedy struck and the Depot was completely destroyed by fire. In June 2008, the Tehachapi City Council announced their decision to rebuild. The original floor plans were used to ensure that the new Depot matched the original. Construction was completed in November 2009 and includes a new viewing platform on the north side of the building adjacent to the train tracks. A special feature of the parkstyle landscaping is the Railroad Signal Garden where the Stokoe Railroad Signal Collection is displayed. The signals have been lovingly restored by volunteers of the Friends of the Tehachapi Depot. The Museum houses several large collections of historic

railroad artifacts, including antique railroad maintenance equipment and tools, dinnerware, signs and other railroadiana, plus stories and photographs of the men and women who built the railroad and whose lives were affected by it. The Museum also contains a gift shop with souvenirs, books and memorabilia.

The coming of the railroads changed the entire world overnight. At the time that the railroads first came into public use in the early 1800’s, horseback was the fastest means of personal transportation, and the only way to move heavy items was by ship or slow moving ox-cart. A trip that had previously taken months on uncomfortable and rutty roads now took just days on smooth twin bands of iron, an order of magnitude increase in speed and efficiency. In addition, the railroads fostered numerous innovations that still impact our lives directly. T

he railroad was built over Tehachapi Pass from Caliente to Mojave in 1876 and is considered an outstanding engineering feat. The track climbs 3,600 feet in 50 track miles from Bakersfield to Tehachapi using “S curves back and forth up the Tehachapi Creek watershed. At one point just above Keene, the engineer, William Hood, built a large continuous curve which brought the track back over itself and has become known as the Tehachapi Loop. This engineering marvel has become famous among rail fans from all over the world. In 1998, the entire Tehachapi Pass Rail Line was honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a National Civil Engineering Historic Landmark because it has been in continuous use for more than 120 years with little or no modification. The best viewing locations are along Woodford-Tehachapi Road either southeast from Keene or northwest of Old Towne Tehachapi. GREATER TEHACHAPI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS REFERRAL GUIDE

East Kern County

Renewable Energy A World Marvel

I

n 1981, wind was discovered, and the Tehachapi-Mojave Wind Resource Area was born. Today, Kern County’s wind energy resource area is considered the, “Wind Capital of the West,” with over 4300 megawatts of installed capacity. Local wind farms developed and pioneered the technology for economically efficient wind energy generation and that same creative, technical approach, is now home to over 4700 megawatts of solar energy generation, making Kern County, a leader in renewable energy development. It’s unique East-West position across the base of the Coast Range and Sierra Nevada’s makes the Tehachapi Mountain Pass a funnel for the prevailing winds of California’s San Joaquin Valley. The 4000-foot rise in elevation and thermal conditions of the Mojave Desert further intensify the areas world famous wind resource. Tehachapi’s wind is inexhaustible, free and clean. Today, approximately, 500 people are directly employed by the wind industry. Another 1,500-2,200 are indirect or induced employment.  The pass has gone through a massive transformation with the construction of SCE’s Tehachapi Renewable Energy Project (TRTP). This state initiative to upgrade the transmission out of Tehachapi began in 2008 and the TRTP was finally completed and energized in 2016. This has opened the door to further regional wind power, as well as, solar development and multiple projects are expected to be installed to utilize that transmission capacity. The TRTP was the largest transmission project in the world developed for the sole purpose of transporting renewable energy! Southern California Edison has estimated their renewable resource mix for 2016, and has wind generating 36% (7,426.736 GWh), solar at 34% (7,129.670 GWh) with geothermal at 26% with biomass and small hydro generation respectively completing 100% of SCE’s RPS. Other major utilities have PPA’s in the Kern

County renewable energy industry such as, San Diego Gas and Electric, PG&E and numerous municipalities. With over 4500 megawatts of capacity, this line is promoting a green energy revolution for Kern County. Allowing Kern County to continue as a leader in the renewable energy industry, with over $30 billion in private investment. Kern County policymakers and Planners are committed to the environment, sustainability, and the quality of life and implemented a goal to provide 10,000 megawatts or 10 GW of renewable energy power by 2015, today, Kern County has over 11,000 megawatts of Utility Scale Wind, Solar and Distributed Generation. Kern County is also home to some of the world’s best solar plants, as the Mojave Desert receives up to twice the sunlight received in other regions of the country. This abundance of solar energy makes solar power plants a cleaner alternative to traditional power plants, which burn fossil fuels such as oil and coal. Solar power provides an environmentally benign source of energy, produces virtually no emissions, and consumes no fuel other than sunlight. Mural District

Tehachapi’s Unique History

T

he Tehachapi Main Street Murals Committee has been hard at work over the last ten years, raising funds and planning a series of historical murals to showcase the rich history of the Tehachapi Valley. In 2011, the tenth mural was completed, to cover a wall of Centennial Plaza on Green Street. It commemorates the historic BeeKay Theatre, a converted 1932 Art Deco movie house that now serves as the home for the Tehachapi Community Theatre (TCT). The murals are meant to beautify the downtown area, showcase the history of the area for local residents, and serve as a historical guide for visitors to Tehachapi. The Murals Committee made a commitment early on to produce only first quality murals, and Tehachapi now has a wellrespected murals program. One mural features a street dance held in 1915 when the first electric streetlights were installed in Tehachapi. Phil Slagter, another wellknown mural artist used original photos from 1915 to design and paint the mural. Faces of current local residents, and those from the history of Tehachapi were incorporated into the scene. At the time, Slagter lived nearby, in Canyon Country, but has since moved to Montana. Tehachapi was fortunate to have Visalia artist Colleen Mitchell-Veyna to paint “People of the Mountains,” depicting Tehachapi’s Native American Nuooah or Kawaiisu tribe. It incorporates a village scene from before contact with the white man and portraits around the perimeter show more recent members and elders of the tribe, as well as the type of baskets for which the local Indians were known. At The Shed Restaurant, the T-Hacha-P mural was designed by master artist Art Mortimer, who sketched the mural on the wall to

22

scale and mixed all the paints. Then 15 local artists did the actual painting in one day, starting at 8 am and continuing until 5 pm. At that time, the scaffolding was whisked away, the area cleaned up, and a dedication was held. Local artist Lyn Bennett designed and painted the Blacksmith Shop mural, taken from an actual photograph of a circa 1900 blacksmith shop, located directly across the street. She was assisted by Brenda Anderline. The Avelino Martinez mural depicts this legendary Tehachapi resident who worked as a groom for the notorious Joaquin Murrieta horse gangs that rounded up stray horses and other livestock to take back to Mexico. Martinez settled in Cummings Valley and lived to be 113 to 115 years old, according to various accounts. It was painted by Patti Doolittle.

A mural commemorating the first Air Mail flight from Tehachapi to Bakersfield on May 19, 1938 was painted by Tehachapi artist Mark Pestana at the Green Street site of the Tehachapi Post Office, circa1953 to 1962. It incorporates a cast relief of a proud American eagle, part of the faรงade, when built in 1953. In 2008 a mural saluting the 100th anniversary of the township of Monolith and the cement plant that gave it its name was completed. The mural depicts the importance of Monolith to the people of Tehachapi. This mural was made possible by a grant from Lehigh Southwest Heidelberg, current owners and operators of the cement plant. To commemorate the 2009 Centennial of the 1909 incorporation of the town of Tehachapi, a three-panel mural on Tehachapi Boulevard was painted. Other grants, fundraisers, and donations from the building owners, as well as the community,

have provided additional funding. The newest mural was dedicated on July 30, 2011. It is on the south side of the Beekay Theatre, adjacent to Centennial Plaza in Downtown Tehachapi, and appears to be a line of people in line to buy tickets.

GREATER TEHACHAPI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS REFERRAL GUIDE

The mural celebrates the history of the building, which was originally built by Frank Baumgart and Lou Kanstein, owners of the Beekay. Mural artist Colleen Mitchell-Veyna painted the mural with the people in line depicted in clothing typical of the 1940s. www.Tehachapi.com

Community

The City of Tehachapi

S

mall communities across the United States are faced with the same dilemma, grow appropriately, or die on the vine. Across this country we can see countless examples of circumstances that have led to small towns “drying up so to speak as economic opportunities, industry and livelihoods disappear. Tehachapi is fortunate to not be dealing with those issues and blessed under current circumstances. Our location allows our residents many industry options for employment; business, agriculture, oil, mining, aerospace, construction, renewable energy, healthcare, military defense, retail and entrepreneurship. The City of Tehachapi has the ability to adapt to market conditions as our economy is not tied to one particular sector, but a result of many entities both in and around our community. For example, the health care industry is booming here in

Tehachapi. Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley opened their doors on the new hospital in November of 2018 and since then opportunities for health care have risen to new levels. Dignity Health opened a family practice clinic in Tehachapi, bringing their expertise and network of doctors previously reserved for Bakersfield into this community. They hired additional staff and expanded clinic hours and specialty services to meet the needs of the community. Kaiser Permanente renovated their clinic and added additional physicians allowing even more patients locally to have a primary care physician in Tehachapi, again leading to

fewer trips out of the area for health care. Omni Family Health also continues to expand their offerings helping Tehachapi play a major part in health care being one of the fastest growing sectors in Kern County.

26

www.Tehachapi.com

Tehachapi’s additional retail offerings are also expanding opportunities locally. Not only are new stores like Walmart adding local jobs, they allow for more goods to be purchased locally. General merchandise stores are one of the biggest

retail leakage categories with over $25 million being spent out of Tehachapi by Tehachapi residents each year. The addition of a major retailer who embraces technologies like online ordering/in-store pickup as well as grocery pickup services are expected to once again keep more money local. The impact of Walmart will not only be felt on the sales tax front, fewer shopping trips out of the area mean more of that saved money will be spent at other business, restaurants and shops in our city. The City of Tehachapi understands the modern demands of the community as we continue to attract the industries and people that follow. A community with a strong quality of life, fiscal prudence and understanding of who we are, we must grow within our means to continue this momentum and avoid the pitfalls often associated with small towns. It is that understanding and our partnerships with groups like the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce that will foster that growth in the years to come.

GOLDEN HILLS COMMUNITY SERVICES DISTRICT Company Profile Established in 1966, the Golden Hills Community Services District is dedicated to the community it serves. In addition to providing nearly 8,300 Golden Hills’ residents with clean, drinkable water, the five-member, elected Board of Directors seeks to enhance the quality of life by providing services above and beyond…

• The Golden Hills Community Services District (GHCSD) constantly monitors water capacity and water quality to provide customers with an excellent, consistent source of water. • GHCSD sponsors quarterly Large Item Waste Collection Events at the District Office Complex. This community outreach provides residents with an easy way to clean up property. In conjunction with the collection events, volunteers scour the roadways and alleys of Golden Hills collecting illegally dumped garbage. This program has helped beautify Golden Hills. • GHCSD works closely with the Kern County Fire Department and the Greater Tehachapi Fire Safe Council to create operational fire suppression water dip sites throughout the District. The CSD encourages fire safe lot clean up, and supports “Chipper Days” as an additional service to residents. • Mosquito-borne disease continues to be of concern and GHCSD maintains a supply of mosquito fish, offering them free to the public. Residents can place the guppylike swimmers in horse troughs and ponds to abate mosquitoes. • The CSD reviews and approves septic and building plans to maintain the high level of architectural control over new construction. Staff also works with residents to enforce the covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&R’s) for the District. • The GHCSD will continue to support

community improvement projects i.e. the highly successful Red Apple Road project, the anticipated federally-funded Pedestrian/ Bike Trail and ongoing efforts to improve the park system within Golden Hills. The future is golden for Golden Hills’ residents. The GHCSD Board will continue to access all available resources – in the ongoing mission to make our home the very best it can be. Board meetings are held the second Thursday of each month in the District Office at 6:30 pm. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. ALPINE FOREST PARK Alpine Forest is located about seven miles West and South of Tehachapi and encompasses 5,000 acres in the Tehachapi mountains at elevations from 4,600 to 6,000 feet. There are approximately 1,000 billable lots in five different tracts ranging in size from a quarter acre all the way up to 11 acres in size. Tract 3423 has water provided by the Alpine Forest Park Mutual Water Company while the other four require wells on the property owner’s lots. There are approximately 200 existing homes in Alpine Forest, most of which are occupied year round. They are reachable via thirty miles of semi-private roads which are maintained by the Association. The Alpine Forest Park Property Owners’ Association (AFPPOA) was established as a not for profit corporation in 1970 and is comprised of five volunteer Board members who are elected annually. The Association has one full time employee (maintenance) and seven part time employees including an office manager and six security personnel. The annual budget of the Association is approximately $378,700 and each lot is assessed $350 a year. The Board meets monthly on the Third Saturday of the month and members are urged to attend. The Annual Meeting is held in June followed by a well-attended BBQ. Schools: Elementary students attend Cummings Valley and Junior and Senior High School Students go to Tehachapi.

Wildlife is abundant in Alpine Forest and residents and visitors often see mountain lions, bears, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, and wild boar and hunting is not allowed. Of course there are also rattle snakes and plenty of “good snakes and a glance upwards will often let you see condors, eagles, hawks and many smaller birds that frequent the area.

MOUNTAIN MEADOWS COMMUNITY SERVICE DISTRICT The Mountain Meadows Community Service District was formed in 1970, with a three-person board, by the Kern County Board of Supervisors to maintain the roads within the Mountain Meadows Community. It functioned this way until 1987 when the board members all resigned, as they were unable to obtain liability insurance for the District. In July 1991 the district reformed and became responsible for their own function once again. The district maintains (27) miles of roadways, drop inlets (drainage) and street signs. Formed with 3 elected board of directors, general manager and 7 seasonal part time employees. The office operates 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 8-12 pm and 1-4 pm. The Board meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month located at 17980 Highline Road in Tehachapi at 6 pm.

Climate Tehachapi has been fittingly referred to as the “Land of Four Seasons. The winters are cool and snowfall is typically light. Mother Nature announces spring with an impressive display of poppies, lupines and other wild flowers. Summers are warm and dry and in autumn, leaves change color as the temperature begins to drop. Its world famous wind resource is seldom calm and peaks from February to July. The area wind farms and glider port are just a few ways to harvest the wind.

Skylark North Have you ever dreamed of soaring gracefully with the birds, the silence broken only by the sound of the wind? Skylark North can help you fulfill that dream. Mountain Valley Airport, a privately-owned public use airport, is one of the premier soaring sites in the world. Skylark North is a world-renown sailplane flight school, in residence at Mountain Valley Airport since 1979. In that time, thousands of pilots have earned their wings here in Tehachapi. Skylark North offers scenic rides, sailplane COURTESY OF MOUNTAIN VALLEY AIRPORT flight training and services to private sailplane owners/pilots from around the world. The schools professional staff and concern for safety is known world wide. In addition to the numerous television shows, movies and commercials which have been produced at Mountain Valley Airport, Skylark North has on-going flight training contracts with the US Air Force Test Pilot School, the National Test Pilot School, Scaled Composites, Virgin Galactic and the US Army Quality Test Directorate. Skylark North also works closely with NASA and Scaled Composites on various aviation projects. Mountain Valley Airport is also home to the Raven’s Nest Sandwich Shop, open daily from 8-5; and Mountain Valley RV park which has 27 sites with hookups, a sanitary dump station, restroom and shower facilities. students to receive college credit. The CTE program provides a variety of “hands-on” experiences through woodshop, home economics, child development, business, health careers, wind turbines, and criminal science courses. THS also offers concurrent enrollment with Cerro Coso Community College, enabling students to earn college credit while fulfilling high school graduation requirements. Jacobsen Middle School serves over 900 students and consists of a sixth, seventh and eighth grade program. The school involves staff, students, and the community in maintaining a safe, positive and diverse environment which encourages each student’s potential for excellence by providing a curriculum that promotes respect, responsibility, social development and academic skills. The school offers a number of extracurricular activities, including sports teams, and an award winning Science Olympiad team. The elementary schools all offer an articulated educational curriculum, which provides students with a solid foundation to prepare them for middle and high school experiences. In 2010, Golden Hills Elementary was named a California Distinguished School. In 2007, Tompkins Elementary received a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award. Elementary students can participate

in Robotics and computer coding, music, an Oral Language Festival, as well as many other extracurricular activities and community service projects. Monroe is the District model Continuation High School. Students are provided individual support and guidance. Monroe’s goal is to prepare students for the next phase of learning in their lives: military service, vocational training, work experience, or higher education. The Monroe program is located at the THS campus. The District also offers an Adult Education program for those adults seeking to obtain their high school diploma. The Tehachapi Independent Learning Academy (TILA) offers curriculum support for parents who choose to home school their children. The District’s highly qualified, certificated staff assists the parent in providing instructional support, district curriculum, and assessments to ensure student learning is maximized at home. The commitment by the Board of Trustees, the administration, the teachers and the entire school community ensures that the Tehachapi Unified School District graduate will be academically prepared and technologically ready for the challenges of college, a career, or military service.

Park Descriptions

Philip Marx Central Park

Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District (TVRPD) maintains 116 acres of parks and five facilities throughout the Tehachapi Valley. Our District also offers a vast variety of recreational and leisure programs for all ages. From tots to seniors, we have a class, program, run, event or sport for you. We are proud of the positive impact we have on the Tehachapi Community. From programs to parks, we are the leading recreation and park provider in our amazing community. Along with the great recreation and parks we provide, we are doing more to enhance the quality of life in the Tehachapi Valley. Check out all the improvements happening around the District. We feel a responsibility to inspire people to learn why a quality parks and recreation system is fundamental to youth development, active living, neighborhoods, families, community events and economic development. Most of all, we want to inspire you to get out and enjoy the opportunities we offer. Play up. Live up.

Located at Mojave and “E” street near downtown Tehachapi, Central Park is the flagship park of TVRPD. This 4.68-acre park is home to multiple events throughout the year including the Mountain Festival, 4th of July Hot Dog Festival, Relay for Life, Go Native, multiple 5K races and the Music in the Park summer series. The Central park playground received a small facelift in early 2017. Park patrons will find state of the art play equipment by Miracle Play Systems and the German company Berliner. The Steven Shy Activity Center (SSAC), restrooms and Gazebo are also located at Central Park. SSAC is home to the Tehachapi Tots program.

dog park, Bike Pump Track, softball field, restrooms and open grassy areas.

Meadowbrook Dog Park The newly constructed Dog park consists of two grassy areas, one for large dogs and one for dogs under 30 pounds. Both areas have drinking fountains, open space for running and agility equipment to keep our furry friends entertained. Park of the dog park construction was funded by TVRPD winning the small community division of the Pet Safe Bark for your Park competition in 2014.

Bike Pump Track The pump track, located at the far North end of Meadowbrook Park, was developed through a collaborative partnership between TVRPD, Tehachapi Mountain Trails Association (TMTA), City of Tehachapi and the Golden Hills Community Services District. The track is maintained by TMTA. The pump track is a continuous loop that can be ridden on a bike without pedaling. Tracks consists of a series of rolling bumps (rollers) and banked corners (berms) that allow the rider to gain momentum. PHOTO BY NICK SMIRNOFF

Aspen Builders Inc. Activity Center The newly renamed and renovated Aspen Builders Inc. Activity Center (ABIAC) reopened in February of 2017. The $300,000 renovation updated the thirty-five-yearold facility with a new floor, LED lighting, new paint, new drinking fountain, parking lot paving and adjustable main basketball hoops. This was accomplished due to the $101,000 donation by Aspen Builders Inc., $10,000 donation by Lehigh and $5,000 donations from the City of Tehachapi, Sail Thru Car Wash, McDonalds of Tehachapi and RST Cranes. ABIAC is home to all youth and adult indoor sports, community events and is available to rent for wedding receptions, conventions and fundraisers.

Ollie Mountain Skate Park The 11,000-square foot facility is located between the Aspen Builders Inc. Activity Center and West Park. Skateboards, inline skates, scooters and bikes are allowed.

Dye Natatorium Dye Natatorium, built in 1958 is a

seasonal indoor pool facility located on the Jacobson Middle School campus at 400-B South Synder. The Dye consists of a heated, 25 yard, six lane pool complete with showers, changing rooms, restrooms, and private yard. It is home to TVRPD Red Cross Lifeguarding and Jr. Lifeguard certifications, Red Cross Learn to Swim program, water aerobics, lap swim and summer recreational swim. Both the THS and Barracuda Swim teams call the Dye home during their respective seasons. Dye Natatorium is a great place to host and celebrate birthday parties, graduations, or other special occasions. Dye Natatorium has gone through extensive upgrades and renovations since 2013 of over $275,000 including a UV filtration system, new roof, ADA upgrades, new ceiling insulation and vapor barrier.
