THE CENTER FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) is a new teaching and training facility that sits on a 37-acre site adjacent to GTCC’s Jamestown Campus. As part of the project, a new road is being constructed to connect the Jamestown campus to CAM, including a tunnel under Guilford College Road. This state-of-the-art manufacturing training

center will house the college’s Transportation, Welding, and Computer Integrated Machining

programs. Just over 157,000 of the building’s original 250,000 square feet of warehouse has been renovated for instructional labs, shop spaces, and classrooms; student collaborative areas; faculty offices; and areas for local manufacturing companies to use for training employees. R&D, etc. Long-term plans call for growing the building’s useable space to 380,000 square feet.

Expanded Space, New Equipment TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGIES

The Automotive Systems Technology students have four classroom/ automotive shop areas, each with four bays and four lifts, and a fifth shop with alignment machines and other industry standard equipment. The Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology area has seven bays, almost doubling their current capacity, while the Collision Repair Technology area has three paint booths and three areas for frame straightening. Two drive-through classrooms allow for live demos, and let vehicles move between the body and paint shops without going outside in bad weather or losing heat or cooling when the door is opened. New technology also permits an instructor to present a lesson or demonstration to multiple areas simultaneously via wall-mounted flat screen TV’s.

CAM will allow three growing programs to add space to serve more students, preparing them to meet the needs of local companies. The college is also investing in the latest manufacturing technology which, combined with our existing equipment, will make it possible to give GTCC students the best possible real world training and experience.

COMPUTER INTEGRATED MACHINING

With much more space than is currently available and the addition of many new machines, the Computer Integrated Machining program will be able to accommodate more students in smaller classes, allowing for a lower studentto-machine ratio.

WELDING TECHNOLOGY

Currently GTCC’s Welding Technology courses are filled to capacity. The program will have three times more space at CAM to accommodate many more students and allow every student to have an individual welding booth with its own fume extraction system for added safety.

Space for Local Businesses

CAM FLOORPLAN CAM 3D PRINTING LAB

HOME OF ITS DEPT

Today, 3D printing is at the forefront of a manufacturing revolution. We are embracing this revolution at CAM by creating a 3D printing lab equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

PAGES 5&6

The lab will have the most advanced desktop plastic 3D printers available today, allowing users to make industrial quality models significantly more detailed than other plastic 3D printing technologies. The lab will also have a cutting edge system that automates metal 3D printing, allowing users to create complex metal parts from digital file to finished prototype.

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing is a community resource as well. This space will give GTCC the flexibility to create training areas for specific skills needed by local employers and meet those needs in a timely manner.
