Government shutdown hits close to home

he streets of Washington were devoid of federal workers as the shutdown slugged on. With several nonessential government departments at standstill, Congress played a political tennis match between the Democrat-controlled House and the Republican-controlled Senate, with bills to reopen the government dead on arrival due to a lack of funding for the infamous wall.

As the shutdown stretched into it’s 35th day on Friday, President Trump and Congress came to an agreement to reopen the government for three weeks, with no budget modifications. After Feb. 15, if no agreement is made on the new budget, the government could return to a shutdown.

WHAT IS A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN? To simplify how a government shutdown happens, every year Congress works to divide up funds and assign money

to different departments and agencies.

They then pass this funding bill and the president signs it. When Congress is unable to agree on funding, the government enters a shutdown.

So, how did we get to the 2019 shutdown? On August 23, Congress passed a bill that funded three of the 12 departments. When deciding where to appropriate the remaining funds, on Sept. 18, Congress agreed to $1.3 billion for current bordersecurity, including fencing, levee walls and technology.

President Trump threatened to shutdown the government if $5 billion for border wall was not included. On Dec. 20, Congress worked on passing a bill but was unable to and that night the government shutdown.

What does the shutdown even mean and who is affected? Government employees deemed “nonessential” are sent home and do not work or get paid until the government reopens. NASA, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Housing and Development all have furloughed employees, alongside 52,000 IRS staff members.

Employees that are classified as “essential” must continue to work without pay. This means that workers have been required to show up to work every day for a month without pay for their

time there. Those working without pay include TSA workers, border patrol and coast guard employees and FBI and DEA agents.

A report from the senate appropriations committee puts the numbers of those affected at 420,000 for essential employees and 380,000 non-essential employees.

THE GEORGIA STATE PERSPECTIVE The Signal has worked to confirm that the Military Outreach Center, which handles educational benefits for military students and dependents, is unaffected by the shutdown. For students affected and in need, the campus food pantry, Panther Pantry, is open for assistance.

Former student, graduated Dec. 2018 According to Georgetown University’s Health Policy Institute, Medicaid will remain funded through Sept. 30, since that marks the end of the fiscal year.

According to Natalie Golloher, who graduated in Dec. 2018, the restrictions on Medicaid aren’t affecting everyone, just those affected significantly like pediatricians.

“My son’s Medicaid re-approval has been postponed until the shutdown is over,” Golloher said.

While the distribution of financial aid should not be impacted, students experiencing trouble with the online FAFSA application may reach a roadblock.

Freshman Farukh Abdul Rahim experienced trouble completing his application when trying to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

The FAFSA website indicates that some agencies that students rely on to complete FAFSA and work with the IRS are experiencing problems relating to the shutdown which may impact whether students get their full aid or not.

“I tried to call [the IRS] but nobody works there. This s*** lasted for a month and now my payment for classes is due today,” Rahim said.

Current student Atlanta has seen the local impacts with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport experiencing delays and nationally with regulating agencies operating at lower levels. Bruce notes some of the highlights in recent news.

“I think it’s insane the fact that the government shutdown is affecting people’s lives, and the fact that food isn’t being checked or regulated. I heard someone brought a gun on the [plane], that’s insane.”

Album 88 general manager and film student Kenleigh Watkins said her family was affected during the shutdown since they had to travel.

According to CNN, the FDA had only a few weeks left before their funding ran out during the shutdown, which would have resulted in a drop in productivity for approving new medicines.

“The government shutdown when my parents were traveling and there was a really long line. With the FDA, my mother has a lot of ailments and a lot of her drugs are FDA approved and if they are not approving these then what will have to those who are really sick,” she said.

Associate provost appointed GGC interim president Dr. Mary Beth Walker now juggling two senior positions ZACH SALLING Staff Reporter

G

eorgia State’s Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation Dr. Mary Beth Walker has been named interim president of Georgia Gwinnett College by the University System of Georgia on Jan. 12, 2019.

Walker is taking over for Dr. Stanley Preczewki, who’s resigned to lead Riverside Military Academy.

University System of Georgia’s Chancellor Steve Wrigley, a Georgia State graduate who was on board with the Georgia State and Georgia Perimeter merge, invited Walker to step into GGC’s presidential role.

“I was asked by Chancellor Steve Wrigley to step in as interim president at Georgia Gwinnett College while the search for the next president is carried out,” Walker said. “It is a very interesting place with the great mission of student success. I am happy to have the opportunity.”

During Walker’s time at Georgia State, she served as dean of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies from 2010 to 2017, increased the volume of externally funded research grants awarded to the school and integrated the School of Social Work and the department of Criminal Justice and Criminology to Andrew Young, among other accomplishments.

Walker recognizes GGC as another school rich in opportunity.

“GSU and GGC both have student success as their number one priority. Both GSU and GGC are accustomed to trying new pedagogical techniques and using technology to enhance student learning,” Walker said.

Georgia State offers programs such as the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development that engages underrepresented groups in science, initiated by neuroscience professor Kyle Frantz. Walker foresees similar projects blossoming at GGC’s campus.

“The wonderful program devised by Professor Kyle Frantz and her team can provide meaningful assistance for student who might not have previously considered a PhD program or professional school,” Walker said. “Our wonderful students at Georgia Gwinnett are similar to GSU students. I look forward to working with the GGC team as we evaluate coaching and advising programs.”

GGC currently implements a Grizzly Opportunities for

Leadership Development (GOLD), which prepares students for college and community leadership roles through training them with personal development programs, institutes and volunteer activities.

Georgia State’s influence could initiate collaboration, if not a merge, though Georgia State far exceeds GGC in size.

“GGC is much smaller than GSU, of course, with around 12,500 students. Our chief difference is that GGC is not a research university and there are no graduate programs. I am not aware of plans for a merger, but I do think there are certainly opportunities for collaboration,” Walker said.

Since Georgia State and Georgia Perimeter College’s merger, associate degree graduation rates from Perimeter have increased by 5 percent. Georgia State has initiated analytics tracking for Perimeter students to expand the university’s Panther Retention Grant program.

The University System of Georgia’s Chancellor Hank Huckaby said student support prompted the merge between a research university and access institution.

“We are very positive about the track record of Georgia State University in the way they advise and monitor and support their students, and this will have a great impact on the students at Georgia Perimeter College,” Huckaby said.

Additionally, the merge cemented Georgia State as the No. 2 largest university in Georgia. With larger student success and campuses, the merge naturally rakes in more revenue for Georgia State. Besides merges profiting students with more resources, merges also profit the USG. “The combining of a research university with essentially an access institution has been done and is being done in major large urban universities in other parts of the country,” Huckaby said.

USG hasn’t suggested a merge between Georgia State and GGC, but collaboration could further propel Georgia State as a leading research university titan through collegiate networking.

The Signal reached out to GGC’s former President Preczewki for comment on GGC’s transition and possible merge, but no response was received.

Preczewski served as president of GGC since 2014.

Under Preczewski’s leadership, GGC’s enrollment grew to more than 12,500 and U.S. News & World Report ranked them No. 10 in the “Top Public School in the Regional Colleges South” for 2019.

remarkable upward trajectory for over 12 consecutive years,” Preczewski said.

Preczewski earned a B.S. in engineering from Cornell University in 1980, an M.S. in engineering from the University of Massachusetts, an M.A. in national security strategy from the United States Naval War College, in addition to a Ph.D in higher education from the University of Missouri.

The former GGC president also lead two artillery units with the 2nd and 1st infantry Divisions. Preczewski was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and Airborne and Air Assault wings.

“President Preczewski is a true leader in every sense of the word,” said Wrigley. “He brought a wealth of experience to our youngest institution and guided GGC to continue its path of success. He will be greatly missed as an administrator, educator and friend.

Currently, GGC’s Presidential Search and Screen Committee accrued 429 responses and hundreds of comments from a survey given to the GGC community for their next president.

The USG is currently conducting a national search to secure a permanent presidential replacement for GGC. While GGC continues to scope out their next president, Walker welcomes the younger college with State influence .

“The faculty and staff are truly dedicated to the mission and I look forward to learning more about how current and future programs will impact student success at GGC.”

Student petitions against textbook

University rejects proposal, citing in-house research

tudents are unhappy with the Tutorials in Introductory Physics books and this petition is to propose that these books are removed from Georgia State University.”

This is the straight-to-the-point introductory line of a Georgia State student petition titled Stop The Tutorials that was available for students to read and sign online. The petition began on Nov. 5 and collected a total of 230 signatures before coming to a close as results were turned in to the university’s physics department on Dec. 5.

Sebastien Lepine, the department chair, and Brian Thoms, associate chair and physics undergrad advisor, have decided that Tutorials will remain in use, rejecting the petition.

The petition includes research with responses from 398 other universities across the nation on what their pre-lab consists of. This research wasn’t conducted by a group of students or a particular student organization – it was an independent undertaking by one student alone, computer science major Brennan Maddox.

“I noticed a lot of students were upset about it,” Maddox said. “So, I took it upon myself to voice the opinion of the students and bring it to the attention of the department.”

Lepine outlined the three main methods for teaching physics. These are the lecture, the lab and the new method of teaching – a recitation session – which is what Lepine and the physics department are implementing Tutorials for.

“By thinking about specific problems and writing down how they think a specific scenario would work. Students come up with their own understanding of how the world – and how physics – works,” Lepine said.

Georgia State physics students learn by all three methods. The lab session includes an hour for Tutorials assignment and then a two hour handson lab. Because of this, many students see the tutorials assignment as a pre-lab session.

Thoms said this is one of the biggest misconceptions of the petition, as the tutorials were not designed as a pre-lab, but as an entirely separate learning experience.

“Since we have a three-hour lab, we decided to make it convenient for students and include the tutorials as the first hour,” Thoms said. “We try to match the lab and Tutorials up, to cover the same concept if possible, but that is not the only goal of the Tutorials.”

Maddox acknowledges the misconception of the Tutorial serving as a pre-lab although he still sees fundamental problems with the text, and he isn’t the only student who feels this way.

“It was an excuse for the professors to not teach a lab rather than supplemental material,” Georgia State physics student Gary Dean said.

Maddox’s initial frustration with the text began with the cost and the requirement for every student to purchase the book individually to receive a grade in the lab.

The use of Tutorials began in 2013, when Georgia State was selected to become a PhysTEC comprehensive site, receiving $300,000 in grant money from the American Physical Society over a three-year period. This began what the university refers to as the lab redesign.

“This was part of a $300,000 grant, and about half of that was for redesigning the lab,” Thoms said. “So, this wasn’t only thought to be a good idea by us but also by people who give us money to do it.”

Thoms said that removing Tutorials from the classroom is possible at this point, as the grant came to a close in 2016.

However, they “have no intention of making a change,” Thoms said.

Brennan Maddox, a computer science major, launched a petition to remove a physics department book that many students are unhappy with.

reviews on the Tutorials, with some who praised the text and its “well-researched” qualities.

“It was almost like a cult,” Maddox said, jokingly. “Most of the research seemed biased, as it was done by the creators of the group, the Physics Education Group.”

Georgia State has done its own research on the success rates and student attitudes toward the program. The study found that at Georgia State after the lab redesign, there was a decrease in drop, fail and withdrawal rates in the two courses.

Physics 2211K decreased from 16 to 12 percent while Physics 2212K decreased from 14 to 9 percent. Maddox agreed that the lab redesign seems to be beneficial but doesn’t see the correlation between the Tutorials specifically.

The book isn’t exactly cheap when it comes to a college student’s budget, selling for $71.50 at the Georgia State Bookstore.

The petition notes that between the main lab book and the homework book, less than 40 percent of the material is used for the class, so some students don’t think it’s worth the cost and have asked the university to create their own material and questions.

“We would be more than happy to do this, but the university does not have the resources to do this,” Lepine said.

This development would require a team of faculty to set aside a large fraction of their time to create the material, and since faculty is limited and are currently teaching this would require hiring additional faculty to create the material, according to Lepine.

Maddox referred to a flyer for recruiting undergraduate learning assistants to teach the

Tutorials section of the class. He said that the LAs spend five to seven hours per week, one hour in class on teaching physics, and receive a $1,120 stipend per semester.

“It makes me think that if they are paying students to teach the Tutorials,” he said. “They could instead spend that hour class developing an assignment – a critical thinking problem.”

He said that these questions developed each week could be compiled and built upon each semester to create new material.

The department will be trying to find solutions to better accommodate students with this new learning method, according to Lepine. One idea from the department is to schedule the lab, lecture and Tutorials section separately.

Maddox doesn’t see the length of the combined lab and tutorials session as a problem. He said he thinks there’s something that they could better be spending their time on.

“I don’t think that’s fixing the problem, it’s just an attempt to put a band-aid on it,” Maddox said. “I know I used this term before, but I think an actual pre-lab would be better, to bridge the lecture and the main lab.”

Although the university has denied the request of Maddox and those who signed the petition, he is satisfied with his work and hopes he set something in motion.

“During my university experience, I’ve come across little problems along the way, things that you usually just brush off,” Maddox said. “But when this came along, I thought, ‘You know I could at least try to do something about this.’”

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final home was sold to the National Park Foundation, according to The New York Times. The house is being prepped so that it can be opened to the public and serve as a looking glass into King’s world and interactions with his family. The house is located in Vine City, an Atlanta neighborhood. The house will be open no sooner than a year from now, as officials are survey and work to prepare the property for public traffic. It was owned by Bernice King, daughter of the civil rights leader.

GLOBAL Venezuela torn over who is their president

Venezuela’s incumbent president, Nicolas Maduro, has declared that his opposition Juan Guaido has gone against the country’s normal election procedures by declaring himself its leader, according to Reuters.

Thousands have taken to protest Maduro. European countries, the United States and other western countries support Guaido’s claim to the presidency. However, Russia and Turkey have thrown their support behind Maduro. Maduro has declined to proceed with a fair reelection but is open to diplomatic talks.

Kell Hall’s demolition awaiting Kemp’s approval Historical and environmental reports causing timeline delays WILL SOLOMONS News Editor

eorgia State’s oldest building is nearing the end of its life, with years of delayed plans and uncertain deadlines in the past.

Kell Hall, the university’s oldest and arguably now most infamous building, is slated for demolition beginning sometime in March. The project was first proposed by University President Mark Becker in 2013. Now, six years later, the project is finally nearing its execution.

The greenlight to begin tearing down the renovated parking deck was given by the Board of Regents before, and now there are only a couple more steps before demolition can begin.

Before anything moves forward, the university must compile an Environmental Effects Report which serves to assess the impact on the surrounding nature and soil. “[An] Environmental Effects Report is required for state funded demolition projects to identify potential impacts on natural, physical and cultural environments. We are retaining an external consultant who is qualified to prepare such a report,” Vakamudi said.

Once that is completed, the next step of the project will begin: getting approval from state offices.

“Once completed we will send it to Board of Regents along with our demolition request letter for approval,” Vice President for Facilities Management Services Division Ramesh Vakamudi said.

The new year brought in newly elected Governor Brian Kemp, who is now tasked with signing off on the project before the University System of Georgia and Board of Regents can give Georgia State the all-clear to begin bringing in the wrecking ball.

“It is my understanding that BOR staff will send the necessary [paperwork] to the Governor’s Office for his sign off,” Vakamudi said.

Because of this, it will still take the two months before students will see the machinery and hear the demolition and subsequent construction of a green way.

After the university gets approved, it will hire a contractor to execute the plans for demolition. The contractor will also work with the university to determine the best way to keep pedestrians safe in the high-traffic areas outside of Kell Hall. “[We] will develop and finalize the pedestrian safety plan for the entire Kell Hall area in collaboration with

the demolition contractor. We should have contractor details confirmed by mid-February. All the occupants and departments are relocated from Kell Hall and it currently closed,” Vakamudi said.

At a Student Government Association meeting on Jan. 24, Atlanta Executive Vice President Ayesha Iqbal said that they had been told previously by Jerry Rackliffe that the

It is still unclear when the official date will be that the $7.7 million project will officially begin, but it will most likely be done by the 2020 academic year.

Georgia State hunts the dark web for threats Cybersecurity project extends research alongside private firm JACELL BLAND Staff Reporter

D

avid Maimon, director of the ECB and a NextGen associate professor in Georgia’s new Cyber Training Center, has recently revealed his collaboration with Venafi, a privately held cybersecurity company.

The Evidence Based Cyber Security group of Georgia State works primarily on cracking down on cyber crimes.

Maimon and his team are composed of largely of faculty members from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies’ Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology and Georgia State’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Venafi has signed a $79,000, one-year contract with Georgia State’s Evidence-based Cybersecurity Research Group to search the dark web for any activity that has the potential to impact its clients’ machine identities. Machine identities are digital identities used online by an individual or organization. These identities serve a purpose of securing personal data online in a sufficient manner.

Venafi is responsible for catering to a multitude of companies to protect their vital information from cyberattacks and beyond.

Georgia State’s Evidence-Based Cybersecurity Research Group has showcased its work previously on Oct. 12 which was held

at Georgia State’s Buckhead Campus at 200 Tower Place as a program in the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce’s Atlanta Cyber Week.

“Folks in Venafi were aware of my work and are interested in gathering evidence from the dark net,” Maimon said. “Since my research team in GSU is already collecting data from several online markets and platform on the dark net this was a perfect fit.”

Maimon also revealed that he and his team began working with Venafi around September of 2018. When deciding on the amount of funding Venafi negotiated with Georgia State, $79,000 was their potential goal. “$79,000 is what Venafi has allocated for this project so far.

We hope this will be a successful partnership and that we will continue collaborating with them on future projects,” Maimon said.

Maimon himself was motivated to get involved in this project with colleague Mike Mcguire.

“My colleague Mike McGuire from Surrey university in the UK and I are interested in online darknet environments,” Maimon said.

In addition, Maimon has voiced his opinion on the subject matter on multiple occasions since working with his team.

“We want people to think of this group and our work as a resource for guiding these targets—and guardians—in respect to policy, tools and approaches to conduct better cybersecurity.

That’s what this group and our approach are all about,” Maimon said.

CNN’s Bruce Schmeier expressed his concern on cybersecurity, as well as the government’s relationship with cybersecurity. California has already made progress on this issue.

In just a few days before the 2018 midterm elections, Georgia’s Republican candidate, Brian Kemp accused Georgia’s Democratic Party of hacking into the state’s voter registration base.

“It falls upon lawmakers to create laws that protect consumers.

While the US government is largely absent in this area of consumer protection, the state of California has recently stepped in and started regulating the Internet of Things, or “IoT” devices sold in the state -- and the effects will soon be felt worldwide,” Schneier said.

One of Maimon and his team’s main goals is collecting unique data with the goal of helping the cybersecurity industry to generate cutting edge security tools. Maimon found the project to be a great opportunity for him and his team to demonstrate their skills and capabilities.

As the project moves forward, Maimon and his team will continue to get involved with more companies and cybersecurity professional — both local and international — and help support their cybersecurity operations while employing their unique evidence based cybersecurity approach.

Students flock to socialism, but why?

Capitalism declines among students; not so much for older generations ZACHARY VINSON Staff Coloumnist

A

2018 Gallup poll found that 51 percent of individuals aged 18-29 hold a positive view of socialism, whereas only 30 percent of respondents aged 50-64 feel the same. What could cause such a significant generational difference?

As with just about everything, there are multiple factors to explore, but first let’s define the terms. Socialism is “a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state.” Socialism is somewhat different from democratic socialism in that democratic socialism upholds a democratically elected government, but both are very similar economically. For simplicity, I will be talking about both, when referring to socialism.

IT’S NOT FAIR

Humans and all primates have a sense of fairness that does not need to be taught. Arthur Dobrin explains in Psychology Today that “fairness is a concept that is hardwired into primates, as it is with humans,” which comes from the need for social animals to cooperate. College students would be particularly interested in fairness because, as a Harvard Business Study states, “as children grow older, they become increasingly concerned with appearing fair to others, which… [explains] some of their increased tendency to behave fairly.”

College students are catapulted from a world where they have been taught that equality of outcome is righteous, into a world where fairness will never occur. Some people are smarter, wealthier or have an easier road in life, which goes against all the principles of fairness that students have spent their entire childhoods developing. This inherent sense of inequality that must be corrected causes many students turn to socialism as a way to achieve fairness.

With such a significant difference in population, democratic socialism in Sweden works vastly different than in the U.S. with sixty times the population.

Is Nordic success even due to their democratic socialist policies? Swedish researcher Nima Sanandaji said in 2016 “that the Nordic countries are so successful due to an exceptional culture that emphasizes social cohesion, hard work, and individual responsibility.”

Even more inconvenient is that despite the culture, “four … of the five Nordic countries” have elected center-right governments because democratic socialism has lost its appeal. These governments have cut taxes, allowed for-profit companies into the welfare sector and opened the market to state monopolies.

Speaking of taxes, the top marginal tax rate in Denmark is 60.04 percent and, if enacted in America, would apply to everyone making over $60,000. By comparison the U.S. top marginal tax rate is 46.3 percent and applies to anyone making above $400,000. The difference is that Nordic countries have a relatively flat tax rate, where the U.S. has one of the most progressive tax rates.

The Nordic utopia of democratic socialism is nothing but a mirage that students and America can see but are unable to reach.

OVERWHELMING BIAS IN EDUCATION

The findings suggest a troubling amount of political agreement; the ratio of Democrats to Republicans is 10:1.

“78.2% of the academic departments in [the] sample have either zero Republicans, or so few as to make no difference.”

Mitchell Langbert, the author of the study, said that “political homogeneity is problematic because it biases research and teaching and reduces academic credibility.” The numbers are even worse if you remove two military college outliers; then the Democrat:Republican ratio jumps to 12:1.

This is not to say that there must be the same amount of people from each political leaning in teaching positions, but the overwhelming difference suggests a widespread left-leaning political bias by most professors. It seems likely that this phenomenon has had direct impact on the increased likelihood of college students to view socialism favorably.

Many critical voices condemn students who support socialism as bad people who want to take their money, but the motivation is actually the opposite. It is the compassion of students, among other factors, that push them to right the perceived wrongs of the world through socialism. Regardless of how pure the intentions, students need to understand that Socialism doesn’t work and has never worked.

This is a point often dismissed as a tin foil hat conspiracy theory, but the numbers produced by the National Association of Scholars is staggering. A recent NAS study asked about the “political registration of Ph.D.- holding professors at top-tier liberal arts colleges,” and included “a

One of the favorite claims of democratic socialists like Bernie Sanders or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is that the government should provide free healthcare and secondary education to everyone. I am sure we can all relate to high costs and unreasonable fees associated with college and healthcare.

Students relate to the likes of democratic socialists because they are collectively facing trillions in student loans and thus identify with politicians who appear to sympathize with their plight.

As a college student myself, I can most definitely appreciate the idea of free college and healthcare, but nothing is ever free in government. It simply shifts the cost from one group of people to another.

COMPASSIONATE HEARTS

When talking to proponents of socialism, you will often hear that we need to take from the rich and give to the poor, just like Robin Hood. After all, the rich guy won’t miss one million dollars, because he has 40 million more. On the surface, it does seem compassionate. One person, who has more, gives to one who has less, but that’s the problem. Socialism takes money from one person in order to give it to one who is “more” deserving. The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but in this case the road to thievery is paved with compassionate hearts. It is not compassionate to take money from someone who earned it through voluntary transaction with others at point of government gun.

THE NORDIC MIRAGE

Another way that democratic socialism, and those who advocate for it, entices students is by referencing the Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden as democratic socialist utopias. The aforementioned countries happen to be doing quite well under quasi-democratic socialist governments, but there is some important context to consider.

For example, the population of all the Nordic countries combined is roughly 27 million, which is less than that of the state of Texas. In comparison, the U.S. has 300 million people.

New Netflix series normalizes stalking behavior Why the “good guy” narrative is dangerously scary MYA GRANT

N

etflix’s “YOU” presents predatory and manipulative traits that coincide with many of the “good guys” we experience daily. The new series is a thriller drama that focuses on the ins and outs of a young man, Joe Goldberg, who just can’t let go of his love interest, Guinevere Beck. With the help of technology and social media, Goldberg stalks Beck and begins to meddle with her life.

In case you haven’t watched it yet, this is a spoiler alert.

“YOU” isn’t the only stalking or thriller series I’ve seen, but it is the most interesting one because the narrative of the story is framed from the view of the stalker. Goldberg’s thoughts are present throughout the series from the beginning when he’s analyzing Beck to the end when he’s reflecting on the decisions he’s made to “win her over.”

The series’ story is also interesting in the way Goldberg uses social media as a tactic to stalk Beck. We often keep our location data enabled on our phones and frequently tag friends or check-in when we’re going out. These small features were built for certain reasons originally but have since been abused by people like Goldberg to monitor and stalk others.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with finding your crush on social media and looking around on their page to see who they really are —

letter to the editor Dear Editor-in-Chief Daniel, I sincerely appreciated your column on the visit to Israel you and other GSU leaders participated in.

I thank you for your journalistic desire to report on the lesser known activities of the school that may go unappreciated or obscured, purposely or not. I believe that pieces such as yours do help more than they harm; that more information is always better than less.

My first reaction was appreciation of an eye-opening experience for those involved. I therefore must agree that such a trip is a net benefit to the student body.

Anytime an individual is given the opportunity to visit a foreign country, regardless of the reasons, they will grow as person. Their new appreciation of how others live and better understanding of how the world works makes them better leaders. They have firsthand experiences to share with those they directly interact with. Clearly this benefits the campus as a whole, especially when their influence and level connection with the rest of the student body is taken into account.

My second reaction is to worry about world views being distorted. I hope those few Palestinians the group met, and the short time allotted to discuss with them was enough to give a balanced learning experience. I suspect this was not the case. In light of this I think it would be helpful for future students involved in such trips to be made aware of the potential bias they may be exposed to. Maybe I’m worrying about nonexistent problems, but I feel it is prudent to ensure students (especially ones that influence the student body) are exposed to all sides of an issue.

we’re all guilty of it whether you want to admit it or not. But Goldberg takes it to a whole new extreme. He visits the same places Beck visits, although he’s never been in that area, and he begins to slowly push himself into her life without her even knowing it.

Although I applaud the writers and directors for putting this series together, I can’t help but to think of other stalking movies like “The Boy Next Door,” “Obsessed,” “Unforgettable,” “You Get Me” and “The Perfect Guy” and how they’ve shaped the image of stalking for both men and women.

These movies are obviously for entertainment purposes and will probably leave audiences thinking, “Wow, that character was crazy.” But no one thinks about the seriousness behind stalking and predatory behavior; just saying someone is crazy isn’t enough.

Predators and escalated stalking don’t get addressed enough in these movies and series; rather, they are glamorized and normalized as if this is an acceptable trait to have. And sadly, these movies and series reflect what goes on in society today and how it’s easily covered up or looked over.

Shows like “YOU” are meant for entertainment and excitement but it’s important that we take lessons out of shows and movies like these and be cautious, because it is likely that someone else could be watching the same thing and get some dangerous ideas. So, let’s do society a favor and put an end to all the Joe Goldbergs we may know or come in contact with.

tudent Press Freedom Day is Wednesday, Jan. 30, which is one of our most important holidays here at Georgia State’s only independent, student-run newspaper.

Having a student press that is unhindered by university or governmental regulation allows students access to an expanded breadth of coverage on any — and we mean any — topic that needs to be covered. We have investigated research grants, followed development projects, interviewed exceptional students, discussed issues in faculty diversity and broke news on tragedies our campus has faced.

Because we’re filtered only by journalistic integrity, we are untouched by ulterior motives or muddied politics. Our paper isn’t funded by some national corporation that pulls the strings on our content. Our content is strictly derived from student observation and investigation.

This freedom allows us to tell your stories and also provides you a platform to speak. Adjacent to this editorial is a letter to the editor, a type of public column which allows any individual to directly speak to our campus. We continue to provide this opportunity for you to directly engage with us and your peers. You speak, and we listen.

Our autonomy also allows us to hold the university accountable. Consider when D.W. Pine, former editor of The Signal, investigated a seemingly “political” contract with a cafeteria that prevented other restaurants from coming to campus. That was back in 1989. Still today,n faculty, staff and students alike are able to understand what’s happening on our campus from an objective third party. Through open records requests, interviews with Georgia State’s top administrators and various other journalistic practices, we deliver the scoop on

university news that affects you.

Our area of operation is also much more catered toward students than other outlets. You won’t always see the Atlanta Journal-Constitution or WSB-TV — both exceptional news outlets — reporting on university-wide issues. We bring the news as local as it gets, straight to the hallways and sidewalks of Georgia State.

In the past, students at other universities have fought for their right to work without prior review from university personnel. Thankfully, we have not been challenged on that, but if someone wanted us to stop printing, we’d be prepared to stand our ground. On a national scale, if all the news outlets were to go silent regarding our government or nationwide events, there would be chaos. The same principle applies here. If we don’t print, students will remain uninformed. We must do our job.

That’s why we invite you to engage with us, drop us tips or leads and follow us to stay in the know of what’s going on around campus. Without your support and readership, we can’t hold people accountable or inform you of what’s going on.

Google’s Project Stream is a student’s dream

Endless video games — no console required JOSH WINSTON Staff Reporter

H

igh-end gaming PCs can cost up to thousands of dollars and take up valuable space in the characteristically cramped living spaces of students.

Google hopes to alleviate all of these problems with Project Stream.

HOW IT STREAMS

Modern PC games are often elaborately detailed with expansive creations which simulate the real world and require much processing power. And because this processing power is so highly demanded, it is usually pretty expensive.

Instead of processing video games locally, with all the whirring fans and processor heat that entails, Google plans to offload that computation to it’s strong servers, and then stream a high definition, high frame rate encodeded video to players.

The idea is that anyone with a modern laptop or PC should be able access Project Stream, no matter their processor or graphics limitations. All they have to do is open up a recent version of Chrome, go to Projectstream.google.com and play their favorite title.

The only requirement besides a computer is a reliable

internet connection. Dorm rooms may not always have room for a huge gaming PC setup, but they do usually have wifi.

Google Stream only requires a streaming rate of 15 Mbps which is about the average connection required to stream Netflix comfortably.

Right now, Project Stream is still in beta with a trial program offering a free play of “Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey” to anyone who signs up and is selected to participate in the program.

Players will even receive a free copy of the game to keep after the beta is over.

Because it’s still in the early beta stages, not many people have had a chance to try it out, but Mark Knapp at TechRadar did get the opportunity. He said, “Overall, the graphics are fairly good throughout, especially when playing on a highbandwidth connection using ethernet cables.”

With Project Stream, Google is continuing an ongoing trend of offloading intensive computer processes to the cloud and then streaming back the video, making for a smoother and less expensive user experience.

On its blog, Google said, “We’re inspired by the game creators who spend years crafting these amazing worlds, adventures and experiences, and we’re building technology that we hope will support and empower that creativity.”

Of course, game streaming is nothing new, but with with a company like Google getting involved, the search engine giant has the potential to permanently reshape the way people access video games.

You’re practicing witchcraft without knowing it Urban Outfitters is bringing Wicca into the mainstream ALEX QUARTERMAN Staff Reporter

W

icca, also referred to as witchcraft, has been on the rise in the last 30 years. About 1.5 million people practice today, which is a sharp rise from the 8,000 who practiced in 1990 and 340,000 in 2008. Objects of the religion are becoming more and more prominent as society adapts to them in a rising trend. Loosely based off Paganism, Wicca uses elements such as the pentagram, crystals, tarot cards and spells, many of which are entering the mainstream.

Owner and founder of Phoenix and Dragon: Metaphysical Bookstore, Candace Apple, created the store in order to form a community dedicated to healing and peace. Recently, she’s seen more people coming in asking about Wicca.

“We’ve seen more traffic come through the store the last few months. I don’t really know why, but I’m really happy about it. Some of my employees say it’s becoming more popular for people to be spiritual rather than religious,” Apple said.

Apple’s employees could be right. Prevalent stores like Urban Outfitters have begun to sell “starter” packages including many Wicca staples such as sage, amethyst, palo santo wood, tarot cards and trendy books including simple spells, leaving many practicing Wiccans concerned.

“I don’t love that stores like Urban Outfitters sell stuff for witchcraft because a lot of people don’t know what they’re doing. But as the same time, it’s a good way to get people to look into Wicca and become a part of it,” Jaden Potts said.

One of the most prominent of these divine items are crystals.

For those practicing Wicca, wrapped crystals act as objects of energy, giving protection and safety.

“I mostly use my crystals. I like to charge them in the sun or cleansed water. Then I’ll carry them around with me wherever I go to bring their energy with me. I’ll light my candles and arrange my crystals around me in a circle, so I can channel their energy,” Nicole Lucaci said.

At Phoenix and Dragon, Apple said crystals are very popular.

“We have a section in the front that pertains mostly to Wicca,” she said. “Our most popular items are usually crystals because they look pretty, and they’re great for people who are just starting their spiritual path.”

Crystals aren’t solely used in Wicca — people have long believed that they enhance spiritual growth and bring good luck. Romans would use them to bring them good fortune when heading into battle, Chinese would use needles tipped with crystals for acupuncture and Egyptians would use them in

rituals for burying the dead.

Today, wrapped crystal jewelry isn’t restricted to any one religion. It can be seen around the necks of many of the hottest celebrities and is sold everywhere from Urban Outfitters to Walmart.

“It’s kind of weird seeing this trend take off and then people don’t even realize that some of the things they’re doing are part of being a Wiccan,” Nicole Lucaci said.

Another item of witchcraft you can find on the shelves of Urban Outfitters is tarot cards. These cards are used to gain insight into the future as well as answer any questions the one receiving the reading may ask.

“I like to use tarot cards especially for my friends. It’s funny to see them freak out about how correct they are,” Emily Wilson said.

The beliefs of Wicca are centered around energy. By lighting certain candles or incenses, those practicing can attract positive energy into their lives. However, Wiccas highly discourage people from dabbling in magic without learning how to properly practice. Wiccas believe dabbling to be dangerous due to the possibility of bringing unwanted, harmful energy into your life.

“My grandma never wanted to teach me that much about magic because she knew it could be dangerous if I didn’t do it correctly. So now, when I see all these people buying Wicca stuff at Urban Outfitters or whatever, it makes me mad because they don’t even know what they’re doing and karma’s gonna come for them,” Emily Wilson said.

From a Wiccan’s point of view, praying to the God and the Goddess can bring good karma into the world. Since the Goddess is tied to the earth, some believe that by praying to the Goddess they’re helping the environment and by honoring her they can lead to healthier plants and animals on the Earth.

“It’s given me a better outlook on life. Now I realize that if you put good things out into the world, you’ll get good things back. It’s not just beneficial to me, it’s also good for the world because I’m putting these positive energies out there to counteract the bad energy,” Nicole Lucaci said.

And while Wicca may just be entering the spotlight, it is a practice that has been around for centuries, sometimes unknowingly running through family lines.

“My great-grandma was actually a Wicca, but I had no idea because my dad was really against it, so he never talked about it,” Nicole Lucaci said.

Like many religions, Wicca can be passed down from generation to generation. Families rather and pass down traditions and grow their bonds with each other.

“My family is from Scotland, and my grandma is a witch.

According to her, my family comes from a long line of witches

and the youngest daughter of every generation is meant to be the family witch. I don’t get to be the family witch, but my sister does. My grandma has taught me some stuff though about practicing magic, and I’ve learned a lot on my own,” Wilson said.

Although Wicca can be passed down, it can just as easily be learned. Today, young witches can look to the internet for getting started.

“I was always interested in ghosts and occult stuff, so when I moved into my own house, I started dabbling in Wicca and learning as much as could. I joined some online communities with other Wiccans who were just starting out, and it was really helpful. We would share what we’ve learned and what spells we’ve done that worked or didn’t work,” Jaden Potts said.

WHO DO THEY PRAY TO? Wiccans pray to the God and the Goddess which are thought to represent everything masculine and feminine in the world.

Some Wiccans pray to lesser deities, but most pray solely to these two. They can be called different names and can be represented in different forms, animal or plant.

A common name for the God, usually pictured with horns, is Cernunnos, and the Goddess is often called Gaia, an earth goddess who represents motherhood.

DO THEY HAVE HOLIDAYS? There are eight annual holidays, or Sabbats, Wiccans celebrate, revolving around the seasons and yearly cycles.

One of the most common ones to celebrate is the Midwinter Yule during December. For most, this time would be called Christmas.

Some witches celebrate all eight holidays, others only celebrate their favorites and some don’t celebrate any of them.

WHERE DO THEY WORSHIP? In witches’ homes you’ll find a sacred place known as an altar where they keep the tools they use for magic. Most altars have similar items, but like everything else in Wicca, it’s unique to the witch. Wiccans will use pentagrams on their altar for protection, shielding them from negative energy as they do spells and meditate.

Another common item is candles; each color is thought to represent something different. If a Wiccan wants to summon more love into their life, they may light a pink candle to attract it.

F

rom GOTHBOICLIQUE to James Blake, many artists in recent years have shown to be in opposition to joyous composition, substituting positive tracks with more melancholy tunes.

Researchers at the University of California-Irvine performed a study that showcased a gradual increase in “sadness” regarding popular music over the last 30 years. Tempo and key were the two barometers for this experiment, meaning that music consisting of a lower tempo and a minor key rather than a major key were considered “more sad.”

“The study stresses that this gradual decrease in the happiness index does not mean that all songs in 1985 were happy and all modern songs are sad; instead, the findings only point to a general trend in properties of the music and the corresponding moods,” Complex pop culture writer Julia Pimentel said.

But in no way is the industry in complete emotional turmoil as pop artists like Drake, whose music dictates night club culture, can still force hip gyration at a single note. However, it can be deduced that the music industry as a whole sounds like it’s been having a bad day, with some artists claiming this more than others.

Singer-songwriter James Blake has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind, and after the anticipated release of his latest album, Assume Form, he once again rose his head above the publicity to make a claim.

“If I can’t talk about emotions in music... If I can’t talk about those things, and I am anxious and I am depressed and I am sad, then what the f*ck else am I going to talk about?,” Blake said in an interview with Dazed.

Expressing mental health problems is central to Blake’s discography and to that of many artists in last decade. The recent plethora of sad music may be a preface to a bigger problem.

Psychologist and University of Rochester graduate Danielle Guild contributes the recent rise of more personal, emotional music to a rise in many factors.

“Technology isolates people, parent expectations have never been higher, money controls everything and job competition is only increasing. As a result, things such as music and TV tend to reflect this behavior,” Guild said.

This isn’t the first time music has reflected societal challenges.

Vietnam War and Cold War era musicians adversely accepted difficult times as bands such as The Beatles handed out peaceful messages and optimistic wishes. Highlighting the best of times during the worst of times was consistent throughout the world as well.

Given its reputation for glorifying lavish-living rap music has shown a drastic change in subject matter as of the last decade.

“For every rap song bragging about the glamors out newfound fame and riches, there’s a song about the hardships. Sometimes these songs glamorize the use of drugs, the need to carry a weapon or one night stands. Rappers who have been in the game long enough know this is merely a halo effect that can lead to paths of addiction and loneliness,” Medium writer Michael Beausoleil said.

With rap subgenre “emo rap” taking an extended stay in the rap game, the genre has been lobbied by many artists.

“Rappers are now more open than ever, and this gives them freedom to express themselves with less social influence. Listeners are still exposed to dangerous and harmful substances, but the lyrics advise them to proceed with caution. In this music, rappers have no shame in having feelings. In fact, it’s expected to have emotion,” Beausoleil says.

Beginning in the early 2010s, Swedish rapper Yung Lean with producers Yung Gud and Yung Sherman formed the collective aptly named Sadboys. Lean’s music consisted of nostalgic elements and

ushered many musicians into “sad rap,” a predecessor to “emo rap.”

Artists such as Bones and his collective, TeamSesh, similarly retained the “sad rap” sound. GOTHBOICLIQUE frontrunners Lil Peep, Wicca Phase Eternal Springs, Coldhart, Nedarb and many others rebranded “sad rap” to what is now considered “emo rap” with their formation in the mid 2010s.

Though it was not until Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3” did “emo rap” begin to infringe upon the mainstream sound.

“In the song “XO TOUR Llif3,” Uzi raps about an

argument with his girlfriend where she threatens to harm herself as a result of the emotional pain she’s feeling. Uzi, feeling that his relationship has gone to extremes, taunts that he only cares money now (hence the most recognizable line: “all my friends are dead,” referring to the dead presidents on dollar bills),” Beausoleil says.

he Super Bowl is returning to Atlanta for the first time since 2000 when the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans squared off against each other. Fast forward 19 years and the Rams are back, but this time they are based out of Los Angeles. They will play against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII. Remember the last time New England and Atlanta were involved in a Super Bowl? Maybe 28-3 rings a bell. But luckily this time for Falcons fans, the New Orleans Saints won’t be taking over the city too.

With the Super Bowl being in Atlanta this year, there’ll will be plenty to do around the city. Check out this list for things to do during the big week.

Seniors prepare to enter the workforce

Saying goodbye to fields, courts and Georgia State sports JOSHUA FIFE

M

any Georgia State athletes are beginning their final semester with the university. Much like the first year, the final year can be both an exciting and terrifying

time.

Freshmen are at the beginning of a new chapter that is often touted as “the best years of your life”. Seniors, on the other hand, are plunged into the real world, and rarely do people reminisce over the first few months of post-graduation job searching with the same nostalgia as their undergraduate years.

In both cases the fear of the unknown can make it a difficult time. For seniors, this unknown has a much heavier burdon, as the countless resources that alleviate the pressure for students get snatched away and student loans come back to bite. “[I’m] most stressed about finding a job because basketball didn’t allow me to get much experience, and I am scared no one will hire me,” senior guard Kierra Henry said.

College already goes by quickly, but when your days are filled with practices, training, study hall and games, it makes the time fly by even faster.

“These past four years, it goes by so quick man. You can’t take these days for granted,” senior linebacker Chase Middleton said.

Senior athletes can be both a gift and a curse for coaches.

On one hand they bring experience, developed talent and familiarity with the system. On the other, they have to be replaced.

Football, soccer, volleyball and cross country have already finished their seasons, and the seniors that helped propel these teams to victory are already leaving coaches with some gaping holes to fill.

Middleton was a leader and team captain for the Panthers’ defense this year. The Panthers are losing five senior starters from last season’s defense, along with three from the offense.

Georgia State men’s soccer will also have a brand new look next season thanks to graduation.

They will rely heavily on young talent to carry the torch after losing its seven seniors. Last season, head coach Brett Surrency brought in a 10-man freshman class to accompany the other nine returning players in writing the next chapter for Georgia State soccer.

Some seniors, like Hannes Burmeister, have already solidified their spots in Georgia State athletics history.

Burmeister may have not had the senior year he had expected, but he was able to shine when the team needed him most. He had a breakout sophomore season where he lead the Sun Belt Conference in goals (11) and points (26), but went goalless during his final regular season with only one assist.

However, it was in the Sun Belt title match that he performed the best. Burmeister exploded for three goals, one of which tied up the match at 2-2 before the third gave Georgia State a 1-point advantage.

Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

The team is also losing seniors Liam Fitzsimmons, Lukas Joyner and Max Hemmings, all of whom had large roles on the 11-win, championship team.

Not all Georgia State senior seasons are over. Spring sports are still in full swing with plenty of competition left.

Several sports have senior athletes still trying to compete for conference titles before competing for post-graduation jobs.

“It’s mixed emotions right now,” senior forward Jeff Thomas said. “I’m trying to stay focused on the basketball season because, you know, we need all of the focus. So [I’m putting] all the focus in basketball that I can, but also I’m about to start a new life so I’m tryna think of what my plans are gonna be after I graduate.”

The Ohio-native is currently sitting in Georgia State’s Top 10 for all-time 3-pointers made, attempted and 3-point percentage.

Thomas and the three other seniors on the team are hoping to be the first men’s basketball team to win back-to-back conference championships and give coach Hunter his third trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Thomas, Malik Benlevi, Devin Mitchell and Jordan Tyson have been through a lot together in the past four years. They’ve donated shoes and competed internationally in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, the Dominican Republic and the Cayman Islands. They’ve won a conference title and earned a trip to New Orleans for the March Madness Tournament.

They even took down Georgia Tech (65-58) and Georgia (91-67), claiming the title of “Georgia’s Best College Basketball Team” and a viral tweet in the Georgia State community “Honestly, I think when this senior group leaves, we’re going to the best Georgia State team to ever come out,” Thomas said to The Signal before the season began.

The Georgia State women’s basketball team is taking some notable losses this year as well, including seniors Kierra Henry, K.K. Williams and Allison Johnson.

The Panthers have found a new purpose under head coach Gene Hill, who took over the program this summer. Hill brought in a veteran staff and reshaped the team’s identity.

“We have already won more games than we won last year,” senior guard Kierra Henry said.

“The team is also way more positive than past teams I have been on.“ Women’s basketball is currently at 10-9, a huge improvement considering they only won eight

games last season and finished 8-22.

Devastating loss in front of sold-out crowd Men’s basketball split games, fall to No. 2 in conference DANIEL RICHARDSON Staff Reporter

I

n front of one of the best home crowds the team has seen this year, Georgia State fell 81-68 to Texas State (17-3, 6-1), who took over sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt Conference. The loss stands as only the second conference loss this season, the first coming against Troy on the road.

The Panthers started the game with what head coach Ron Hunter defined as “low energy” and trailed 10-2, prompting Hunter to call a timeout less than three minutes in.

“We weren’t very good tonight at all,” coach Hunter said after the game. “Give a lot of credit to Texas State. I thought they played harder, they were more physical. I thought we were soft tonight, [and] I thought we played with no energy, no passion and [Texas State] did.”

The game was defined by Texas State’s fluid, efficient offense.

The Bobcats moved the ball with precision to open shooters as they shot 47 percent from the field and 44 percent from long range and tallied 18 assists for the game – Georgia State ended with 11. The fourth-ranked team in terms of assists in the Sun Belt showed why they have been successful in that regard all season.

In the second half of the game, the Bobcats used a fourminute, 18-0 scoring run to go up by 20 and put the game out of reach after the Panthers were only down by two points.

Seniors Jeff Thomas and Devin Mitchell carried the load for the Panthers in the game scoring 19 points and 20 points respectively. Thomas and Mitchell combined to make nine of the Panthers’ 11 made 3-pointers in the contest.

Before the loss to Texas State, the Panthers had not lost to a conference opponent at home.

“So at the end of the day we’re looking up at a team.m,” Hunter said. “For the first time this year there’s a team above us.

It doesn’t matter what your record is, doesn’t matter what your

record is, doesn’t matter what you’ve done, doesn’t matter who you beat this year… “One team in this conference is going to the NCAA Tournament, period,” The Georgia State Panthers (15-6, 6-2) “fought” for a 77-71 win against UT Arlington (9-12, 5-3) Saturday night with D’Marcus Simonds playing only three minutes in the second half. The team’s leading scorer sat out much of a closely contested second half as he dealt with the “pressures of the game” according to Hunter.

“You know it’s your last month for the most part and you know the draft you know all the things that are there and you’re trying to win a championship,” Hunter said. “To live with those pressures is a really tough thing, and he’s doing a great job of it and sometimes it gets to you.”

“And what I thought was impressive about D’Marcus even at halftime, he was frustrated, and said ‘coach, mentally I don’t have it. Let those other guys get it done. If you need me, I’m there.’”

Georgia State led the game in the first half by as many as 15 before the Mavericks used a 17-2 run to tie the Panthers with 29 points at the half.

The Panthers were coming into the game riding a season long two-game losing streak at home and have seen their grip on the conference lead ceded to Texas State.

“I thought our kids earned it, and [they] earned without [Simonds] playing,” Hunter said. “So, kudos to my kids -- I’m really happy in the way they stepped up.”

Thomas contributed 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and missed only one of his six 3-point attempts.

Sophomore Kane Williams scored 14 points and served out four of his five assists in the second half. With Simonds on the bench, Williams led the way defensively with two steals and made sure the Panthers operated efficiently in the half-court.

“I thought Kane was really, really big handling the basketball,” Hunter said. “For the most part he was the only ball-handler on the floor for us, usually we have he and D’Marcus out there. I thought he did a tremendous job of doing what he is really good at and moving the ball around.”

In their game against Texas State, Georgia State’s men’s basketball team lost their No. 1 spot in the Sun Belt Conference. It now solely belongs to the Bobcats.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SPLITS

Georgia State’s women’s basketball (10-8, 4-4) traveled to Texas to compete against two conference rivals – Texas State and UT Arlington – last week. The Panthers didn’t let up against the Texas State Bobcats (9-11, 4-4) on Thursday night as they prevailed over them 57-34.

In the Texas State win, Allison Johnson led Georgia State in scoring with 19 points, which also stood as the senior’s career high in points. Jada Lewis added in 14 points of her own and helped the team set the tone on the defensive end with two steals.

Texas State played an uphill battle against Georgia State for much of the contest, particularly in the second quarter where the team could only produce two points as the Panthers poured in 20 points of their own.

Georgia State led for more than 29 minutes of gameplay and limited the Bobcats to 27 percent shooting from the field and 0-of-10 from 3-point range. The Panthers had an eight-rebound advantage over the Bobcats, 41-33, with Johnson leading all players with nine rebounds.

After coming off one their most dominating wins of the season, the Panthers continued their Texas play with a matchup against third place UT Arlington (14-5, 6-2) losing 69-45.

With the second-best conference record in the Sun Belt, the Mavericks were looking to improve their record by beating sixth place Georgia State at home.

The Panthers began the game with a 15-6 deficit after the first quarter. The Mavericks took advantage of their position to build a lead as big as 24 points. Jada Lewis and Madison Ervin scored 10 and 16 points respectively, and they were the only Panthers to score in double digits.

Johnson, who came into the game off a career night in terms of scoring against Texas State, added nine points on only 3-of-8 shooting and five turnovers.

Bench play served one of the major differentiators in the game. The Mavericks’ bench was able to produce 25 points, while Georgia State’s managed only two for the entire contest.

n Saturday Georgia State men’s and women’s basketball will play their first games of the season against rival, Georgia Southern.

Georgia State and Georgia Southern’s men’s teams split the games by winning at home. Georgia State protected their home winning streak against the Eagles, winning 83-66 in the first match-up on Jan. 20. D’Marcus Simonds was the top performer, finishing the game with a doubledouble, 24 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers have not lost at home to their rival since 1992.

Last year’s game also sold out for the fourth straight year in a row at the GSU Sports Arena.

The second game on Feb. 16, the Panthers fell 80-85.

That game went right down to the wire as the Panthers mounted a great second half comeback. Despite holding Georgia Southern scoreless over the last five minutes, the Eagles held on to the lead and won to split the series.

This year, the Panthers will go into the game off to a hot start in conference play, winning their first five out of six.

The Panthers have also been protecting home court this year winning their first seven games.

They have a lot on the line heading into the rivalry game. The Panthers want to protect a piece of their program history by keeping the home winning streak against their rivals alive. Then, of course it is always good to get the first win in the rivalry series since these two schools won’t see each other again until March 9.

Women’s basketball will start their part of the rivalry series on the road new Sun Belt Conference schedule format.

Last year the Panthers swept the Eagles in one of their worst seasons in school history. In the first game last season, the Panthers won 71-56. In that first win, the Panthers out-rebounded the Eagles 56-24. They dominated the boards and did all the little things to pull off the huge win.

The second contest last season was a second half battle in Statesboro just like in the men’s game. The Eagles stormed back and took at late 54-53 lead with 4:49 left. The Panthers, however, went on a 14-4 run to end the game and swept the season series with a 66-58 win.

and nine rebounds.

This year, the Eagles will look to get some revenge on last year’s sweep. The Eagles are coming off their first conference win this season, a 65-55 road win at Texas State. The Panthers are .500 in conference play this season,

and they will be looking for a big win to move up in the Top 5 in conference standings.

Both the men’s and women’s teams need wins to keep their winning seasons rolling and grab victories in the rivalry series.

GWCC hosts “Super Bowl Experience”

T

he Super Bowl is a much bigger event than it was in 2000, when Atlanta hosted its last Super Bowl.

Atlanta is better fit to host it today because the Georgia World Congress Center is several buildings larger.

Super Bowl Experience is an 8000,000 square foot interactive exhibit at the Congress Center that is open now until Saturday. Alongside it will be Super Bowl Live, days worth of free concerts at Centennial Olympic Park.

The Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee is confident that these events will provide guests enjoyable and memorable experiences. It expects patrons to spends three to four hours at Super Bowl Experience.

“The expansion that has happened in the last almost 20 years has allowed us to do so much here,” said Mary Pat Augenthaler, NFL vice president of events, who worked the 2000 Super Bowl 19 years ago.

Fans can run the 40-yard dash, kick field goals, test their

passing precision and complete more drills at Super Bowl Experience. There are two NFL Shop locations — one is free and one exclusive to NFL Experience ticket buyers.

The NFL Shop features a Build-A-Bear station inside, paintings and limited-time gear and memorabilia.

Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman and former Falcons players Michael Vick and Roddy White were three of a long list of NFL players to do autographs on opening weekend. Antonio Gates and Desmond Trufant are scheduled to sign autographs this weekend “The Super Bowl Experience becomes everything that’s authentic about Super Bowl,” Augenthaler said. “Player appearances, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, skills and drills and movies and things that you can do that has everything that has to do with NFL football.”

Potentially the most Instagram-able station is where fans can take photos with the Vince Lombardi Trophy that the Super Bowl winner will hoist inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium after the game on Feb. 3. Fans can take photos with the hardware every day except Sunday.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days to attend for those on a budget and who don’t enjoy waiting in lines.

Each purchase of the $20 adult tickets on those two days at the box office only comes with up to three complimentary tickets for children under 12.

Entry free is $40 from Thursday through Saturday, the days where most out-of-towners will enter Atlanta. The experience is only available to Super Bowl ticket holders on Super Bowl Sunday.

Super Bowl Live will resume for three days on Thursday after it kicked off from Jan. 26 to Jan. 28.

Each day will have music specific to a different genre.

Country and rock acts will perform on Thursday, pop and EDM on Friday and hip-hop ends the week on Saturday.

Each performer was selected was by artist and Grammy-award winning producer from Atlanta, Jermaine Dupri.

Monica, Youngbloodz and DJ Smurf and the So So Def All-Stars perform on Saturday.

Anyone who attends Super Bowl Live will not miss the massive 35-foot Vince Lombardi Trophy. The trophy is on a fan platform also available for pictures.

Georgia State students are just one walk from campus or a few MARTA train stops away from a once-in-a-lifetime outing at no cost.
