RINGS & DIPLOMAS Annual Report 2012-2013
GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC FOUNDATION
Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation:
Proudly Continuing the Tradition of Giving In 1982, a small group of individuals formed the Southern Boosters to garner support for a fledgling football team at Georgia Southern University. Many years later, that group of faithful charter members has grown to thousands of supporters across the country, who proudly provide Georgia Southern athletes with scholarships from both an unrestricted and endowed basis. Now known as the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation, the organization also benefits the athletic program with the construction of athletic-related facilities, equipment purchases and other goods and services necessary for the operations of the athletic department. The Eagle Fund, the annual donation campaign of the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation, utilizes 92% of its received gifts directly for student aid. This monetary support keeps alive our vision of “Rings and Diplomas, granting every student-athlete at Georgia Southern the opportunity to pursue his or her goal of a college education and a championship ring.

Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation Mission Statement The Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization which raises money for Georgia Southern University student-athlete scholarships and priority needs of the Athletic Department as approved by its board of directors.
From the Board Chair, Ted Smith
I
’m on the bus! As a proud fan and donor to the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation, I am excited about the future of Eagle Athletics and the growth of its historic program. The move to the Sun Belt opened the door to FBS football while elevating all Eagle sports teams to a new level of competition. And with that move came needed facilities’ improvements and additional scholarship requirements. Three years ago, with an eye on the future, the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation initiated the Soaring to Victory Capital Campaign, which will significantly impact the entire athletics program, the university, the community and the region for the next 25 years. The multiple goals of the campaign are being met
2
with over 65% of our major initiatives being worked on, including projects that will help us meet the demands of our move to the Sun Belt conference. With the construction of the Football Operations Center underway, the focus now is to grow the base of donor support for scholarships and increased operational costs. The Transition 20 has helped us jumpstart that process by meeting the immediate FBS funding challenges with significant donations to the Eagle Fund. We are now seeking an “outside sales force” of dedicated Eagle volunteers to meet the additional funding needs. As one Eagle fan to another, we need your help. Get on the bus if you are a new donor, or become a bus driver and get your friends involved with this historic endeavor. Join me in support of our talented studentathletes!
From the President, John Mulherin
T
he Georgia Southern University football program wins football games. That is a historical fact. Our unparalleled success as champions of the FCS is unmatched by any other program — an extraordinary job well done. We have a lot to be proud of as Eagle fans and donors.
That commitment means the serious consideration of the funds necessary to continue our success story — the additional resources required to fund scholarships, increase recruiting budgets, provide stability in the coaching ranks and help ensure the academic success of our student-athletes. Such a goal requires the whole of Eagle Nation to get involved.
Yet we are on the cusp of making more history as we move to the Sun Belt conference. Such a move requires the energy and stamina to continue to be winners in all of our sports, and that is just what we are made of. We will continue to thrive and win.
If you are not yet engaged, it is time to for you to ‘Get on the Bus and Join the Journey.’ If you have already lent your support, we ask you to do a little more — become a ‘bus driver’ and help us recruit new members to the Eagle Fund, support all Eagle teams by purchasing season tickets, and increase your donation, to name a few ways of support. Roll up your sleeves and be a part of the future. We need you to do your job!
But winning games is not the only job ahead of us. We must continue to put forth the effort and sacrifice that has gotten us to where we find ourselves today, not only on the playing fields of all of our Eagle teams, but in the classroom, too. Our job is to fulfill the mission of “Rings and Diplomas” and honor each and every Eagle student-athlete who has worked to be a success at Georgia Southern. Our commitment is to give them the tools they need to accomplish their job.

Giving Categories Unrestricted Gifts
Contributions to the Eagle Fund are deposited into an unrestricted fund and used to help fulfill the scholarship needs of our student-athletes and the operational requirements of Georgia Southern’s athletic department. Donor benefits are based on unrestricted gifts to the annual campaign. Restricted Gifts
Restricted gifts given for a specific purpose may be permanently restricted for endowment gifts or temporarily restricted for specific projects. Named Scholarships (Endowments)
Endowing a scholarship is a way for donors to leave their legacy at Georgia Southern University. Unlike an annual gift, the corpus of the endowment gift remains in perpetuity. The interest income is used to benefit current and future student-athletes. Planned Gifts
Donors who include the Georgia Southern University Athletic Foundation in their estate plans become members of our Band of Eagles. Planned gifts may include bequests or beneficiary designations of insurance, for example. Other methods of planned giving may be discussed with your estate advisor. Gifts-In-Kind
In addition to annual cash gifts, various goods and services are needed to build the strength of our athletic department. Catering services, printing supplies, and courtesy cars are simply a few items among the department’s day-to-day needs. Capital Projects
Gifts to specific capital projects are made for new construction or renovations of existing facilities necessary to the operations of the Georgia Southern Athletic Department.
