“Like many of our faculty, I never thought I would end up teaching at a high school. But I’ve found this specialized residential teaching experience so unbelievably satisfying that I count myself fortunate to work at GSSM. The students are the motivation, as they are hard-working and high-achieving young people who are enthusiastic and passionate about their learning. It is wonderful to see the students grow, realize their passion and potential, and then go on to even greater success in college and their lives.”
DR. MARK GODWIN Physics Instructor

“At GSSM, I have the privilege of teaching college level material to incredibly bright high school students who truly want to learn. GSSM is a unique school where all students are eager to learn, even if the material in a particular class is not their passion. My favorite part of teaching at GSSM is starting with a student who does not like math (mostly due to their previous experiences) and ending the year with a student who truly likes math or, at the very least, understands its importance and no longer fears it.”
MRS. JENNY SALAZAR Mathematics Instructor

BETTER BE...GRYFFINDOR!
GSSM’s residence halls operate on a House System, meaning you’ll be sorted into Fidelitas, Fortem, Libertatem, Lux, Praesidium, or Veritas (depending on your assigned floor). The House System helps instill a sense of belonging and promotes school spirit through friendly competition.
There are regularly scheduled long weekends when you can go home, relax, and reconnect with friends and family. GET
INVOLVED!
While at GSSM you’re required to complete 50 hours of community engagement (but don’t worry, you can always do more!). You’ll help support the local community through shared responsibilities, including bus maintenance, assembly prep, and community service projects on and off campus.

Building compassion and character among our students is an important aspect of the GSSM experience. Giving back through service is one way we promote these tenets through community engagement. Students are required to complete 50 hours of community engagement in order to graduate, but most students exceed 50 hours. Our students serve the campus and the local community. Through community engagement, students are encouraged and reminded of the importance of using their abilities to support others.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
STUDENT AMBASSADORS
GSSM Student Ambassadors are a diverse group of involved students who provide a welcoming and informative first impression of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics to a diverse group of guests. Our ambassadors give prospective students and their families information about student life as a Govie through campus tours, speaking at events, and cultivating relationships to the personal guest experience. Our GSSM Ambassadors have involved students who are committed to sharing their passion for GSSM with guests.
HOUSE CAPTAINS
The residence hall at GSSM is set up on the House System. Each house is led by a House Captain. These residential leaders set an example for the others students in their House, which is their residence hall floor. They encourage and motivate fellow house members, work with Campus Life team members to implement programs, assist with the coordination of activities in the House, and encourage school spirit.
24
NATURAL HELPERS
Natural Helpers are an informal “helping network.” These peer leaders are the “front line” in assisting the Counseling and Campus Life staffs in meeting the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of our students. The mission of a Natural Helper is to instill a “sense of belonging” in the new students and a renewed sense among their fellow seniors. Their goal is to assist new students in adjusting to the academic and social transition from their home high school to life at GSSM and to provide assistance to any student in need.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council is the principle voice for the student body to the school’s administration, faculty, and staff on matters of school policy. In a spirit of cooperation, loyalty, and school spirit, the Student Council stresses good citizenship, works to encourage worthwhile activities within the school, and strives to improve the quality of life for everyone in the school community. Student Council strives to represent the ideas, wishes, and attitudes of the student body in a productive and reasonable manner. The school’s administration counts on the Student Council for student input on matters directly affecting the student body.

29
JOURNEY TOGETHER
The GSSM Journey brings together students from all over the state and globe. Together we enhance our community through wide-ranging social, cultural, and religious experiences. Through these experiences comes diversity of thought, which might be one of GSSM’s greatest strengths!
Our supportive environment is designed to create a learning experience out of every aspect of life. We strive for inclusive excellence in everything we do. It’s one of our core values.
Being in our 24/7 environment helps, of course, but so does the thirst for knowledge that our students all share.
We hear it all the time: Friendships that start at GSSM last a lifetime.
WHERE YOUR PATH CAN TAKE YOU NEXT!
COLLEGE COUNSELING
Juniors commence individualized college planning with their designated college counselor in the spring via College Planning Seminar I and continues College Planning Seminar II in the fall with all of our seniors. Our college counseling staff brings significant experience in higher education admissions to work with parents and students. GSSM’s enrollment size and mission affords us a smaller student to counselor (45:1 each class) and resources and support typically found in independent schools.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
Students have the same academic advisor throughout their GSSM experience. Academic advisors get to know their advisees well by reaching out to newly accepted students in the spring to introduce themselves and get the process of guiding them to make the most of their GSSM experience. Students, with the guidance of their advisors, choose courses and experiences that prepare them to excel in college, and that helps them figure out and pursue what academic areas they are passionate about.

“As I prepare to begin work on my PhD at Columbia University, having traveled a long way from home, I’m reminded that I did much the same thing six years ago, when I set out for Hartsville to begin a life-changing two years at GSSM. I had no idea what wondrous and fascinating roads GSSM would lead me down. So, my message to the Govies is this: Carpe Diem! Seize this day and find yourselves swept off to places of which you’ve scarcely dreamed.”
