GEORGE STREET PLAYHOUSE

“A constitution, as important as it is, will mean nothing unless the people are yearning for liberty and freedom.”—Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
We are living in uncertain times here in America. Some would even go as far as to say, dangerous times. We are in the middle of what could be one of the most consequential elections, where our very freedoms as Americans are on the line. Our freedom of speech, our freedom to vote, our freedom to love whom we love openly and without prejudice – and for women across this great country, the freedom to control their own bodies and to maintain all the hardwon battles to be treated as first-class citizens.
Directing Heidi Schreck’s timely and timeless work, What the Constitution Means to Me , now, as we are actively engaged in conversations about the very issues her play addresses, is a great responsibility that I welcome, both as a creative and a citizen. Working with the enormously talented cast we have assembled, led by multi-award-winning actress Kate Baldwin, has eased the worries and great weight I might have initially felt about tackling this important piece of theater.
Everything in this play is magnified because discussions about the very things the play highlights, right down to the state of our democracy, are currently happening in real-time. We are reminded of the urgency of protecting the values on which this country was founded, the freedoms we value, and the foundational principles of our democracy. We are not a perfect union, but we are a work in progress, and that is worth fighting for.
As the Artistic Associate at George Street Playhouse and Director of Heidi Schreck’s What the Constitution Means to Me , I am honored that we have launched our 50th anniversary season with this necessary play during this highly anticipated political climate. I hope you will leave this space feeling more optimistic about the future of our country armed with the pocket constitution as your fuel to vote.
