GEORGE STREET PLAYHOUSE

When my old friend, producer Julian Schlossberg came to me with an idea of working with film star Steve Guttenberg on a new stage script about his life, I couldn’t have been more intrigued!
After all, I had grown up watching Steve star in some of my favorite movies, The Boys from Brazil, Diner, Cocoon , not to mention his blockbuster hits Police Academy and Three Men and a Baby!
We have spent the last couple of years working to shape the countless stories of celebrities with whom he worked and the life lessons he learned along the way into a wild trip of a nice young Jewish boy from Long Island landing on the rollercoaster ride of his life!
Like Candide, Tom Jones or Alice in Wonderland , the resulting script shows the journey of our young, naive hero encountering a larger than life roster of producers, directors, agents and stars who inhabit the tinsel world of Hollywood.
Like Steve himself, our hero never loses his sense of innocence and the importance of family in his life.
I’m so thrilled to present you the result: a hysterical new age vaudeville that will entertain you and leave you moved.
Three brilliant protean performers play over 90 characters to create this tornado with Steve himself at the center.
Together with a superb design team, they have created a breathless romp that will certainly be a night to remember! Enjoy!
Hope to see you at our Gala on May 31st, my 25th Anniversary! Have a great summer!

George Street Playhouse is pleased to spotlight two members of our Board of Trustees, Jocelyn Schwartzman and Lora Tremaynee. Their leadership and the leadership of the entire board enable us to remain committed to our mission of enriching lives through world-class theater.
Jocelyn Schwartzman (Trustee) Since 1978, Jocelyn Schwartzman has been a dedicated member of the George Street Playhouse Board of Trustees. She served as vice president and helped establish the first Annual Gala Benefit serving as its Chairperson for over two decades. Mrs. Schwartzman was instrumental in the relocation of the Playhouse to the former YMCA, our home for over 30 years, and in the hiring of Artistic Director David Saint. With a background in fashion and design, including her work with the legendary Diana Vreeland at the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, Mrs. Schwartzman has guided the aesthetic of over 100 special events at GSP and, on the invitation of the city of New Brunswick, mounted an exhibit reflecting 300 years of dress for its tercentennial. She has devoted much of her time to the arts and philanthropy, most notably the UJA-Federation, Highland Park Temple, and American Repertory Ballet and its Dance Power program. Mrs. Schwartzman and her dear late husband, Herman, were married for 62 years and she is a very proud mother of four and grandmother of five...and recently became a great grandmother.
Lora Tremayne (Trustee) Lora Tremayne joined the George Street Playhouse Board of Trustees 40 years ago, serving as its president for three years when she led the establishment of the Thomas H. Kean Arts Advocacy Award. She has been a devoted member of the Gala Committee since its inception and served on the Leadership Search Committee whose work led to the hiring of Artistic Director David Saint. Mrs. Tremayne’s passion for the arts began in high school where she received a scholarship to study drama in college and it endures through her belief in the power of the arts to enrich our understanding of the world and each other. Mrs. Tremayne is committed to her community and her faith, raising funds for Cerebral Palsy Association and volunteering with her church ministries including the Altar Society and the Fish Hospitality Program. Married for over 62 years to her beloved late husband, Bill, Mrs. Tremayne takes great pride in their three children and 10 grandchildren.

Steve Guttenberg (Steve/ Playwright) In 1976, Steve Guttenberg was on a plane to Hollywood. His mother and father gave him 300.00 for a two week trip to try his hand at film acting. He was 17 years old . He had performed Children’s Theatre, an off broadway play and studied at various schools. He landed and immediately started trying to sneak into studios. He found his way into Paramount Studios, commandeered an office in the Lucille Ball Makeup Building, strung a phone from the water stage , and started making phone calls to casting directors, agents and producers. He landed a Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial and was off to the races. He earned a place in an agency and then Steve was cast in the acclaimed television movie Something for Joey, the cult classic The Chicken Chronicles, and the Universal film Rollercoaster and did numerous commercials. After a year in Hollywood, he decided the culture was not for him, went to Albany State University at the request of his Father, Stanley, and proceeded to have an experience as a college student. Hollywood called three months into his semester with an offer to costar with Gregory Peck in The Boys from Brazil. Steve flew to Portugal and didn’t look back. He was cast in some of the most popular films the industry released. Diner, Police Academy, Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby, Short Circuit and The Bedroom Window to name a few. His films have grossed over a billion dollars. Steve went on to act on Broadway in Prelude to a Kiss, John Turturro’s Relatively Speaking, The Boys Next Door in London’s West End, and in Woody Harrelson’s Furthest from the Sun in Minneapolis. Television- wise Steve starred in the one of the highest rated television events, The Day After, Billy Liar, Veronica Mars, Ballers, the sci fi hit Lavalantula, and most recently How to Murder Your Husband with Cybill Shepherd. Steve is known as a generous and thoughtful person,
creating The Guttenberg House in Los Angeles for emancipated foster children. He is married to his beautiful and accomplished wife Emily Smith , they live in Pacific Palisades , California.
