Girl Scout Mission

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Program

Grounded in the Girl Scout Promise and Law, Girl Scouting is an experiential, cooperative education program that promotes girls’ personal growth and leadership development. Partnering with caring adults, girls design fun and challenging activities that empower them and raise their voices within a local, national, and global sisterhood.

Girl Scout Promise

On my honor, I will try: to serve God* and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Highest Awards in Girl Scouting

The Girl Scout Bronze Award, Silver Award, and Gold Award prove that girls have what it takes to build a better today—and tomorrow.

Seniors and Ambassadors earn the Gold Award—the highest award in Girl Scouting—by developing and carrying out lasting solutions to issues in their neighborhoods and beyond. Gold Award Girl Scouts truly are the world changers, rock stars, role models, and real-life heroes we all look up to. They’re excellent candidates for colleges, scholarships, competitive internship programs, and exciting careers.

Cadettes earn the Silver Award by researching an issue, making a plan to address it, and then taking action to improve their communities. They gain confidence and skills that will catapult them to Gold Award success—all while creating positive change.

Juniors earn the Bronze Award by teaming up with other girls to make a difference in their communities. They gain essential leadership skills and learn that even seemingly small actions can make a big impact.

Elsie Brzezinski—Wausau, WI

In hopes of aiding endangered wildlife, Elsie educated people on making their backyards more wildlife-friendly by constructing a Wildlife Habitat at the Council Grounds State Park. This included a butterfly garden, a bat house, and birdhouses. Additionally, Elsie hosted educational sessions at the park, published a website, and started a Facebook page, all dedicated to educating and inspiring people to help wildlife.

Aanya Kasera—Appleton, WI

Parents: Patti and Shane Brzezinski

Project Advisor: Sarah Gilbert

Troop Leader: Angela Hansen

Lauren Linstedt—Neenah, WI

Lauren’s goal for her project was to inspire a positive environmental mindset in her local community. She constructed compost bins for her local community garden to raise awareness for environmental issues and to improve the soil quality. She also worked with local government to provide a space for composting. She set up multiple workshops where she introduced composting and its benefits. This project strengthened Lauren’s passion for sustainability, and allowed her to solve a problem in her community.

Parents: Anna and Latham Linstedt

Project Advisor: Cathy Reich

Troop Leader: Anna Linstedt

Aanya created a cultural education and appreciation initiative in her community to encourage children to develop their global literacy and spark their love for diversity. Aanya published a children’s book, Samosas with Saanvi, to share how she grew to love her cultural identity, capture the joys of cultural diversity, and portray the emotional journey behind acceptance. The mission of her project was to bridge the cultural literacy gap she noticed in her community, allow children to discover their own cultural identities and foster meaningful community connections.

Project Advisor: Emily Berndt

Troop Leader: Michelle Bartoszek

Elise Palecek—Oshkosh, WI

Elise created an exhibit for the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum that showcases influential women in aviation and aerospace. The exhibit is titled “Women in Aerospace.” It features Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, Eileen Collins, and Ann Druyan, all of whom have achieved great accomplishments in aviation and aerospace! Elise hopes that this exhibit will help girls feel validated and inspire them to learn about these amazing female role models!

Gold Award Girl Scouts are the dreamers and the doers who take “make the world a better place” to the next level. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the mark of the truly remarkable—proof that not only can they make a difference, but that they already have. Seniors and Ambassadors who earn the Gold Award tackle issues dear to them and drive lasting change in their communities and beyond.

Kendra Raddatz—Wausau, WI

Kendra compiled a closet of men’s and women’s formal clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and makeup. This closet is available to any student interested, regardless of need, to address the root cause of poverty and inflation. Many families lack extra money to purchase formal apparel worn only once or twice. Kendra obtained over 550 dresses, menswear items, shoes, and accessories through donations from students and community members. The Wausau East Prom/Winter Formal Committee will continue to maintain this resource for the community.

Parents: Melissa and Jeremy Raddatz

Project Advisor: Manee Vongphakdy

Troop Leader: Melissa Raddatz

Ella Trampe—Neenah, WI

Ella created and distributed grief resource binders for K–12 grades in the Neenah Joint School District. The grief resource binders are made for any lost loved one and are not aimed at a specific age group, so they can be used by anyone who needs them.

Ella created a strong partnership with her district mental health coordinator, and developed partnerships with all of the counselors and social workers in the Neenah district. Ella credits the counselors as the reason her grief binder got the opportunity to help grieving children start their grieving journey.

Cassidy Rose—Clintonville, WI

Cassidy created a free dog park for the community. A previous survey conducted among Clintonville residents showed that while the community wanted a dog park, they did not want to allocate taxpayer dollars to build it. Someone needed to step forward and start organizing, planning, and fundraising to get the ball rolling for this park to be established. Cassidy recruited Public Works Director, Justin McAuly, to be her project advisor. They began formulating a plan to create the dog park, entirely funded by private donations and fundraisers.

Girl Scout Lifesaving Award

Dating back to 1913, the handbook titled “How Girls Can Help Their Country” listed two medals that Girl Scouts could earn for meritorious deeds involving saving lives: the Bronze Cross, presented when a Girl Scout had shown special heroism or had faced extraordinary risk of her own life to save another’s life, and the Silver Cross, presented for gallantry with considerable risk to a girl’s life. Even after 110 years, the tradition of recognizing the heroic efforts of Girl Scouts through Lifesaving Awards continues, with the Bronze Cross and the Medal of Honor now serving as the modern-day equivalents.

Girl Scouts Honors Ashlee McGee with the Medal of Honor for a Remarkable Lifesaving Act

Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin—June 2023

Girl Scouts proudly recognizes Ashlee McGee— Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes Junior Girl Scout—for her exceptional display of quick thinking, decision-making, and heroism in a critical situation. Ashlee has been awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor, one of the highest accolades given to Girl Scouts who exhibit extraordinary bravery and resourcefulness in the face of adversity.

Ashlee’s courageous actions unfolded when she was at home with her sister and mother, who suddenly began experiencing symptoms of a stroke. In the midst of the emergency, Ashlee exhibited remarkable composure and took charge of the situation. Recognizing her mother’s irregular facial features and impaired speech, she immediately alerted her older sister, and together they contacted emergency services.

Despite the high-pressure circumstances, Ashlee assumed responsibility for the 911 call. With unwavering calmness, she relayed crucial information to the dispatcher, accurately described her mother’s condition, performed necessary tests as directed, and provided vital details to ensure prompt and efficient help arrived. Throughout the ordeal, Ashlee remained attentive to her mother’s wellbeing, embodying the true spirit of heroism.

These awards are exceptionally rare, with our council averaging one or fewer recipients yearly.

Girl Scouts is privileged to present Ashlee McGee with the National Medal of Honor award, symbolizing her selflessness, quick thinking, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Ashlee’s exemplary act inspires youth everywhere, illustrating the profound impact that one person, regardless of age, can have on their community.

1912 Club

“I am proud to be a part of the 1912 Club for a few reasons. First, my journey in Girl Scouts didn’t follow the traditional path. Most start young and are engaged in troop activities; however, that wasn’t an option for me. With no troops around, I decided to forge my own path and become a Juliette. As a Juliette, I can proudly say I completed both my Silver and Gold Awards, participated in the 2017 National Convention, represented my council as a delegate in the 2020 National Convention, earned numerous badges and awards, and became a mentor to younger Girl Scouts in my community. I am proud to highlight my unique accomplishments and encourage others to provide those opportunities for the next generation of Girl Scouts.”

—Isabella Lyste, GSNWGL Alum

“Joining the 1912 Club is a simple way to make a meaningful impact—a great way to support our Girl Scouts to be women of courage, confidence, and character; women who will change the world. I am in awe of what our organization strives to do for our Girl Scouts daily to enrich their lives and experiences. I invite you to join me in a monthly donation of $19.12 and be a part of the GSNWGL 1912 Club.”
