your summer!

Are you looking for a summer adventure for your girl? Does she want to spend a week with friends, both new and old? Is she ready for an outdoor adventure? Girl Scout camp awaits her! Your girl can celebrate summer and the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting at camp. She can learn something new; go on an adventure trip; or spend a week swimming, singing, and exploring nature. Your camper is sure to have a great time with Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines this summer. Each week at camp we will celebrate all of the great things about being a Girl Scout by sharing traditions, exploring the outdoors, and looking toward an exciting future of being a girl in today’s world. When your girl goes to camp—whether in the outdoors or on a road trip—she will build courage, confidence, and character. Camp is designed to give every girl a chance to succeed, build friendships, challenge herself, and have fun.

B Y PA R T I C I PAT I N G I N A G I R L S C O U T S U M M E R A D V E N T U R E . . .

She will grow in self-confidence and know that her voice counts. She will support others and be supported. She will increase her circle of friends, lead a group, follow others, compromise, and make decisions for herself. With other girls, she will create a community that values differences.

And, she will discover the power and fun of being a girl!

Girl Scout Leadership Experience Camp is full of fun activities—archery, swimming, climbing the Alpine Tower, eating in the dining hall, cooking out, and making friends. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is central to our summer resident camp program. Through activities and experiences, girls will gain skills to become leaders who are inspired to make the world a better place. Activities may include working on Girl Scout Journeys, grade level awards, and patches. All campers will receive a camp patch.

Group and Troop Camp! Troops and groups, complete with leaders, spend time exploring the wilds of Camp Graham or Camp Hardee while participating in swimming, archery, or canoeing. Campers enjoy other fun camp activities unique to the camp that the group decides to attend. Weeklong and minisessions are designed for a group of girls and adults to attend resident camp as a unit. Stay for a weeklong session, arriving Sunday afternoon and leaving Friday afternoon. For a mini-session, spend three days at camp having a great time.

important dates

At Group and Troop Camp, girls camp in groups and attend with their troop/group leader or other adults. The resident camp provides a “core” staff, including camp director, lifeguards, health supervisor, arts and crafts director, and dining hall staff. Each group has the opportunity to plan some of their own activities and can also participate in some waterfront activities, sports, crafts, and all-camp sessions led by the camp staff. Meals are prepared for you in the dining hall. Training is provided for Group Camp leaders before you’re off to camp. It really is the best of all worlds—a camping experience away from home, camping with your closest troop/group buddies, and meeting new girls from other areas at camp.

February 15, 2012 Online registration ONLY opens for currently registered members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines.

February 22, 2012 Processing of MAILED registrations begins for currently registered members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines. Please mail your registration form no earlier than February 15, 2012.

February 29, 2012 Processing of registrations begins for non-Girl Scouts or members of other Girl Scout councils.

FREQUENTLY ASKED questions Q: Who can attend Girl Scout resident camp? A:

Camp is open to all girls entering grades 2–12 regardless of race, religion, ability, national origin, or socioeconomic factors. All programs are open to Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts. Some programs may have prerequisites, which must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the camper.

Q: My camper is not a member of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines but would like to attend camp. Can she attend, and are there additional fees? A:

Girl Scout camps are open to all girls. Girls who are not members of Girl Scouts of the USA by February 1, 2012, pay an additional fee of $75 per camp session (which is due with the initial deposit). Girls who are members of councils other than Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines pay an additional fee of $60 per camp session (which is due with the initial deposit).

Q: Where will the campers sleep? A:

Girls are grouped in units. Depending on their program choice, girls may sleep in cabins or platform tents. Each unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters within the living unit, but close enough to supervise campers. Counselors sleep in the same cabin in select sessions at Camp Hardee. These sessions are noted in the description.

Q: Can my camper attend camp with a buddy/friend? A.

Yes, we would love for girls to attend camp with a buddy. Space is available on the registration form for the buddy’s name to be listed, but a camper may request only one buddy. Both girls need to be in the same age group, and both must register for the same session. Sorry, we cannot honor requests for more than one buddy.

Q: What are camp staff like? Are they trained? A:

Camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring. They are selected based on their maturity, program experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All counselors are at least 18 years old. Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive on-site training, which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and much more.

Q: Are camp staff local? A:

Most camp staff are from North Carolina. However, we work with Camp Counselors USA to recruit diverse staff from many different countries around the world. These staff members share their culture with the campers through camp activities.

Q: My potential camper has special needs. Can she come to camp? A:

8

Each year, many girls with special needs are able to participate in our camp program. Girls must be able to function in a 6:1 girl-to-adult ratio. Special needs may include physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative. It is our hope to be able to serve all girls wishing to attend resident camp. Providing a safe and positive experience to all campers is of utmost importance to us. The council reserves the right to make decisions of participation based

on the extent of the girl’s special needs and our ability to meet those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors as deemed appropriate. We are concerned about the health and safety of all campers, and we want to ensure we have appropriate professional and medical services to meet their needs. With regard to special diets, menus for programs are planned with the general camp population and economy of associated costs in mind. Special diet requests are not generally included in those parameters. We will make every attempt to provide for special dietary needs within the scope of our regular menus. Please contact the camp director at 800.284.4475 to discuss the camp program and nature of your girl’s needs before registering for camp.

Q: What happens if my camper has a difficult time adjusting to camp? A:

Q: What measures are taken to ensure my child’s safety while at camp? A:

Q: Can my camper call home during the week? A:

No. We encourage independence and self-reliance. Campers are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. The camp director will contact parents if the camper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency. Please let your child know before camp that she will not be able to call home and that you are comfortable with this. It is important that you do not send your child to camp with a cell phone, as there is little or no coverage—and, most importantly, it will send a conflicting message to other campers. We are partners with you in your child’s summer experience, and we hope that you will support us in making camp happy and fun for everyone.

No. To help maintain program continuity and ensure the safety of campers, visitors are allowed at camp during open house and arrival and departure hours only.

Q: What is a typical day at camp? A:

The day’s schedule will vary based on the camp and program but will be similar to the following: 7:00 a.m. Wake Up 8:00 a.m. Breakfast/Flag Ceremony/Kapers 9:30 a.m. Morning Activities 12:30 p.m. Lunch and Rest Time 2:30 p.m. Afternoon Activities/Unit Time 6:00 p.m. Dinner/Flag Ceremony 7:15 p.m. All Camp Activity 9:30 p.m. Lights Out

We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps for our campers. Each camp follows the guidelines set by the American Camp Association as well as those set by Girl Scouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints. Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins and tents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly. All camp staff and adults spending the night at camp must successfully complete a criminal background check.

Q: If our plans change, how do I cancel my child’s session? Can I get a refund? A:

Q: Can we visit during a camp session? A:

Camp staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, resident camp staff reserve the right to send any girl home who consistently exhibits inappropriate behavior or endangers herself or others. The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up, and fees will not be refunded.

If your plans change and your camper can no longer attend her camp session, please notify the council’s camp registrar as soon as possible. Once you register for a session, you have made a commitment to that session and are responsible for payment in full. No refunds are available unless you have a medical emergency with a written doctor’s statement, or the session has a waitlist and we can fill your camper’s space. In those cases, a refund minus the non-refundable deposit will be considered. Please see page 28 for our full refund and cancellation policy.

Q: When is the last day to register for camp? A:

Camp registrations will be accepted until two weeks prior to the session your camper wishes to attend. After April 30, registration must include payment in full. For late registrations, please note that your camper must have a doctor’s signature on her health history form in order to attend camp.

I had so much FUN I wanted to sTay longer! 9

CAMP GRAHAM

C A M P G R A H A M

* Camp Kaleidoscope Returns to Camp Graham! For the past 33 years, Camp Kaleidoscope has been a huge part of Camp Graham. Through Camp Kaleidoscope, chronically ill children are given a chance to take a break from hospitals and have fun in the outdoors. The boys and girls who attend Camp Kaleidoscope have non-communicable chronic diseases such as cancer, asthma, kidney disease, or heart disease. Doctors, nurses, and other professionals from the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center spend the week with the campers in the Kaleidoscope Program. They participate in all aspects of camp. For most of these kids, going to Camp Graham is their first camping experience—because they cannot go camping without doctors, nurses, therapists, and special equipment. Without the Kaleidoscope program, many of the children would never have a chance to experience the fun of summer camp! This year, girls and boys in the Camp Kaleidoscope program will be at Camp Graham during the weeks of July 8–13, July 15–20, and July 22–27.

horse

camps

Our summer horse program is for our campers to experience horses in a fun, safe environment. You will connect with your horse when you learn proper horse care. Our horse programs teach campers basic horseback riding skills, such as walking and controlling your mount, and basic care and grooming. Each summer horse program has its own flare and style. Depending on the camp you attend, you may ride English or Western style. See below for more details (for each location). You will be placed in riding groups based on an assessment made by the director of the horse program.

Camp Mary Atkinson

Camp Graham

Our horses are located on our property for the summer. You will walk to the barn every day and learn in small groups. Ride English style and enjoy connecting with your horse and partner. You are required to have long pants and boots appropriate for riding. We provide helmets, saddles, and other riding gear. When you are not at the horse barn, you will enjoy camp with your new horse pals while you swim, canoe, fish, and make crafts.

Our horse program is located at a local riding stable, which you will travel to daily. While there, you will participate in Western-style riding while you enjoy and connect with your horse. After you have worked on your skills in the ring, go for a trail ride to round out your week. You are required to have long pants and boots appropriate for riding. We provide helmets, saddles, and other riding gear. When you are not at the stable, you will enjoy camp with your fellow riders as you swim, hike, make crafts, and enjoy down time at the “Camp Graham Spa.”

REGISTRATION & PAYMENT Deposits

Camp Costs Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines understands the value of camp and continues to provide financial support to offer these important programs at affordable rates. Camp fees cover most direct costs—such as food, program supplies, supplementary health and accident insurance, and camp counselor salaries. Indirect costs— such as planning and administering the program, registration, and property maintenance—are costs subsidized by the council. In addition, financial assistance in the form of “Camperships” enables all girls to enjoy the Girl Scout camp experience. Camperships are made possible thanks to our many generous donors. If you would like to make summer resident camp possible for a girl, please mark your donation to the Campership Fund during the online registration process or on the registration form. Donations are tax deductible. (See page 28 for Campership information.)

Registering for Camp Girls who are currently registered members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines may register for camp: • Online beginning February 15, 2012 • By mail beginning February 22, 2012 Register online through C.O.R.E. at www.nccoastalpines.org.

Girls who are not members of Girl Scouts of the USA are also welcome to register for camp beginning February 29, 2012, for an additional fee of $75 per camp session.

Due to the number of girls on the waitlist, your camper’s slot may be filled immediately, so please be mindful of this important date. Payments may be made online or via check, credit card, or Cookie Dough. Financial assistance is also available for those in need. (See page 28 for Campership information.) Note: Fees for Camp Xtras are due at the time of registration.

Cookie Dough: Paying for Camp the Cookie Way Cookie Dough earned during the Cookie Sale Program may be applied toward resident camp sessions and special summer events, trading posts, day camps, and council-sponsored events. • A $75 non-refundable deposit is required for all registrations and will be used as part of the camp fee. Please register as soon as possible; don’t wait for the Cookie Dough to be issued. • In order to secure your camper’s top choice in camp session, registration through the online system is recommended. Please note that Cookie Dough is not accepted as a type of payment through the online system. Therefore, all registrants must pay the initial deposit via credit card at the time of registration. The council can apply Cookie Dough credits to the remaining balance. • If your camper has sufficient Cookie Dough to pay for the full camp registration fee, your deposit will be refunded at the time the Cookie Dough is applied. • If you wish to use your 2012 Cookie Dough for resident camp, please note this on your Superstar Destinations request due March 30. • To use 2011 Cookie Dough, please mail the card or a copy of the back along with a note that includes the amount to be applied; your camper’s name; and her session name, date, and location. • Cookie Dough is nontransferable and can only be used by the girl who earned it. 27

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT

REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY Camp Fees A significant amount of planning time and money are spent several months prior to the start of camp. It is also difficult to fill open slots as the summer approaches. Therefore, it is important to contact the council’s camp registrar as soon as possible if you know that your camper is unable to attend camp. • If your camper has a medical emergency that prevents her from attending camp, a refund request less the non-refundable deposit will be considered if submitted with a written doctor’s statement two weeks prior to the camp session. • If your camper becomes unable to attend camp for other reasons, the council may be able to refund your camper’s session fees less the deposit if your camper’s slot is filled from the waitlist. • If the council cancels the camp session, all fees (including the deposit) will be refunded. • If your camper is on a waitlist and cannot be placed in a session, the total fee (including the deposit) will be refunded.

Camp Xtras Fees Fees for Trading Post gift cards, camp care packages, T-shirts and photos are fully refundable with a two-week notice prior to the camp session. Please email your cancellation notice and request for refund to campreg@nccoastalpines.org.

Included in the emailed registration confirmation you will receive a link to your full Camp Confirmation Packet. This packet contains important information that your camper must know about her session, as well as required forms that must be brought with your camper when she checks-in for her session. Prior to applying for financial assistance, campers must be registered for a camp session and have paid a $75 non-refundable deposit. Camperships are awarded based on need, active participation in the Girl Scout program, and information provided on the Financial Assistance for Summer Opportunities Form. The Campership Committee makes every effort to use available money fairly to assist as many girls as possible. The deadline for applying is April 4, 2012.
