We take time today to recognize ten Girl Scout champions— cherished members of our Girl Scout family whom we have sadly lost these past two pandemic years. These ten champions have supported our Girl Scout Mission through the years, sharing their time, talents and treasures and represent the many Girl Scout family members and Girl Scout friends we have lost during this difficult time. We welcome our esteemed champion’s families and thank them for sharing their loved ones with Girl Scouts.

The Legacy Award The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Legacy Award recognizes those change makers in Nassau County who give back to the community and elevate and support the Girl Scout mission through their work, whether it be in their career or volunteer work. The Legacy Award is awarded to an individual (or business) in Nassau County who is a true leader working to pave the way for a positive future for girls and their families in Nassau County.

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Impact Award recognizes emerging leaders under 40 in Nassau County who are currently giving back and making contributions to the Girl Scout mission and larger Nassau County community. Awardees are the future legacies of Nassau County.

Nominations accepted from April 1–Sept 30, 2022.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County Legacy Awards Committee will review all nominations received.

Honorees will be announced at the Mobilizing Our Mission fall fundraiser in November 2022.

Honorees will be recognized at the 2023 Girl Scouts of Nassau County Legacy Luncheon in March 2023.

All nominations must be received by September 30, 2022 to be considered.

Keynote Speaker Carrie Gallagher

Director, Long Island Office - NYS Dept. of Public Service GSNC is pleased to announce our featured guest speaker for our Legacy Luncheon—Carrie Gallagher of the NYS Public Service Commission! Carrie will be joining us to participate in a conversation with our CEO Rande Bynum about resiliency, inspiration and hope.

Carrie is a Gold Award Girl Scout and Girl Scout Alum who has taken advantage of all that Girl Scouts has to offer—from trekking cross country to National Center West in Ten Sleep, Wyoming for a huge Girl Scout gathering; to running activities and programs for handicapped adults at Arbor House; to attending the 45th National Council Session in Miami as a National Delegate, where she met renowned author Maya Angelou.

As Director of the Long Island Office (LIO), Carrie provides increased regulatory oversight for LIPA and PSEG LI and ensures fair and reasonable electric rates for ratepayers, while safeguarding access to secure, resilient, reliable, and sustainable electric, gas, water, and telecommunications services in the region.

Most recently Carrie held the position of Acting Deputy Secretary to the Governor for Energy and Environment, serving as a member of the Executive Chamber. Previously, Carrie served as the Regional Director for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), overseeing a staff of 188 personnel with responsibility for implementing environmental conservation programs throughout Long Island. She also served as the Chief Sustainability Officer for the Suffolk County Water Authority, responsible for implementing a sustainability program. Prior to becoming Chief Sustainability Officer, Carrie was the Suffolk County Commissioner of the Department of Environment and Energy, safeguarding the county’s natural resources and providing a single centralized office for consideration of issues and activities from the perspective of their impact on the environment. She has also served as Deputy Director of Planning for Suffolk County.

Carrie holds a B.A. in Sustainable Development and Latin American Studies from Amherst College, an M.S. in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development from the University of Maryland at College Park, and an MBA from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University. She has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council LI Chapter “Leader of the Year (2021), Long Island Contractor’s Association Road Warriors “Natural Born Leader” (Spring 2021), City and State “Long Island Heroes” (November 2020), Town of Brookhaven Women’s Recognition in Government (2012), Networking “A Leading Long Island Environmentalist (August 2011), and Long Island Business “40 Under 40” (2003). Carrie is a member of Energeia (2006), a LEED AP BD+C, and a certified Wildland Firefighter Type II. She grew up in East Setauket and currently lives in Stony Brook with her family.

GSNC is thrilled to have this inspiring woman help us honor our nine GS champions who have helped deliver exceptional experiences to every girl on Long Island.

GSNC Champions Jim Adelis Jim spent much of his time giving back to his community never seeking thanks or praise. He was great at helping the right people connect at the right time. One such instance was connecting Dees Nursery and DHL resulting in Trees for Troops to send holiday trees to our troops overseas. This connection naturally brought about Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Operation: Cookie. With the enthusiastic leadership of Jim and moving power of DHL, each year our girls send thousands of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to our military men and women overseas and stationed at local military bases, bringing them a welcome “taste of home”. Always generous with his time and connections, Jim made GSNC’s 2009 Go for the Green Golf Outing a huge success and a fun time for all as the Outing’s Honoree.

Elizabeth Alford Liz was a long-time volunteer with Girl Scouts of Nassau County. Starting out as a leader for her daughter, she moved on to become a trainer. As noted in the Girl Scout Blue Book, “the ultimate responsibility for the Girl Scout Movement rests with its members”. Liz took that responsibility seriously—serving on her Bellmore Service Unit, as Delegate Chair, GSNC’s Board of Directors, Nominating Committee and serving as both Delegate and Alternate Delegate to the National Council Session/Conventions.

Very passionate about being a positive role model for Latina girls, Liz was a valued member of the GSNC Hispanic/Latino Task Force and enthusiastic volunteer at the Girl Scouts of the USA’s 5th National Latina Conference hosted by GSNC.

Nada Anid, Ph.D. Nada served as the first female dean of NY Tech’s College of Engineering and Computing Sciences since 2009. Long an advocate for women pursing education and career opportunities in STEM fields, her efforts included a book, opinion articles in various publications and a role in launching the Women’s Corporate Council a group of female leaders whose goal it is to empower and inspire others within the NYIT community and beyond. With such passion in supporting women, it is no wonder Nada was drawn to the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. In addition to serving on GSNC’s Board of Directors, Nada and NYIT worked with GSNC’s Program Department to provide a wide range of STEM opportunities to Girl Scouts of all ages in Nassau County.

Terry Bodnar Terry was passionate about Girl Scouts and especially her Franklin Square/West Hempstead Service Unit. She took new leaders under her wing and was generous in sharing everything she knew. Terry and her troop were well known for hosting inspired service unit events like a Broadway themed Thinking Day and International Night. Terry was fun and full of energy. She chaired both Entrepreneurial Programs for her SU for many years while managing a local Cupboard and coordinated a joint cookie drop site for multiple SU at a local park—and made it look easy. More than once, she dropped off a full lunch for the GSNC cupboard staff at the end of the cookie season. She organized a Blue Bay SU camping trip and introduced new volunteers to camping. She always encouraged and motivated others—with Terry leading the way, anything was possible.

Christine Bonczyk Chris was most recently a member of GSNC’s Board of Directors. Chris loved Girl Scouts and actively served on both the board, board and and council committees. She was a member of the Girls Go the Distance Walkathon committee from its inception and was always available to assist with any girl program that needed an extra hand. Chris made everyone she spoke with feel like they had known each other for years. If there was a job that needed doing, Chris was ready to help—always humble, never seeking accolades or recognition.

GSNC Champions Ramona Burkel Ramona helped found our GSNC Ceremonial Unit in 2001. Our Ceremonial Unit girls learn proper American Flag rules and protocol, the importance of flag etiquette, and the fundamentals of the Girl Scout flag ceremonies. Today our Ceremonial Unit travels throughout Nassau County and honors our country by conducting flag ceremonies for local community groups, sports events, and Girl Scout events. Ramona served as troop leader and service unit volunteer, however her passion was the outdoors and camp. She enjoyed sharing that enthusiasm with other leaders as a GSNC Outdoor Trainer and Oktoberfest Committee member.

Maureen Clancy Maureen Clancy exemplifies Girl Scouting. In 2002 Maureen was presented the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Juliette Low Award of Distinction for the many years of service to Girl Scouting. In fact, there is no local organization in her hometown of Garden City untouched by Maureen’s kindness and hard work. Most recently, Maureen opened her home and with the warmest hospitality hosted Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s 2018 planned giving tea.

Dienamarie Giaquinto Dienamarie, a Gold Award Girl Scout, was a Girl Scout for 12 years. As an adult Girl Scout, Dienamarie volunteered with Girl Scouts of Nassau County in a variety of ways for more than 17 years. She loved Girl Scouts and shared that passion as a troop leader with her mom as one of the leaders of a multi-level Girl Scout troop of Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors in the Merrick Service Unit and as a mentor to Girl Scouts in our council who were working toward earning their Girl Scout Gold Award. Dienamarie believed that Girl Scouts had given her a well-rounded experience and attributed much of her success to her leaders. Dienamarie wanted to volunteer with Girl Scouts as an adult to support girls in the same way she was supported as a girl.

Martha Naples Always the quintessential Girl Scout, Martha made the world a better place. For years Martha was a Girl Scout volunteer troop leader for her two young daughters. With her daughter’s grown, Martha joined the staff of Girl Scouts of Nassau County where she shared her love of Girl Scouts for 20+ years. Martha was the official greeter at our council’s reception desk and the first voice callers heard when they called council. She met all with a warm welcome and a helping hand. She was generous in sharing her Girl Scout knowledge and experience with new and experienced volunteers alike. In retirement, she became a member of the GSNC Honor Circle Society and continued her service to GSNC by volunteering with the Living History Committee.

Liz Reisert For Liz it was always all about the girls; she kept the girls’ best interest close to her heart.

She was smart and had a knack for bringing out the best in people. In addition to being her daughter’s troop leader, Liz utilized her fun creative spirit as the Plainedge Service Unit’s Events Chair. She organized service unit camping trips that were legendary. Girls interested in a pirate themed camping event—done —a murder mystery at a casino—done! Her innovative and creative ideas ensured the most opportunities, learning experiences and fun, while building self-esteem and enriching their Girl Scout experience.
