Dear Girl Scouts, leaders, parents and caregivers, This fall and winter, you can expect to be thrilled by all of the new programs Girl Scouts of Nassau County has to offer. There are MORE than 40 new programs in this book and every week you can expect to see new programs posted to our website and the OLC. Visit www.gsnc.org frequently to be in the know!

GSNC challenges girls to be MORE prepared, MORE adaptable, MORE flexible, MORE resilient, and MORE engaged by participating in more programs, in new ways with new people.

How to Use This Guide Use Possibilities as a tool to help plan your year, with your troop or Juliette by finding programs that match a girl’s age level and are of interest to her.

Read the complete event description and registration instructions carefully, as not all events are registered through gsnc.org.

If you can’t make the date of a program or prefer a virtual program contact our Program Partner directly to schedule your own program at a more convenient time.

What do these icons mean?

You will find these symbols throughout the program guide to determine the Girl Scout grade levels and who can participate in a program.

Daisy Grades K­-1 Brownie Grades 2-3 Junior Grades 4-5 Cadette Grades 6-8 Senior Grades 9-10 Ambassador Grades 11-12 Volunteer Girl Scouts of Nassau County has an active, intentional, and ongoing commitment to ensuring that all members are able to fully and meaningfully participate in and contribute to all aspects of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and Mission.

Registration Information Who can participate in an event or program?

All program opportunities in Possibilities are offered to registered Girl Scouts in Nassau County. Registered Girl Scouts can participate in level-appropriate programs and events with or without her troop, or as a Juliette, (formerly referred to as an independently registered Girl Scout with no troop affiliation). Non-registered girls need to include the $40 Girl Scout membership fee along with the program registration fee. Girl Scouts from other councils may attend GSNC events for an additional annual $20 fee per girl (space permitting). Placement is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Individual Girls and Juliettes It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to ensure proper adult supervision to all programs.

Troops Those attending as a troop must be accompanied by two approved Girl Scout adult members meeting ratio and Safety Activity Checkpoints requirements.

Tag-Alongs Tag-Alongs are non-registered participants, like siblings.

See individual listings to determine if Tag-Alongs are permitted and if there is a Tag-Along fee associated with the program. Registered Girl Scouts are given first preference. Due to the current health crisis, there may be restrictions to our Tag-Along policy. Please check the program information for details.

Outdoor Programs hosted by Program Partners In keeping with New York State COVID-19 standards and GSNC policy, please be prepared to abide by all social distancing regulations, including but not limited to wearing a mask for the duration of the program, staying at least six feet apart when possible and following any other requirements based upon current CDC, Federal, State, Girl Scout and local standards.

Virtual Programs Please review and complete GSNC’s Internet Safety Pledge with your Girl Scout. How to register for GSNC programs

Confirmation Email

You are not registered until you have completed the payment process. Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation email, contact customercare@gsnc.org.

Upon completion of payment, you will receive a confirmation email. If the program is a drop-off program, an Emergency Medical Consent form is required and will be collected at sign-in. A permission slip will be emailed to you with your confirmation.

By Mail Download the registration form at gsnc.org and mail with payment to:

Program listings in the front of the book are vetted by staff employed by GSNC. This includes assuring that sanctioned GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints are being followed and that the programming is aligned with Girl Scout badge requirements.

Advertisements in the back of the book have not necessarily been vetted by GSNC. Please inquire about safety precautions and other pertinent information when utilizing companies/organizations that have purchased advertisement space.

Payment Payment must be made at the time of registration.

Credit Cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover)

Cookie Credits (See below)

Cookie Credits Earned by individual girls who sell 300 or more boxes of cookies. Cookie Credits can be used for all GSNC council activities listed in this book.

To Redeem Cookie Credits Individuals may fill out the requested information on the Individual Girl Scout Program Registration Form.

Or you may attach the Cookie Credit Redemption Form downloadable at gsnc.org (search “Cookie Credit Redemption Form”) with your program registration.

If placement in a program does not occur and you paid in cash, credit card, or with a check, your payment will be returned.

Refunds Registration fees are nonrefundable unless Girl Scouts of Nassau County cancels the program, barring extenuating circumstances.

Refunds are not available for no-shows, late arrivals, or early departures.

Girls Need Girls GSNC is launching all kinds of new virtual and outdoor programs that girls in troops and independently registered girls with no troop affiliation (Juliettes) are invited to attend.

What happens when you have to go to an emergency room?

What is a stethoscope and an x-ray machine. How can they help find out what’s wrong with your teddy bear? Learn how doctors, nurses and other medical professionals can treat and help your teddy bear patient.

New! Exploring Soils at Hempstead Plains We all depend upon healthy soils for our food. In this hands-on program, we will explore the soils of the Hempstead plains Prairie by “digging in” with sifters and augers, conducting porosity experiments and visiting a soil observation pit. We will also discuss the connection between soils and plants of the plains.

during the Revolutionary War and learn their secret spy techniques. Learn historic spy craft, including codes, ciphers, and invisible ink, with five PDF activity sheets provided so learning and fun can continue long after the program. Claire Bellerjeau, Raynham Hall historian, will tell true stories of both British and American spies in the times of the Revolution, from Nathan Hale and the Culper Spy Ring to Major John André and Benedict Arnold.

New! Standing Where They Stood: Learning About Slavery in Oyster Bay Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay is famous as the home of Robert Townsend, Washington’s spy. But this “Virtual Tour” brings to light a new and much misunderstood history, focused not on the family, but on the 19 African-Americans who were enslaved by the Townsends, and the extent of slavery throughout New York and Long Island in the days before and after the Revolution. It is a history so critical to understand, and yet slavery in New York remains virtually unknown to the vast majority of New Yorkers. Learn the true stories of scores of individuals who lived in slavery on Long Island, including the first slave freed on Long Island in 1685, the first published black author in America, born in 1711, an enslaved woman who escaped with the British in 1779, and a regiment of African-Americans who fought alongside British Col. Simcoe’s Queen’s Rangers in 1780.

New! The Townsends in the Revolution Raynham Hall Museum is a historic house museum in Oyster Bay that interprets the life and times of the Townsend family during the Revolutionary War. Learn about how Samuel Townsend, who was a shipping merchant, helped plan the Revolution. Oyster Bay was occupied by several British regiments during the war, notably Col. John Graves Simcoe, commander of a regiment called the Queen’s Rangers. British spy, John André, also stayed here in 1779, a year before he was captured and executed for his part in the Benedict Arnold treason plot. Like other Long Islanders, the Townsends

If you select programs from Possibilities, you will find that the activity fulfilled is defined under “Learn and Earn.” The choices are endless and you are in charge! Girl Scouts of Nassau County collaborates with a multitude of public and private community businesses and organizations to bring Girl Scouts quality experiences in alignment with the Girl Scout Mission.

In reaction to the COVID-19 shelter in place orders in March, we reached out to our program partners for help. They answered our call for help immediately and seamlessly; making existing programs available virtually and creating new virtual programs, too! Girl Scouts have not stopped earning badges and patches, learning new skills, or acquiring new knowledge—all while connecting with their sister Girl Scouts. The world may have changed, but what remains the same is that Girl Scouts is an enduring sisterhood.

Not only did GSNC and our program partners smoothly transition to virtual programming, we launched the new Girl Scout at Home patch program complete with Try it!, Do it!, Create it!, Read it!, Prepare it!, Find it!, and Share it! activities, many of which were hosted by our partners.

GSNC remains grateful for the loyalty, dedication, and commitment of our program partners to the Girl Scout Mission in both the best and the worst of times. We look forward to all that is to come as we continue to explore and expand pathways for girls of all ages and stages—together!

These awards represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue that’s captured your interest in a big way.

Whether you want to plant a community garden at your school and inspire others to eat healthily for your Bronze Award, advocate for animal rights for your Silver Award, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for your Gold Award, you’ll inspire others (and yourself).

Plus, as you earn one of Girl Scouts' highest awards, you’ll change your corner of the world— and maybe even beyond.

This fall and winter all High Award Trainings will be online. You can access them at your convenience from home. Please check out our high awards pages on www.gsnc.org for basic information and the detailed toolkits to get you started. Then grab a cup of coffee or tea and complete the online training.

BRONZE AWARD TRAINING Learn the ins and outs of what is required to lead your troop through the Bronze Award process. Earning the Bronze Award, Junior Girl Scouts see how rewarding it is to make the world a better place, right at home, in their community! Once girls earn their Bronze Award, they tend to go on and earn all of the three highest awards. Help your troop on this path by completing the online Bronze Award training.

SILVER AWARD TRAINING Are you planning to earn the Silver Award? Take our online Silver Award training to learn the award guidelines and discover your inner leader. Complete this training to feel confident as you develop a true Take Action project, that will help your community for years to come! Take Action for the Highest Awards Want to be a Gold Award Girl Scout? Here are the steps to take to educate yourself, so you are ready to take on this challenge.

Start with looking over the Gold Award webpage at gsnc.org. This is a great resource for all things Gold at GSNC! Then read the Gold Standard (mandatory!) found in the resource section. Once you have the basic knowledge, it’s time to take the online training.

FIRST: GOLD AWARD TRAINING for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, leaders and/or adults Learn the award guidelines, what it means to do a Take Action project, important deadlines, the approval process, and what your interview will be like. Remember Gold Award Girl Scout not only change the world for the better, they change it for good!

THEN: STRIKE GOLD for Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors Once you have completed the Gold Award training and have come up with an idea/s for your Gold Award project you can sign up for a STRIKE GOLD session.

GS Gardener & Under Gardener Open House Come hear all the information you need to decide to become a GS Gardener or an Under Gardener.

Please join Girl Scouts of Nassau County in its twelfth year partnering with The Farm at Oyster Bay. This series program is open to all troops and individual Girl Scouts who want to learn how to tend a garden. All produce is donated to local food pantries.

This is a commitment for both the girls and leaders to see the growing season from seed to harvest. The program starts in March with the planning meeting and ends in September a tthe Harvest Celebration. By volunteering for six sessions throughout the growing th season, you will discover what it takes to be YEAR a gardener. of the Girl Scout Gardeners!
