uilt in 1955, Lincoln Elementary School was one of the oldest schools in the Las Vegas valley. As part of the $4.1 billion worth of funding raised for new schools and renovations, Clark County School District announced in 2016 that a new Lincoln Elementary School would be built adjacent to the old school—in an area then being used as a play area and park.

The park was a memorial park for Lieutenant Raynor L. Hebert of the United States Air Force and required the removal of a special dedication plaque.

My simple internet search about the man took an unexpected turn when I learned of the heroic sacrifice Lieutenant Hebert made on May 13th, 1964.

Only 26 years-old, he was a student pilot on a “routine in-flight refueling mission” when the tragedy happened.

Shortly after take-off from nearby Nellis Air Force Base, Hebert radioed to the flight control tower to inform them that he was having engine trouble. Heavy with fuel and unable to dump it, the F-105D aircraft he was piloting would have glided “like a brick,” according to Gen. Boyd Hubbard, then-commander at Nellis.

the minimum altitude for a successful bail out. His only options were to eject or remain on-board and try to guide the aircraft. He communicated his intent to steer the plane away from a populated area and into the desert, about 1,000 feet away.

Lincoln Elementary School was directly in the path of the falling jet. At 2:10 in the afternoon, there were hundreds of students inside the school. Hebert cleared the school by inches—so close that the building was scorched with jet exhaust. Five persons, including Lieutenant Hebert, were killed when the jet crashed into nearby homes.

saved his own life. By staying with the plane, eyewitness reports at the time and an official probe concluded that his actions saved countless innocent lives.

A woman who heard the plane’s engine falter and saw it losing altitude said: “Bless his heart, the pilot really tried.”

The heroic self-sacrifice by First Lt. Raynor Hebert is still memorialized with the original dedication plaque, which has been relocated to the new memorial park at the site of the original Lincoln Elementary School. Like I was a few months ago, I imagine most of you reading this article were unaware of Raynor L. Hebert. It’s my privilege to use this space to share his story. I feel honored to now know his name.

Paying attention during Safety Training could save your life!

If someone were to ask you why safety is important, how would you respond? You may be aware that it’s important to keep safety in mind as we perform our daily tasks, but how would you explain the reasons why this is the case? Here are a couple of reasons to consider: THE IMPACT SAFETY HAS ON FAMILIES It’s a phone call that nobody wants to receive. “Hi, your spouse has just been taken to the hospital, they had an accident at work.” A phone call like this can have a big impact on families. Let’s also add children to the mix. Not only do we need to think about money here, but also about their needs like going to after-school activities or the daily trips to and from school.

Most American families today simply can’t afford to miss a paycheck. When your family is dependent on you for financial stability, you must work to pay for housing, food and the clothes on their backs.

THE IMPACT ON EMPLOYERS The Occupational Safety & Health Administrations stated “Businesses spend $170 billion a year on costs associated with occupational injuries and illnesses -- expenditures that come straight out of company profits. But workplaces that establish safety and health management systems can reduce their injury and illness costs by 20 to 40 percent. In today’s business environment, these costs can be the difference between operating in the black and running in the red.”

PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY SHOULDN’T COMPETE How many times have you heard “Safety first” or “Safety is our first priority”? When safety is a “priority”, then everything else comes afterwards, and this includes productivity. Because we need to provide for our families, safety and productivity must both be successful and cannot compete. When safety is a value, it doesn’t matter what our priorities are for the day, we will always find the safest way to perform our work tasks and both can be successful.

SL ELECTRIC WORKED WITH L AYTON Construction on this beautiful showcase building in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. Built with the community in mind, the Eccles Theater features a 5-story lobby that is open to

the public during daytime hours, inviting guests to travel through on their way to adjacent buildings. The concert hall seats 2,500 guests throughout the main floor, 3 balconies, and private booths.

The architecture and design of the entire building reflects a stylistic modern image that is sure to leave visitors impressed. It is the premier performance venue in Salt Lake City. Its large capacity, incredible acoustics, and centralized location make it an ideal host for Broadway shows, concerts, stage plays, and a variety of other performances.

Whether it is setting the stage for an opera, displaying public art in the lobby, or hosting local performances and events, Eccles Theater now contributes to the culture of Salt Lake City.

GSL Electricians installed more than 6,000 light fixtures and nearly 1 Million feet of cable with 172 branch panels.

Lighting requirements for this facility were considerable. The objectives for lighting control were: energy efficiency, easy control, and dimming capability. The building contained 6,000 individual light fixtures, with a large majority installed in the concert hall itself. GSL Installed over 600,000 feet of conduit to house nearly 1 Million feet of cable.

The design of the theater required a great deal of lighting to be mounted high in the ceilings. GSL also installed specialty lighting such as the suspended decorative light globes in the lobby, end of row lighting on the aisle seats, and a “starfield� in the concert hall that consisted of 16,000 feet of low voltage LED string lighting with 3300 individual randomly placed LED nodes.

A massive endeavor, GSL electricians worked over 168,000 hours to complete this project on schedule. The project itself required a great deal of work to be performed at height, and GSL had to coordinate with other trades to ensure everyone was able to safely and efficiently complete their scope of work.

The end results speak for themselves.

The venue is beautifully furnished, well lit, and shows a remarkable dedication to craftsmanship for all trades involved.

GSL is proud of the end-product we were able to provide to the owner. We hope that visitors in Salt Lake City will enjoy not only the performances hosted there, but also the beauty of the building itself.

GAME TECHNOLOGY WANTED to expand to a new facility for their North American operations. The Australianbased slot machine manufacturer needed a building that could serve as their North American Headquarters and was capable of meeting both their manufacturing and distribution needs. GSL Electric was part of the team that Martin-Harris Construction put together to make this project a reality.

As a design-build contractor, GSL provided both the electrical engineering and the installation on this project.

HEADQUARTERS Engineering began in the second half of 2014, with GSL’s in-house team of electrical engineers and designers, rising to the challenge to provide a modern top-tier office environment, and a manufacturing warehouse that could accommodate 8 lanes of production, with a 9-bay distribution center attached. GSL’s spec also included

the low-voltage design and installation on the premises as well.

Ultimately, the complex was designed with over 80,000 square feet of administrative office space, where Ainsworth’s executives, programmers, and artists could develop new gaming products. A massive 140,000-square-

foot manufacturing warehouse allows for the on-site manufacturing and distribution of these products.

This 291,000-square-foot complex is a state-of-the-art facility. The new warehouse alone is over three times larger than AGT’s previous facility in Las Vegas. It is equipped to serve the demand for AGT games from casinos in Canada, the United States, and Latin America. As a boost to the Southern Nevada region, the new facility provides products for many local casinos, as well as nearly 200 jobs for the various employees working at the new location.

E

CENTRAL UTAH Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison, Utah was no small task. The aim of this project was to add a new housing unit, intake building, and Kennel to the existing correctional facility. The housing unit added 192 new beds and increased capacity of the CUCF by more than 10%.

XPANDING THE

GSL electricians dedicated over 31,000 man hours to the construction of this 54,000 square foot project. In that time, they installed over 250,000 feet of conduit and 750,000 feet of

wire and cabling. Nearly 900 new fixtures provide light for the inhabitants and staff in the new expansion.

Individuals incarcerated at CUCF benefit from treatment programs for substance abuse, courses for the development of life skills, and work programs.

An additional 76 staff members were hired at the CUCF to provide supervision and other services for the inmates within the newly constructed buildings.

CUCF utilizes a direct supervision management model where officers interact directly with inmates. This has been shown to improve safety and reduce violent incidents

HIS LEAN PROJECT WITH SR CONSTRUCTION involved the build-out of the 3rd and 4th floors of the Centennial Hills Hospital, which GSL had worked on in its initial construction in 2007.

Lean construction projects facilitate working together in order to solve issues. The entire team succeeds or fails together. Teamwork is always important, but Lean projects go beyond in their participation from all trades in the management and scheduling of the project. When an issue presents itself, all trades coordinate together to find the most cost effective solution. Whether you are an Owner, General Contractor, or Subcontractor, all parties involved in the project have equal say in the matter.

Facilitates coordination and eliminates waste by allowing each contractor to focus their efforts where they will be most effective within the schedule.

Each floor buildout was treated as a separate project, and GSL Electric served as the DesignBuild Electrical Contractor.

Because of our

involvement in the initial planning stages of the project, GSL’s in-house engineers were able to identify potential issues and quickly implement changes. This upfront coordination helped to save time and control construction costs, as our designers were able to design to the budget that had already been established.

An advantage to Lean construction is that it allows contractors to properly leverage the entire work force.

Manpower usage on this project was incredibly smooth, without the peaks and valleys often seen on typical projects.

The project was able to meet its schedule and maintain budget thanks to the mutual effort of all parties involved.

We look forward to our next opportunity to work on a Lean project.

DR. BEVERLY S. MATHIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL T

the Southwest Las Vegas region are attending class at the brand new Beverly S. Mathis Elementary School.

GSL was selected as part of CORE Construction’s project team to bring this new school to life. The school is one of many new schools that provide relief for the overcrowding that has been an issue for the Clark County School District in recent years. Students zoned for Mathis Elementary come from 5 different elementary schools in the region.

LIFTED LITERATURE Students have convenient access to the school’s library and an outdoor patio, both of which are located on the second floor with a view of the courtyard area.

The campus is 130,000 square feet with space reserved to accommodate growth and a full-day kindergarten. The school consists of two main buildings, which encapsulate a courtyard. The front building houses the main entrance, administrative offices, multipurpose room, lunch room, and kindergarten classrooms. The other building houses classrooms for 1st through 5th grade.

GSL’s scope consisted of more than $2.5 million worth of material and labor. Our electricians installed over 170,000 feet of conduit and race way and pulled over 380,000 feet of wire and cabling to provide power and data to the campus.

The project was completed with enough time to allow for it to be open for the 2017-2018 school year.

CHAMBERS WILL FLETCHER SPECIAL PROJECTS | LAS VEGAS PROJECT MANAGER

I

N THE FALL OF 2016, GSL ELECTRIC was approached by PENTA Building Group to bid on the Zappos Chambers Remodel, located in Downtown Las Vegas. Zappos is a repeat customer of PENTA. With that in mind, constant communication during the estimating process helped to uncover potential cost impacts and oversights.

Ensuring there were no gaps in scope of work coverage is one reason GSL was fortunate to recieve an award for the project.

REMODEL

Zappos is committed to providing a stress-free and enjoyable environment for their 1,500 employees. They offer a wide selection of food and activities for them throughout the day and saw a need for the Chambers Remodel.

Now that construction is complete, the Chambers area of the old City Hall building is now a theater-type room that offers movies, special events, guest speakers, and other entertainment activities. This project build-out consisted of a new stage, sound system, green room, A/V room and storage room, voice data, fire alarm, security doors, as well as a projector and recessed projector screen.

Towards to the end of the project, PENTA Building Group and Zappos executives gathered up all subcontractors on site and prepared a safety appreciation lunch for project team members. During the luncheon, Penta gave recognition to individuals that showed exceptional safety practices.

We are proud that one of our apprentices, Luis Valdovinos, was one of only three people selected by Penta for recognition. This demonstrates that the efforts being put into GSL Electric’s Zero Broken Lives safety culture is being executed in the field.

SL ELECTRIC WAS SELECTED AS PART of Layton Construction’s design build team for a new retail and residential development at Kimball Junction in Park City. Canyon Corners was designed and built to enhance Park City’s community with a mixed-use center with well known retailers, such as Whole Foods, as well as affordable housing.

The 80,000 square foot facility consists of multiple buildings on a 13 acre property. One retail building includes tenants like Mod Pizza, Christy Sports, Slapfish, T-Mobile, and Intellibed.

Canyon Corners’ main attraction is the 43,000 square foot Whole Foods grocery store. The store is a new prototypical layout, with an open feel layout and numerous windows allowing natural light and breathtaking views of the majestic Wasatch Mountains.

This retail building also features 20 units of luxury workforce apartments.

These 900 square foot apartments come equipped with modern features like upgraded flooring, quartz counter tops, and open layouts. These units are deedrestricted as affordable, and intended for employees at the various retail stores within the complex.

ecently, GSL was part of HansenRice’s design-build team to remodel and expand 4 separate distribution centers owned by Albertsons.

These facilities were located in Gresham Oregon, Lubbock Texas, Irvine and Brea California. The remodels consisted of the expansion of office space, dry storage warehouses, cold storage, and banana rooms.

Yes, in order to ensure that bananas reach your home at the right stage, they are given their own ripening rooms within a distribution facility.

Each project presented its own unique challenges. For example, the two facilities in California had to meet title 24 energy efficiency requirements for lighting and lighting control. To meet this challenge, we worked with Acuity and nLight controls, utilizing nLight enabled light fixtures. An additional challenge was designing four very similar projects with unique requirements dictated by the different state building codes. The construction phases of these projects were managed out of both GSL branch offices, with the Oregon and Texas facilities managed from Salt Lake City, and the California facilities managed from Las Vegas.

BEFORE THE STORE The food we buy at the grocery store makes many stops before it finds its way into our homes. One important stop in the cycle is a food distribution warehouse. These allow suppliers to drop off large quantities of products for the grocer to distribute according to the needs of each store.

LEGACY VILLAGE Suga r Hou se NEW SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY is flourishing near downtown Salt Lake City. Located within one of the city’s long-established desirable neighborhoods, residents of the Legacy Village of Sugar House are located within minutes of fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and healthcare. In addition to the electrical scope, GSL provided all of the fire alarm engineering and installation services for this robust retirement community.

A great undertaking, the 272,000 square foot campus included: 286 premium apartment units, a fine dining restaurant, administrative offices, an in-house theater, exercise/ activity spaces, parking, and 14,000 square feet of retail space. In addition to those amenities, Legacy Village is equipped to provide assisted living and memory care for JASON LOCHER residents who may have specialized PROJECT SUPERINTENDENT needs.

Legacy Village has over 10 stories of primarily concrete structure. The bottom 4 levels are comprised of parking decks (with over 500 individual parking stalls) and ground level retail space. The 6 floors above housed the nearly 300 resident apartments. GSL electricians committed over 60,000 labor hours to install over 700,000 feet of cabling in the facility. This included the low voltage systems, such as fire alarm and nurse call services. We are proud of the workmanship and the efforts our team made in order to help this project reach its completion within 22 months.

OCATED IN THE HEART OF A SMALL

two-block area unofficially known as the “Corridor of Hope” in Las Vegas, CARE Complex was in very poor condition. Having been abandoned for years, it was essentially a 5,000 sf crack house when CARE’s Director, Mike Swecker, purchased it in late 2014.

Although they had been making good use of the space since that time, the structure needed serious renovation. It probably should have been condemned.

CARE focuses on support services for homeless individuals. Think birth certificates, bus passes, clothes for job interviews, addiction treatment, locker services, etc. Before meeting at CARE Complex for the first time, I looked up the address, 200 Foremaster Ln, on Google’s street view. Two things stuck out to me when I rotated the 360° view: 1) the sheer number of homeless

filling the street… and 2) the random, freestanding water dispenser (like the kind you have in your company break room) placed just inside the fence. The story behind that water dispenser was life changing.

Many of the members of the Construction Leadership Council (formerly the Young Constructors Forum) are longtime Vegas residents. Very few of us had any idea that the Corridor of Hope even existed. We were shocked to learn that six people had died from exposure in Corridor during the Summer of 2015. After the sixth death occurred literally at their doorstep, something had to be done. CARE Complex is privately funded, and they operate on a shoestring budget. Unable to afford a permanent solution, they brought their water dispenser from inside the building and plugged it in out front where

everyone could access it from the street.

Then they manually refilled the dispenser multiple times per day… every day… for months.

No one died in that area from exposure during the summer of 2016.

I believe it was that spirit of doing what they could with what they had, that really resonated with our group. We also felt like the needs of this organization meshed well with the skills and resources that our committee could provide. Nate Jacobs (McCarthy) and Lindsay Howard (Commercial Roofers) led the renovation effort. More than a hundred volunteers and several dozen companies made it all possible. GSL Electric was proud to donate all the material and labor necessary to get their electrical up to code.

Our budget was literally $5,000 when we started the project. Over the following month, it grew to nearly $400,000 worth of renovation and upgrades—all of it donated. Once we explained the situation to our friends in the construction industry, as Nate Jacobs would later explain, “the response was almost too much to handle.”

We received so much support, we were able to take on another (albeit smaller) project at the same time for another worthy organization nearby called Gentlemen by Choice. You can learn more about these two amazing projects and organizations by watching this 5-minute video.

And don’t worry… we installed a permanent, commercial grade, water fountain in front of CARE.

CONSTRUCTION VS CANCER

IDAHO FALLS TEMPLE REDEDICATION Several GSL employees and their families made the trek to Idaho Falls, ID to participate in a special open house for contractors who worked on the 2-year renovation. The temple was originally built on the picturesque banks of the Snake River in 1945.

Hundreds of volunteers from dozens of local construction companies turned out in support of children and their families who have suffered from Pediatric Cancer. The construction industry raised several hundred thousand in conjunction with the event.

LET’S RIDE The GSL Grill made an appearance in Gunnison, UT for the annual Saints to Sinners bike relay race. Clair, Aaron, and Chad cooked hundreds of burgers that day. Do you have a bike and want to ride with us next time?
