2024 Edition
Welcome to Like a Girl Scout—the annual magazine for members of Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI). Whether you’re a brand new Girl Scout this year, or one of our long-time members, we hope you enjoy what you find inside.
This issue of Like a Girl Scout is a bit different than previous years. Not only is it digital (for the first time!) but we’ve added more information about leadership awards, our custom patch programs, and more! We’ve also streamlined the summer camp selection and registration process on our new events website (thehub.girlscouts.org) where you can find full camp session schedules and descriptions! This edition of Like a Girl Scout focuses on the true magic of camp! Camp means connection, wonder, friendship, adventure, and so much more!
From a record-setting Mud Run in September to our largest Cookie Kickoff ever, momentum is high! For me and my troop, we’re planning our camping schedule this summer. We also love utilizing GSGI’s camp properties for a DIY style of camp and can’t wait to sing around the campfire. Creating memories together in nature, completely disconnected from the busyness of life, has been one of the greatest blessings I’ve received in Girl Scouting!
I watched my oldest daughter graduate this past year, along with seven of her classmates, each proudly wearing their Girl Scout cords. I saw their shared smiles, their pride, and the way they showcased our mission with their confidence, each venturing off to their respective next chapters in life, but united by this incredible thread.
It hit me in “all the feels” knowing we’re playing a role in giving them the ultimate gift, creating a people-centered life.

GIRL SCOUTS FOR ALL GIRLS
While participating in a traditional Girl Scout troop experience is the heart of Girl Scouting, some girls and their families have barriers and challenges that prevent them from having access to a Girl Scout troop. That’s where Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa’s Mission Outreach programs come in! The goal of Mission Outreach is to meet girls where they are, in an effort to reduce barriers and expand access to Girl Scout programming, providing opportunities for leadership, adventure, and success. We work with youth-serving community partners in our council to bring high-quality, short-term Girl Scout experiences to girls.
2
GIRL SCOUT CLUB
This short-term afterschool program is for girls in grades K-5 and takes place 1 hour each week, for 5 weeks. Club sessions are designed based off the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, providing girls an onsite and hands-on learning environment to explore the areas of STEAM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship to build courage, confidence, and character. All activities are girl-led and guided by a trained Girl Scout Club facilitator. Girls have the opportunity to learn by doing and engage in cooperative learning experiences that have them making friends, having fun, and finding adventure!
MAKE NEW FRIENDS
This 4-session program focuses on kindergarten readiness skills to help girls start school with confidence! In partnership with early childhood providers, this hands-on experience is designed to boost Pre-K girls’ social skills and courage as they make new friends while learning new skills and what it means to be a Girl Scout.
GIRL SCOUT EXPEDITIONS
GSGI partners with community organizations to provide custom K-12 programs tailored to the youth and families they serve. Program participants may be experiencing unique challenges such as language barriers, displacement, lack of transportation, or other extenuating circumstances.
We’re always looking for Mission Outreach volunteers to help girls in these programs build courage, confidence, and character. Please reach out to info@gsiowa.org if you are interested in learning more!

GIRL SCOUTS IN LEADERSHIP
There is no better place than Girl Scouts for a girl to develop her leadership skills and achieve awards! Girl Scouts connects girls with award opportunities at all levels, starting with our youngest leaders – Girl Scout Daisies in kindergarten, all the way through high school seniors – Girl Scout Ambassadors. Daisies and Brownies learn the basics of what it means to be a good neighbor and how they can be helpful to others. This gives them the foundation they will need to earn the Bronze Award as Girl Scout Juniors by teaming up with other girls to make a difference in their towns.
Cadettes earn the Silver Award by researching an issue, making a plan to address it, and then taking action to improve their communities.
Seniors and Ambassadors earn the Gold Award—the highest award in Girl Scouting—by developing and carrying out lasting solutions to issues in their neighborhoods and beyond. Gold Award Girl Scouts truly are the world changers, rock stars, role models, and real-life heroes we all look up to. Plus, they’re amazing candidates for colleges, scholarships, competitive internship programs, and exciting careers.
Trailblazer Girl Scout Troop 153 taught other Girl Scouts and Leaders about various outdoor cooking methods, the best type of fire for each cooking method, and the best type of cooking method preferable for specific methods of camping, during their service unit camp out. They created several informational booklets and donated them to their service unit so other troops can utilize them to help plan their own outdoor adventures.

Only 6% of eligible Girl Scouts earn their Gold Award. Want to learn more? Contact us and we’ll help your Girl Scout get started!
Troop 1315 learned to knit hats and scarves and donated 35 to the Clive Library Harbach Center clothing closet to support new immigrants and refugees in our community. They also typed up instructions to knit hats and scarves on looms and donated the looms as kits to be checked out the the Clive Library’s Makerspace. Two kits will be at the main Clive location and two will go to the new Harbach branch where they are in the process of starting another Makerspace.

Meet Silver Award Girl Scouts: Troop 232
Troop 232 built and painted 16 bat houses. The troop learned why bats are a crucial part of our ecosystem, and how they can use the houses for habitats. To build their bat houses, they researched designs and learned how to use power tools—working with materials that were donated or recycled from other projects. They also created an information sheet to include with the houses.

Kylie supported the Redfield Community by building a sustainable park with natural play area that will encourage children and community members (from Redfield and beyond) to get out doors and experience what Redfield has to offer. Working with generously donated land, she included stumps, climbing wall, obstacle course, tee-pee, busy board, hopscotch, and small manipulatives (rocks, pinecones, tree cookies, etc.) for children to build with.
The playspace is ready to be enjoyed by the community.
Kylie believes this new addition to her community will encourage people to get outdoors and socialize. She loks forward to seeing more children playing outdoors and spending less time on electronics.
Kylie received the GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship totaling $10,000 for her work on this project. Congratulations Kylie. We’re so proud of you!
We’re so proud of Kylie and her accomplishments!
There are many other awards Girl Scout of all levels can earn. We’ve listed some on the next page but there are many more available! Find more information about awards in each Girl Scout grade level handbook and guide!

IT’S SUMMER CAMP SEASON!
Girl Scout camp is the perfect haven for your camper to develop a love of nature and an interest in the natural world. They’ll learn to engage safely and responsibly in a range of outdoor activities, gain confidence in their abilities, take on new challenges, and learn from them.
Camp is for every Girl Scout. At GSGI, we are committed to creating an environment where all girls have the opportunity to participate in a movement that encourages them to overcome barriers and become leaders in their community and world. All our staff, campers, volunteers, members, and parent/guardians are expected to think, speak, and act in ways that ensure all people feel they belong and can meaningfully participate in all aspects of Girl Scouting, including camp. We’re so excited to welcome your family to camp this summer and can’t wait to share the adventure with you!
Our goal is for Girl Scouts to develop the courage to try new things, the confidence to be themselves, and the character to make the world a better place. When your Girl Scout comes home from camp, they may show this by demonstrating more independence, showing higher self-esteem, and displaying new skills learned at camp.
We’re looking forward to partnering with you this summer. We recognize that trusting us with your Girl Scout is a huge responsibility and we can’t wait to get to know them and help them grow. See you soon!

SUMMER CAMP DETAILS
BECOME A MEMBER
Every camper needs to be a member of Girl Scouts. If your camper is only participating in camp and not any other Girl Scout activity, that is completely fine! They still need to be registered members to attend camp. An annual membership costs $25. Financial assistance is available.
AGREEING TO THE CODE OF CONDUCT
You are preparing your camper to be in an environment where it is expected that they will follow camp rules, be respectful to themselves, others, and property/equipment, and will use appropriate language and behaviors. You can find the full Code of Conduct online at girlscoutsiowa.org/camp.
In the scenario where your camper cannot adapt to these expectations and violates the code of conduct, you may be contacted to pick up your camper early.
COMPLETING PAPERWORK
You are committing to filling out the required paperwork and forms for the camp experience. Health forms, waivers and forms for us to learn about your camper are important for us to provide the best experience.
We use a system called CampDoc to collect this information. Emails appearing in your inbox will be from CampDoc from noreply@campdoc.com or notifications@campdoc.com. Be sure to check your junk/spam as well!
TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM CAMP
You are committing to getting your camper to camp on the specified date and time for check-in. You’re also committing to picking up your camper at the designated date and time at the end of the camp session.
In CampDoc, there will be an option for you to provide details of those who are allowed to pick up your camper on your behalf.
PROVIDING SUPPLIES
You are committing to providing (finding/purchasing) the necessary items on the packing list.
We want your camper to go to camp! Please contact us if you are facing hardship acquiring any items from the packing list.
PAYING FOR CAMP
You are committing to either paying for or requesting financial assistance to cover your camper’s session fee. The initial deposit must be paid at the time of registration. For overnight camp sessions, your camp balance must be paid in full at least 14 days before your camper arrives at camp. All day camp balances are due by May 24, 2024.
Camp Financial Assistance Requests will begin April 1 on our website for parents/guardians to request aid to pay your remaining balance.
13
Did you know we have a full FAQ section about summer camp on our website? Check it out by scanning the QR code or visiting girlscoutsiowa.org/camp.
HEALTH NEEDS AT CAMP
If your Girl Scout has health needs that may require extra attention or care while at camp, please contact us at info@gsiowa.org. Both camps have health centers that are stocked with standard first aid supplies. All camp staff are trained in first aid and CPR. Camp staff with advanced medical qualifications may change year to year.
BUDDIES AT CAMP
Girl Scouts can mutually request buddies in CampDoc, our online forms system. We can’t guarantee multiple buddies will bunk next to each other, but don’t worry! If they’re signed up for the same session, they’ll be housed in the same living unit and attend activities together.
CAMP STAFF…SERIOUS FUN!
We take the hiring of our summer staff very seriously. We recruit candidates through colleges and universities, online camp staffing websites, international camp staffing agencies, through our own Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program, and via referrals from current and former staff. Our staff undergo a thorough background check and are trained in emergency procedures, supervising and caring for children, leading camp activities, certified in CPR/ First Aid, and more. Staff are required to be registered Girl Scouts.
COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR CAMPER
Camp is a cell phone-free environment for campers and staff. It is a chance to focus on what’s in front of us and be present with each other. Please don’t send your camper to camp with a cell phone or enabled smart watch or device. Camp staff are available to answer phone calls if an emergency arises and you have a need to talk with your camper.
COSTS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Sign up now! A $35 deposit saves your Girl Scout’s spot for overnight camps and a $10 deposit saves your Girl Scout’s spot for day camps. Sign up right away for the best opportunity to get into your preferred session.
How to Pay
Deposits can be paid via credit/debit card, cash, check, or Program Credits (Cookie Dough, Munch Money, Juliette Program Credits). To pay with Program Credits, choose “Gift Card” as your payment option and enter your 19-digit Cookie Dough card number.
Paying off the remainder of your balance is a snap! Once you’ve registered for a camp session, you’ll receive an email confirmation with your balance and a link to make additional payments when you’re ready. Please make sure your camp balance is paid in full at least 14 days before your camper arrives at camp for overnight sessions. Day camp balances are due on May 24, 2024.
Camp Financial Assistance
Every Girl Scout deserves to go to camp, regardless of financial ability—that’s why we offer financial assistance for overnight camp sessions! Here’s how it works:
1. Pay the deposit for your camp session online first.
2. After April 1, 2024, please submit a Camp Financial Assistance Request online at girlscoutsiowa.org/camp-financial-assistance. Allow two weeks for processing.
3. Your application will be reviewed and approved applicants will receive a discount on their camp session fee. Assistance is not guaranteed. Note: Financial assistance is not available for troop camp or family camps (e.g., Mom & Me).
14
CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS
These are highlights of our refund policy. Please read the entire policy thoroughly on our website, girlscoutsiowa.org/refunds. All requests for refunds MUST be in writing and emailed to info@gsiowa.org.
Four Weeks Before Camp Session Begins
Refunds of camp fees (not including the deposit) may only be made when written notice of cancellation and a request for refund is received at least four weeks prior to the start of the camp session. Deposits are non-refundable.
Cancellations Due to Medical or Emergency Circumstances
In some cases, refunds may be granted after the four-week cancellation and refund period for medical or emergency circumstances only. A written notice of cancellation with an explanation of medical or emergency circumstances must be provided for a refund request to be considered. Additional documentation may be requested by GSGI. Partial or full refunds will be at the discretion of GSGI after reviewing the request.
Inclement Weather
Outdoor activities including travel may be cancelled when weather conditions are unsuitable. Alternative activities will be provided. Refunds are not given when activities are cancelled due to inclement weather.
PACKING FOR CAMP
Deciding what to pack as you send your Girl Scout for her first, or even second, overnight camp can be overwhelming. We’ve compiled a few different packing lists, one for each type of camp, in our Camp Guides which can be found on our website. As you’re preparing for camp, additional questions might come up such as “is this really all we need?” “What’s something that my camper needs that’s not listed?” “Do they need absolutely every item on this list?”
Much of packing has to do with personal preference. Some campers choose to pack in large, sturdy Rubbermaid-like totes with lids. Some campers choose to bring a three-drawer Sterlite-like container for a bedside table. Other campers pack in suitcases or duffle bags. There is no one “right” way to pack for camp. If there’s a particular item that your family does not own, reach out to the camp directly for the best information. The camp will be able to tell you how likely it is for your camper to need a second swimsuit (pretty likely!) or why two towels are better than one! Most importantly, reach out to us if any item(s) are a hardship for your family and we’ll work with you to
figure something out as we want your Girl Scout to go to camp!
We recommend that you and your camper pack together. It’s important that your camper be able to navigate through their tote/suitcase/duffle bag even when you’re not there with them!
Any sessions that require additional items above and beyond the basic packing list, you will receive a separate email from the camp prior to the session.
GETTING YOUR CAMPER TO AND FROM CAMP
At both camps, parents/guardians can help their camper move in and get settled in their camp unit. You should plan for the entire check-in experience to last one hour (from driving into the parking lot to driving out).
Specific drop-off and pick-up times vary based on camps and sessions. Our Camp Guides (linked on our website at girlscoutsiowa.org/camp) will have our drop-off/pick-up schedules laid out. Below is a general timeframe of what to expect.
Camp Tanglefoot
Overnight campers will need to be dropped off in the early-to-mid afternoon on the first day of the camp session. Pick-up time for overnight campers will also be around early afternoon. On the last day of each camp session, Camp Tanglefoot hosts an optional parent program (about 30 minutes) that takes place at the tail end of each session before campers depart. This is a fun way for parents/guardians to learn what their camper has been up to and meet more of the counselors!
Plan to spend 45 minutes to an hour at camp during pick-up for the parent program, signing your camper out, and loading their belonging in your car. The Trading Post is open during check out for shopping during this time as well.
Camp Sacajawea
Overnight campers will need to be dropped off in the mid-afternoon of the first day of their camp session. Pick-up time for overnight campers will also be at the same time as drop-off but on the last day of their camp session. The pick-up process will take approximately 15 – 20 minutes which includes signing your camper out and loading their belongings in your car. The Trading Post is open for shopping during this time as well.

CAMP REGISTRATION
We’re so excited that your Girl Scout has decided to join us for their best summer ever! The step-by-step instructions below will walk you through everything you need to do to register your Girl Scout and get them ready for camp. Have questions not covered by the information below? Email us at info@gsiowa.org!
1. CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE!
Browse this magazine to learn about the ins and outs of camp. For first-time campers, we’ve provided an outline of the type of camps we offer at GSGI and a listing of dates and sessions to pick from. Head over to The Hub (thehub.girlscoutsiowa.org) to find out more details about the camp sessions that excite your Girl Scout! Once they have chosen their favorite, you can begin your camp registration process!
DON’T FORGET THAT THE GRADE LEVELS LISTED FOR EACH CAMP SESSION ARE BASED ON THE GRADE YOUR GIRL SCOUT WILL ENTER IN FALL 2024.
2. REGISTER FOR CAMP
Secure your Girl Scout’s spot with a $35 deposit for an overnight session or a $10 deposit for day camp. Some sessions fill up quickly so secure your spot now with a deposit! Credit card payments and Cookie Dough/Munch Money/Juliette Program Credits are accepted for online camp payment. Please review our summer camp refund policies in full at girlscoutsiowa.org/refunds for complete information.
PRO TIP! You must be a registered Girl Scout member to attend camp. Details on becoming a member can be found at girlscoutsiowa.org/join.
3. NEED HELP PAYING FOR CAMP?
We can help! To apply, first register for camp and pay your deposit. Then, fill out and submit a Camp Financial Assistance Request at girlscoutsiowa.org/camp-financial-assistance beginning April 1 to request aid to pay your remaining balance. Please allow up to two weeks for these requests to be processed.
4. FILL OUT SOME FORMS
Be on the lookout for an email from CampDoc (our online form system) prior to the start of your Girl Scout’s camp session. These digital forms include the Health History Form, Release Form, and All About Your Camper. If your Girl Scout has a buddy they would like to room with, be sure to indicate that preference on the form. More information about CampDoc is available in the Camp Guide. If your Girl Scout attended Camp Sacajawea or Camp Tanglefoot last year, you’ll simply have to update their information for this summer.
5. FINISH PAYING

THE CAMP EXPERIENCE
Sending your Girl Scout off to camp is one of the best gifts you can give her. The fun, outdoor adventures and friends will enrich her life and—perhaps without her even noticing—give her the courage, people skills, and leadership chops to succeed at whatever she sets her mind to.
At Girl Scout Camp, campers can enjoy a variety of activities like building campfires, swimming, riding horses, shooting arrows, creating art and crafts, hiking, science experiments, camping, kayaking, and tackling the challenge courses–all while making friends. Camp sessions vary in different forms and lengths of stay to accommodate varying camper comfort and experience. Each camp session has a theme in which activities are centered around. Each camper group will have camp counselors designated to guide and support them throughout their stay at camp. All campers enjoy their meals in camp’s large dining hall alongside other campers and counselors.
Each session type is broken out in this section. Check out page 40 for our full camp listing!
Did you know that going to Girl Scout summer camp is something your Girl Scout can do on her own? Any registered Girl Scout member can register to attend summer camp! If your Girl Scout has friends or family who are not interested in actively participating in Girl Scouts year-round but are interested in attending camp, they are welcome too! They simply need to register as a member prior to initiating their camp registration.

Adult and me camps are ideal for campers who are not ready to be away from home or parents/guardians just yet. Adults attend camp alongside their camper. These sessions may be a day camp or one night in length.
Adult & me camps are operated differently than girl-only day camps and overnight camps due to the difference in supervision. Adult & me campers will go from activity to activity together and are not assigned to a group. Activities are facilitated by camp counselors, you’ll meet many of them throughout your session!
Adult & me camps can be a great springboard into future independent day camps or overnight sessions for your Girl Scout.

love this time I get with my
Day camps are great for first-time camp families! They allow campers to come to camp independently, but without spending the night! Grouped with other day campers, your Girl Scout will have fun hanging out with new friends for the day. A day camp day is structured similarly to a day during a longer overnight session, so once your Girl Scout has experienced a day camp, she will be ready to jump in for a longer camp stay next time!
Check-in times for day camps usually start between 9:00-10:00 a.m. depending on the camp session. The day of activities typically wraps up between 4:00-5:00 p.m. Lunch is provided for the day! Day campers usually bring a day-pack to carry their items such as a water bottle, swimsuit, towel, and a couple of other necessities. A detailed packing list for day camps can be found in the Day Camp Guide (formerly known as Parent Packets) on our website.
Like other types of camp sessions, day camps also have fun themes tied to them. Check out this chart of day camps we have in store for your Girl Scout this summer!
My daughter was nervous to go to camp for the first time but this was the perfect introduction! She can’t wait for next year. I love it when we get to paint at camp!

Troop camps are designed for troop leaders to provide an overnight camp experience for their troop with the activity facilitation help from camp counselors. Unlike traditional girl-only overnight camps, troop leaders are responsible for the supervision and maintaining safety ratios for their campers. Lodging preferences can be selected during registration and troop leaders will receive a survey before the camp session begins to indicate their activity preferences. We will piece together a schedule for the troop and help facilitate those activities for the troop to do together. Lunch is provided to troops at troop camp. Troop campers will enjoy a large group lunch with other campers. Troop camp sessions are available at both Camp Sacajawea and Camp Tanglefoot!

My daughter looks forward to overnight camp every year! And I love seeing the new skills and confidence she comes home with.
Overnight camp is an opportunity for Girl Scouts to come to camp independently (without parents/guardians). Overnight camp sessions vary in length; our youngest overnight campers are entering grades 1-3 in the fall and stay for 2 nights (about 48 hours total). Campers going into grades 4 and above typically stay for 6-days, 5-nights.
Overnight camp is great for campers who are comfortable being away from home and their parents/guardians. Overnight camp sessions allow campers to really dive into the camp experience, bond with their friends and fellow campmates, and truly have a traditional camp experience.. Sessions are themed and memorable for campers. Regardless of the session themes, our camps ensure that each experience encompasses the classic camp favorites such as time for s’mores, swimming, songs, games, arts and crafts.
Check-in and check-out times for overnight camp sessions vary based on each individual session. Lodging arrangements (cabins or tents) for campers also vary depending on camp sessions and cannot be guaranteed in advance. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided to campers throughout their stay. A detailed packing list for overnight camps can be found in the Overnight Camp Guide on our website.
Check out the next page for a full listing of overnight camp sessions we have in store for your camper. Be sure to check our website for the full session descriptions and to begin your registration!
For Girl Scouts with sisters or a close friend or cousin who they would like to invite to camp with them, be sure to check out our Sister and Me sessions –we have one at Camp Tanglefoot and one at Camp Sacajawea! For these sessions, the sister or friend your Girl Scout brings will also need to register as a Girl Scout member.
Camp is my favorite part of summer! I want to be a counselor when I’m old enough.

Travel camps are great for Girl Scouts wanting to take their camp experience to the next level! With time spent at camp as well as outside the gates on backpacking adventures, travel campers learn to enhance their essential wilderness camping skills and form unbreakable bonds with fellow explorers. Travel camps expand the independence developed during traditional overnight camps and add the thrill of primitive camping and exploration. Travel campers travel with their group led by camp counselors and backpack overnight in tents at predetermined locations.
I’ve never seen such confidence in my daughter before. This trip was the best thing that ever happened to her.
This was a lifechanging experience. I met some of my best friends at this camp and did things I never thought were possible!

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD AT CAMP!
They love the outdoors—hiking, boating and campfires. Plus, they’re great with kids and a team player. Does this describe someone you know? If so, the perfect job is waiting for them at Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa camps!
Go-getters. Innovators. Risk-takers. Leaders. Their unforgettable summer is here. Our camp community is made up of hard-working, courageous, silly goofy, confident, thoughtful characters. They will work alongside experienced camp professionals who will guide and support them as they promote growth and confidence in girls who are experienced or first-time campers. As a camp staff team, we work to provide girls across Iowa with the best week of their entire summer.

All About Camp Sacajawea
26
Find your outdoor adventure this summer at Camp Sacajawea! Imagine yourself jumping into the pool, aiming your arrow in archery, feeling on top of the world on the climbing wall, or unlocking your creativity with arts and crafts all while making life-long friends and learning from caring counselors.
Camp Sacajawea is also home to our equestrian program where campers learn horse and rider safety, horse care, and stable management. Our program follows a progression starting with three-day beginner sessions (includes a lead-line ride in the arena) and moving to longer sessions as campers become more advanced!
While each session has its own specialty, all campers will have the opportunity to experience an array of classic camp activities. Overnight campers will make a craft, eat a s’more, participate in the all-camp campfire at Greenwood Grove, and swim at the pool each full day of camp. All campers also participate in flag ceremonies twice a day and enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our dining hall. Each group has a snack at the trading post daily (no cost options are available) and shops for souvenirs once during their session.
For overnight sessions that are at least 5 days long, campers participate in our Monday night Scatters Program. Counselors create unique, onenight classes or activities for campers to choose from. Campers receive the list of activities on Sunday nights or Monday mornings and select their first and second choices.
For overnight sessions that run for a full week, campers also participate in an all-camp game night that follows an immersive character game, carnival, or counselor hide and seek format. Each week-long session has a packout night that involves campers cooking their meal over a fire. We also have a choice hour daily after our Me Time (rest after lunch). During daily choice hours, campers will select a session that they would like to participate in daily throughout the week. Many times, these sessions involve hobbies or progressive skills.
Are you ready for the best summer ever? Check out our sessions online!
WHAT’S NEW AROUND CAMP?
THE POOL IS BACK! If you attended camp last summer you may have missed that cool, refreshing pool. It is fixed and we’re ready to splash this summer.
Speaking of dinner, watch for new rolling salad bars and an additional toaster at mealtimes!
A nature play area has popped up at the end of the circle road in camp! With mulched hills and natural building materials, this will be a great spot for campers and troops to get creative.
We have new signs around camp to help clearly identify which units are which as you venture around camp.

FACILITIES
SZYMONIAK CENTER
This lodge is the first building you will see as you enter camp. Our camp office and health center is located in here.
SWANSON LODGE & PROGRAM CENTER
The building with the big green roof is the largest building at camp. This is where we eat meals, unless we’re on a cookout! The trading post is open for shopping on check-in and check-out days here. This building is also perfect for a campfire on rainy days.
GROUNDS AND ACTIVITIES POOL
HIGH ROPES COURSE
Get ready to jump right in! We use it on the daily at camp. Test your skills at the beginning of your week-long camp to advance to a deeper part of the pool.
BARN AND ARENA
One of our all-time favorites at camp is the horse barn. Tack up your horse inside before taking lessons in the arena or heading out for a picturesque trail ride. Look for sessions that specifically include horses in the description for a visit.
Going into grade 7 or above? Walk up the spiral staircase and traverse the train tracks, swing through the monkey tails, maneuver around the criss cross, and lunge for the next lily pad. Choose the Dyno Drop or a zip line exit. For an added thrill, experience the Giant Swing, flying out over the ravine. Look for sessions that specifically include high ropes in the description.
ARCHERY
Our archery range is made for both beginners and experienced archers. Four campers can shoot at a time, and each camper gets their own target.
THE PROGRAM CENTER
The Program Center is attached to the dining hall and is where we get creative with arts and crafts and a costume closet and stage. Try your hand at tie-dye, leather stamping, sticker design, and more. Or try on a dress or silly hat and get up on stage!
29
GREENWOOD GROVE CAMPFIRE
Nestled in the beautiful woods of the valley, camp gathers together at the beginning and the end of each week to celebrate here. We see silly skits and songs performed, sing calming campfire songs, and hear the story of Mayea.
TREE CLIMBING
For campers entering grade 4 and above, climb up into the branches of Amira– our huge White Oak climbing tree! Note: Not all in grades 4+ will be able to climb; look for sessions that specifically include tree climbing in the description.
HIKING TRAILS
There are extensive hiking trails to explore at camp. From short flat hikes with lots to stop and look at, to long vistas with sweeping views of the Des Moines River Valley, it’s almost too much to hike in one day!
We love our trees! We’ve added two white oaks, a red maple, and a Kentucky coffee bean tree. We’ve added extra fencing to protect the trees from all the deer at camp. We’d love to add even more!
To find the perfect session for your Girl Scout, we recommend using the filtering options on The Hub (thehub.girlscoutsiowa.org) where you can filter by grade level, camp location, camp type, and more.

All About Camp Tanglefoot
Your summer adventure awaits with your new friends at Camp Tanglefoot!
32
Set along the shoreline of Clear Lake in north central Iowa, our Camp Tanglefoot is more than just a destination; it’s a “second home” cherished by generations of camp families! Get ready to immerse yourself in an array of activities set against the backdrop of mowed meadows, forested woodland, tall grass prairie, and hilly terrain.
At Camp Tanglefoot, we offer a variety of experiences including day camps, overnight camps, troop camps, and adult & me camps. Though all types of camps will have an action-packed time, the overnight camp sessions are the most robust offering.
All overnight campers can expect to do archery, participate in the low ropes course, visit the nature center, play meadow games and GaGa ball, do arts and crafts, and go on a nature hike. Overnight campers will enjoy evening campfires, all-camp activities, and a cook-out. Campers entering grade 7 and above can elevate their adventure by choosing to do the High Ropes Course including a zipline!
All overnight campers will enjoy time at the lake – swimming each day and doing multiple boating activities throughout their session. Boating options include kayaking, a pontoon ride, Funoeing, paddle boarding, and Corcling. Overnight campers entering grade 4 and above will work on their canoeing skills through our progressive three-level canoeing program. Advanced swimmers may have additional opportunities such as sailing and the early morning Point Swim.
The activities listed here are typical of an overnight camper’s experience; please see the session descriptions on our website for details on specific program offerings.
Camp Tanglefoot invites you to create lasting memories surrounded by nature’s beauty and a vibrant community. We can’t wait to welcome you and your family this summer!
