DearGSCToastmasters, Itgivesmeimmensepleasuretoaddress you through the Club magazine Crescendo. On 17th Jan 2025, we celebrate a remarkable milestone—five years of GSC Toastmasters. As I look forward to this day, I can’t help but feel nostalgic as I still remember the demo meeting, we conducted at Goregaon Sports Club in 2019, where in many of the charter members identified the need of a community club in Goregaon / Malad and came together to form GSC Toastmasters. As we celebrate the 5 yearsanniversary, itisnotjustaboutthe number of meetings held or speeches delivered; it’s about the lives transformed, the fears conquered, and thebondsbuiltalongtheway.
When we first came together, many of the members were nervous, uncertain, evenafraidtospeakup.
But week by week, we found our courage—supported by the smiles, feedback, and encouragement of this wonderful community. GSC Toastmasters has given a safe space for all members to not only polish our speeches;ithasgivenusconfidencein our abilities, a voice to share our stories, and the skills to inspire change.
Leadership, too, has flourished within the Club walls. Some of us stepped hesitantly into leadership roles, unsure if we could handle the responsibility. But with every project managed and every team led, we discovered strengthswedidn’tknowwehad.Iam glad to see the strong leaders produced from GSC Toastmasters who have led the club successfully and served the District as District Officers.
This anniversary is a testament to the power of collective growth. We’ve shared laughter, learned from setbacks, and cheered for one another’s victories. As we celebrate five years together, we’re reminded that Toastmasters isn’t just about speaking or leading—it’s about becoming the best versions of ourselves.
Here’s to the next chapterof empowering each other to dream big andleadboldly!
Dear members of Goregaon Speakers Community,
As you celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Goregaon Speakers Community Club (GSC), I take great pride in celebrating this milestone along with you! It is time to celebrate the extraordinary achievements, growth and excellence that the club has fostered over the past fiveyears.
Number 5 is very symbolic - it depicts the strength, unity and resilience of the fist that unites each finger together to achieve success. Just like a fist, the leaders of GSC have brought each member together to not just achieve 5+ DCP points every single year from its inception but also have outperformed to create more leaders and speakers from thisclub.
As the DCP milestones are tangible evidence of our club’s commitment to excellence, there are a few intangible outcomes that the club has been successful in creating - such as creating a friendly and helpful atmosphere to let every member feel confident and comfortable to learn and grow, to create acultureoffunalongsidelearningandto mentor fellow members to shape the futureofToastmastersinDistrict98. We, as a club have not only produced speakers but also created leaders that have impacted the success of the District in past and current times. The club is truly a symbol of influence and inspiration to many in achieving success and fostering a culture of excellence yearonyear.
Today as we complete 5 years, I want to cheer for all past and current club officers, mentors and members who have been dedicated, steadfast and unwavering in their commitment towards Toastmasters and specific to the club. It is the collective effort of everyone that has kept the club strong, vibrant and successful. I anticipate in excitement as we enter 6th year in this new year to continue with the same zeal, set higher standards, rememberourToastmaster Promise and push ourselves towards helping each other towards accomplishingnewerheights.
My deepest gratitude to all members, whether you’ve been for five days, five months, or the entire five years, your dedication has played a crucial role in our success. You are the reason the club has reached this milestone today, and it’s your passion and commitment that will continue to carryusforward.

Congratulations to the members on achieving the milestone of 5 remarkableyears!
I fondly remember the club’s inception at Goregaon Sports Club— an idea envisioned by Ranjini and Deepak Tekchandani, supported by stalwarts like Vishal Maru, Akshay Singh, Tapas Saha, Vrindavani Mulik, Mohnish Dukhande, and Arunagiri, to namejustafew.

Back in school, I used to be one of the brightest students but never topped my class till the second semester of Grade IX. I would work twice as hard and be worried about the fact that what if I am just good at faking it and someday the reality would be exposed. And it wasn't very different last program year when I had a chance to lead D98 as its District Director. We went on to achieve the highly coveted Smedley Distinguished District Award, but it wasn't without the nagging feeling. I was present at the first demo meeting. When GSC started, I am sure some people doubted the need of another Toastmasters community club. But look how far we have come and celebrating 5 glorious years. Congratulations members of GSC for achieving another milestone. The club is what it is because of members like you.

This milestone reflects the resilience, innovation, and camaraderie that make GSC a pride of District 98. Kudos to the Executive Committees, past and present, and to every member for their dedicationandspirit.

When I joined Toastmasters, it was for themostclichédreasonever—toimprove my communication skills and get comfortable on stage. In other words, I wanted to sound less like a stammering robot and more like a TED Talker. What I did not expect was to stumble into a life changing experience that has been far more enriching than I could have ever imagined.
First and foremost, Toastmasters is not just a public speaking club; it is a magical support group where everyone is rooting for you harder than you root for yourself. Think of it as a gym where everyone cheers when you awkwardly bench press your icebreaker. And if I talk about the feedbackthatyoureceive, puregold.
Even when it is critical, it is wrapped in kindness—like your mom gently telling youthatthestructureofyourspeech needs some more work. Mistakes are celebrated as stepping stones to improvement, allowing you to learn and evolveinajudgment-freezone.
And then there is the leadership aspect. I wasn’tjustnudged;Iwaspushedintoit.
Reluctantly. Kicking and screaming (internally). But surprisingly, leadership turned out to be the secret workout I did not know I needed. It stretched muscles I didn’t know I had and made me realize I could lift more responsibility than I ever imagined. Now, I pause before saying “no” to something scary, asking myself, “What istheworstthatcouldhappen?”
But what really keeps me coming back is the people I met at toastmasters. A fellowship that goes beyond speeches and evaluations. I found my tribe here —friends who will hype up your success, pull your legs till you want to scream, and stand by you through thick and thin. It is my own F.R.I.E.N.D.S.thesitcom...inreallife
What is truly remarkable is how subtly Toastmasters changes you. You may not notice it immediately, but over time, you will realize you are more confident, articulate, and poised—not just on stage but in all areas of life. So yes, I joined Toastmasters to improve my speaking. But I stayed for the fellowship & transformation—and because, for once, I am sticking to a commitment.

From the very beginning, GSC has been more than just a club to me. It has been a second home, a space where aspirations take flight, and individuals transform into confident communicators and leaders. Over the years, I have witnessed our club’s highs and lows, each phase teaching us resilience and unity.
Forme,GSChasalwaysstoodasa club of excellence—a place where the community thrives and where every member is encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
I have been fortunate to be part of milestones that have defined our journey —special meetings, unique themes, joint meetings, and thrilling club contests. Each event was a testament to our members' creativityanddedication.
Celebrations have always been at the heart of GSC. From the induction of new members to applauding their victories in District Contests and leadership roles, every moment has been cherished. Together, we have savoured the sweetness of success, whether it’s a contest win, a breakthrough speech, or a leadershipmilestone.
Our bonds have been strengthened through shared experiences outside the meeting room as well. Club lunches, outings, and travel journeys—be it to Eloquence, Area and Division Conferences, or Leadership Training programsviacab, bus,or
It is a joy to see members grow, find their voice, and step into leadership roles with confidence and grace. The joy of mentoring, being mentored, and celebrating each other’s achievements is unparalleled.
As I look back, GSC has been a journey of many firsts—my first wins, opportunities, and moments of leadership. But it has also been so much more. It’s where friendships have been forged, I’ve found a sense of belonging, and I’ve experienced the true spiritofcontinuouslearningandgrowth. For every member who takes their first step with GSC, I can only say this: you’re embarkingonajourneythatwillshapeyou and fill your life with moments of immense joy and meaning. As we celebrate five years of excellence, I know the future holds even greater opportunities for every membertogrowandthrive.

Many a times you would have read quotes on social media about keeping your expectations low to stay happy. Many spiritual Gurus also teach to stay away from materialistic things / success to achieveinnerpeace.

This makes me wonder, will keeping low expectations really make you happy. I have tried explaining this through two scenarios – When a person with high expectations from himself achieves success, he credits it to his wisdom, intelligence and ability to lead and navigate through problems. When the same person fails, he either blames it on circumstances or learns from it, tries
Whereas, when a person who has relatively low expectations from himselfachievessuccess, heattributes it to luck or circumstances. He believes this is one time success and sooner or later reality will catch up on him. As compared to when the same person fails, he attributes it to his destinyorhislimitedabilities.

Ayearago,Iwasa bundleofnerves wheneverthe spotlightturnedmy way.Public speaking wasadaunting prospect, filledwith anxietiesabout stumblingover wordsandlosing mytrainof thought.Butthen,I discovered GSC Toastmasters. Joining this supportive community was a turning point. The structured environment, with its focus on prepared speeches and impromptu speaking, provided the perfect platform to hone my skills. Each meeting was a valuable learning experience, pushing me out of my comfort zone and gradually building my confidence. One of the most impactful experiences was participating in the Division Contest as a Sergeant at Arms (SAA). The challenge of engaging the audience during breaks sparked my creativity. I learned the power of interactive elements, incorporating simple games to keep everyone entertainedandpreventdistractions. This newfound knowledge proved invaluable recently at my nephew's birthday party. When a technical glitch interrupted the planned video presentation, I quickly adapted, drawing inspiration from my Toastmasters experience. I introduced a lively game that instantly captured everyone's attention. The unexpected turn of events became the highlight of the day, leaving a lasting positive impression on all the guests.
Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for the journey I've embarked upon withGSC Toastmasters. This year has been a transformative experience, equipping me with essential life skills that extend far beyond the podium. I've learned to articulate my thoughts with clarity, think on my feet and connect with my audienceonadeeperlevel. I encourage anyone who seeks to improve their communication skills to consider attending GSC meetings regularly, taking up roles be it at club level, area, division or district. You too would witness a transformative journey in you in the same way I have witnessed mine. It's a rewarding experience that will empower you to become a more confident and an effective communicator in all aspects ofyourlife.
WE REALIZE THAT THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN TOASTMASTERS IS MENTORING AND EVALUATIONS, THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT IF THESE TWO ARE DONE WELL AND THERE IS A GOOD MENTORING PROGRAM, YOUR CLUB WILL BE FILLED WITH SPARK PLUGS READY TO FIRE UPON REQUEST. MENTORING AND EVALUATIONS CREATE ENTHUSIASM, AND ONCE YOU LIGHT THAT FIRE THE ONLY THING IT NEEDS IS SOME KINDLING.

In 2014, I embarked on a journey that would shape my life in unexpected ways.
Joining Toastmasters felt like stepping into a world of growth, camaraderie, and endless opportunities.
Over the years, I got passionately
involved in this community, culminating in the honour of serving as the President of the Noida Toastmasters Club. Those days were filled with laughter, learning, andasenseofpurpose.
But life took its course, and in 2017, I bid farewell to Toastmasters. What followed were years of searching. I tried joining a few clubs, hoping to rekindle the magic I once felt, but none resonated the way Noida Toastmasters did. It was like trying to replicate the warmth of a first home— comfortelusive, connectionsfleeting.
Seven years passed before I found my way back. The moment I stepped into the Goregaon Speakers Toastmasters Club, it felt like a long-lost melody had found its rhythm again. The room buzzed with a vibe so familiar, yet so new. It felt like finding my way back to whereItrulybelonged.
I realized that Toastmasters is not about where you are, but who you are when you’re there. It’s about the couragetospeak, thehumilitytolisten, andthejoyofsharedstories.
As someone once said to me, "If you ever get what there’s to get in Toastmasters, you will never be able to get out of Toastmasters." I now understand the depth of those words. As I reflect on my journey, I’m filled with gratitude for the lessons learned and the people met along the way. It was 21st January 2023, entire club rose to give me standing ovation. I feltIwasthewinner. What a sense of achievement !! i It was my Ice Breaker speech at Goregaon Speaker’s Community ToastmasterClub! Now,howthejourneyunfolded.
I found atmosphere in GSC to be very supportive and accommodative when I interactedwithclubmembersandthen VicePresidentEducationTMAkshay.
Whenever I watched eloquent speakers on the stage, I was mesmerized. I wondered if I shall ever be able to reach to that stage- pun intended! The fear of stage was so intense, that in my childhood, I use to get butterflies in the stomach when my name was called to collect my academic certificates. But then the inner spark to learn public speaking was always glowing within me and never diminished a bit over the years.
It was in one of the business conferences, I heard a speaker mention about Toastmasters. My curiosity drove me to find out more about it. One of my colleagues mentioned that I can look on their website to locate the clubs in my vicinity.Ivisitedcoupleofclubsasguest.
To draft my Ice Breaker speech, I struggled a lot as I was at loss of words. In my professional life, English usage was never beyond making reports and composing mails. It was never about storytelling, human touch and personal experiences. I practised for two weeks in front of the mirror. It was frustrating as I could not memorize it nor pronounce the words properly. I tore my speech and was about to give up. But that passion to speak publicly made me keep trying. Finally on D-day, I was called upon by Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD) on the stage. I started speaking, with my hands trembling, and feet moving frenetically. I was at loss of words and stumbled on many occasions. Finally, my ordeal came to an end as I saw the green card by the timer. What a sense of fulfilment it was! Finally, I had met mydestinyofpublicspeaking.

We have Toastmasters for Adults to break their fear of public speaking, isn’tit?
As a proud toastmaster, I can vouch that the organisation provides a conducive environment and builds the necessary leadership skills. But the journey can begin early only if the parents are AWARE as the foundation of good communication is built at home. As a parent, I see how crucial it is to nurture this skill early in a child’s life. Communication isn’t just about speaking or writing well—it’s about expressing oneself effectively, understanding others, and building connections. Thus, making themimpactfuladults.
From birth, children are like sponges, absorbing everything around them. As parents, we are their first teachers. Through meaningful conversations, active listening, and encouragement, we help them develop the ability to communicate. Creating an environment whereincommunicationflowsnaturally.
Strong communication skills benefit children in many ways. Academically, they help them ask questions, participate in discussions, and present ideas confidently. More importantly, they build self-assurance, enabling them to articulate their needs, thoughts, and emotions. These skills also enhance their social interactions, preparing them for successinschoolandbeyond.
Intheprofessionalworld,I’veobserved that those who express themselves well tend to excel. They stand out in interviews, navigate workplace dynamics with ease, and often rise to leadership roles. As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm. But communication isn’t just about career success—it’s also key to building strong personal relationships. The ability to convey feelings, resolve conflicts, and empathize with others fosters deeper, more meaningful connections.
Mindfulness is another trait linked to good communication. Teaching childrentospeakandlistenmindfullyis like planting seeds in a fertile garden, the results bloom over time. They learn to choose their words carefully, consider others’ feelings, and engage in meaningful conversations. These qualities not only make them better communicators but also kinder, more thoughtfulindividuals.
Over the years, I’ve noticed that people who express themselves well often excel in every stage of life. They leave a lasting impression, whether in a classroom, a boardroom, or a casual conversation.Makingthemostofevery opportunitytoshine.
As parents, we hold the key to unlocking this potential in our children. By modelling effective communication and creating opportunities for them to practice, we set them on a path to success. It’s a lifelong gift that begins athome, withus.

It has not just helped me with speaking but has developed my overall personality too. It gives me food for thought which keeps me going throughouttheweek.
Joining Toastmasters has been a revelation, as it has also made me realize I'd been missing out on life's exciting experiences. Hearing fellow members' stories sparked a desire to explore and challenge myself even more. It pushed me to do the things that I had been puttingoffformanyyears.
This month, I finally participated in my first 5Km Marathon. The rush of running was exhilarating, and it made me nostalgic for my favorite childhood activities.
Another new experience was midnight cycling. Despite being born and raised in Mumbai, I'd never truly experienced the nighttime magic of this vibrant city. I realised it is truly a city that never sleeps. It revealed its unique charm as I cycled through its streets underthestars.
Running and cycling have always been passions of mine. So indulging in midnight cycling and completing my first marathon were thrilling milestones. It's given me a newfound appreciation for life's adventures and a promise to myself to keep exploring andpushingbeyondmylimits.

What would I say?
How would I present myself if calledonstage?
These questions kept echoing in my mind as I stepped into this room for the first time on 1st October 2023. I had resolved to transformmy
communication skills, faithandinvestinginmyself.
Back then, I could barely meet the audience's eyes—fear held me hostage. I would manage only two sentences, usually just a shaky introduction, before fleeing the stage, overwhelmed and lost for words. Embarrassment followed me everywhere, and there were moments I feltlikegivingup.
Now, are you wondering which room I’m talking about? It’s none other than the Goregaon Speakers’ Community Toastmasters Club. This family has not only motivated me but also continues toinspiremeeverysingleday. As I attend meetings regularly, I look forward to growing even further in this journey. Do you, too, have inhibitions like I once did? Join us at this club, meeting after meeting, and witness yourowntransformation.
But then, the people in this room—yes, this room—rallied around me. They supported me, encouraged me, and offered invaluable feedback, meeting after meeting. Thanks to them, I started makingprogress.
Today, I can stand here and deliver speeches with confidence. I can look into the audience's eyes, stay mindful of unnecessary pacing, and express myself more effectively. My mentors and fellow Toastmasters have been instrumental in mygrowth.
When I reflect on my journey over the past few months, I feel a deep sense of pride and gratitude. This room has been the cornerstone of my transformation intoabetterspeaker.

Be it work, personal life, or anything else –the art of balancing plays a key role in making or breaking a situation. In public speaking, adding a dash of professionalism along with empathy can helpinconvertingany speechintoa powerful speech, making it memorable both for the speaker and the audience. While adding professionalism brings structure to the speech, adding empathy along with personal experiences helps in connectingtotheaudience.
Whydoyouneedprofessionalism?
Professionalism reflectspreparation, respect for the audience, and accountability of the contentthe speaker is delivering. A professional approachensures clarity, coherence, and alogicalflowofideas.
Some key aspects of professionalism include:
1. Adding structure to the content: Breaking the speech into segments –introduction, body, andconclusion.
2. Managing the time taken to deliver the speech: Structure leads to stickingto the timeallottedforthespeech.
When I completed my first Toastmasters path, Effective Coaching, I remember how much emphasis was placed on structure, timing and clarity. One of my most memorable speeches in that path was about the importance of active listening While the content was well researched, I realized that what truly made it resonate with the audience was the personal story I shared about helping afriend
through a tough time simply by being present. That balance betweenpresenting facts and sharing a heartfelt experience made all the difference.
Why do you need empathy and personalconnectivityinyourspeech?
Being empathetic makes you standout as a speaker. Addinga personal touch along with humour allows you to connect with the audience on a personallevel.
Here’s how you can add a personal touchtoyourspeech
1. Practice the art of storytelling: Convert your speech to a story along withaddingrelevancetothetopic.
2. Breaking the ice through humour: While public speaking is NOT a platform for Standup comedy, adding light and non-offensive humourhelps in breakingthe ice and making the audienceattentive.
As I progress through my second path, Dynamic Leadership, I’ve started to experiment more with humour and personal stories. My ice breaker speech involvedexploring the leadership styles that my family possessed. Making the audience understand their leadership style in the form of storytelling. By sharing this relatable moment, I not only lightened the mood but also connected with the audience on a personal level, reinforcing the leadership lesson embedded in the story.
One pieceof feedback I received duringmy Toastmasters journeywas to letmypersonalityshine through more. Initially, I was focused on being polished and formal, but gradually, I realized that the speeches where I shared my personal experiences were the ones that resonated most. Now, I make it a point to include personal reflections in every speech.

I worked with them for two years with this incredible group of people. When I transitioned to another role, they organized a heartfelt send-off that still brings tears to my eyes. One of them gave me Rs. 200 and insisted that I buy a dress for myself. That gesture— so simple yet so profound—remains one of the most heartwarming momentsofmylife.
Even today, whenever I run into them at a metro station or any public place, they greet me with hugs and an endearing ritual: rummaging through their bags to find a chocolate for me. It taught me that genuine relationships can break barriers and create lasting change. I will forever cherish these memories as one of the most rewardingexperiencesofmylife.

TOASTMASTERS IS BASED ON BELIEF IN THE INDIVIDUAL. … MANY ORGANIZATIONS ASK THE INDIVIDUAL TO SUBORDINATE HIMSELF TO THE GROUP. OURS IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION I KNOW THAT IS DEDICATED TO THE INDIVIDUAL.

At 3:30 PM on a chilly February afternoon, I had a bus to catch Indore. Fear surged withinme as I was on the verge of embarking on my very first solo trip. Fifteen hours later, I foundmyselfin
Maheshwar in MP, far from the cacophonyof Mumbai. I felt a sense of relief and energy washing over me as I wasallsettoexploretheunknown.
Maheshwar is a sprawling town spread out on the sacred banks of the River Narmada. The ghat was a vibrant tapestryoflife—peopleperformingrituals, bathing in the holy water, and marveling at the river’s beauty. As the sun set, the sky transformed into a canvas of orange, red, yellow, and pink. The evening aarti began, fillingthe air with reverence. I stayed until the last notes faded, feeling a deep peace. The next morning, I watched the sunrise, excitement and a tinge of melancholy in my heart. Later that day, I was heading back to Indore, hence I was determined to capture every moment. I reached the ghat while it was still dark. I sat, camera in hand, watching as the ghat slowly filled with people— Hindu pilgrims on their Narmada Parikrama clad in white, Muslim pilgrims from the nearby ceremony. They both blended seamlessly – leaving space for everyone to sip in the river’s beauty and blessings. The day was maturing, and it was time for me to freshen up and prepareformydeparture.
I left the ghat with a heavy heart, aching from the pain of separation, yet longing for a reunion. It felt like lovers bidding farewell—heartbroken in the present moment, yet excited by the prospect of meeting again. I realized how strange it is that conflicting emotions can so easily coexist within us, leaving us confused yet blissful. Similarly, I learned that fear need not be a dominating force;it can exist alongside other emotions in harmony. I decided to make peace with my fear, acknowledging its presence without lettingitcontrolmyactions.

“Every Sunday, you are excited to go to Toastmasters. But what is this Toastmasters all about?” asked my friend.
“It’s a club which provides a platform for Public Speaking” Isaid.
“PublicSpeaking??
Butyouarealreadyapublicspeakerwho gets invited by several corporates and conferences. Why do you need Toastmasters?” was her Counter question.
“It’s a different Vibe. I feel energized and rejuvenated after coming from Toastmasters.”Ireplied.
“Wow! That sounds exciting. Please tell me more about it” She was curious now. And then I shared my journey with her –“I am a soft skills trainer and a life coach for the last 14 years. Prior to that, I regularly participated in speech competitions, plays and other stage related activities in my school and college days. Public speaking came to me very naturally, but I never had any formal training in it. I improved through trial-and-error approach. While I received some feedback along the way, it primarily came from individuals with limited experience in public speaking, whichdidn'tprovetobeveryhelpful.
When I joined Toastmasters, it was like hitting a jackpot. There were mentors, evaluators, grammarians, Timers and Ah Counters (my favorite) who highlighted my strengths and provided suggestions in certain areas. Every time I thought, “This time my speech was so flawless, that I will not get any recommendations”, I would be pleasantly surprised to receive a few suggestions from fellow toastmasters which enabled me to become better andbetter.
As I am about to complete 2 years in Toastmasters, I can see a sea-change in my public speaking skills. My Vocabulary has improved, my crutch words have reduced, my speech endings have become more engaging and so on. To Top it up, listening to other speakers coming from diverse backgrounds, have enriched my knowledge about different fields. These little changes in every meeting compounded and gave a transformational impact to my personality. My Audience too notice and appreciate this transformation in me.
IfIweretosumup,Iwouldre-statethe sentence that I used when I had newly joined Toastmasters. I had said, “The Reason I look forward to coming to Toastmastersis,Iamadifferentperson when I walk out from the person when I walked in. That much is the difference I feel in every meeting of Toastmasters”

It started with a whirlwind of emotions. The interview was scheduled for the afternoon, but my anxiety began as soon as I woke up.
By 1:30 PM, I was in the placement cell, heart racing, mind buzzing.
Little did I know this journey would stretchwellpastmidnight.
The day felt like an emotional marathon. Roundafterround, questionscameatme like a flood, but something shifted in one of the pivotal moments. One of my responses not only made sense to the interviewers, but I could also see a glimmer of confidence reflected in me. For the first time that day, I thought, "Maybe, justmaybe,I’vegotthis."
As the clock ticked towards 1:00 AM, the announcement began—three offer letters out of twenty-four candidates. The first name wasn’t mine. The second wasn’t either. My heart sank, and my hope was nearly extinguished. Then, I heard it—my name. It felt surreal, like a dream I didn’t dare to believeayearago.
Tears welled in my eyes, a mix of relief, pride, and sheer happiness. I couldn’t hold back a tear that slipped, carrying the weight of all my struggles and sacrifices. The weight of two years of effort, deciding against taking a job right after my bachelor’s, preparing for GATE, and making it to NIT had finally bornefruit.Mostofall,IfeltIhadmade myfatherproud.
That rollercoaster day of stress, confidence, and disbelief ended with a profound sense of fulfilment. It wasn’t just about getting a job. It was the crescendo of my life, a peak moment from which everything for me started moving upwards and onwards. It was about proving to myself that perseverance pays off and that dreams, no matter how distant, can come true with the right mix of effort andbelief.

English never felt foreign to me. As a child, I would eagerly tune in to “Doordarshan,” the sole channel available at that time. My childhood dream was to master the fluency and poise just like myfavourite newsreaders like Minu and Rinki. Watching them during dinner was pure joy—I would sit up straight, my senses on high alert, fully immersed in their words, gestures, pauses, and intonations. For me, their broadcasts were akin to a daily visit to Disneyland. Sometimes, their voicesevenlulledmetosleep.
After school, I would grab the Times of India and mimic the newsreaders’ accents. My siblings cheered me on, and this playful habit soon became a part of my routine, sharpening both my accent andreadingspeed.
ButmasteringEnglishrequiresmorethan self-driven effort; it also demands an environment conducive to its use. Growing up in North India, where English and everyday life rarely intersected, my longing to express myself as fluently in English as I could in Hindi only intensified. Frustration crept in as opportunities to practice seemed scarce. Yet, I held onto my dream, nurturing it with determination, waiting for the right momenttoletitbloom.
That moment arrived when I moved to Mumbai after completing my postgraduation in Mathematics. Joining a multinational bank was a turning point. For the first time, I was surrounded by the constant buzz of English conversation.AlthoughIwashesitant,I took the leap of faith and began my journey, stumbling through mistakes and facing moments of doubt. Every evening, I would analyze my errors, refer to grammar books, and reframe the sentences I had struggled with during the day. Day by day, my confidencegrew.
After six months of relentless practice, I could communicate effectively in English. I longed for more—more finesse, more connection, more joy in thelanguage.
Eventually, I resigned from the demanding corporate grind to rediscover balance and purpose in my life. As I ventured into self-discovery, I realized once again how deeply I cherished English. It wasn’t just a skill; it was a source of happiness, even in the smallest moments, like hearing an advertisement. My search for fulfilment led me to Toastmasters—a club that turned out to be the perfect platform formygrowth.
At Toastmasters, I found my space: the stage.Ialsodiscoveredthemissinglink —feedback. This newfound clarity felt likehittingthebullseye.Myjourneyhas now entered an exciting chapter, and while there’s still much to achieve, I know I’m on the right path. As they say, betterlatethannever.
Itissaidthatyouare the average of the five people you spend the most time with. I believe that spending time with GSC members has always been fruitful for me, whether during meetings or outsideofthem.
The kind of positive energy, encouragement, and collective learning that I feel at GSC is rare in today's world. For many, it might even be a form of therapy. The diverse experiences that each member brings to the table enrich our interactions and broaden our perspectives.
Taking on various roles, including leadership positions, has given me the confidence to believe that achieving my goalsispossible.Ithasaffirmedmybelief in my abilities and shown me that learning is a continuous process. Participating in various contests has kept my competitive spirit alive, which is essential for self-improvement, especially when competing among the best of the best. The enthusiasm and dedication each member bring to these contests inspiremetogivemybesteffort.
Moreover, the extensive contributions from GSC members beyond the club, across the area, division, and district, motivate me to make an impact beyond our immediate circle. This aspect of GSC fulfils another important goal for me: meeting and connecting with diverse people who stand together in pursuit of common objectives.
In summary, my experience with GSC has been incredibly rewarding. The positive environment, the opportunities for personal and professional growth, and the chance to be part of a community that values collective success have all contributed to my development. I joined Toastmaster in the peak of covid, not expecting much to be honest. There wasn’t a lot to do at the time so I thought I would utilize my time doing something of value. As a matter of fact, I wasn’t too excited about the online meetings initially, but then it started to grow on me, especially the interaction with the senior Toastmasters in the club, Vrinda (our club president then), Ranjini, Ravi, Akshay,Mohanishtonameafew.
There was no looking back after that, I did not miss a single meeting for over a year, participated in contests, lost more than I won. I discovered something about my speaking which I think is a blessing, I could make my speeches humorous. This was a discoveryofgreatvalue.
Of greater value was meeting wonderful people and forging new friendships. Apart from the 5 seniors I mentioned, whom I can call friends, I made other wonderful friends, Deepak, Shubha, Mahesh and not to forget, my mentor,SachinBiyani.
Real excitement began when we had our first‘inperson’meeting.Itwasstrange,in a way, we had known each other for a year but had never met. There was excitement and nervousness. People do look different from their appearance online, thankfully, better.
The addiction of speaking on different platforms grew so much that I joined clubs outside of India and I met some delightful people there. I was a member of 4 clubs till recently when I decided to take a break to be with my pet dog, who passed away earlier this year.
Toastmasters have given me a lot over the last 4 years: speaking skills, a lot of discoveries about myself, confidence and most importantly friends. As 2025 approaches, I look forward to getting back to Toastmasters to renew the journey that I thoroughly enjoy. This has certainly been one of the most valuable investments in time and money that I have made. A blue-chip investment, indeed.

In 2014, my Toastmasters journey began at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia —a promising start to honing my public speaking skills. In 2016, after returning to India, I searched forclubsnearby.
In 2020, a timely email reignited my passion, announcing a new club in Goregaon. I joined in January, embracing the community. The pandemic disrupted my momentum, but encouragement from the GSC club rekindled my spark, fueling personalgrowthandresilience.
Inspired, I started a YouTube cooking channel, Vrinda Mulik Cooking Edge, and launched my own design venture, VrindaMulikStudio.
In July 2021, I became GSC President, mentored Mumbai Communicators, and served as Area Director. Despite doubts, I earned respect, leveraging my leadership skills to support and guideothers.
When DPRM and then CGD asked me to serve as Chief Newsletter Editor for District 98, I hesitated. Their belief in me and the promise of a supportive team made me take the leap. This role connected me with world champions and Toastmasters globally. A message from a New York Toastmaster praising ournewsletterwasunforgettable.
When the idea of launching our club’s first newsletter arose, I eagerly volunteeredandwiththehelpofthethen VPPR’s support, launched Crescendo. As VPPR in 2021, I created unique posters, earning praise. I also contributed to District PR as a designer and video editor, receiving the PR Torchbearer Award.
As Division Director, I worked with a passionateteam, makingDivisionDthe first President's Distinguished Division in District 98. Throughout this journey, Goregaon Speakers Community Toastmasters Club was my unwavering support system, shaping my growth in leadershipandresilience.
Toastmasters had been a dream of mine ever since I first heard about it. In 2023, I finally mustered the courage to join, not knowing how much it would transform my life. From the start,Iembraced every opportunity Toastmasters offered. I took on various meeting roles—AhCounter,Grammarian,Toastmasterofthe Day—and delivered speeches that pushedmeoutofmycomfortzone. Each role helped me grow as a communicator, and the accolades I received from fellow membersweredeeplygratifying.
Stage fright was something I grappled with, even when I was fully prepared. Over time, I’ve learned to manage it through techniques like deep breathing, rehearsing, and using affirmations such as “everything is fine.” These strategies have boosted my confidence and allowed me to focus on connecting with myaudience.
Toastmasters has given me much more than public speaking skills. It has empowered me to approach people confidently, build meaningful connections, and better understand others’ perspectives. These skills have enriched both my personal and professionallife.
While my journey is still in its early stages, the impact has been profound. Toastmasters has become the bridge between my dreams and reality, offering me a space to grow, learn, and inspire others. I am excited to continue this incredible journey of self-development andmutualsupport.
