GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE

THE GSC — Since its formation, the Gulf South Conference (GSC) has established a tradition of overall excellence and leadership within the NCAA Division II landscape, capturing over 50 national titles and more than 150 regional championships, while its student-athletes graduate at higher rate than non-athletic counterparts. Having celebrated its 50th year, in 2021-22, the GSC is a charter Division II member that prides itself as one of the first conferences to be created and administered by its CEOs.

The league currently sponsors 19 sports and hosts 18 championship events. Official sponsored sports include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field and volleyball. Prior though the 201819 academic year, the conference officially added women’s lacrosse after three seasons as an emerging sport.

HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT

— In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss athletics and when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference. Delta State College, Florence State University (now University of North Alabama), Jacksonville State University, Livingston University (now University of West Alabama), University of Tennessee-Martin and Troy State University (now Troy University) were the charter members. The league officially began in Fall 1970, with competition limited to football due scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year.

Prior its second season, the league saw significant changes internally as it was renamed to the Gulf South Conference, opened its office in Hammond, La., and began championships in nine men’s sports.

By its third year, the league expanded to 10 members as it added Southeastern Louisiana University and Nicholls State University in 1971, before Mississippi College and Northwestern State University of Louisiana (now Northwestern State) joined in 1972. Membership however took a hit two years later as Northwestern Louisiana made the transition to Division I with Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State following suit in 1979.

The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when it admitted Valdosta State. In 1983, the league went back to the Peach State with the addition of West Georgia. The GSC held at nine members until 1991, which saw the departures of charter members Tennessee-Martin and Troy State to Division I. However, aggressive expansion quickly followed resulting in 10

new members over a four-year span, that began with Lincoln Memorial in 1992. In 1993, the GSC added Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women. West Florida joined the ranks in 1994, with Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas added in 1995.

During that time, Jacksonville State left for Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College moved to Division III at the end of 1995-96, but was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC added welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA-playing conference at any level with 18 schools. Mississippi-Women dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. Following the 2006-07 season, Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Montevallo’s departure for the Peach Belt Conference dropped the number to 14 in 2009-10. North Alabama completed its final year with the GSC in 2017-18, as it joined the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Division I-ranks. The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE

The league implemented a five-year expansion plan in 2012 resulting in the addition of new members Shorter University and Union University (Tenn.) in 2014, Lee University (Tenn.) in 2015 and Auburn University at Montgomery in 2019. The league also saw the return of Mississippi College in 2016 and Montevallo in 2017. The conference also adopted affiliate memberships to boost its ranks, resulting in sport-specific members, University of North Greenville (football), Spring Hill College (men’s and women’s soccer and women’s golf ), Young Harris College (women’s lacrosse), Lander (women’s lacrosse) and Flagler College (women’s lacrosse).

In January 2023, it was announced that Chowan University and Erskine College would join as affiliate football-only members, in 2023 and 2024, respectively, while Shorter would end its full-member relationship following the 2023-24 academic year. In September 2023, additional changes were unveiled as West Georgia announced a move to Division I, while Trevecca Nazarene accepted an invitation to join the GSC as a full member in Fall 2024.

WELCOME TO BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham was born out of the iron and steel industry. Remnants of those early beginnings are preserved in places such as Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark and Vulcan Park & Museum. The city is also well known for its prominent role in America’s Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. A visit to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute gives visitors an in-depth look at that important era.

Today, Birmingham wears a much different face. It’s a place that’s brimming with entertainment, the arts, nightlife, outdoor recreation and world-class cuisine.

Should you have Birmingham pigeonholed as serving only barbecue and fried pies, remember that the city is home to “the Oscars of dining,” with James Beard Foundation Award winners and nominees. Visitors to the city should take in the beauty of down-home cooking as well. And guests with an appetite for live music have come to the right place.

The area’s antique shops are featured in upscale lifestyle magazines around the country. Trendy malls have taken root, bringing tony, high-end shops to the state’s retail giant. Dozens of art galleries surprise enthusiasts and collectors with a spectrum of paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, fine and folk art.

With a comfortable climate nearly year-round, Birmingham attracts outdoor advocates to play golf along two courses on the state’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Biking, hiking and mountain climbing are popular activities, along with family gatherings in green spaces like Railroad Park downtown.

It is a potpourri of experiences that is the city’s greatest strength and strongest appeal. We are a medley of cultures and attitudes that blend beautifully with the Southern charm that is Birmingham.

— The Pete Hanna Center is located on the campus of Samford University, and is the primary home to the Samford basketball and volleyball teams. The facility opened in October 2007 and is named for Pete Hanna, the owner, president and chief executive officer of Hanna Steel Corporation. Inside the building, is the Thomas E. and Marla H. Corts Arena, which seats 4,974, and is named former president and first lady of Samford University.

The Pete Hanna Center opened on October 18, 2007, with a lecture by best-selling author Walter Isaacson. The 101,000-square-foot Hanna Center seats 5,000 in Corts Arena, and varying events from Samford University Commencement, to concerts, high school basketball, conferences and a yearly stop from the Harlem Globetrotters.

Prior to the 2018-19 season a state-of-the-art, center-hung video board was added to the arena. Improvements were also made to the acoustics in the arena the same year.

Pete Hanna Center staff are always available to answer any questions about the facility by visiting the third floor box office.
