Letter from CEO and Board Chair

Dear Members, Donors, and Stakeholders,

This year, Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey (GSCSNJ) nds itself at a necessary and pivotal moment in its history. For over a century, the Girl Scouts have empowered girls to develop courage, con dence, and character, shaping them into leaders who make the world a better place. Today, as we re ect on FY24, we are reminded that we are not only the bene ciaries of this remarkable legacy but also the stewards entrusted with charting the path forward for the next 100 years of Girl Scouting. This responsibility inspires us as we respond to the evolving needs of today's girls, families, and communities with renewed energy and purpose.

Highlights from the Year

FY24 was a year of growth and innovation. Our council served 14,345 Girl Scouts, a remarkable achievement re ecting our programs' growing relevance. Girls and their families are drawn to Girl Scouting because of the unique opportunities we offer—opportunities for STEM exploration, entrepreneurial development, meaningful community impact, and forming lifelong connections with peers and mentors.

These numbers tell a deeper story about the impact of Girl Scouting in girls' lives. Girls discover their passions through our programs and develop skills that prepare them for success. For example, many of our members participated in STEM programs that ignited their curiosity and gave them hands-on experiences with coding, robotics, and environmental science. Others sharpened their entrepreneurial skills through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, learning essential lessons in goal-setting, budgeting, and teamwork. Still, others engaged in community service projects that fueled their sense of civic responsibility and empowered them to create change in their neighborhoods.

Our year was also marked by the launch of the Girl Scout DreamLab™, a state-of-the-art space that has already served more than 2,300 girls in the surrounding communities through 130 programs. From STEM activities and performing arts workshops to badge-earning sessions, the Girl Scout DreamLab™ has become a cornerstone of innovative programming and learning. This space represents our commitment to moving at the speed of girls, offering them modern and relevant opportunities to explore, grow, and connect.

Looking Ahead

As we look to the future, we are excited to advance several key initiatives. Thanks to support from the State of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, we have secured a mobile STEM van that will allow us to expand our reach and deliver carefully curated programs to communities throughout our council. This mobile lab will bring topics like ecology, sustainability, and robotics directly to girls who may not have access to these opportunities otherwise. By meeting girls where they are, we can make STEM exploration more accessible and inclusive, sparking curiosity and a love for these topics across our council.

At the same time, we are preparing for long-term success by revisiting and strengthening the strategic direction of our Council and the Girl Scout movement. As we explore how our foundational areas of focus—STEM, outdoor experiences, life skills, and entrepreneurship—can evolve to meet the needs of today's girls and families, we are laying the groundwork to ensure Girl Scouting remains a dynamic and thriving organization for generations to come.

Investing in Girls, Investing in the Future

As we move forward, we are reminded that none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our members, donors, and community partners. Every time you support Girl Scouts, whether through volunteering, donating to our programs, or purchasing a box of cookies, you are investing directly in the future of our organization and the girls we serve. From funding travel opportunities, scholarships, and camps to supporting local troops and community service projects, the impact of your support is felt far and wide.

When you invest in Girl Scouts, you invest in the potential of local girls to lead with courage, con dence, and character. Most importantly, you invest in a brighter future for all of us.

Thank You for Your Support

As we close this chapter of FY24, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued belief in and support of Girl Scouting. This pivotal moment in our history is lled with promise. I am con dent that together, we can meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, ensuring that Girl Scouts remains the premier choice for families seeking to empower their daughters and inspire their potential.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Financial Snapshot

GSCSNJ remains committed to nancial transparency and the responsible stewardship of resources that support our mission. In FY2024, the Council faced nancial challenges due to rising expenses and a decline in revenue from the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Higher costs in key areas—including the cost of goods, rising bene ts and tax expenses, property repair and maintenance, and insurance—contributed to a nancial de cit. These nancial pressures re ect broader economic trends affecting families and organizations alike.

As we move forward, GSCSNJ is focused on nancial sustainability through program evaluation, operational ef ciencies, expanding relationships and public support, and diversi ed revenue streams to ensure we continue delivering impactful experiences for every Girl Scout.

Girl Scouts on the Go!

Girl Scouts are on the move, creating opportunities to explore the world—whether it’s an international journey to India, a quick trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, or a visit to the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By saving proceeds from their Girl Scout Cookie businesses, organizing fundraisers, and earning scholarships, Girl Scouts take charge of their adventures. Through goal setting and action, they turn their travel dreams into reality.

Maya Dev, an 11th-grade Girl Scout Ambassador from Princeton, earned a scholarship to attend Sangam, where she represented the U.S. and experienced Holi along with Indian traditions in dance, fashion, and food.

Every travel program offers unique learning experiences and lasting memories. Visits to HBCU campuses provide a chance to explore academic opportunities and connect with students while gaining an appreciation for history and culture. Trips to coral nurseries in Florida teach environmental stewardship and the science of reef restoration, while weekends at destinations like Hershey blend fun and learning in unexpected ways. These experiences help Girl Scouts build leadership, life skills, and a greater understanding of the world around them, making every journey as impactful as the destination.

Girl Scouts explored STEM in action at Marine Lab in Key Largo, where they snorkeled coral nurseries, studied marine ecosystems, and gained hands-on experience in reef restoration and environmental science.

a remarkable group of Girl Scouts demonstrated how courage, con dence, and character can drive meaningful change in their communities. These

Girl Scout mission but also inspire their peers to envision a brighter future through leadership and service. Below, we celebrate a few of their outstanding achievements:

Akshita, a recent high school graduate, earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award and a $5,000 Gold Award Scholarship. Her project, "The Vial of Life," tackled a critical gap in emergency medical preparedness by creating and distributing over 100 kits with vital medical details and hosting educational sessions. Working closely with local rescue squads and leveraging technology, Akshita’s initiative equips families and rst responders with lifesaving tools. This fall, she begins her journey at Rutgers University, majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on healthcare innovation.

Himasri addressed the emotional challenges faced by mothers of NICU babies by launching her "Fabric Hearts for the NICU" Gold Award project. She designed and distributed 526 fabric hearts to bridge the physical and emotional gap between mothers and their newborns. Her dedication earned her the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship, recognizing her exceptional academic and service achievements. Himasri’s compassionate work highlights the impact of empathy-driven solutions in healthcare.

Julia’s quick thinking and bravery earned her the Girl Scout Medal of Honor after she helped save a life following a severe car accident. Using her Girl Scout rst aid training, Julia provided critical assistance alongside her mother, a nurse, until emergency responders arrived. Her calm demeanor and decisive actions underscore the importance of preparedness and community responsibility. Julia’s story is an example of how Girl Scouts equips young women to respond effectively in times of crisis.

Madeleine Freundlich – Princeton, NJ

Madeleine, a Lifetime Girl Scout and recent Vassar College graduate, received a Fulbright Scholarship to study World Food Studies in Italy. Her interest in global sustainability and food systems began during her time as a Girl Scout, where she explored environmental stewardship and cultural connections. This passion inspired her Gold Award project, which focused on local food networks and sustainable practices. Madeleine’s continued dedication to these issues re ects the lifelong leadership and problem-solving skills she developed in Girl Scouting. Today, her work in sustainable gastronomy is poised to make a signi cant impact on international food systems and community resilience.

These Girl Scouts exemplify what is possible through hard work, determination, and the support of the Girl Scout community. Each of these young women has made a meaningful difference in their community, and their accomplishments demonstrate how Girl Scouts is preparing future leaders to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

In 2024, GSCSNJ welcomed over 14,000 Girl Scouts into programs that empower and inspire. This achievement was made possible by the unwavering dedication of 5,793 volunteers who lled 8,500 essential roles. These individuals are the backbone of Girl Scouts, giving their time and talents to ensure girls have the support and opportunities they deserve.

Volunteers play an important role in shaping the experiences that help girls grow. From guiding troops through new adventures to mentoring girls as they take on challenges, volunteers create moments that spark growth, foster friendships, and leave lasting memories. Their commitment is evident in every badge earned, event planned, and goal achieved.

In 2024, GSCSNJ celebrated the efforts of 128 extraordinary volunteers , presenting awards to recognize their dedication and impact. These honorees represent the spirit of service that de nes Girl Scouts, and their contributions have touched countless lives.

To our volunteers: thank you for the energy, passion, and care you bring to every aspect of Girl Scouting. The joy of seeing girls succeed and grow is a testament to your efforts and a source of ful llment that continues to inspire. You are helping to create a brighter future, one Girl Scout at a time.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is far more than a fundraiser; it is a cornerstone of the Girl Scout experience, equipping girls with critical life and leadership skills. Through hands-on participation, Girl Scouts develop abilities in goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. These lessons prepare girls to excel in any path they choose while building con dence and resilience.

In FY 2024, the Digital Cookie program continued to play a signi cant role in the success of the Cookie Program, helping Girl Scouts develop valuable e-commerce skills. Of the 8,288 Girl Scouts who participated in the Cookie Program, 6,255 (75%) set up Digital Cookie accounts. Through this platform, they sold 369,073 packages of cookies—23% of the total packages sold for the year. By learning how to manage an online storefront, track orders, and promote their businesses digitally, Girl Scouts gained critical skills for the modern marketplace. At the same time, the Digital Cookie program made purchasing cookies easier for customers, creating a more convenient and accessible experience.

Each box of cookies sold represents more than just a sweet treat—it symbolizes an investment in a girl's future. Proceeds from cookie sales directly support Council’s programming, troop activities, community service projects, and leadership development opportunities. Customers purchasing Girl Scout Cookies play an integral role in this effort, af rming their commitment to empowering girls while creating a lasting impact on their lives and the communities they serve.

In 2024, GSCSNJ celebrated the outstanding achievements of our Elite Entrepreneurs, Girl Scouts who excelled in the Cookie Program by meeting ambitious goals and embodying entrepreneurial spirit. This year’s cookie season demonstrated not only the enduring value of the program but also its ability to adapt to the evolving skills needed in today’s world.

Elite Entrepreneurs for 2024:

Gabrielle A., Troop 30372, SU304

Josephina C., Troop 83824, SU838

Shelby B., Troop 51251, SU512

Savannah S., Troop 11439, SU103

Alexa L., Troop 102669693, SU811

Samantha L., Troop 71147, SU714

In 2024, GSCSNJ continues to address the underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers. Through targeted programming and the generous support of corporate partners, Girl Scouts are gaining early exposure to STEM elds, building critical skills, and envisioning futures lled with opportunity.

Programs like the STEMinist series and the annual Imagine Your STEM Future conference exemplify GSCSNJ’s focus on bridging the gaps in STEM education and leadership. These initiatives provide hands-on learning experiences and mentorship from industry professionals, ensuring that girls not only see STEM as accessible but also recognize their own potential to lead in these elds. Corporate partnerships play an important role in this journey. Organizations like American Water, Campbell’s, the Center for Aquatic Sciences, and MD Anderson at Cooper University Hospital have provided resources and expertise. Their involvement ranges from hosting workshops and facility tours to engaging girls in discussions about careers in elds such as marine biology, water conservation, healthcare, and food science. These collaborations show girls that STEM truly is everywhere and that their ambitions are supported by leaders in their communities.

Through exposure to STEM professionals and immersive activities, Girl Scouts build con dence, curiosity, and the skills needed to succeed. As they sit across the table from subject matter experts and participate in hands-on activities, they gain an understanding of how STEM in uences every aspect of our world and their place within it.

Growth and Independence Through Outdoor Programs

Girl Scout outdoor programs provide girls with opportunities to tackle personal goals, test boundaries, and deepen their connection to the natural world. These experiences encourage girls to chart their own paths, choosing activities that resonate with their interests while working collaboratively with their peers. By leveraging individual strengths within a team, girls learn how to achieve shared goals and celebrate each other’s contributions.

In 2024, GSCSNJ engaged over 1,360 girls through a variety of outdoor activities, including 1,309 in day camps and 55 in sleepaway camps. With more than 50 programs offered, covering topics such as leadership, environmental stewardship, and outdoor survival skills, 31 sessions reached full capacity, re ecting the enthusiasm these opportunities inspire. To make these experiences accessible to all, GSCSNJ provided over $30,000 in scholarships.

Camp Sacajawea and Camp Oak Spring were recognized by Newsweek as among the Best Summer Camps in the country, a testament to the impactful and meaningful opportunities they offer for growth and exploration.

A standout feature of GSCSNJ’s outdoor programs is the Counselor in Training (CIT) initiative, where older Girl Scouts mentor younger campers. Activities such as team challenges, environmental projects, and camp re cooking allow girls to develop leadership skills while forming meaningful connections with peers.

These outdoor programs create a space where girls can discover their capabilities, build con dence, and gain a deeper appreciation for teamwork and the environment. By exploring their interests and working together, Girl Scouts gain skills and experiences that will support them throughout their lives.

GSCSNJ Green Trefoil Society donors commit $1,000+, 5-year pledges to support annual operating expenses. These sustainable donations are the cornerstone for advancing the Girl Scout mission and helping today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders.

The founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low’s bequest of property that would become the Girl Scout’s headquarters kicked off the beginning of planned giving to Girl Scouts. In her memory, the Juliette Gordon Low Society was established to thank and honor friends of Girl Scouting who choose to make Girl Scouts part of their legacy and a bene ciary of their estate plans. This funding is crucial to ensuring that GSCSNJ will be able to provide future generations of Girl Scouts with pathways to reach their fullest potential.
