Service Unit Camporees What is a Service Unit Camporee? A camporee is defined as a camping experience hosted by a service unit that includes multiple troops from within the service unit. The event needs to be a minimum of 24 consecutive hours. A camporee is planned and carried out by a community of Girl Scouts- troops and adult volunteers- during which a minimum of two, all-camp activities are offered to bring together the service unit community. Activities might include earning a patch or badge verifying that the girls improved skills in a certain area, playing a variety of games, having a traditional campfire with skits and s’mores or doing a community service project! Why have a Service Unit Camporee? Because it’s super fun! A Service Unit Camporee is a great way to get to know other troops, girls and volunteers from a given geographic area and help girls feel more connected to Girl Scouts of all ages beyond their individual troops. Service units may submit a request through the online submission form at bit.ly/47XOmMl. Fall camporee dates must be submitted by the second Friday of March and spring camporee dates must be submitted by the last Friday of October.

Horseback Archery Patch Program Circle C Equestrian Center is excited to introduce GSCP2P to a new three-part Horseback Archery patch series! Horseback archery is an ancient martial skill that is rapidly increasing in popularity in today’s modern world. This sport combines riding, with archery, with the goal of shooting quickly and accurately as the horse travels past the targets. The Circle C Horseback Archery patch program is designed to introduce participants to horseback archery through a progressive skill building unmounted practice and safety training that will then culminate in a final mounted session and friendly competition. Earn a piece of this three-part patch after each workshop. This program is appropriate for beginner archers and/or riders. MEET DOTTIE METCALF-LINDENBURGER Girl Scout alum Dorothy (Dottie) Metcalf-Lindenburger has always had an interest in science. In high school, she was a Science Olympiad team member. At Whitman College, she earned a B.A. in Geology, before getting a teaching certificate and going on to teach earth science and astronomy at the high school level in Vancouver, WA. It was in 2004 that her career as an astronaut began after being selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to join the Astronaut Corps. After several years of training, she flew as a mission specialist on STS131, an International Space Station (ISS) resupply mission. Dottie served as Mission Specialist 2 (also known as the flight engineer), a robotic arm operator, the Intra-vehicular crew member (the inside coordinator of the spacewalks) and a transfer crew member (helping move six tons of hardware and equipment). The mission lasted 15 days. In 2012, Dottie commanded the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operation (NEEMO) in the Aquarius Reef Habitat off the Florida coast. The 16th underwater mission sought to develop techniques for working at an asteroid, while operating under a 100-second time delay. Dottie retired from the Astronaut Corps in 2014, after 10 years of service. Since then, she has earned her M.S. in Applied Geology from the University of Washington. She currently consults and instructs at the University of Washington- Bothell and continues to promote all things STEAM through educational programs and with her service as a board member for The Museum of Flight and Challenger Center.
