TheCOSMHHMIIE3InitiativeGrantispleasedtoannouncethiscallfortwoco-leadsfortheLunch& Learn (L&L) series. The L&L series, founded and previously led by Dr. Sabrina Hessinger, covers teachingwithafocusonpractical,easy-to-implement,high-impactstrategies.

The L&L co-leads will organize college-wide L&L conversations on best-practices in teaching and willreceiveasummercompensationof$1,000each Deliverablesfortheco-leadsinclude:

Congratulations to Dr. Heidi Eisenreich (Department of Mathematical Sciences) on receiving a Faculty Service Award

Dr Eisenreich will be using her award to teach a two-part engaging workshop at the Statesboro YMCA designed to empowerparentswithhands-onmathematicsstrategiesfor supportingK-2learnersathome.Thisinteractivecommunity eventwillintroduceyoutoessentialmathmanipulativesand practical techniques to enhance your child's mathematical understanding. In addition, each participating parent will receive a free math manipulatives kit. The class schedule is asfollows:

Dr.MarkdelaCernawasinvitedtogiveatalktotheDepartmentofStructuralBiologyattheKorea Basic Science Institute. His talk focused on his NIH-funded work on the development of migrastaticstargetingpro-metastaticphosphatase,PRL3.Thistalkwaspartofhisvisitfundedby theKoreaBasicScienceInstitute

ThevisitwasfullyfundedbytheKoreaBasicScienceInstitute The12GHzatKBSIiscurrentlyoneof threesuchspectrometersintheworldandthehighestoperatingmagneticfieldforNMR KBSIalso houses several other high-field NMR spectrometers that support research in various areas of structuralbiology.

Dr. Mark dela Cerna, alongside collaborator Dr. Elias Fernandez of the University of Tennessee stand by the 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer at the Korea Basic Science Institute in Ochang, South Korea.WiththemisDr.DonghanLee,ScientificDirectoroftheNMRfacilityatKBSI.Drs.delaCerna, Fernandez,andLeearecollaboratingonunderstandingproteinallosteryinmulti-domainproteins

SeekingUndergraduateResearchMentorsforCOUREmergingResearchersProgram

TheCollegeofScienceandMathematicsOfficeofUndergraduateResearch(COUR)islooking forresearch-activefacultytoserveasmentorsforundergraduateresearchstudentsaspartof ournewEmergingResearchersProgram,whichaimstoofferupto15hoursperweekofpaid researchexperiencetoCOSMstudentseligibleforfederalwork-study.TheEmerging ResearchersProgramhasbeenfundedtosupport25studentsintheinitiallaunch.Students willgenerallybepaid$12/hourforupto229hourspersemester.Theseareyearlong appointments.Inmanyinstances,thestudentwillbeeligibletocontinuethepositionfor multipleyearsasapprovedbytheGeorgiaSouthernOfficeofFinancialAidandbasedontheir work-studyeligibility.Additionalhoursmaybeavailableduringthesummerinsomesituations asdeterminedbytheOfficeofFinancialAid.

ThegoaloftheEmergingResearchersProgramsistogiveCOSMstudentshands-onexperiences intheirfieldofstudythatwillpropelthemtosuccessintheirchosencareerpath.These resumebuildingexperienceswillprovidestudentstheopportunitytogainmarketableskillsfor asuccessfultransitiontocareersinSTEM,aswellasadmissionintohighqualitygraduate programs Byutilizingtheirwork-studyeligibility,studentswillgetthefinancialbenefitofpaid researchpositionsaswellastheworkexperienceintheirchosenSTEMfields ToserveasaresearchmentorforastudentaspartoftheCOUREmergingResearchers Program,facultyshouldprovidethefollowinginformationthroughtheCOUREmerging ResearchersProgramMentorGoogleForm:

Ahalf-pageabstractforeachprojectavailabletostudents;and 2-3sentencesdescribingtheworkstudentswouldbedoingaspartofthatproject-for example:“Studentsworkingonthisprojectwillconductsynthesisoforganicmolecules usingstandardtechniquesandcharacterizethesyntheticproductsusingNMRandMass spectrometrytodeterminestructure.Additionally,studentswillperformanalysisusing NMRtitrationstostudybindingaffinities,usefluorescentandUV-Visiblespectroscopy tostudyopticalproperties,andothertechniquesasneededtounderstandmolecular properties.”

Community Engaged Research Conference with Medical College ofGeorgia

Presented by MCG Savannah in partnership with Georgia Southern University The conference will take place on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024, and will be led by Dr. Shainaz Landge (Biochemistry,ChemistryandPhysics)attheArmstrongCampusinSavannah.
