I hope everyone is getting ready to have a nice Thanksgiving break in a couple of weeks. This has certainly beenaninterestingandchaoticsemester.Idon’tknowwhereOctoberwent,butitseemstohavejustflownby. And now, we are only a few weeks away from final exams and commencement ceremonies! I hope the semesterendswithlesschaosthanwehavehadsofarthisterm
AspartoftheStrategicEnrollmentPlan,COSMhasreceivedfundingforthreenewfacultylinesinmathematics Thefulldetailsofthesepositionsarestillbeingworkedout Thesenewlinesarepartofalargenumberofnew positionsbeingusedtoaddresstherecentenrollmentgrowth Manyofthelinesarebeingallocatedtoensure enough courses in math and English for the incoming freshman students For COSM, we will use the new positionstoensurewehaveadequatesectionsofthemathematicscoursesintheCORE(collegealgebra,precalculus,etc)
Wecontinuetosearchforthedirectorsoftwonewresearchcenters-theCenterforBiomedicalResearchand InnovationaswellastheCenterforVector-borneInfectiousDisease.Thesearchcommitteesforbothpositions arereviewingapplicationmaterials.Iamoptimisticthatwewillfillbothpositionssoon.
Included in this issue of the COSM Weekly is also an updatedorganizationalchartfortheCollegeofScience andMathematics.Theorganizationalchartshowswherewearetodayasacollegeandincludesthenew CenterforAdvancedMaterialsScienceandtheBSBiomedicalSciencesandEagleMedprograms Inthe comingm ong-term visionfor
COSM wil uary. This providestimefortheUniversity’snewstrategicplantogetalittlefurtheralongindevelopmentallowingusto makesureourplanisworkingtohelpmeettheUniversity’sgoalsandobjectives.
On a personal note, I have recently taken over as the director of the Southeast Georgia Science Olympiad Division C tournament. As many of you know, Georgia Southern has a long history of hosting Science Olympiad tournaments and COSM has been heavily involved in them. I served as the regional director for NorthwestFloridaformanyyearspriortocomingtoGeorgiaSouthern. Iamexcitedtogetinvolvedagain.

Dr. Jennifer Zettler from the Department of Biology presented a workshop titled “Exploring the Intersection of Art, Science, and Marine Conservation Using Algal Biomass Waste” at the MidSouthSculptureAlliancegatheringonSaturday,November6th.

SeekingUndergraduateResearchMentorsforCOUREmergingResearchersProgram
TheCollegeofScienceandMathematicsOfficeofUndergraduateResearch(COUR)islooking forresearch-activefacultytoserveasmentorsforundergraduateresearchstudentsaspartof ournewEmergingResearchersProgram,whichaimstoofferupto15hoursperweekofpaid researchexperiencetoCOSMstudentseligibleforfederalwork-study.TheEmerging ResearchersProgramhasbeenfundedtosupport25studentsintheinitiallaunch.Students willgenerallybepaid$12/hourforupto229hourspersemester.Theseareyearlong appointments.Inmanyinstances,thestudentwillbeeligibletocontinuethepositionfor multipleyearsasapprovedbytheGeorgiaSouthernOfficeofFinancialAidandbasedontheir work-studyeligibility.Additionalhoursmaybeavailableduringthesummerinsomesituations asdeterminedbytheOfficeofFinancialAid.
ThegoaloftheEmergingResearchersProgramsistogiveCOSMstudentshands-onexperiences intheirfieldofstudythatwillpropelthemtosuccessintheirchosencareerpath.These resumebuildingexperienceswillprovidestudentstheopportunitytogainmarketableskillsfor asuccessfultransitiontocareersinSTEM,aswellasadmissionintohighqualitygraduate programs Byutilizingtheirwork-studyeligibility,studentswillgetthefinancialbenefitofpaid researchpositionsaswellastheworkexperienceintheirchosenSTEMfields ToserveasaresearchmentorforastudentaspartoftheCOUREmergingResearchers Program,facultyshouldprovidethefollowinginformationthroughtheCOUREmerging ResearchersProgramMentorGoogleForm:
Ahalf-pageabstractforeachprojectavailabletostudents;and 2-3sentencesdescribingtheworkstudentswouldbedoingaspartofthatproject-for example:“Studentsworkingonthisprojectwillconductsynthesisoforganicmolecules usingstandardtechniquesandcharacterizethesyntheticproductsusingNMRandMass spectrometrytodeterminestructure.Additionally,studentswillperformanalysisusing NMRtitrationstostudybindingaffinities,usefluorescentandUV-Visiblespectroscopy tostudyopticalproperties,andothertechniquesasneededtounderstandmolecular properties.”
