LIVE YOUR TRUTH

Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies raise thousands of pounds at benefit show to mark one-year anniversary of Brianna Ghey’s death.

) Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and its allies came together at The Brewers last month for a benefit show, which was being held to mark the one-year anniversary of the devastating loss of Brianna Ghey, whose horrific murder sent shockwaves throughout the UK.

Live Your Truth was organised by trans campaigner and TV personality Jaxon Feeley to raise funds for Peace & Mind UK, a not-for-profit organisation set up by Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, in memory of her daughter. The organisation aims to promote resilience, empathy and understanding among school children by funding a Mindfulness Teacher in every school across the UK.

The campaign will also involve the creation of resources that teach children how to take better care of their own mental health, as well as fostering a greater understanding and respect for others and the things they may be going through.

Alongside the hosts, Gaydio’s Paris Munro and Helen Scott, performers JSky, Smashby, Gay Elvis, Christopher Hall, Alexa Vox, Michelle Lawson, and Amrick Channa, volunteered their time in support of the cause.

Prior to the event, Esther Ghey said: “I am over the moon to be part of this event and grateful for the visibility it will bring to Peace & Mind UK. After reaching our target to provide every school within the Warrington area with a mindfulness teacher, my aim now is to raise enough funds to roll this out across the country and provide every child with the resources and opportunity to learn about and take care of their mental health.”

Jaxon Feeley, from Wigan, is passionate about changing the way transgender youth are seen in the world and believes that events like this are essential in shining a light on the community. He explained: “The devastation caused by the senseless murder of Brianna

has been deeply felt by all who have followed the story.

“Her family have suffered so much, and I wanted to do something as a show of love and solidarity.”

All funds will go to Peace and Mind UK.

D Anyone who was unable to attend the event can donate through the crowdfunding page: www. crowdfunder.co.uk/p/live-your-truthbenefit-show

NEW HAIR, NEW YOU!

) Hair loss is extremely common, with an estimated 50% of men over 50 suffering from male pattern hair loss. However, people across all ages and genders can be affected by hair loss.

Dr Grahame Shaw has extensive experience in all types of hair surgery for male, female and trans clients including afro hair, beard, eyebrow and feminising hairline transplants. He will work with you to achieve the results you want.

Tell us a bit about yourself...

Becoming a doctor was a dream I did not realise until late on. I graduated with an Applied Sports Science degree in 2000. I then went on to become a police officer in the London Metropolitan Police Service. It was only after I passed my Sergeants exams that I thought if I didn’t try to become a doctor, I never would. I graduated from Glasgow University in 2014. Surgery was my passion and I spent several years in various surgical departments such as orthopaedics, burns and plastics, vascular and general surgery.

I fell into hair transplants in 2020 after seeing an job advertisement and loved it. I trained at an International Harley Street clinic before taking over as their Principle Surgeon. I then moved on to a smaller company which resulted in us opening a clinic in Lewes closer to home. I love the work and watching the results develop and see the patients’ confidence change.

Why Lewes?

I am Sussex born and bred. My family recently moved back to the area and I wanted to spend less time travelling to London to spend more time with them. Lewes was the perfect area to open a clinic, in a quiet, idyllic area.

The property has been completely refurbished, modernised and most importantly adheres to CQC standards. It is important to me to create a clinic where the clients can expect the same sort of professional experience they would have in London without having to travel so far to receive it.

How does the FUE technique differ from other hair transplant techniques?

There are two main types of hair transplant techniques – FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation).

The FUE method requires the removal of each graft individually from the donor area at the back of the head, it has a faster healing rate with minimal scarring. Individual incisions are made within the recipient area for those grafts to then be implanted. This method is suitable for all types of hair loss, but the number of grafts removed will depend on the density of the native hair and size of the donor area; we would not want to over harvest leaving the client with patchy areas. I perform this method of transplant as it is the more popular, safer method with minimal post-op pain and scarring.

The FUT method is where a strip of skin is removed from the back of the head and from that all the grafts are removed, negating over harvesting. However, with this method recovery is longer and you are left with a large linear scar which would need to be covered up by growing your hair. This is used for clients who have extensive hair loss and where their donor area is limited thereby increasing the number of grafts available to then transplant. Some clients may wish to go for a

combination of techniques in order to increase the number of grafts available. We can also use body hair particularly from the beard, back and chest. The FUE technique is also used for eyebrow and beard transplants.

How do you differ from the competition?

At Lewes you will be treated as an individual and with respect. Many clinics often perform multiple surgeries simultaneously with one doctor. I perform one surgery a day so that I can give the client my undivided attention. We are focused on providing the clients with the best possible service within a relaxed, comfortable environment, if you like, bringing the Harley Street experience to Lewes.

My key principles when approaching my work is to create an atmosphere of compassion and consideration for my patients, to ensure your expectations are met to realise your desired outcome and that your experience is entirely positive. I aim for a more natural looking hairline. Many may find that when going abroad they end up with very straight, too low or too dense hairlines which are unnatural.

We are also very reasonably priced compared to many, if not most, of our counterparts.

Why do you think you attract many LGBTQ+ clients?

Hair plays a significant role in our everyday lives, it is a means by which we can express ourselves and thereby show our identity. Hair loss can affect anyone and can often be regarded as a sign of getting old and is often fuelled by social media that one must have a beautiful head of hair, but it’s more than that. Having confidence in your appearance can boost self-esteem,

DR
GRAHAME SHAW

improve day-to-day interactions both professionally such as job interview or personally in finding a partner.

Members of the gay community may become self-conscious about their image and hair loss can have a real impact of their mental health.

This is even more important for those who are undergoing gender-affirming journeys. I have treated a number of male-to-female transgendered clients wishing to undergo hair feminisation, and for those who have already started to lose their hair this can have a massive impact on their journey in confirming their identity. By lowering and softening the hairline in an individual it can give an instant boost in confidence, and this is amazing to watch even immediately after surgery as they can start to visualise the results.

Trans-masculine clients, often believe their hair loss is a right of passage in becoming a male and therefore many do not wish to undergo a transplant however this is not always the case if the hair has been lost too quickly while they are still young, due to finding the right testosterone levels. Where we can help would be in creating a more masculine hairline by changing the angles of the temples, increasing the sideburns or filling out beards should the growth be patchy. Again, this can have instant effects after surgery as they can see what to expect as the hair grows in.

Talk us through the procedure. The size of area we need to transplant and the number of grafts to be extracted will determine the length of time you would be at the clinic for but typically you would expect to be here for 6-8 hours.

On the day of arrival, we would go through all the necessary paperwork and draw the hairline and make sure you are happy with this. The head is then shaved. This is for several reasons due to extraction and implantation but also it makes your life easier with regards to post op care. For females with long hair, we would be able to lift up a section of hair, shave under this and then the remaining hair would cover that shaved area. We would then anesthetise the donor area. This can sting but after this you should not feel anything.

Extraction then takes place, depending on how many grafts this can take between 1-2 hours. We would then break for some lunch, which we

provide, and this would then be followed with anesthetising the recipient area. Again for a very short period this would sting. I then make the incisions followed by the placing of the grafts. At the end of the day I would go back over the post-op care instructions to make sure you know what to do.

I generally advise for you either stay over in a nearby hotel or be driven home. I would say that 90% plus of my patients state that they did not need to use additional pain relief during the night and were quite comfortable. I will call you the day after to make sure all is ok and to answer any questions that have popped up. I would be contactable throughout the healing phase and we would have a 6 and 12 month follow-up to check your progress.

Tell us about results...

Clients start to get excited when I draw the hairline on as they start to visualise the results. I use a blue dye at the end of the procedure to aid implantation and again when they look in the mirror they can really see the difference and are amazed. I have even had a couple of clients that have cried wishing they had not waited to do it.

Two which come to mind was a young chap who had lost his hair at the front following cancer treatment and the second was a male-to-female client where this was the last surgery she had waited for. The confidence and selfesteem changes are very noticeable. What is an important point is that everyone will heal and have hair growth at their own rate. We suggest that at six months we would expect for an individual to have regrowth or around 50%, and as the months go on we would expect around 90-100% at 12 months. Some will have already grown 80% at six months but this is not always the case. I understand the frustration sometimes of seeing social media posts expecting the same results. I always say a hair transplant is a patience game, I have been there and understand.

What do you get up to outside of surgery?

I’ve a young family that keeps me very busy - two nine-year-olds and a oneyear-old, all boys, so very energetic and very loud! Both my wife and I are active members of the LGBTQ+ community, we even took our youngest to his first Pride at five months old. When we get the chance we love spending time out and about, the beach being one of our favourite places.

Opening Doors, the charity for LGBTQ+ people aged 50+, has closed its doors

) Opening Doors, the UK charity providing activities, information and support services for LGBTQ+ people aged over 50, closed its doors for the final time last month.

In a statement, the charity’s CEO, Bridget Symonds, said “It’s with a heavy heart that we’re announcing the permanent closure of Opening Doors due to ongoing financial challenges, ultimately resulting in insolvency.

“Since launching the charity in 2016, we have dedicated ourselves to supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals over 50, addressing their unique needs, isolation and invisibility.

“Our work has not only highlighted the unique challenges older LGBTQ+ individuals face but also fostered a community of support and recognition.”

“Despite the relentless efforts of our Board of Trustees and staff to secure a sustainable future for our work, the current economic environment has significantly impacted our funding sources, leaving us unable to continue.

“As we prepare to cease operations on March 1 2024, we are actively seeking alternative support networks for our members. Detailed information about

these arrangements will be directly communicated to those affected.

“Our legacy is one of pride, awareness and a foundational platform for future advocacy. Our work has not only highlighted the unique challenges older LGBTQ+ individuals face but also fostered a community of support and recognition. Closing during LGBT+ History Month reminds us of the resilience and courage within our community. We urge everyone to carry on this spirit of support and advocacy, inspiring future efforts to combat isolation and uplift older generations.

“We’d like to thank all our staff and volunteers, our funders and partner organisations for their dedication, hard work and endless support. Your

contributions have been the backbone of our achievements and outreach. Special thanks to those who supported our Emergency Appeal, your efforts have helped us extend our services through the winter months.

“Your support has been incredible and we hope you can continue to support LGBTQ+ people. We would encourage you to connect with Tonic Housing, Stonewall Housing, elop LGBT mental health and wellbeing and Galop, who all do incredible work with our communities.
