NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! Exercise for the body and the mind. Words by Kemptown-based health and fitness personal trainer PatDPersonalTrainer

and my one to one personal training sessions still allow me to continue to encourage and motivate individuals of all ages and abilities. I remain grateful each time I witness a clients strong sense of accomplishment and the connection between exercise, good mental health and personal wellbeing. Around this time of year lots of people have good intentions to get fit, improve their health and eat better, maybe thinking of the summer ahead and how they want to look. It could now have become a necessity for some people but not everyone can engage well when exercising. My advice when starting is to focus on the positives of what you can personally achieve and get an understanding of your realistic goal. ) I became a health and fitness personal trainer because of how good exercising made me feel. For as long as I can remember fitness and good mental health has always been and still is a very challenging and essential part of my life. My physical training and self belief started to develop when I was a full time student studying dance and positively continued into my professional dance career. I then became a creative choreographer and realised how important it was to stay fit in order to accurately demonstrate new movement ideas to fresh and eager professional dancers. I deeply appreciated the dancers emotional connection to my work and I loved their desire and commitment to never give up. During this time I had the pleasure of teaching dance and drama students who where in full time theatrical training at the highly renowned colleges such as Laine Theatre Arts, Epsom and Italia Conti Academy, London. Working with all physical abilities made me realise how rewarding it was to see the development and growth of my students and most importantly observe them evolve as performers and build their confidence and self belief. Moving forward to the present time

Perseverance and commitment is a progressive development and having the trust and support from a personal trainer is the key to your success in reaching your initial goal. It takes time to adapt to a method and

a solid technique is the fundamental basics to achieving secure and effective results. When you take part in a session and start to benefit from the effort you are putting in the brain produces endorphins which are boosted when exercising and help relieve pain, reduce stress and improve you mood. They are feel good chemicals that the brain produces and they can make you feel better and keep you in a positive state of mind. All of this is a team effort, the client and I are the team. The team is enhanced because of the energy, commitment and trust between each other which opens up many possibilities that take the client beyond their own expectations. I believe life is a team effort. Just remember… you are one workout away from a good mood. REVIEW: ACTUALLY GAY MEN’S CHORUS SHOW ME CHRISTMAS Words by Brian Butler

) Actually Gay Men’s Chorus always delight and surprise, and their Christmas concert found them at the very top of their form. They have a deep rich creamy tone, with bottom and top parts combining beautifully. But one of their great attributes is their sheer vocal power. And Show Me Christmas proved that in abundance. Under the dexterous control of musical director Samuel Cousins, they didn’t put a note wrong in their joyous twohour concert. Sam has a knack of getting them to sing full belt and a capella, then cutting the final note off so the sound soars to the rafters of St Mary’s in Kemptown, where it lingers, resonates and falls back to our ears. Every time they do this it’s an absolute delight. Their rip-roaring opening was Joubert’s Torches, with its marching rhythms and contrasting quiet sections - a brilliant start. In the Bleak Midwinter had soloists Jack Lynn and Bill Meatyard giving us delightfully clear high notes. When they’re a capella, the chorus is often at their best and so it was with the Coventry Carol, with its haunting minor keys. Ian Hollands, positioned at the back of the congregation, had a great tone as he sang and the chorus responded

in the high octane Gaudete, and the new-to-me Joseph’s Lullaby was haunting and beautiful. Live On, with a whole group of soloists, reminded us of those we’ve lost as we are “grateful for the gift of one more day”. Three TV/film themes made up the first half - Rex Admirabilis had its chorus of Sound Of Music nuns replaced with a small group ensconced out of sight at the high altar, sounding pitch perfect. The Vicar Of Dibley’s theme The Lord Is My Shepherd had triumphantly strong harmonies - wonderful to hear, and was followed by the lush melodies of Irving Berlin’s classic White Christmas. Part Two gave us more of a relaxed party feeling, with the group in open neck shirts and sporting braces. O Holy Night, with solos by Nick Paget and Andrew Whitlaw got applause mid-

song - richly deserved. Bethlehem, by the creators of Les Mis, was another first for me, with soft and gentle melodies building to a great climactic ending. A kind of Jive Bunny mix followed and then lively interpretations of Let It Snow and Rocking Merry Christmas put us in good spirits. There was a fun audience participation number with the fiendishly complicated 12 Days of Christmas, which involved a lot of standing up and sitting down in rapid succession, but we got through it. And it was almost time to go - but Actually had one more cracker up its sleeve - a gorgeous Disney medley, and for me its highlight - the timely and haunting God Help The Outcasts from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Can this choir get any better ? I doubt it. First class stuff and a full five stars.

REVIEW: BRIGHTON GAY MEN'S CHORUS 'SINGDERELLA' Words by Andrew Kay

) ‘Tis the season to be choral, yes Christmas brings out all our excellent community choirs in a festive feast. A treat that came to pass in the rammed Dome Concert Hall for Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) and their annual Christmas show.

I will also deal with a previous bugbear of mine, that being the comedy sketches that BGMC always include. This time they were pretty much spot on, better written, better conceived and far better delivered. I loved the fairy drag mother idea and the rough, northern, downbeat diva was hilarious as was the charmingly camp prince and his world weary aide de camp, although as a pantomime scholar I will point out that Buttons works for the baron and the prince’s aide is called Dandini, Picky Picky Picky! On then to the music and what a way

BGMC are a powerful choir, huge in number and capable of delivering the sort of massive sound that one might expect from a Welsh male voice ensemble. That sound was there for sure but there was also something that I have occasionally found lacking and that is balance, a sense of dynamics that comes from being as precise in the quieter moments as they are when belting out a big popular number.

A tear inducing moment with a very fine version of Joni Mitchell’s River from Ben Fowler, a powerful Your Hallelujah from Jonathan Claxton, a classic and charming Till There Was You from Rod Edmunds, delightful phrasing from Adam Betteridge with a Christmas classic and once again the pure beauty of voice and theatre from Graeme Clark with The Lies Of Handsome Men.

“...capable of delivering the sort of massive sound that one might expect from a Welsh male voice ensemble.”

There were a few moments where perhaps the timing drifted just a little but these were few and for the most part they were on top form.

The music team of Joe Paxton, Tim Nail and Josh Mills are driving this choir forward with confident hands and wringing from them some very fine ensemble pieces as well as those solos. And praise must also be given to some very well crafted arrangement from the music team.

Highlights with BGMC are often found in the well chosen solos; this time was no exception. We had a first class Sondheim duet from John McPherson and Rod Edmunds and another duet of Only You from Andrew Farr and Jonathan Taylor.

This was a fully satisfying evening, a few very forgivable wobbles along the way, an audience of fans sadly peppered with rude whisperers, and what appeared to be a party of the seriously incontinent, but despite all that a great night out.

I’ll start by saying that at last the choir have found a sound and lighting team that can deliver a slick and faultless show, it sounded good and looked brilliant, a sparkling and professional presentation that any pro company would be proud of.

to get me tearfully onside. Starting with O Holy Night brings back childhood memories of Dad and Auntie Nellie at the piano fuelled by Harvey’s Bristol Cream. And true to form it brought tears to my eyes.

REVIEW: RAINBOW CHORUS - SNOWING ME, SNOWING YOU Words by Brian Butler

) Where in Brighton could you hear a song in Swahili, a Carole King classic, an ABBA medley and body percussion in one two-hour show? Well, the answer is this musical lucky dip came from the Rainbow Chorus’ winter show Snowing Me, Snowing You, and what a triumph! This is a choir that really knows how to enjoy itself and entertain us too. It was an evening tinged with sadness as the Chorus said goodbye to their musical accompanist of 11 years Mojca Monte Amali - better known as Monti - and she was rightly given a loud and long ovation. But what about that highly mixed programme? They kicked off with May It Be from Lord Of The Rings, a wistful song of self-belief, and followed up with a rousing Gloria by Vivaldi, showing their high-quality balanced and rich harmonies - soaring and uplifting. Eric Whitacre’s heartachingly beautiful Seal Lullaby followed and another Vivaldi offering - Domine. File Unigenite - had glorious overlapping parts, which were perfectly balanced. A Holly Jolly Christmas had zing and fun, with some marvellous kazoo playing, and The World For Christmas was achingly beautiful seeing the festive day from the eyes of a newly born baby.

Carol Of The Bells, always tricky, was totally mastered, and Deborah Harding-Newton gave us a soaring crystal clear solo in Mozart’s Laudate Dominum. And the first half closer of the rather out-of-place Rhythm of Life is one of their favourites and they tore though it at pace and with enthusiasm. Part Two was equally top quality with the haunting Swahili Baba Yetu presenting a new challenge , especially for BSL interpreter Marco. Chosen Family is clearly a song with queer resonances, and their rendition had great gusto and empathy. The audience had a chance to sing with two items and then Rainbow’s smaller groups took to the stage with White Winter Hymnal, gripping

with its persistent rhythms and body percussion. Another small group gave us the joyous bouncy We Need A Little Christmas - jolly, harmonious and camp. Then for ABBA fans there was pure heaven with 15 minutes of their hits, entered into with a quirky spirit and with crazy costumes to match. The finale Time To Say Goodbye - was all for Monti. She will be hard to replace. The Oxford word of the year is Rizz short for charisma. Musical director Aneesa Chaudhry has it by the bucketful and she drives this choir to greater heights at each outing. Rainbow Chorus were at St George’s, Kemptown.

REVIEW: WORLD AIDS DAY CONCERT Words by Andrew Kay

) This annual World AIDS Day concert is just a small part of a massive global movement, the aim of which is to remember those lost to the AIDS pandemic and remind us that there is a huge community still, men and women living with HIV, men and women working to find cures and better treatments, and men and women in the voluntary sector providing services and support. It’s a moving event as well as a joyous one, an act of remembrance and an act of celebration.

Resound never fail to impress with their pitch perfect performances, but more importantly their precise use of dynamics. They can deliver with punch of course but they are equally impressive when singing sotto, so delicate, so delightful. And they are ambitious in their programming, this is a choir working at the very highest level. Next came Rebelles, often heard performing with Resound but here singing alone, and what an impression they make. A few hesitant starts could easily be dismissed when they hit their stride and what a blistering solo voice that soared above an impressive arrangement of Stand By Me, Ben E King must have been smiling down on them. The first half was rounded off by Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus and as ever this group certainly know who

After a short break with mulled wines and fruit punch, all delivered by local HIV charity Lunch Positive, the charity organisation who will receive support from the event, things opened up with the Rainbow Chorus. Rainbow Chorus is an extraordinary group, totally inclusive and very ambitious too. They started with a very fine performance of May It Be from Lord Of The Rings and they set the bar high not only for their own set but for the second half. Seal Lullaby

Qukulele had the tough challenge of following, from a full on choral explosion to four musicians armed with tiny instruments. They looked terrified and that fear showed in their set, numbers that added humour to the evening but would have been bettered had they looked less terrified. But they were there, and they usually are, adding their own support to such a worthwhile event. Next was the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus, always impressive, always smartly turned out and always a pleasure to listen to. Their set featured two solos, the only ones of the evening save for Mr Borthwick, and they both received huge applause. To round off the evening the entire stage filled with all of the evening’s performers and they joined forces to give us a massive arrangement of Bernstein and Sondheim’s Tonight and Somewhere that sent us out into the night with a seasonal glow. It would be wrong of me not to pay tribute to another member of the assembled team, the remarkable Marco Nardi. Marco is a BSL signer who brings something very special to the world of signing, it is often hard not to draw you eyes away from him and his dancing style. This is always a five star event; five stars for the performers - for their dedication and their support; five stars for Lunch Positive; and the biggest five stars for what this all means. PHOTO BY NICK FORD PHOTOGRAPHTY

As ever the city’s LGBTQ+ choirs and music groups and our allies gather at St Mary’s Church in Kemptown for an evening of great music. This year the show, compered by John Borthwick, who also gave us a couple of numbers of his own, was opened by Resound.

to deliver an impressive programme, starting with a powerful rendition of Just Can’t Get Enough. Theirs is a full sound, solid and strong and last night they were in fine voice.

was charmingly delivered, Rhythm Of Life was a crowd-pleasing musical romp and they topped it all off with the challenging and complex Con Te Partiro (Time to Say Goodbye), which they nailed, no small feat!
