Summer 2019.

Stormwater events occur 4-10 times during the year, representing up to 85% of the city budget, in direct damage to both private and public property, and due to the climate crisis, they will only become more frequent.

Local challenges are linked directly to the disappearance of a pre-existing marshland, due to land development, compromising the biome’s capacity to absorb stormwater, which flows away from existing pervious grounds.

The project focuses on two main strategies:

1.Connect our harvesting system to nearby catch basins and absorb the surface runoff before it overflows the sewage system.

2.Recognize program voids and existing infrastructure of our harvesting sites, to allocate the current programmatic needs in our extensions.

Fall 2019.

Decades of failed policies and speculation have enabled Sprawl to spread pollution across the Hudson Valley. The GND presents itself as an opportunity to create programs that empower stakeholders, and redirect resources towards the reversal of this trend.Sprawl has been one of the major contributors to the increase in carbon emissions, due to its dependence on private vehicles, and by replacing natural carbon sequestering landscapes with artificial lawns; our strategy addresses both effects simultaneously.The infrastructure is already there, all we need is to do is update and equip it to actually serve its purpose: connect. Taking advantage of these connections, we bolster existing activity nodes, and promote the creation of new ones. Newly protected grounds derived from enforcing existing guidelines, create room for green corridors that puncture the boundaries of isolated communities, integrating them to a new forest linking landscape, with open public spaces.The project doesn’t reach its maximum potential when all the paths are built, but when the lifestyle of suburban dwellers becomes armonius with their surroundings.

Spring 2020.

During a storm event, Beirans seek safety at local institutions. After the storm passes, they find themselves displaced in emergency shelters built by foreign aid. To rebuild they must rely on poor quality materials and non-resilient techniques.This cycle leaves generations of communities vulnerable to recurring natural events.

Once identified as the “Cane City” that belonged to the Mozambican population and the “Cement City” that was built by Portuguese has now been shaped by successive waves of disaster and political upheaval. If urban expansion continues according to Beira’s Vision 2035 Masterplan, the demand for imported and unsustainable materials will increase, as will the the replacement of productive landscapes with urban development.

Our project proposes framework that shifts the existing post-emergency reconstruction process into a more inclusive resilient one, anchoring our efforts on local social infrastructures and regional productive landscapes.
