Description
Proposal
Rapid urban growth has expanded onto existing productive land of Akaki, and manipulated the terrain of the river and its tributaries in unnatural ways. Akaki’s river system has been currently reduced to an open sewer, increasing flood damage and loss of agriculture land.
Our proposal is to create a system that enables beneficial co-existence of housing, productive landscapes including agriculture and water by taking advantage of the terrains. Network of high middle and low ground will result in nature-based solutions for resilient river programs and urban transformation on multiple scales and multiple levels 4

Description
Proposal
The expansion of highways in the 1960s led to the growth of large shopping centers in the Hudson Valley that continue to burden the ecological and social landscape. Large portions of forests are cleared and streams and storm water ponds are canalized to accommodate these shopping centers.
This project takes the case of Newburgh to re-imagine the spatial and systemic changes that can be brought to the experience of consumption and distribution of goods and the component of recreation that is invariably associated with retail, and turn it into it’s original state of rich ecological wetland that is overlaid with retail and recreation space 13

Description
Proposal
Even though storm water events occur four to ten times during the year in Hoboken, New Jersey, they cause major indirect damages to both private and public property. These challenges are linked directly to the disappearance of a pre-existing marshland, due to land development. Compromising the biome’s capacity to absorb storm-water, which flows away from existing pervious grounds.
Strategy A Connect our harvesting system to nearby catch basins and absorb the surface runoff before it over flows the sewage system. Strategy B Recognize program voids and existing infrastructure of our harvesting sites, to allocate the current programmatic needs in our extensions. 17

Cotton Kingdom GSAPP Spring Semester 2019 Faculty Sara Zewde Seminar This seminar investigates the relationship between major contemporary issues in urban discourses with the documented conditions of cities in Olmsted’s 1861 book, Journeys and Explorations in the Cotton Kingdom. The seminar positions Olmsted’s journey not only as source material but also as methodological proposition, in reflection on the significance and methods of research and representation in design practice.

“Sunshine Gave Way to Darkness”: Mass Incarceration in Cotton Kingdom Thomas. W. Gee “Black people found themselves yet again powerless and relegated to convict leasing camps that were, in many ways, worse than slavery. Sunshine gave way to darkness” - Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Cotton Kingdom now is mass incarceration. The research for [title of your project] begins by re-tracing Olmsted’s journey to the Thomas W. Gee plantation in Stony Creek, Sussex County,VA. His writing depicts a sparsely populated town with a small population of poor white people, a few big plantations owned by the wealthier population, and a large enslaved population. An analysis of Sussex County today reveals that not much has changed since Olmsted’s visit. Sussex County remains a sparse population of predominantly poor white people however instead of the wealthy plantations came the prison industry where the Black population density is aligned with the Sussex State Prison location. At a national level, analysis indicates that the Confederacy states are still practicing enslavement in its modern form today: mass incarceration.

“Alighted from a train of cars, at a country station. Besides the shanty that stood for a station-house, there was a small, comfortable farm-house on the right, and a country store on the left, and around them, perhaps, fifty acres of clear land, now much flooded with muddy water ;-all framed in by thick pine wood.”- P.61 Cotton Kingdom
“Again ; and this brought us soon to an old clearing, just beginning to be grown over with pines, in which was the old cabin of rotten logs, one or two of them falling out of rank on the door side, and the whole concern having a dangerous lurch to one corner, as if too much whiskey had been drunk in it: then a more recent clearing, with a fenced field and”- P.64 Cotton Kingdom
“How many miles, sar ? ha! masser, I don 'zactly reckon I ken tell ou--not 'cisely, sar-how many miles it is, not zactly, 'cisely, sar.” “How is that?-you don't what ?” “I don't zactly reckon I can give you de drection excise about de miles, sar." “Oh! but how many miles do you think it is ; is it two miles ?" “Yes, sar; as de roads is now, I tink it is just about two miles. Dey's long ones, dough, I reckon." - P.68 Cotton Kingdom
”I judged, also, from her manners and the general appearance of the house, as well as from the charges, that, at such times, the company might be of a rather respectable character. The appearance of the other public-house indicated that it expected a less select patronage.”- P.75 Cotton Kingdom

He had owned the place but a few years, and had not had time to make much improvement about the house yet..”- P. 78 Cotton Kingdom

“Doing the work with his own hands. “It's dangerous work (unhealthy ?), and a negro's life is too valuable to be risked at it. If a negro dies, it's a considerable loss, you know.”- P. 89 Cotton Kingdom “ A number of the old oaks still stood in the rear of the house, and, until Mr. W. commenced “his improvements," there had been some in its front. But as he deemed these to have an aspect of negligence and rudeness, not quite proper to be associated with a fine house, he had cut them away, and substituted formal rows of miserable little ailanthus trees. I could not believe my ears till this explanation had been twice repeated to me.”- P. 88 Cotton Kingdom
