EXTERIOR LIVING ROOMS Broadway between 136th and 152nd, Manhattan, NY Core I, Fall 2018 Critic: Amina Blacksher The project started as an investigation of transit spaces appropriated for social gatherings. It locates opportunities to introduce exterior living rooms based on everyday building blocks of Broadway: scaffolding that serves as a shelter, infostands that disseminate information, and mural painted store shutters that enliven backgrounds.

These structures that serve as exterior living rooms are created out of scaffolding, an accessible material that is easy to assemble, and is formed into four different ways to accommodate four activities: relaxation, art exhibitions, kiosks, and seating area for dining or playing board games and dominos.

FOR THE EMOTIONALLY ILLITERATE Sara D. Roosevelt Park, Manhattan, NY Core II, Spring 2019 Critic: Christoph Kumpusch People have been focusing on IQ for decades in order to determine one’s ability to perform different tasks. I have grown up thinking that having a high IQ ensures success in every field, however, what I have experienced throughout my life made me realize that understanding emotions is as valuable as other types of intelligence are. Even though there has been an increased awareness of emotional health in the recent years, numbers of people still avoid talking about it, partly because of the vulnerability, and partly because of the lack of understanding of their own feelings. Emotions can be a gray zone in one’s mind and I am interested in exploring ways in which people can understand them better; how can environments that we create make us reflect on our emotions? Is experiencing emotions as valuable as it is to read about them in order to understand them? Are emotions universal? What triggers emotions and is it possible to manipulate the actions and reactions? Should architecture shape the emotions or is it what we feel that molds our environment? What is the container and what is contained?

HOUSING In collaboration with Genevieve Mateyko Courtland Ave. at 151st and 152nd St., The Bronx, NY Core III, Fall 2019 Critic: Adam Frampton A place of different scales of permanence in housing where traditional models of domestic living coupled with ideas of accessibility and aging in place can coincide and overlap with newer normals of living transiently.

The massing, a stack of shifting slabs that terrace towards the SE, following the topography and maximizing sun exposure of the units and allowing each GF unit to have a community garden, reflects the plan and the section. The gradient of the mass reflects the gradient in transiency of the building’s residents.

NEWBURGH ROWING CLUB Newburgh, NY ADV IV, Spring 2020 Critic: Robert Marino Newburgh Rowing Club is a micro-urban project that brings together three user groups — rowers, passers-by, and boat-makers — while it extends Hudson River Waterfront Trail and connects it to Quassaick Creek. The three volumes — boat workshop, exterior boat storage, and an operational unit with gym, cafe, offices — are unified with the continuous, vernacular roof.

A CITY FOR CHILDCARE Architecturalized Landscape Flushing Waterfront District, Queens, NY ADV V, Fall 2020 Critic: Bryony Roberts There are many ways in which this generation’s childhood is different from that of the last generation, but one of the biggest contrasts is the degree to which it is being spent indoors. Some of the reasons include the increase in time spent interacting with electronic devices, the emphasis on scheduled activities and achievements, concerns about sun exposure, and lack of safe outdoor places to play. And it is not only the children that are spending less time outside — it is the adults as well. These are some of the driving forces for this project; why health and wellness became the focus of it.

The main question became how to architecturalize landscape? How to maintain if not also increase the green space while also creating room for the core program: Housing, Retail, and Childcare Centre?

How to create a neighborhood that will accommodate residents, create opportunities for income, while providing a safe, dynamic, and healthy environment?

THREE SISTERS In collaboration with Isabella Bartenstein and Aaron Sage McKenna Square Park, Manhattan, NY ADV VI, Spring 2021 Critic: Hilary Sample In order to bring the community back to McKenna Square Park, we started thinking about the Native American Three Sisters Planting Method, which involves planting three plants together which form a symbiotic relationship. We applied that concept throughout the site to create an improved symbiotic relationship between the neighbourhood and the park. We utilised the park’s existing assets to repurpose the existing arcade structure as a greenhouse, reimagine the seating, and add additional landscape back into the park.

RIETVELD I DE STIJL Architecture Apropos Art, Fall 2020 Critic: Steven Holl + Dimitra Tsachrelia I tried to come up with a unique analysis of Rietveld’s Schroeder House through the lens of De Stijl. Because the original representations of the house (2D and 3D drawings) embodied De Stijl’s principles so well, yet, did not include perspectival but solely axonometric drawings, I came up with an idea of introducing perspective into my process along with the (primary) color blocking. Because I try to make sure that the clear logic is present in whatever design I make, I saw a similarity between my goals and the artistic process of Van der Leck (turning a realistic sketch, in my case a photograph of the house, into an abstract perspectival collage). My analysis was based on strict grids that I created from the plan and elevation of the house, and further modified through color blocking. Through this process, I noticed that the grid of the floorplan closely embodies the grid of the facade, hence the early 2D collages ended up being very similar. In my final steps, I decided to enter the house and apply the same logic of the perspective on the interior views, abstracting elements, such as kitchen sink, faucet, windows, chairs. And even though the aforementioned elements are represented by one or two lines, when seen all together, one can understand the composition and what stands behind it.

GREENPOINT THEATER In collaboration with Amber Shen, Vera Montare Savory, Yuan Li Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY AT IV, Fall 2019 Critic: Stephan Potts This building embodies an integrated approach to building design in order to create a well-built and functionally advanced theatre that is also visually compelling. It is a base for a vibrant life of spectators and performers, supported by simple yet thought-through appearance, sustainable elements such as green roof, and large glass openings towards the waterfront.

FOOD TERMINAL In collaboration with Alina Abouelenin, Camille Brustlein, Begum Karaoglu, Maru Perez Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY AT V, Spring 2020 Critic: Scott A. Demel For centuries food has been a unifier, bringing people together from all walks of life. It is something everyone can relate to no matter someone’s ethnicity, age or socioeconomic background. Thus, it proves to be an invaluable subject around which a new neighborhood campus can be developed and envisioned, exploring integrated systems at an urban scale. With this new waterfront campus, located in Sunset Park, we intend to present a new hub for the neighborhood where food is not only to be enjoyed but also becomes an invaluable subject of interest with which a number of systems can be explored, relating to energy, water, and transit including: new types of urban farming practices such as indoors, outdoors, and mobile.

Providing an alternative source for sustainable energy.

Providing new opportunities for both research and learning endeavours.

Offer alternative residential living experiences for students that integrate farming.

Dining and cooking experiences.

Rethinking and reimagining farm to table ideas and allowing new commercial centres for rest produce.

BLUR BUILDING REIMAGINED ADR I, Fall 2018 Critic: Joshua Uhl In this exercise, I inverted Blur Building by DS+R; everything that exists in real life translates into a negative. By stacking sheets of acrylic, where each sheet represented a section-cut through the pavilion’s structure, I got a visually present yet physically intangible form of this project. When the acrylic model is placed in a dark environment, and light is positioned against its edge, light particles, photons, bounce off of all the cutouts, creating an illuminated, dynamic cloud — a blur.
