crown shyness SPRING 2020 IN COLLABORATION WITH TUNG NGUYEN FRINGE TIMBER | LINDSEY WIKSTROM Crown shyness is a naturally adaptive phenomenon where crowns of trees do not touch each other, forming an optimized canopy. It’s a reactive and polite mechanism, integrated into the tree’s biology and movement; a cohesive way of living, independently and, yet connected.

The Living Lab is a proposal of that livelihood, where the boundary between forest and building exist with a shyness that is never invasive, and goes beyond co-existing to actually forming a resilience together through building knowledge. This project explores knowledge sharing in three dimensions: between forest and non-forest, humans and machines , and home and work.

The Living Lab reflects a system of thinking about how we work, how we live, and how we use materials sustainably to build the environment in which we inhabit. People live and work on site.

It relies on a 1 to 2, tree harvesting to planting cycle, where timber is sustainably harvested in the forest to build and operate the lab. In 50 years when the cycle of replanting trees begins anew, the Living Lab will have grown to be self-sustaining and self-educating.

The people and machines that live and work here will have a wealth of collected knowledge on sustainable forestry, timber engineering, and automation. And crown shyness, will maintain the ability for the forest and Living Lab, human and machine, to co-exist independently yet connected.

slow water FALL 2019 IN COLLABORATION WITH ALICE FANG HOUSING | DAISY AMES Due to the lack of access to regular maintenance and inability for water infrastructure to adapt to increased population growth and change in climate, “Slow Water” puts forth a new model for collecting, cleaning and delivering water to residents in the South Bronx.

According to the 2017 New York Census data, 30% of households are single mothers taking care of children under the age of 18. In addition, hearing firsthand from families there are a lack of safe spaces for kids to as well. Borrowing from cultures celebrating water’s performative relationship with the human body, such as Japan’s onsens/sentos, water became the main vessel for enhancing the health of families. This proposal for future living provides housing for single mothers who share similar lifestyles and goals of raising their children within a supportive community and pushes for parent-child and parent-community interpersonal relationships guided by a spectrum of individual and shared water experiences to improve livelihood.

Slow Water hopes to bridge something beyond an economic model of housing sustainability, striving for human driven empathetic spaces. Instead of a hard line distinctions between spaces, the programs are interspersed among the living units, weaving in and out between spaces as a way to connect public and private, wet and dry, shared and individual.

neighborhood jacket SPRING 2021 IN COLLABORATION WITH JOEL MCCULLOUGH AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE | HILARY SAMPLE In the spirit of doing “as little as possible”, the intervention questions the traditional framework of care, by redefining the role of the “maintenance worker” and rethinking modes of community engagement. The aim is to design the fabrication and construction of a communitymade Maintenance Worker’s Jacket directly in the park. As such, care becomes a conversation for the neighborhood through Mckenna Square.

The jacket design considers reversibility.

Therefore, the assembly itself is already a single pocket wrapping the body, becoming accessible through a simple incision into a layer of fabric, for tools and objects of maintenance and care.

Personalization became material customization, recycled patchwork, patterning and dying as the primary registration. The jacket is unfinished in it’s character yet intends to serve as a blank canvas for conversation and customization. The park is further integrated into each step of the jacket construction through engaging the high school, local bodegas, word up, and redesigning the pavilion.

In conclusion, this project of designing a jacket and designing how the jacket is made on site, serves as a study in how we can rethink community engagement in design, and in the process of care and maintenance -- where the process of intervening as little as possible actually becomes a springboard for agency, care, teaching, and learning.

air as a conduit for inequity, privilege, and restoration

open air campus FALL 2020 EN PLEIN AIR | NAHYUN HWANG Marginalized communities often bear the burden of pollution inequity, using air pollution as a means of privileging certain spaces over others.

Located in the South Bronx, Mott Haven’s air pollution rates and children’s asthma cases are the highest in the city. There are an abundance of waste dumping centers, toxic release points, industrial hubs servicing Manhattan, and most pressing, high volumes of truck traffic and emissions from the major highways. In the middle of this bubble of deadly air, are approximately half of the pre-K to 8th grade students in the South Bronx, all attending schools located within 150 meters of a highway, truck route, or waste station. The project looks to parks as a way to reclaim polluted air for health education and asthma prevention in Mott Haven’s public schools.

Informed by historical research on weaponized air and open air schools, the proposal is an open air health campus, located on the park, engaging breathing programs specifically targeting asthma. The campus is organized through combining educational and play spaces with restorative breathing environments, each which engage air through specific relationships with the human body, materiality, and movement.

The center will partner with neighboring schools as an extension of their school buildings and curriculums. The hope is, with this partnership, care for children in schools will extend to focus on the air, physical and mental health of the student as a product of the environment in which they live in and breath.

living room SPRING 2019 LIBRARY (AS A THIRD SPACE) | ERICA GOETZ The Living Room is a library for storytelling, situated in Sara D. Roosevelt Park, where the intersection of Asian/Asian-American, African American, LatinX, and queer communities culminate. The purpose of the library is to share and document the under-represented and forgotten histories of the community: oral histories, unpublished written histories, cultural artifacts/sounds etc.

The program of the Living Room revolves around the intersecting programs of a reading rooms and storytelling studios, further qualified as spaces of learning and experience, respectively.

Four large spaces encompass the learning zones: a main reading room, a children’s reading room, an artifact archive, and a theater. The moments in which these zones intersect become the experience spaces: Story Loft, Art Studio, Documentation Studio, Recording Studio. The connection between these two programs bridge through a third space, manifested through the porous openings pulled out from the heart of the building form to open up physically and visually to the city and park. These spaces act as the connecting wall between learning and experience, but also between library and the greater city.

inward inwood FALL 2018 BROADWAY STORIES | JOSH UHL Tracing the history of land occupation from the Lenape Native Americans, to the Dutch, to present-day Inwood, land and water redistribution has played a huge role in the partition of space and the building of new infrastructure.

As a response to the prompt “Grand Interior”, this intervention serves as a physical and psychological confrontation of flood water rise in Inwood. The excavation between buildings and embedded hydropump system serve as a method to capture, redirect, and alleviate overflowing water, while the spiraling structure within should be understood as a monumental statement and symbol of impermanence; a reminder of a flawed urban and global history and trajectory towards global warming.

Long Island City has long been an area of bursting potential. With the failure of Amazon’s headquarters, LIC has the opportunity to establish a new cornerstone industry and waterfront experience.

LIC carbon city

This proposal looks towards the timber industry to fill this potential. Rather than always relying on an often redundant and transportation intensive global timber network, New York State’s local timber swamps will be able to be harvested and transported directly to New York City, where timber can be processed, manufactured, and brought immediately to the local construction site.

With a self sufficient network fo timber processing as well as timber building construction, Long Island City will become a hub and model of the new Carbon City.

Theater construction at 18 Greenpoint Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11222. The project borrows and extends towards the industrial fabric of the surrounding neighborhood, and the desire to gain public engagement and increase waterfront visibility and accessibility.

The building is designed with a kinetic façade, using panels that responds to light. The cantilevering public front of the theater is orientated towards the water. The structure relies on 3 primarily large span trusses, which give the buildings its unique form. The public circulation exists on the exterior of the façade, leading to a public green roof which acts as both a water collection system, and a public performance space.

Directly below the green roof is the large indoor theater space.

This study of Sunset Park developed through the understanding that the current neighborhood houses unideal living conditions; a landscape presently dominated by industry, truck traffic, air pollution, and lack of pedestrian access to the waterfront. Through developing community and educational spaces, the Sunset Park Botanical Garden aims to improve the livelihood of the neighborhood.

This garden-research center we are developing is a new typology for botanical garden that tests resilience to flooding and climate change, so we can study how our natural and urban systems respond.

The garden will mitigate stormwater, enhance air quality, and add tremendous value to real estate to Sunset Park by displacing and redistributing current underused buildings.
