Tree Trace GSAPP Advanced VI Studio, Spring 2021 Critics - Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia Partner - Melissa Chervin The Tree Trace is an office and exhibition space for the faculty of the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI). The building occupies the boundary between the forest and the open courtyard on its site at the Montgomery Campus of Bard College.

The building’s footprint is an offset from the Tree Trace, a line drawn on the site along the edge of the forest. The Office wing is 18’ deep, and the Gallery wing is 40’. Facing the forest, the Office wing features floor to ceiling curtain wall, allowing the Bard faculty to maintain a relationship with nature throughout the work day, with dappled light filtered through the forest in the evening. The bullpen style portion of the office features courtyard facing 8’ tall operable windows to provide natural air and ventilation.

In the Gallery wing, a cracked glass facade system was developed in relation to the branching language of the forest.

Eastern morning light plays with the shadows of the irregular steel members and the branches of the trees, in the shadows that fill the gallery space. The sloping roof which began at 12’ in the south at the staff entrance, has risen to a maximum of 32’ in the gallery, and descends back down to 17’ in the northeast gallery corner.

This building incorporates strategies such as Building Integrated WWv roof panels, as well as heated slab floors via Geothermal wells to bring its energy usage close to net zero.

Artists’ Retreat GSAPP Advanced IV Studio, Spring 2020 Critic - Lindy Roy The Artists’ Retreat is a three month retreat in the Tomkins Cove Quarry, an industrial natural artifact. Across 10 sites in the quarry, minimal, elemental structures are provided for the artists’ use. It is left to the artists to decide where they live, how they use the architecture, and when, and to what degree, they collaborate.

Each building on each site is a 12’ x 12’ x 20’ box, with 1 to 2 open sides (glazing) and 4 to 5 closed sides (limestone concrete). The orientation of the boxes to each other, combined with which sides are open or closed, creates a unique dynamic at each site.

The only other element that’s provided on the site is 20”x 20” and 16”x 16” wooden boxes, which can be used for storage and as furniture.

The ID_ID Houses GSAPP Core III Housing Studio, Fall 2019 Critic - Galia Solomonoff, AIA RA Partner - Marcell Aurel Sándor The ID_ID Houses redefine urban communal living around the small scale neighborhood community. Every apartment features a direct access to a garden space shared with two or three other units, a private front door accessible from the street, as well as a private outdoor patio.

The site itself is porous; open to the sidewalk in several places and completely open through the center East-West axis, integrating the existing Bronx neighborhood and the ID_ID Houses.

From the street, the massing is legibly residential, with the units articulated at a domestic scale. However, any individual unit within the conglomerate cannot be identified from the outside, giving autonomy to each resident; a private means to know how to navigate from the sidewalk, through the site, and to their front door.

The residents of the ID_ID Houses decide their level of engagement with their neighborhood when and how they desire it, fostering a dignifying community where individuals are the stakeholders defining the nature and character of the collective.

Muhheakunnuk Klima GSAPP Advanced V Studio, Fall 2020 Critic - Laurie Hawkinson and Alex Mann This is a siteless, net-zero energy proposal for Columbia University’s new Climate School. The school is housed in a decommissioned crude oil tanker the moves up and down the Hudson River between its two stations: the LamontDoherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, and Columbia’s Manhattanville Campus. The vessel is given the new name of Muhheakunnuk Klima, derived from the river’s Native name, Muhheakunnuk, meaning ‘The River that Flows Both Ways’.

The entire footprint of the new Climate School exists solely on the Muhheakunnuk Klima. No new construction will be required on land at any of the University’s properties, diminishing the school’s further impact in neighborhoods adjacent to Morningside Heights and Manhattanville. The transient presence of the school on the river reduces its physical impact while enriching its cultural impact.

Muhheakunnuk Klima is imagined as a proposition for realigning the balance of power. It provides a solution to the disproportionate distribution of land and energy, and the resulting imbalance in availability and diversity of cultural resources. Columbia’s new Climate School will exist as a symbol of environmental justice, and an actor in the research and community engagement that is vital to achieve it.

Skybridge Respite GSAPP Core I, Fall 2018 Critic - Benjamin Cadena The Skybridge Respite is a network of public space integrated into the shopping district at Herald Square.

Although the act of shopping has historically been considered a leisure activity, being a consumer in the 34th street retail district can be far from a relaxing experience. The neighborhood exemplifies New York City public space and the stores surrounding Herald Square are the foundation of Manhattan’s retail experience.

Shopping in New York City can often be a draining experience, so this network of public space provides a respite from retail in a series of sky bridges that span the avenue and Herald Square.The five bridges vary in size and form, and act as a space for shoppers to pass through, wait for their friends and family, or relax and enjoy their city.

Library GSAPP Core II, Spring 2019 Critic - Emmett Zeifman This Library and community center serves the Bowery and surrounding neighborhoods. Located tangentially to Sara D. Roosevelt Park, this Library has amenities for local children, teens, adults, and elderly residents.

On the ground level, the community center provides an after school education center, a laundromat, and a community space. Upstairs, the library has different zones for different programs, places of learning, and reading areas.

The form is a realization of a found object - cupcake tins lifting off the ground to create circulation, their shells providing structural walls, ceilings, and roof. Light enters where people do, from the lifting of the shell. On the upper levels, this is where the glazing is introduced. No breaks in the shell are made, rather the deformities of each determine the quality of the space, where light filters in, and where people can enter.

In the third semester of the tech sequence at GSAPP, students complete the design for a versatile theatre space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Our theatre prioritized the access to and view from the adjacent Transmitter Park, expanding the public experience into the lobby of the theatre, and curating the transition from public to intimate, once inside the house of the auditorium.

We explored specific building techniques, detailing important aspects of our design. For these drawings, we worked as a team to model our design in Revit, while each member further detailed different components of the building.

We resolved the construction details in and around the house of the theatre to allow for a column free auditorium and black box, a large, open lobby, and a green roof on the second floor. Included, are chosen pages from the construction document set that was submitted for the final review.

Courtyard Table GSAPP Commencement Cermony, Spring 2019 For GSAPP Events As an employee of the GSAPP Making Studio and GSAPP Events and Exhibitions, I was invited to design and fabricate a catering table for the 2019 GSAPP Commencement Ceremony and End of Year Show.

The table was designed to specifically fit around an urn in the courtyard behind Avery Hall on Columbia’s campus. The eight sides of the table are offset from the eight sides of the urn. There are two tiers for catering and decoration, one at 30 inches above the ground, and another resting on top of the urn.

The project required CNC milling, to cut the correct shapes for the table, and on-site assembly, the morning before Commencement. The table is disassemble-able and has been stored at GSAPP for future use.

Solo House

GSAPP ADR I, Fall 2018 Critic - Josh Uhl The sensations of isolation, privacy, and respite are analyzed through this immersive model. The experience replicates the elements of the Solo House in rural Spain, designed by KGDVS, both architecturally, and scenically.

One quarter of this cirular house is modeled at 1/8th inch scale and held, by the user, in front of their eyes. Rotating scenary of the surroudning trees and mountain scape rotates around the user’s head while they imagine themselves in the Solo House.

This wearable model seeks to mimic feelings of privacy, or lack thereof, while spending a weekend in the house. The immersive nature allows the user to enjoy this experience completely on their own.
