THE FLIPPED SCHOOL The reimagined PS64 as the Flipped School proposes a radically alternative form of education. One that embraces what the city has to teach us by extending the urban fabric into the interior of the school. The Flipped School is a place for active and social modes of learning in hopes of producing “street-smart” kids. Advocates for the flipped classroom pedagogy have shown that human brain activity during lecture is akin to watching television. In the flipped classroom, lectures and other activities done in school are watched on recorded videos at home. The concepts covered are then applied in group projects and instructor led discussions in the classroom. This student-centric approach is meant to enhance engagement and communication skills. The Flipped School will embrace this “flipped” pedagogy through spaces that blur the lines between classroom and recess, city and school.
