THE OPEN TOWERS Formal / Informal:Migrant Climates in the Immigrant City

Our project is rooted in defining informality; what informal urbanism looks like, what kind of activity it entails, and how an architectural system can facilitate informality for immigrants.

The foundations of the project came from exploring the paradigm between formal typology and informal anti-typology; we observed that formal typologies describe what is built, what is permitted, and has definite program.

Fall 2021

Immigrants often hack objects to suit their needs in public spaces. Their mobility optimizes the use of space and the flow of people. Street food is a transformation from fast-food restaurants. Lower income vendors use movable furniture to reduce their costs; keeping the function of cooking limited to food carts. These anti-typologies are derived from the manipulation and hybridization of formal typologies and are designed for the underlying principle of efficiency addressing the needs of the occupants.

Further research led us to try and produce anti-typological space through formal architectural elements; combining them to try and facilitate non-binary, hybridized elements that could facilitate informality. We then applied the architectural vernacular of different immigrant cultures to these new hybrid elements, in an attempt to instill immigrant color into our design. Though the form is often associated with informal space, it does not itself produce informality. Designing for immigrants and predicting the way they occupy space as architects can be difficult; inherently informality is not designed by architects. In fact, attempts to formalize informality for immigrants can be problematic, stereotyping, and can produce an inaccurate depiction of them.

CEMENTING INTANGIBLES Ectractive Taskscapes

The world is witnessing dramatically intense and frequent natural disasters: making nations surrender portions of their territories because of climate change and its associated natural disasters and sea-level rise due to an increase in greenhouse gases. One major source of greenhouse gases is the extraction and use of fossil fuels like natural gas and oil. The United States is the largest producer of Natural Gas in the world. I analyze existing taskscapes that are tied to the extraction of natural gases to envision a different carbon negative future. The aim was to construct a scenario of transition for these spaces of high carbon release into carbon sinks. A strategy is implemented to capture, visualize, and reuse the released carbon to not only create a reflection of natural gases taskscape by making tangible the intangible but also create a domino effect to reduce the carbon impact of the construction industry. An assemblage of instruments is used to create a new taskscape, one which impacts two extractive taskscapes.

I define the transformation and the path. In the following way, in the order stated above, I describe the method of transformation as (1) developing “virtual systems”, (2) integrating the new taskcapes and modeling their energy and storage capacities, (3) constructing a task for them based on the data and algorithms and (4) using the method of transformation to explore and optimize the system as a whole. The entire model is implemented in a model system, which is based on the input and output data, and the system is based.

Saori Weaving Two different thread thickness leads to the distortion of the basic grid bring about transparency. The meandering path is explored through the interpolation of threads to form the weave.
