01 THE NEW CLIMATE SCHOOL A GROWING VORTEX OF CLIMATE KNOWLEDGE AND CARE

Solving the climate crisis requires a great effort from global community, and universities always take a central role in this global cooperation. Today, Columbia is establishing its climate school which will be built in Columbia's new Manhattancille Campus. However, the concept of the master plan -- PERMEABIITY failed to achieve its initial goal. The campus is surrounding by four giant infrastructures. Therefore, this chosen site on the edge of the Hudson river will act as a open endes that connect Columbia to the outside world.

The geometrical model of the project plan chose the circle for its non-hierachical which is often used by Round table conferences because everyone can share the same status and has a 360-degree panoramic view to hance cooperation. Then, vertically, due to the complicated site condition, architecture will act as a connection device that lead public and academic circulation align and intervene with each other at different height layer.

02 TYPOLOGICAL CORRECTION ON WAGNER AFFORDABLE HOUSES

Harlem's NYCHA subsidized housing projects are hybridized through tower bridging and refurbishment that teach civic action and skills, while providing shops and spaces for community wealth building. The new Wagner Houses integrate the industrial and domestic realms with experimental live-worklearn co-ops to solve for isolation, unemployment and unaffordable housing, while allowing residents to earn a wage by building their collective homes.

First, a low-rise bridging systems address the tower's isolation and lack of services. Modernist orthogonality is broken by its angular form. Then, Singular separated units are transformed into collective shared living quarters, allowing for larger, more luxurious shared programming by offering four floor sequence, and containing a network of duplex layouts.

Bedrooms and living rooms face outside to views, while offices face inside to enhance the collective working atmosphere, to create a co-working atmosphere. Also, the towers are extended both vertically and horizontally to prevent displacement through hybrid functions that change in different floors.

The spatial qualities of the neighborhoods are improved by the interior changes. The new repetition is mitigated by the complexity of the design, establishing a grand urban village that exchanges a typology of isolation for a lively experience.

NYCHA’S AFFORDABLE HOUSING ISLANDS

East Harlem - a vibrant place of music halls and genuine people. Its residents make a living in the construction or service industries, like John Moore owner of 125th Pizza, or the two anonymous residents we spoke to. Shop-lined streets support apartments above. In El Barrio, as locals call it, elderly men chat, groups of kids roam, couples push strollers - a great diversity of family types is evident.

But the neighborhood lacks the programmatic diversity of Harlem’s identity. Existing programs are isolated and scattered.

A hybrid approach is needed to help El Barrio, and other NYCHA houses, to regain its identity.

On a broader scale, Harlem struggles with incomes and unemployment. One out of 10 adults are unemployed, and residents spend over a third of their income on rent. 2 out of 5 adult have college degrees, while 1 out 5 lack a high school diploma. Young professionals have limited access to professional development beyond retail.

UNEMPLOYMENT & LACK OF EDUCATION FACILITIES

Many of these locals live in NYCHA’s subsidized housing. Our site, Wagner Houses, shows how disinvestment in public housing has lead to crumbling infrastructure unreliable service.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS The project phases begins with the construction of the bridging.

Its didactic, lightweight dual truss system is supported by exposed I beams and anchors into the tower’s rigid concrete structure. Metal decking provides sturdy floors for program and stormwater green roofs. The balcony expansions and walls consist of steel frames with finishes, and are bolted into the existing concrete slabs. This also eliminates the former rotten wooden frames. Existing brick is reused where the existing walls remain, a solemn memory of the old Wagner.

Ho’oponopono is a Healing ceremony that was practiced in Hawaii to set things right with each other and God and to restore and maintain good relationships among family through prayer, discussion, confession, repentance, and mutual restitution and forgiveness followed by closing prayers and periods of silence.

Hooponopono is about conflict resolution. We look at healing as an opportunity to give back to a community that has long suffered from US colonialism.

On Puowaina, we approach the concept of healing in a twofold manner: Healing of the land: At the peak we removed the existing platform and re-created the land that used to be there, thus restoring the original landscape.

We looked back at navigation practices when thinking about healing the natives from colonization, as navigation enabled them to restore their faith in the importance and value of their ancestral knowledge.

This demonstration of indigenous knowledge and technology led to a revitalization of voyaging. The star compass, used by navigators was based on these seven houses and through refocusing attention on these elements we aim to restore indigenous knowledge.

PUOWAINA & PUNCHBOWL Lady Columbia Intervention

When molten lava broke through the existing layer of rock and sediment and cooled upon contact with the water table and the atmosphere, Puowaina crater died the moment it was born. It rises 461 feet above sea level and offers views of most of Oahu island. At the same time, an isolated space above the city makes Puowaina a sacred burial site to its indigenous people.

Pili Grass Field Lā Silent Room

Aligning with summer Solstice, the Hawaii burial axis started from Honolulu Harbor, passing by the ancient heiau site where located the Iolani Palace, the Sacred Mound, and the Hawaii State Capitol, finally reaching the altar at the peak of Puowaina. Here, Hawaiians used the sacred peak for offering humans as sacrifices for the punishment of violators of taboos to appease pagan gods.

The burial crater story is deeply rooted in Puowaina’s history for merely 800 years until it is abruptly ended by so-called western civilization. But It is later evoked since the US military chooses Puowaina crater for its unique cultural and historical background.

When we looking into all the actors in the crater, the actor relationship network speaks to its colonization stories. The most sacred peak had been cutting into a viewing deck. The crater‘s inside landscape has been neatened into planes so that the cemetery can bury as many as people. Upon them, non-native plants are artificially organized into axis trees and delicate grassland that emphasize the authority that lady Columbia represents.

Our first step of the Ho'oponopono is about land healing, we want to give the Puowaina crater back to the Hawaiian people, to restore its history and culture.

We want to restore the Landscape of the peaks as well as its Sacredness. so the people can see the peak from the distance but cannot walk upon it. We also use the sprawling pili grass to blur the original artificial boundary of the graveyard 44

This project involves a two-stage optimization process for a compression shell structure that is situated within the exhibition venue of Venice Biennale. The goal of this project is to design a compression shell structure that is generated based on both perceived obstacles (boundaries, columns, and exhibits) and projected constraints (circulation), to articulate a bespoken spatial experience aligned with site conditions.

In conclusion, the optimized results demonstrated the possibility of articulating a controlled shell structure that is adaptive to given conditions without compromising structural efficiency. However, in retrospect, implementing Kangaroo Physics as part of the design space model and as a crucial agent in final structural optimization restricted the variety of parameters, which is evident in the subtlety among iterations generated

by Discover. The underlying problem can be understood as the inevitable authorship imposed by simulation software outweighs the rest of the factors defined in design space, in which a physics-based simulation by nature is an optimization process, resulting in a predetermined boundary.

The second issue relates to the bias under the framework. As mentioned briefly in previous sections, the project sets on speculation of human behavior and subjective values. For instance, openings are located in cold zones as it follows the assumption that crowds would be drawn to a brighter area. It is necessary to include a range of measurable, tangible data to justify the result.

This part plays the role of hinging circulation simulation with structure generation. In this part, random variables of zone points and their radius were analyzed based on the relationship with the simulated site conditions. The results would be different types of voids and would be applied to the structure generation as input parameters.

The distance between each zone point and closest column’s center point was the foundation for conditionals.

Two larger circles will be generated from each center point of the zone and its closest column, and its radius will be a factor multiplied by the zone and the column’s radius. Then, The two halves of the two circles that farthest apart from each other will each select 3 points as the control point of the new closed NURBS curve.

Stage B. Canopy Openings

The high performance results were selected after running 10 generations with 50 designs per generation in Discover , and it can be found that the general trend among them is that the canopy geometry ascends from left to right. At first glance it seems irrelevant to any of the performance metrics, but the ascendency is in proportion to the circulation density: The simulated circulation was not distributed unequally, with 4 routes on the right, and 1 on the left. The best performing iteration further addressed the nuances by having the highest point on the top right corner, where two parallel routes set 10ft apart from one another.

06 AVERY SPOT A Student-designed Temporary Outdoor Pavilion on Columbia’s Campus

The seminar is a collaborative initiative to design, build, and program a temporary pavilion structure that was erected in April 2021 by the students in the plaza between Avery , Fayerweather , and Schermerhorn Halls on Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus. The pavilion is being used for GSAPP events and celebrates the reunion of students and faculty on campus during the April 29 and May 1, 2021 Columbia GSAPP commencement activities.

The seminar began with research of precedents for temporary pavilions and progressed into the design, feasibility studies, structural and mechanical consulting and review, project management, budget management, and final construction of the pavilion. There were two principal components to completing Avery SPOT: the inflatable canopy and accompanying hybrid online and in-person programming.
