Fur ther, I ob taine d a Mas t er ’s D e gre e in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia Universit y (GSAPP). practised in the San Francisco Bay Area and in NYC with a focus on high-end single-family housing, mixed-use high-rise projects, commercial and workplace environments, educational projects, planning and strategy w o r k , t e c h n o l o g y d e v e l o p m e n t , a n d i n n o v a t i o n p r o j e c t s . The Architecture of Resiliency In a city consumed by corruption and special foreign interest, there stand Bierutians clinging to their sense of common identity spanning beyond dif ferences. Beirut, a city that for far too long has su f fere d inade quate ac c e s s to basic re sourc e s such as water, energy, or fo o d for i t s inhab itants, is struggling to break free of the fading colonial strings that have for decades moved its internal and ex ternal politics and torn its urban fabric. Increased dependency on ex ternal agents as well as the reliance on inadequate environmentally harmful solutions has been steady for the past decades adding to a multilayered compounded set of problems.

In addition, a blast on the fateful morning of August 4th 2020 has rendered the city futile, drastically increasing the basic resource dependency and presenting an urgent need for a deployable and accessible solution that can mitigate the problems and librate the community by providing instanteous access to the much-needed resources.

This led to the creation of the Seed. The Seed is a deployable architecture that does not only acts as a host or a mediator of activities but it is also an architecture that provides its user with the resources needed to librate them. Designed to be a flexible space on which the community can find themself free from the bonds of a decaying and deficient centralized infrastructure. Through modular par ts the design of the Seed allows the users to configure the space as needed to accommodate dif ferent immediate programs or constraints. Deployed throughout Gemmayze wherever needed, the Seed provides resilience and independency to the most impacted neighborhood in Beirut. Designed to be easly assembled with readly sourced materials, the Seed empowers the community to generate their own needed resources through their built environment, enabling sustainable self-suf ficiency that allows for true independence.

The Seed consists of modular par ts that can be assembled with limited tools and exper tise on multiple sites through out the Gemmayze to ser ve as both a permanent and a temporar y space for variety of programs that suppor t the neighbourhood and it ’s needs. The Seed can sustainably generate solar and motion energy and can harvest water as well as provide produce for the consumption of the communit y. The Seed can be located in a public plaza, a vacant lot , a public stairlanding or a roof top. It can be deployed where it ’s needed and when it ’s needed. The Seed can be used as a medical facility for Covid testing and quarantine or as public ar t exhibition space. Due to the Seed’s unique unistrut system design, limitless amount or accesosries can be at tached to the main frame altering the use and program of the space put ting agency back in the hand of the us er.

The Seed can function as a system of aggregates scat tered throughout the neighborhood.

Seed modules can be connected to provided an expandable space and increased per formance capabilities. Each module can produce energy enough for 10 occupants to be self-suf ficient f or a ye ar. A single mo dule c an als o har ve s t 1 ye ar of wa ter c onsump tion f or 3 o c cup ant s . In addition, through the use of ver tical farming a Seed module can provide 9 users with their yealy supply of produce. As an aggregate, Seed modules can be distributed throughout the city creating decentralized high-per formance spaces that are linked as a network providing a granular data cloud enabling a high level of resiliency in the case of disaster prevention through a highly interactie feedback loop that grants an equitable and accurate resorce map.

Finally, the intent of this projec t is to provide liber t y, agency and self-suf f iciency to the community through the design of an intelligent and accessible system that can serve as a seed on which sustainable resiliency can grown by the hand of the people.

AUTOMIZATION AND THE IN BETWEEN..

Empathy and Machines.

In describing the presence of emotions such as empathy, sympathy or sentimentali t y in li terature the Nobe l Pri ze c ommi t t e e wro t e that Erne s t Hemingway ’s writing turned these emotion “inwards” – they are “not restrained, but vibrant below and beyond the level of fact and fable. The reader feels their presence, although they are not visible in the actual words. That is because o f Hemingway ’s awarene s s o f the re lat ion be t we en the truth of facts and events and his conviction that they p r o d u c e c o r r e s p o n d i n g e m o t i o n s .” H e m i n g w a y d e s c r i b e d his own path: “Find what gave you the emotion; what the action was that gave you the excitement . Then write it down making it clear so the reader will see it too a n d h a v e t h e s a m e f e e l i n g a s y o u h a d .” A r c h i t e c t u r a l ambitions in the realm of emotions and empathy are often presented as forms of anthropology or sociology;

as data or attempts to understand the user by heuristic information, as a subject by means of power relations and techniques. Architects are often understated exper ts at invoking emotion, but given the professional stature of the discipline, we are also likely to understate the g o a l a s p r o f e s s i o n a l o r a d m i n i s t r a t i v e . To s p e a k o f n e e d , o r m e e t i n g d e m a n d s , o r o f s o l v i n g a p r o b l e m . We r a r e l y d i s c u s s e m p a t hy o r e m o t i o n d i re c t l y. In t h e H e m i n g way example, the conveyance of emotion is perhaps not a conveyance at all. Instead the detail of the “ac tion” t ha t gav e t h e wr i t e r “e x c i t e m e n t ” – “ i f wr i t t e n d o wn ” – would in effect , regenerate the emotion anew – in the reader. Archi tec ture resonates here – we are indeed a profession of details , we write (or draw) ever y thing in an at temp t to c onve y, generate , ins tigate emo tion – the eventual qualit y of experience happens in our absence (when the work is complete). It is, only the detail that is left to generate the emotion.

Go Wild Summer 2021 Studio

GO WILD With exuberance, this studio conflates multiple threads of research to p r o p o s e w i l d e c o s y s t e m s f o r a N e w Yo r k C i t y b l o c k . W h i l e a n u r b a n b l o c k c ould be c onsidere d an e c o sy s t em i t ’s s tric t order, rule sand organi z at ion prevent it from being self-sustaining and it is a far cr y from being wild.
